Have a Cat? Want a Cat? Get This Book.

I had the huge pleasure of living with two wonderful cats. With them, I mainly figured things out by trial and error. One of them lived to be 17, so things went pretty well all told.
After he passed away and I spent time mourning him, I decided it was time to adopt two new cats. This time, I did the wise thing and tried to educate myself better about cats and cat care before adopting. In fact, since my last two cats came to me as strays, I'd never actually formally adopted a cat from a shelter, breeder, or the like and was looking for guidance on the process itself.
Having found other "for Dummies" books to be very useful, this was the first book I turned to, and so far it's been extremely helpful, both as a guide and as a convenient reference. One of my cats is three months old (my first kitten), and one is a year old, so they both have different needs, and this book covers those needs in a fun, intelligent way. The tone is light, but the information is serious and detailed, with tons of useful advice on adopting, training, feeding, grooming, playing with, and otherwise caring for you cat. Many cat books are written by self-proclaimed experts, so it's nice to see that this one was co-written by a licensed veterinarian with very impressive credentials. My only complaint about the book so far is really a minor one: it would have been nice to have more full-color photos.
As with any topic, this shouldn't be your only reference book, but it should certainly be one of your first cat references.

Very useful reference, lacks a bit in the lessons...

Being VERY new to the guitar, I found this book to be a very useful reference. However, I think if you are starting from scratch it may be more useful to start with Guitar for Dummies. The author assumes you have at least a bit of knowledge about the very basics of music theory that are more completely covered there. Also, this is NOT a method book. While it covers a lot of useful ground, it's not exactly chock full of extended lessons. Instead, the author tends to touch on a subject and provide a short example before moving on. On the plus side, there are lots of tips and tricks that I haven't seen in method books and they can be very helpful if you are learning without a teacher. Likewise, it's full of useful information about the mechanics of your guitar, amps, effects, maintenance, etc. The CD is also a great bonus as it's really nice (and sometimes surprising) to hear what it is you're supposed to be playing. I think it would go hand in hand with a good method book (perhaps Chris Lopez's First Stage book?).

Good book, but not for beginners

If you want to learn Rock guitar, without going to an instructor, here is what I think is the best way:

1) Buy MelBay's 'Modern Guitar Method', Grade 1. Work on it for 6 months. Everyday. It gonna get boring and frustrating sometimes, but stick with it.

2) Buy this book. The book is very fast paced, and without a foundation, you'll throw it in the trash. Use the musical notation in the book, not the tab notation.

The book covers everything you'll want to know about rock guitar; different styles, chords, lead and rhythm guitar, etc. Very comprehensive, but extremely fast paced.

The original Fitness for Dummies, published in 1996, was a real breakthrough: a book that took a reader through all the fitness basics without being offputtingly complicated or insultingly simplistic. This second edition only improves on that tough balancing act.

The authors are two of the most experienced fitness writers in the business--Suzanne Schlosberg is a longtime contributor to Shape and Liz Neporent is a veteran personal trainer, corporate fitness consultant, and contributor to Shape and The New York Times. In addition to being experienced at explaining exercise, they're both exercise junkies, and their firsthand knowledge and love of the topic is evident throughout.

Yes, it is for dummies

This book purports to be little more than a refresher course or an updating of information for those of us that have not been to gyms in a very long time. It lives up to this premise very well, with language that is neither pedantic nor peppy (we've all heard "come on, you can do it!" a few too many times).
The strongsuit of Ms. Schlosberg's and Ms. Neporent's treatise is that it answers most of the questions beginners would either not know to ask or are embarrassed to ask... it takes a while in a gym space to be able to just turn to someone to ask how the treadmill starts up. These women endeavored to clear up these novice-level mysteries while succeeding in not coming off as condescending.
If, however, you would like a more definitive explanation of things (this book glosses over a large amount-- acting more as a relatively thorough overview than a true guide) you might ought to check elsewhere before committing here.
I found Fitness for Dummies to be very helpful as I am nearing thirty and getting back into gyms that have contraptions I could not have begun to understand before reading this book.

Dummies 3 - Idiots 4 (First Half)

I need one intro book on exercising and was juggling the "Dummies" and the "Idiots". I liked the organization and the clean layout of the Dummies book, but ultimately decided to go with the Idiots.
The main deal breaker was Martial Arts. The Dummies have no coverage at all (except Tai Chi, which doesn't really count), while the Idiots have a whole chapter. There is also some coverage of other "artistic" aerobic activities like dance. This is very important for me as I personally see the traditional machine-based workouts as too soulless.
The Amazon editorial for Idiots points out the other discrepancy - lack of coverage about injuries. Amazon does not provide sample pages for Idiots, so I couldn't verify just how much it is covered. But it's definitely missing from the Dummies.

Best Investment I Ever Made

Having had to retake Algebra in high school, I considered myself worthy of this book's title. I bought the book and workbook and put in about 3-4 hours daily for 10 weeks. I also watched an episode of the original Star Trek daily, as Spock is my muse for math and science. I went through the book and workbook once and then through the workbook again and I was able to pass the placement at the city college I wanted to attend. I knew exactly when those two trains that left Kansas City at different times and at different speeds would be 870 miles apart. I was no longer intimidated by x. The boost that this gave to my confidence is priceless but sadly, Star Trek is not quite the same.

