AN EASY/MUST READ !
By K Mc
Althought I've never personally been touched by the horror of I.D. Theft I have heard far too many stories on the subject. Over the years I've collected a number of books, tapes, cd's, etc. on the subject ( alot of work) and I'm glad that Mr. Arata has taken on the challenge of putting together the PERFECT reference book.

This books contains everything you need (in one place) to better position yourself against becoming a victim. The information is presented in language you can understand and apply immediately. If this book had been available when I first started collecting information, my collection would be housed in the form of this book and this book only. IT HAS EVERYTHING YOU NEED! Way to go MR. ARATA.

There's an old joke about two campers who hear a menacing bear in the woods. One camper asks for the other's sneakers. "You can't outrun a bear", he is told. The first camper responds, "I just need to outrun you". This book will give you sneakers. It will make you a harder target for those people who want your good name and money, because having read the book, the author's recommendations will henceforth seem just good common sense. One day I was walking my dog and bent over to pick up a torn copy of my wife's brokerage statement that had blown half a block from our trash barrel. Get a shredder! Some companies may even allow employees to add their own documents to their secure disposal service bins for sensitive data marked for destruction. Mail that has our names, birthdates, social security numbers, account numbers, etc. can be used by others with fraudulent intent to open accounts for their benefit. Many of us have seen our credit reports, but did you know that a combined report from the three major credit agencies is available and why it might be important to see this side-by-side comparison? Bottom line: If you are a victim of identity theft this book will give you practical advice on who to contact and what forms to fill-out. The information in this book is important and it is presented in a straightforward, highly-readable format. (Editorial note: Chapter 15's "Ten Common Scams..." lists the "Nigerian letter", but neither it nor its more recent email mutations are discussed in what follows.)

After watching my sister go through the nightmare of having her identity stolen, I was determined to do everything I could to protect my family and friends in the future. I read Mr. Arata's extremely helpful and easy-to-follow advice from cover to cover... I now make everyone I know read a copy! So many people think that identity theft won't happen to them - but as this book reminds us, it's so easy for theives to take our most valuable information, unless you take proper precautionary steps. Thank you Mr. Arata for helping all us of!

A thorough and descriptive guide that is worth every penny!
By D. Reis
This book is a great guide for visiting the most popular national parks in the United States. It provides extensive information on parks such as Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Great Smoky Mountains, Olympic, Yosemite and Zion. Repanshek details the pros and cons of each park with candor with helpful comments about what to expect from the weather, wildlife and crowds.
Each chapter focuses on a different park. Within each chapter, he covers such topics as: geology, attractions, directions, fees, safety precautions, hikes, ranger programs, lodging, dining options, and other essentials such as post offices, lost and founds, etc. He writes in the first person, and often makes amusing commentaries about his own experiences and expectations. He does a thorough job covering each park - one can sense from reading that not only has he personally visited these places, but that he has returned to each a number of times and writes with the experience that is so valuable to those on a limited time schedule. He acknowledges that while each park could be a vacation of its own, many people can only spend a day or two at each place. To accomodate such travelers, he includes a section in each chapter on what to do if you only have one day to explore the park. This can be an incredibly useful tool if you are on a tight time schedule.
Frequently in travel guides, one gets the sense that the author is either an avid outdoorsman bent on roughing it, or a once-a-year vacationer who would rather die than sleep in a tent. Not so here - Repanshek clearly addresses both groups. He details all the available campsites in a park, along with his opinions on how clean/quiet/developed each site is; but also lists hotels and motels in the surrounding areas, ranging from the cheapest to the swankiest of lodgings. Same goes for the dining options. I personally appreciated this a great deal - my trip was primarily a camping excursion, but every once in a while we decided to splurge on decent hotels and were grateful for his frankness in describing what we could expect for our money.
My only gripe with this book is that it only covers 15 parks. Of course, due to its level of detail, it would be difficult to cover more. My hope is that Kurt Repanshek considers putting together two or more separate guides, for the Eastern and Western National Parks. He has a great eye for detail and leaves no stones unturned in his comprehensive tour of the American parks. I highly recommend this guide!

Amazon.com Review
Java is generally a well-documented language, but not every language feature is fully specified, documented, or identical across all platforms. Java Secrets takes you into this Java twilight zone and introduces you to the language's hidden power. The book's first section explores the inner workings of many Java mechanisms, including representation of data types in memory, argument passing, and the implementation of strings and arrays. The author also investigates niceties of threading models and garbage collection as implemented on different Java platforms.

