Awesome book for 2 person household & new cooks

This cookbook assumes you're cooking for 2 people, not a whole family, which is a rare and helpful treat. As with most Betty Crockers, it starts with the basics, and does not assume the cook knows esoteric cooking terms, basic cooking times, etc. Recipes are easy, clear, involve basic ingredients, and most have been real hits in my household. It's a marvelous choice for a beginning cook (male or female), especially someone who'll be cooking only for 1 or 2 people.
The downside is that Betty Crocker recipes can be on the bland side. Many dishes in here are really basic. I've pencilled in my personal adjustments, spicing things up here and there.

I got this book as an engagement gift a couple months ago, I've already tried several of the recipes. It has not only many great recipes, it also has really helpful tips. I've made the carrot cake and apple cake several times already and brought it to work. Everyone loves it.

I just bought this book a couple of weeks ago and have to say that it is the best cooking book I have ever seen so far. Me and my wife are cooking fanatics who like to spend time trying out new recipes all the time. Great recipes, easy to follow instructions and a lot of useful information. I strongly recommend it!

Several Common Apps Working and Described

There are a handfull of applications that every web designer sooner or later has to implement. Of course a skilled web programmer can do any of these applications. All it takes is time, thinking about the problem, writing, debugging, checking out, and making the customer (who may be the programmer him/her self) happy.

Today there are several scritping languages that can be used to tie the web site together with a database for storing the data. One set of software that you can use is PHP and MySQL. Both of these are highly advanced products (often combined with Linux and the Apache web server for a high performance web server with no software cost). You might use these to write the applications you need.

But when we are talking about common applications, these have been done over and over. In this book, six applications are included, working and ready for you to install. Once you get them operational, you can easily modify them to suit your particular needs. The code for the application is given, both printed in the book and included on the CD that comes with the book. The code is then carefully explained both conceptually as to what the app does, and line by line so you know what's going on and modify it as needed.

The application included are:

two login apps

shopping cart

content management system (allows users to publish documents on your system)

Online bulletin board.

The book is intended to be self standing, but if you know nothing about PHP or MySQL you might look for the same authors book PHP & MySQL for Dummies.

Applications don't work. Other reviews must've been premature.

The applications on the CD are not "working and ready for you to install." Not at all.

In fact, if you do exactly what the book says, your apps WILL NOT work. Why? Because the code is wrong. Not only are there errors in the database instructions, but the PHP and inc files have numerous errors.

Even after downloading the "corrected files" and following the new instructions for the database found on the author's website, some functionality is simply broken. The CMS kinda-sorta works, but not really because there is no file upload form as you see displayed in the book. Just not there. Obviously the result of some error in the file include, but you'd have to be a php expert to figure it out. Without being able to add or delete records from a database, well, a CMS is pretty useless, isn't it? Yes it is.

The most important applications on the CD (shopping cart and content management system) are rife with errors. This cripples them to such a degree that they are worthless as is. And corrected. And especially if you are a "dummy."

This is a very good book to get practical skills in PHP development with MySQL appliances.But before buying it, it is important to understand that this book is not for beginers, this book assumes that the reader have a least basic knowledge of both tools.

Very Good Source For Cruise Information

"The Unofficial Guide to Cruises 2003" is a well written book that is a quite complete guide to virtually all cruises that you might realistically be interested in. The detail on different ships and lines is excellent, though I personally think that the Berlitz book "Ocean Cruising & Cruise Ships 2003" is more detailed on the ships themselves, and is generally easier to use than "The Unofficial Guide to Cruises 2003," though both have strong and weak points.
The strength of this book is in the complete and clear explanations of every aspect of a cruise for someone new to cruising. Some people like the breakdown by separate quality and value scales, but I didn't find it particularly user friendly, and often was scratching my head trying to resolve the grades received with narrative about particular ships. Once again, I think Berlitz has a more straightforward numerical system where it is clear why each ship got the overall score that it got.
While I prefer the Berlitz book marginally, this is also an excellent book with it's own unique viewpoints and strengths. My strategy has become to use the two books in tandem, as together there is a complete picture that neither book completely captures on it's own. Overall a noble effort and in the end this book is recommended for anyone considering a cruise, especially first time cruisers.

No great secrets revealed in this "unofficial" guide

This book is very thorough and detail oriented for the novice cruiser, but no "insider information" is revealed for an experienced traveler. If you have never cruised, or don't want to take the time to read the brochures, search the internet and ask lots of questions, this books may be for you. If you want to know things that aren't readily available from other sources (see above), you won't find any "unofficial" information in this publication. Your best bet for that type of info are different cruise interest sites on the web or "Cruise Travel" magazine.