Overall pretty good with a few suggestions

After being away from college for many years i will soon be heading back to take some math classes. I thought I would get a head start before my classes started by reviewing Algebra with this workbook. I've found it a worthwhile reference and book to practice with. The key to really understanding Algebra is being able to practice with as many problems as you can until you get it right. It's alot like learning to play the piano, from my experience.

Anyway, with that in mind, here are some areas of improvement that I would like to see in this book:

(1)The graphs are so tiny. It's very hard to draw on them. Bigger graphs would sure be helpful.

(2)More problems to solve would be a big help. The book says that it comes with 100's of problems to solve which is true. The problem is though, that some concepts it will review and then give you only one or two problems to practice on. If you get those two wrong, you will feel like you really haven't learned the concept yet.

(3)More detail on the Working with Inequalities Chapter - (Chapter 16) I still don't feel like I have a grasp of that chapter after spending many hours trying to understand it.

(4)More details on Chapter 21- Getting to the Point With Graphing. The problems in this chapter give no clear explanation as to how the results came about like in the other chapters.

Other than that it's a good book and worth a purchase.

Great book for refreshing and learning algebra

This book is great for not only the beginner in algebra but also for those who need a brush up. I purchased these books to help me review algebra since I'm heading back to college. I like the workbook; after you do the work you can check the answers at the end of the chapter and she even explains how the answers were worked out.
Both books are worked together so you can read over a whole chapter before you work in the workbook or just work in the workbook then read through the book when needed.
Over all this is a great set of books for learning algebra.

This book's definitely a keeper for rose growers

I have almost 40 rose books in my collection and I've read them all cover to cover, some many times. I didn't expect what I got from this book - new information that that wasn't included in weighty books for serious rose growers. This book demystifies the culture of roses, gives good advice in an easily read style. Its a great read and a painless way to learn enough to go right into rose growing - whether its just a couple of roses or major rose beds!

Great. Clear, informative and useful.

Obviously written by an expert, this book lets you zero in on exactly the information you want, or read page-by-page for a constantly interesting flow of information. A great section of tables help you narrow down your selection to fit your region and and amount of effort you feel like putting in. Makes you feel that you, too, can grow your own beautiful rose bushes!

I would give it 10 Stars if I could!

I'll be the first to admit it that when it comes to gardening, I'm more of a greenhorn than a green thumb. In ROSES FOR DUMMIES, I have found a friend. This book is exceptional for several reasons. First it goes step-by-step through cultivating roses. And the lists are wonderful.
Lists for roses that can survive bitterly cold winters; hot and dry summers; hot and humid summers, lists of "can't miss" roses, as well of the roses to avoid (for various reasons.)
The step-by-step approach is typical of "...For Dummies" books and does not assume a knowledge of roses, flowers or gardenings.
While there may be books just as good for beginning rose gardeners, I don't see how it is possible for there to be a better book.

If You Really Don't Have a Clue in Economics, You Will Learn Something

Although some of the economists who reviewed this book may have put some doubts into the minds of curious readers aching for an enlightening and reader friendly book on economics, I must share my insights on this book. Yes, it may fall short of anything that is taught in an economics class, but this is after all a book with a "For Dummies" in its title! Anyone who has typed a "...For Dummies" book has had the thirst to learn and the matching humility to gain some basic understanding of a concept. This book surely helped me. It is a condensed and pragmatic approach to a seemingly complex subject, i.e. economics. I learned more from this book than from my other economics classes in college!

Great intro, but the graphs were baffling

This was a nice introduction to economics. Well written and immediately useful.

My only complaint was with the graphs, which were almost completely incomprehensible. This is mainly due to the 'Dummies' style of printing only in black and white. Other texts would usually use different colours to represent different lines. This may seem like nitpicking, but there is such heavy reliance on graphs in this text that if you can't understand the graph, then you are only getting half the explanation.

Easy, clear, not too detailed

Very well-written and clear introduction to economics for people who don't know anything in that subject. I would swap microeconomics and macroeconomics chapters; would also prefer significantly more real-world examples. Would be nice to have a couple chapters for people who know enough math and wish a bit deeper understanding.

I am very pleased with this cookbook. I've been a vegetarian for about 10 years but only recently starting cooking more and this cookbook is great. The front section talks about the choice to be vegetarian and goes over how to have a balanced diet without eating meat.

The recipes themselves are divided up logically into chapters such as "vegetable main dishes", "grains and legumes", and "soy-based meals" which I appreciate. It makes it easy to find what you are looking for. There are also sections on foods aimed at kids and recipes that you can make in under 30 minutes.

At the back there is a section with sample menus which is really helpful for people who have a hard time breaking away from the idea that a meal must have a meat/protein center and side dishes.

Everything I've made so far has come out well and even my meat-eating husband has enjoyed them. Nothing is too complicated for a new cook. Highly recommended.