A large group of undocumented classes (the sun.* packages) constitute what amounts to an undocumented Java application programming interface (API). The next large section of Java Secrets details these classes and how to use them safely. Although these classes ostensibly exist to support the Java environment, you'll learn how to use many of their interfaces for a variety of tasks including layout management; FTP, HTTP, mail, and news communication; data encoding; and character conversion. A final big chunk of the book is devoted to techniques for adding platform-dependent features to Java applications. This is a controversial subject for a supposedly platform-independent programming system, but the author provides a balanced assessment of the benefits and drawbacks.

All in all, this is one of the most interesting, unusual, and engagingly written books on Java programming we've seen. It's hard to imagine a serious Java programmer who wouldn't find it well worth his or her time.

Wait for the second edition.
By A Customer
This book promises a lot, and often delivers.
However, there are enough deficiencies that
the prospective buyer should consider waiting
for the second edition.

The biggest problem with the book is that, like
so many other Java titles, it was rushed out the
door. This is most apparent in the book's
figures, which range from perplexing to downright
misleading, due to widespread errors and omissions. For example, the diagram of the byte
layout for a little-endian machine is simply
wrong. Various other diagrams which show the
stack before and after various bytecode operations are half-finished -- literally. They
have one or two parameters filled in, and the
rest are blank.

It's mind-boggling that the editors thought it wasn't important enough to get these simple things right and delay the book's release slightly. But that seems to be the current thinking behind many current Java books.

Fortunately, Harold's text is generally correct, even when the figures aren't. So if you're willing to pointedly ignore the figures, you can get some good information from the book.

My only other complaint is a more subjective one: While promising to reveal Java secrets, much of the book focuses on the Sun classes, which are not guaranteed to be portable at all -- Harold addresses all this well, but the bottom line is that well over 50% of the book is devoted to these non-portable classes. If this is what you're looking for, it's a great resource, but if you are not interested in the inner workings of the Sun packages, you may be somewhat disappointed.

Interesting book on the Java Language - lots of mistakes
By A Customer
There sun classes are interesting, but outdated now. The book contains many typos and misprintings. This author seems to write books in a rapid succession and unfortunately includes a lot of mistakes. Mistake-riddled seems to be a common theme in most reviews of Rusty's books.

Great for reference.
By A Customer
This is not a book where you gonna learn how to write HalloWorld.java and that's GREAT!! This book allow you to learn some new things about java that you didn't know before, but not as much new stuff as the author promised you in the beginning of the book. If you have programmed java for a while and want to discover new tricks of java, this could be the book for you.

Amazon.com Review
Dogs for Dummies should be required reading for anyone considering purchasing or adopting a dog. In this comprehensive, yet concise and entertaining book, author Gina Spadafori, pet care columnist for Universal Press Syndicate and host of AOL's "Gina Spadafori's Pet Connection," makes a strong case for researching breeds and considering how certain types of dogs will or won't fit an owner's lifestyle. She doesn't pull any punches in describing the fate of dogs who have been wrongly chosen by well-intentioned owners, then given up for possible adoption, but probable euthanasia, because they are too active, too aggressive, poorly trained, or, appallingly, because they don't fit in with the owner's décor.

For readers considering a purebred dog, Spadafori provides extensive information on selecting a breed that will fit an owner's lifestyle, including sources of possible breeders such as magazines, Internet sites, and AKC breed clubs, and tips for screening breeders to weed out the unscrupulous or the ignorant. She strongly encourages adoption of shelter animals, though, pointing out that many of the dogs who wind up in shelters are healthy, young, and lovable animals who would make excellent pets for the right people. She recommends proceeding with caution when shopping pet stores for puppies due to the high percentage of pet store puppies that come from puppy mills where animals are bred indiscriminately and often kept in horrifying conditions. Likewise, she discourages purchasing puppies from "backyard breeders" believing that this only encourages irresponsible pet ownership by giving owners a reason to keep breeding their pets rather than altering them.

Once a breed or type of dog has been selected, Dogs for Dummies moves on to the practical aspects of ownership, including bringing home a puppy or adult dog, feeding and grooming, veterinary care from puppyhood to old age, training and dealing with behavioral problems, and traveling with pets. One of the most interesting chapters of the book debunks common myths about dogs--that a barking dog won't bite, for instance. Spadafori even includes a chapter on silly tricks to teach your dog and another on "must-see" dog sites on the World Wide Web.

