About the Author
About the Authors Born and bred in Houston, David Baird now lives in Austin where he writes, edits, researches, and translates for a variety of projects. He has contributed to several works about Texas and Mexico, including Frommer's Mexico. Edie Jarolim was a senior editor at Frommer's in New York before she indulged her Southwest fantasies and moved to Tucson, where she now edits the travel and food sections of the Arizona Daily Star. She is also the author of Arizona For Dummies, and her articles have appeared in national publications ranging from Art & Antiques to the Wall Street Journal. Residents of northern New Mexico since 1970, Don & Barb Laine have traveled extensively throughout the West, spending as much time as possible in the outdoors, particularly the Gulf of Mexico and the Rocky Mountains. In addition to this book, they have authored or contributed to Frommer's Colorado, Frommer's Utah, and Frommer's National Parks of the American West. Eric Peterson is a Denver-based freelance writer who has contributed to numerous travel publications, including Frommer's National Parks of the American West and Frommer's Colorado. He also writes for several Colorado-based business and entertainment periodicals. Neil E. Schlecht was reared in North Dallas. Texas revisited - Is the new edition any better?

I reviewed the previous edition of this book and thought I should see how the new one (the 2009 edition) stacks up. To provide some background, I live in Houston and I like to use travel guides like this to find new places to visit, restaurants to dine in, etc. - I've made a lot of nice finds so far. What follows is my detailed take (hopefully not too much so) on what it gets right and wrong...

Most of what I said before still applies... the previous edition was spot-on in its coverage of the big Texas cities but a bit lacking in details for the less-traveled, more scenic destinations.

Lo and behold, they actually have expanded those sections a bit (especially West Texas) and re-organized them to boot. I still say the Hill Country deserves its own chapter (and made mention of the spring bluebonnet blooms and certain personal faves like Natural Bridge Caverns and Lost Maples State Park), but the guide hits all of the high points. I also still wish they mentioned some of the more spectacular day hikes in Big Bend - The Window and Lost Mine Trails - and had more details on Big Bend State Park (at least it's mentioned this time), but those are minor issues - and coming from a total outdoors freak such as myself.

The other few minor quibbles I have is on some restaurant choices (no Taco Taco Cafe in San Antonio? Loma Linda is _still_ in there, for Houston?). The choices are certainly not bad and all the essentials seem to be there, but especially for Houston it would've been nice to see some of the more exciting new eateries that have sprung up the last several years (Feast, a British-style "tail-to-snout" eatery that I'd venture to say is unique in the entirety of Middle America; award-winners such as Reef, Cova, and Catalan; Danton's for Gulf Coast eatin' and its jazz brunch; Max's Wine Dive, Textile, Bedford, T'afia, Tony's... and this is just for Houston!). Here I actually give a tip of the hat to Fodor's. I could go on and on, but this review is already too long; I am sort of a food fanatic though, so take all that with a grain of salt if you're not. The hotel listings, on the other hand, seem adequately up-to-date.

In the end, though, I realized it's amazing how much is in this guide while at the same covering the vast, diverse hugeness that is Texas. It's hard for me to think of a guide describing the state much better without becoming absurdly huge, and there are really no glaring omissions that I can think of. Plus, they do a good job of giving you a feel for each destination. For the majority of travelers (even picky ones such as myself), this guide will be more than adequate - 5 stars.

A decent travel guifde for Texas

This is one of the few guidebooks one can find on Texas that is from a reputable company(the other is the lonely planet guide). I found this book wholly inferior in giving accommodation and restaurant choices in West Texas, particularly from Midland to El Paso and the Big Bend Area. Although some choices were provided it seemed that the book passed over many fine dining establishments. Nevertheless the book does have a wealth of information on Texas but it seems it needs some updating. Many of the phone numbers need new area codes. A marginal travel guide but one of the few choices.

Lone Star State

I found this guide to be quite thorough when it came to the major cities, granted it is not exactly a Rick Steves guide to Texas, but it did hit upon the most popular attractions and it got Dallas and Houston about right and I am very familiar with both cities, I really know very little about West Texas so I'll defer to the other reviewer on the guides shortcomings on accomedations and such out there, but if you are going to Austin, San Antonio, Houston, or Dallas-Ft. Worth, I think you will find this guide helpful, and easy to read.

Written well, but outdated and unnecessary

This book pretty thoroughly covers how to use the Amazon.com website, step by step. It includes information on how to look for products, purchase products, manage your account, and how to sell things on Amazon...as of 2004. The site has changed significantly since then. Quite a few things have been added to the site (like digital downloads), while others have been removed (like auctions). While the basic concepts usually are the same, the way the site looks is different, and the screen shots in the book typically are out of date.