The book is okay for people who haven't booked a cruise before, but I found that much of the information they offer as an "unofficial guide" may be found at various discussion sites that are easily found through a web search.

Robert's for Dummies works!

This was actually for my wife, who is currently parliamentarian for a local non-profit organization, which she has some prior experience at. Nonetheless, as soon as the book arrived, she curled up and read it "cover to cover" and made a bunch of notes from it to share with others. Next thing I knew, she was putting her official Robert's Rules away in storage, so like many of the "Dummies" books, this seems to be the practical knowledge most of us actually need.

That's why it must rest, during which time the carryover cooking continues, the temperature equalizes, and the juices relax and flow through the meat."

DAY 4: "Our dessert was a Warm Dark Chocolate Pudding Cake, and it was served with a glass of Quady Elysium from Madera County, California. They named their black muscat dessert wine Elysium because, in their words, 'Drinking this, you can almost feel you have fallen into a rose garden and been transported to heaven.' And I must say I did. I transported myself to bed instead, thinking what an appropriate meal this had been after our first wine lecture, and about the wines I would serve with my own next dinner party."

DAY 5: "We sampled each team's handiwork, and as we were polishing off this large meal, our chef stood up to congratulate us and hand out our 'certificates of accomplishment.'"

Rampant ego, not enough tips in this lackluster cookbook

Cookbooks, it seems, has taken a huge chunk of the publishing marketplace. Nearly every day I hear of a new 'hot' chef, or cookbook or trend. Nowadays, it seems that there is great delight in taking ordinary folks, and throwing them into situations where high stress, competition and trying to cram everything possible in a short amount of time and then showing it all happening on either the written page or the television screen for the viewer's delectation.

Most of the time, it's pretty embarassing to watch or read about. Sadly, this exploration of what it's like to be a student at the Culinary Institute of America in upstate New York -- when a chef refers to the CIA, this is what he's talking about -- is more of the author's opinions and incessantly rubbing the nose of the reader in to how she would or not do it. After a while, it gets very annoying, and more than a little smug -- personally, I didn't care how she would do something different, I wanted to learn more about the techniques and tips to be able to turn out a good meal in my own kitchen. Along with about fifteen other students, Martha Rose Shulman -- evidently a cookbook author herself -- entered what is called the CIA's "Boot Camp" -- a five day course that hits the high points of what is usually a six month course at the Institute.

Shulman starts the book off with an introduction, and a mention that she's done this before at the CIA. Then there are five chapters that cover each day, with a different style of cooking covered in each one. Along with an illustrated reacipe and a two page spread showing how to do the technique and putting the dish together. Inserted here and there are little tips and suggestions on how to improve your own cooking, and some truly excellent science as well -- I never knew that the trick to making a great stock was to add the mirepoix and herbs at the end of the cooking process. Along with the main dish, there are also some basic menus that each team put together. Then the teams gathered that evening for dinner at one of the CIA's signature restaurants, and the author talks about her dinner and wines. Finally, the book's second half has a selection of recipes -- several of which look to be very tempting -- and a glossary of cooking terms.

To say that I had very mixed reactions to this book is an understatement. I'm not sorry that I read it, as I've always wanted to take the CIA's Boot Camp, but this particular author was so unpleasant to be around -- an example is when she talks on the phone to her young son, and she tells him that today she had made the perfect french fry, and the little boy says that he wishes that she could bring him one, and then in the next breath states that she will never make french fries at home -- sheesh. To me, that's cruelty, especially when you tell your kid something like that. Too, she makes constant references to vegetarianism, and how she prefers that, in the meantime, she's making chicken, beef and veal dishes. Over all of it is the author's own smug attitude, that she's taking the course again -- this is mentioned close to a dozen times -- and how wonderful her own very own, style of technique is.

To be blunt, it's sickening. She even makes Martha Stewart look humble.

The other big flaw is that there is a presumption that the reader already knows such terms as mirepoix, what reduction is, that they have access to a good fishmonger or butcher that can do fancy cuts and trims, and finally, that the glossary is an afterthought, along with nothing being said about one of the most important aspects of cooking -- mise en place, where everything from ingredients to tools, are measured, prepped and laid out before the cooking starts. Once I had learned that, my cooking improved dramatically, and I was amazed that nothing is given in the book to such basic terms and techniques.