From Library Journal
Dog owners of the world, rejoice! Whether you are a dog owner wannabe or a seasoned veteran, there is something useful, interesting, or entertaining for you in this handy reference of practical canine information. For those purchasing a dog, the first chapters present the important factors to consider. Readers with Internet access will appreciate the references to helpful listservs, newsgroups, and web sites. For those who already have a dog, valuable chapters cover the necessary equipment and supplies, early puppy training, veterinary care, house training, grooming, and more advanced basic training. The author, a syndicated pet-care columnist and host of "Gina Spadafori's Pet Connection" on America Online, offers sound advice on breeding, caring for aged animals, and traveling with Fido and provides a thumbnail sketch of various competitions. The "Dummies" icons make particularly useful information easy to locate. Highly recommended; public libraries will want to have more than one copy?it's sure to be popular.?Edell Marie Schaefer, Brookfield P.L., Wis.

As the local coordinator for Great Dane rescue and the person in my neighborhood that people come to with their dog questions this is THE book I recommend.
So much good information on dog pack behavior and adopting an older dog I recommend it to everyone thinking about adding a new dog to their family.
Especially good for people considering a second dog and how to integrate it into their home.

Should be required reading for prospective dog owners
By A Customer
I fully agree with the first sentence in Amazon.com's review: "Dogs for Dummies should be required reading for anyone considering purchasing or adopting a dog." Although at first glance it looks more like a reference for people who already have a dog (and it is great for this purpose), I found it even more useful as planning material BEFORE we adopted our dog. Reading through this book gave me a good, realistic idea of what I'd be getting into by adopting a dog. On their own, most people (including me) wouldn't realize or think of all the miscellaneous but necessary tasks that go along with dog ownership (teeth brushing, nail clipping, socializing, picking up dog poop during walks, etc.). The book helped me prepare the house, buy essential supplies, etc. beforehand. For example, I knew to have a crate ("safe space") already set up in the house before bringing the dog home, which helped tremendously in establishing a routine from the start. This book doesn't say much about characteristics of individual breeds, but there are dozens of other dog books out there that do. This book fills the neglected niche of "all-purpose dog owner's manual." I'd even recommend this book to those of you who already have a dog. You might learn something!

Excellent Introduction To Dogs for This Total Dummy
By E. Richards
I'm a cat person. I love cats. I know so much about cats, that vets think I am a former vet tech.

Dogs? I know a few things like wagging, the play bow, and "sit!". I am contemplating getting a dog, partially to keep my cats humble (a joke! OK?) and mostly to keep me company while I walk. I love to walk, so I figured a dog would be a great co-conspirator. We'll see if I do get one.

However, if I do get a dog, I understand now what is involved in keeping one. There's a discussion on breeds, which points to more sources of information on more obscure breeds. (An obscure dog might work better for me than the Dog in That Movie I Saw Last Week.) There is a lot of discussion about the work involved in raising a puppy and the aggravation of a "teenaged" dog being rambunctious and the mystery of the adult adoptee and the glorious karmic gift of taking in a senior dog.

There is not one, but two veterinary chapters. One is for puppies and one is for dogs in general. This is a good idea. As someone who has adopted adult cats and kittens, I can tell you that baby animals are a different, um, animal, medically than an adult.

There is a lot of coverage on behavior and discipline. You do have to be bossy with dogs. This is reiterated throughout the book.

One thing I was not aware of at all was the issue of grooming requirements. Anal sacs? Yeesh! Toenails? Gee, my cats have scythes and I don't care, but doggies need pedicures. Folks have told me they don't like to wash their dogs. It was a relief to read that you can wash your dog pretty frequently. I don't like smelly dogs. I do love freshly bathed dogs. Their fur is so yummy when they are clean.

I laughed out loud at her gleeful confessions about her love for paraphenalia, like toys and colorful leashes and trinkets. At least she's honest. Once you get past the basic kit, the rest of the dog goodies are for the owner. But still, a pink rhinestone collar on a Doberman or a black leather collar with studs on a toy poodle can be a joy to behold, even for someone who does not have a dog.

Now, a couple of readers ganged up on the book with long screeds about not leaving the dog alone while the human is at work. Well, if no one with a day job adopted a dog, we'd have a lot more dogs languishing in shelters. Its just a fact of life that the human has to go work to buy Kongs and Chewies. The crating and feeding and doggie day care recommendations all match what my dog owner friends have told me. Its an imperfect world and some folks can't take the dog to work and do hire a mid-day dog walker.