Furthermore, this book really doesn't go into any more detail than Amazon's own free help text can provide online. It's just presented in the form of a book. It doesn't contain any secrets about how to launch a successful business selling products on Amazon, it merely explains the mechanics of listing items for sale (again, as of 2004).

Long story short: if you are capable of purchasing this book from Amazon, you probably don't need to read it.

Ready Reference

Why write a book about Amazon when all the info is on the website, you all ask? It's simple: to provide a hard-copy ready reference, and this book COVERS IT ALL. Everything dealing with both sides (buyer/seller) is here. Also is excellent for those new to the online-shopping experience. A crucial book, and a top-floor volume in the Dummies series.

An UPDATE (Feb. 2012)
Amazon has changed its face several times since this book came out & when I originally wrote this review. As For Dummies books often get updates, this one would be a prime candidate, but I haven't seen any new editions yet.
Suffice to say this edition, though wearing Amazon's grey wig, still adequately touches upon most of the cogs & sprockets in Amazon's working machine, enough for still a general idea. I would like to know IF a new version DOES get released.

Very readable intro to Visual C++

Excellent, readable, and comprehensive intro to Visual C++ for folks with a smattering of programming knowledge. You don't have to have any C++ experience to use this book, but I do recommend that if you are an absolute beginner to the world of computer programming, you pick up an easier book, say, COBOL for Dummies. I bought this book as a refresher...I've done Visual Basic for years and want to go back to something closer to the machine level--I miss the granularity and sheer power of C++ and I'm tired of the slowness of the .Net line and their buggy frameworks. These Horton C++ books exhibit a friendly and relaxed writing style: I find most programming texts too terse and psychotic for my taste. I picked up a more advanced text from Wrox, Professional C++, to get back to the intermediate level later on and I will get the Stroustrup and Myers texts to help me cross the threshhold of advanced C++ development once again.

If you are truly new to C++, don't get discouraged with the many battles you'll encounter ahead...the payoff down the line is very great if you can master this Maserati of programming languages. Don't believe all the negative talk you hear about C++...most of this comes from folks who lack true mastery of the C++ language and how to use it effectively (C++ goes where C#, Java, and VB will never ever go). The Horton books will take much of the pain away--work quickly through this book and maybe try out the Dietel books simultaneously to get a jump start on your fellow C++ students! Good luck!

Great Book but Boring

This is a great book. However, the chapters are long and can be boring.

Also, if you hate math then you might be a little annoyed at all the simple exercises using basic math. Maybe, if Ivor Horton referenced food instead .. hmmmm.

One other downer about this book ... as you get more advanced you will find yourself working on only one example. The author should have used new examples in each chapter to help the learning experience.

I've found that if you work with one example and someone misses something along the way ... they will have difficulty as they progress.

Other than that ... this is a great book and very well written. You will definitely learn a lot reading this tutorial.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone!

Great Listings But Poor Campground-Finding Tools

This book lists some great campgrounds. I would have given it a five-star rating, but unfortunately the book's locational tools are so poor that it's hard to find the campgrounds you want. Here are some examples:
We stayed at a recommended campground, Clear Lake State Park in California. The book's review was 100% on target, and it was a great place to camp.
But don't bother looking it up in the book's index because it's not there. Other state parks are in the index, so don't ask me why this one isn't.
Of course you can always use the book's map to locate all the campgrounds in a given area, right? Maybe not.
The book's map shows two black dots indicating campgrounds in the Clear Lake area at Kelseyville and Nice, towns near the campgrounds. I try to look up Kelseyville, but it's not listed. Eventually I find what I'm looking for under the nearby town of Lakeport (even though the address given in the listing is Kelseyville).
But that's just for starters. I was perusing the book after returning from our trip, and I noticed there was a campground listed under Middletown, a town we drove through on our way home. I missed this campground in my pre-trip research because the campground, Beaver Creek RV Park & Campground (p. 137), is omitted from the book's map. I know I'm not mistaken, because I looked it up and found it just south of Clear Lake using Tom Stienstra's book California Camping.
If I could find so many screw-ups in such a short period of time, I'm sure the book is loaded with them. On the other hand, the recommended site was excellent, and the information provided about it was accurate. I'm going to buy this book anyway, knowing that its poor campground-finding tools will make a lot more work for me and increase the risk of missing a campground within a given area.
Used in conjunction with Stienstra's California Camping, this book should help the reader pick the best campgrounds. For those looking for campgrounds located in the other covered states (Arizona, Nevada, Utah), this is still a worthy book worth your consideration. Or wait until the second edition comes out -- perhaps by then they'll have made the necessary improvements.