While I do urge anyone with the time, money and desire to try the cooking courses at the CIA, I don't suggest this book as a way to get there. The best way to use this book is to skim through it, find the techniques and recipes that interest you, and copy them down. The text in and of itself, is only interesting when the author isn't blaring on about herself. The photography is stock, with nothing particularly interesting except for some great beauty shots of some of the completed dishes and the various restaurants within the CIA.

It's a lovely book to flip through, and it has some truly tempting recipes to try, but overall, it's a grim disappointment and certainly not worth the hefty price of nearly thirty dollars. I give it about three stars, but that's all.

Great Cookbook with Many Memories

I grew up learning to cook first with the Betty Crocker Boys and Girls cookbook and then graduated to this cookbook. Betty was #1 in our house. I got my own but somewhere it got lost. I was glad to get a replacement. It's in wonderful condition but I have to say it's sad that it doesn't have the wear and tear of decades of use, showing my favorites. Thank you for the ability of being able to get a replacement since it's a remembrance of my Mom who taught me to cook using Betty. She passed in 2013.

This is a simple basic Betty Crocker cook book . I had this same one when I was small, and loved it. This is a 1957 edition remade although has same original recipes in it. It also has cooking terms and their meanings along with cooking and baking utensils and what they are used for. This is a great first cook book for small chefs. I loved it and so will my granddaughters.

Fact based, unbiased, and informative

This book serves its purpose well. The author presents the history and culture of the Middle East by laying out the facts, and weaving in editorial comments to enhance understanding of the facts. Reading this book will allow anyone to have a basic, but strong understanding of the region. I disagree strongly that this book is biased; quite to the contrary, it is one of the few English language books about the Middle East that presents the facts and the the persepctive of all sides truly evenly.

Informative overview of the entire Middle East

The Middle East for Dummies gives a fairly even-handed overview of the Middle East region - its people, history, traditions as well as political and religious conflicts. The writer has actually travelled to the region and spent time with many ordinary people there. Reading this book really made me think about the fact that people are just people everywhere. I learned a lot about the diversity of cultures and people within the Middle East and got a solid understanding of how the political conflict in the region developed. The writer gives both sides of the story, which is really refreshing for such a charged up subject. If you want to really learn something, this is a great book. I'd also beware of other reviewers here; look at their profiles and see how biased they are. I normally don't write reviews, but when I saw the quality of reviews on books on this subject, I really felt I should write something.

Makes sense of a complex region

The relevant history of the Middle East spans several thousand years. This book tries to cover that entire history in about 370 pages. This is a daunting task, but the author pulls this off reasonably well.

This book is written in the standard Dummies format. If you have read any of the other the other books in the Dummies series, then you already know that the Dummies books usually contain humor mixed with the main subject matter. As this book was published in the context of the post-9/11 world and the U.S. invasion of Iraq, humor is a tall order. Once again, the author succeeds admirably. There are a few tongue-in-cheek remarks, but not too many.

The coverage of the ancient Middle East is limited. This was probably necessary because of space limitations. Nevertheless, you will finish this book with at least a basic idea of who the ancient Egyptians, the Babylonians, and the Sumerians (etc., etc.) were. Here the Middle East for Dummies provides a good foundation for further reading of a more in-depth text, like "Ancient Mesopotamia: Portrait of a Dead Civilization" ISBN 0226631877 by Oppenheim. (I highly recommend this book if you want to take a deep dive into the ancient Middle East.)

The birth of Islam, the original Islamic conquests, and the Crusades are rolled into a chapter entitled "The Medieval Middle East." This chapter may disappoint some readers, not through any fault of the author, but because there is so much compressed into one chapter. The Crusades are a topic that most readers will probably want to read about in-depth, but they are covered in only two pages. (Consider Karen Armstrong's "Holy War" ISBN: 0385721404 for a detailed though somewhat politically correct account of the Crusades.)

The book succeeds in giving a succinct portrait of each of the major countries in the modern Middle East, and the history that shaped each country since the early twentieth century. The chapters on the modern Middle East include descriptions of the major wars in the region.

One of the most useful sections of the book is Chapter 25 (Ten Key Militant Groups). Here you get the history not only of Al-Qaeda, Hamas, and Hezbollah, but also lesser known groups that are active in Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey.

Davis also includes short descriptions of the multiple religious sects in the Middle East (not just the Shias and the Sunnis, but also the Copts, the Jacobites, and the various permutations of Judaism.)

If you are new to the history of the Middle East, this is not a bad place to start.