If you're an RV'er, this guide comes in handy.

The first thing you'll notice is that there are more dump stations and propane filling stations than you were aware of. That alone makes this guide worthwhile. For example, while passing through the San Jose area, this guide indicated two very close propane stations to where I was. If nothing else, it saves gasoline driving around hunting for campgrounds, propane and dump stations. It even showed a State free dump station at a rest stop. Not many of those around.

Nearly all the recipes you could think of

I recieved this book as a present as one of my first two cookbooks. From first glance I was impressed with the way it was bound. By having a ring binding, I have been able to take recipes out to cook with or to copy and then put them back with ease. The second thing I liked about the book was that it had pictures to go with probably about half to a third of the recipes, which is great, seeing as I am one of those people that likes to know what the finished product should look like. The book is full of tips on almost everything, such as place settings, how you are supposed to cook meat in general, tell the temperature of your grill, and more. Starting out I was able to cook things I had never made before and never heard of and could do it on my own with no more help than the cookbook. I really liked that it gave examples with pictures explaining what might have went wrong and how you could fix it next time or how to salvage something. I always wondered why my muffins were usually so flat, now I know. Another thing I love about this book is that it has tables in the front and the back that help you convert fruits and vegetables into measurements, like a lime into lime juice or a banana into cups. Whether you're starting out or not, this cookbook is great and it probably has nearly all the recipes you could think of in it and a lot more. Best of all, the recipes work and the food that you can make tastes really good.

Wow! I sooooo didn't know what I was getting myself into!!!

I retired from the Canadian Civil Service about three years ago now and, some time later, decided maybe I should figure out how to cook good food for myself. I knew from my mother (now deceased) that Betty Crocker and Better Homes and Gardens were the corner stones of cook books in Canada! So I bought them. I haven't used many of the recipes yet (redecorating my apartment and, sadly, several deaths in the family among my mother's generation, have kept me focused on other responsibilities in life).

What I do know is that both of these foundation cookbooks have very valuable information on cooking tools and cooking skills; and the glossaries are indispensable!

Hopefully, the future is yet ahead of me!!

Hope you enjoy your cooking and cookbooks as much as I intend to (yah, I am still kitchen challenged!)

Invaluable resource and reference

This title is well worth searching out if you're thinking of purchasing new coverage or if it's been a long time since you've reviewed your current coverage. There's a lot more to insurance than most realize, and this book can help make things a lot clearer, save you money, and prevent nasty surprises down the road. Note that the edition available in Canada, of which I own a copy, appears to be identical to the American one in all respects.

This is a must have for young families, professionals, and really everyone who has their own residence. Through this book I found out my "sueability" and really restructured my entire insurance plan. Most people won't believe how grossly underinsured they are!

Great for Anyone under 20

I'm giving this book 4* not because of my experience with it, but because of the potential I see that it holds to be a concise, quick read for those who are just starting out. If a young person is looking at a broad swath of careers, this would be a great book that they could pick up and spend an hour or two reading and clarify if and how they could get into business.

For anyone past 2nd year of college though, this would not be useful

Effective teaching tool

As soon as my college prep and Advanced Placement English students start complaining about "ALL" the reading we have in my class, I break out this little gem and read a couple examples from among the 103 representative college and university lists contained within its pages. The book also offers the high school student a reading program with the goal of reading 100 books from among the lists by the time they enter college. It is a sensible plan with a simple form to chart one's progress. This book has a place in every college prep classroom and on every college hopeful's bookshelf.

For ALL Book-Lovers, Not Just Aspiring College Students

Many different universities and colleges provided the author with the names of works they recommend or use in first-year English classes. I remember seeing the first edition of this book when I was in high school and falling madly in love with it. Unfortunately, it was at the public library and someone lost it a month after I checked it out. I am an obsessive list-maker and this adds fuel to the fire of my two passions, lists and literature. Not all the books listed in here are predictable, canonical works, either. I'm surprised how many are out-of-print, making the search for great reading material even more fun. One gripe: no comprehensive index. I may just make my own.

A great source for finding something worthwhile to read

This book was written by my high school english teachers. It was published and I purchased it years after I graduated from college. I'm using the book as a means to measure how "well read" I am. Whenever, I'm at a loss of what more to read, I pick up this gem and find numerous suggestions. Thank you Doug, Michelle, and Patty.