Now, this *is* a book for "Dummies". Its an excellent start. If you decide, after reading the book, that you want a particular breed or want to enter the dog in agility competitions, you need more information. Fortunately, this book will point you to that additional information. It does not leave you stranded. The book also points you to fun resources, like Letterman's Top Ten lists, including what the country would be like if a dog were president.

Do not buy this book!
By Susan Needham
The book was described on Amazon with the following comment "Get the latest on hotels, restaurants, sightseeing, sports, shopping, and nightlife" - however I discovered when it arrived that it is the 2003 edition. When I went back to Amazon to check, I did spot it mentioned, but not in an obvious place. I think the comment is misleading and it should be noted more prominently.

As I live overseas, I paid for this to be forwarded on to my address. It is not worth the cost of returning it - otherwise I would. Very disappointing.

Absolute First Stop for Beginning Programmers
By Model Citizen
I've been looking for just the right introduction to programming for some time. I've spent more than a dozen hours combing through the shelves in my local Borders and B&N, skimming over 50 so-called "introductory" texts, looking for one that I could really learn from. By way of background, I am an advanced computer user/tinkerer, but I'm completely inexperienced in the field of programming -- never so much as typed a lick of code.
In reviewing other books, I didn't want to start with a book about C, because conventional wisdom says that it's a bad idea to start with C (a procedural language) if you plan to use it to jumpstart a study of C++ or java (hybrid OOP languages). I also didn't want to start with a book on QBasic, because it seems to me that the language is pretty much obsolete. For me, I wanted to learn OOP, and that meant a commitment to C++ and/or java (preferably both, as each has its strengths and weaknesses, and they are similar and popular enough to study together).
That said, I looked at somewhat advanced introductory books by Deitel, Savitch, and Horton, all of which are extremely well-reviewed here on Amazon. I also looked at several books from Microsoft Press, as I planned on learning by using components of the Visual Studio. Horton's Beginning C++ came close, but its massive size and more advanced approach left me looking for a different introductory text (I plan on returning to Horton's book though, to supplement what I learn from Mr. Davis' book).
Finally, this new edition of C++ for Dummies came out just in time. This book really hits the mark on many levels: (1) it assumes no knowledge of programming; (2) it does a great job of explaining truly complex topics without going overboard or hitting you over the head; (3) it is clear and entertaining; and (4) it is new and compliant with the latest standards, which is more than I can say for books written, say, pre-1998.
Do yourself a favor -- if you have no programming experience and want to learn a cutting edge OOP language like C++ or java, start here, then use that knowledge to branch out to more advanced material. Personally, I'm supplementing this reading with Horton's Beginning C++ and Beginning Java 2 (JDK 1.3 Version), and Bruce Eckel's highly praised Thinking in Java.
Good luck!

This C++ developer came away impressed
By Stephen Foster
Background (why you might care what I think): I've programmed and taught programming for 20+ years, in time migrating to C++.
The title, of course, is an oxymoron: You are mistaken if you think you can master C++ without sooner or later being able to chew your way through the following:

"It has always been possible to overload a member function in one class with a member function in another class. With inheritance, however, you can overload a base class member function with a member function in a subclass as well."
However, by the time this book gets to where that quote is lifted from (roughly halfway through), Mr. Davis has done quite a credible job of preparing you for it. He sometimes falls down badly: his explanation of pointers completely neglects to mention the implicit referencing that is part of every normal assignment statement. The expression "variableX = variableY" (in all computer languages) actually means "the address pointed to by variableX is assigned the value pointed to by variableY", not "variableX is given the value of variableY". Most students would be much less confused by pointers if he had started his discussion by pointing out that all variables are actually pointers by nature.
Given the rather astonishing subtlety, complexity, and even beauty of full-bore C++, 400-odd pages are not going to make you into an overnight master (reading Stroustrup is the only way to do that) . The pace is extremely rapid, but the author succeeds fairly well in what he sets out to do, which is to explain the most complex computer language (by far) in clear and understandable terms.
If you have no programming background and no outside help, you will be quickly lost. And yet I firmly believe that C++ is the best language for a beginning programmer to start with, even if for no other reason than to avoid the development of bad habits.
I am still searching for a book that will thoroughly explain the fundamentals of programming from the ground up, using C++ as the starting point. However, if you do have some programming experience, and want to bootstrap your way to C++, this book is a good choice.
The "humour", on the other hand...

Riddled with errors / typos and assumes prior knowledge
By R. Meerman
I'm in my 3rd year Computer Science studies, and am coming from a Java background after fiddling with C/C++ on embedded systems and decided some structured learning was needed.

On the whole this book rambles quite a bit, but that's to be expected for something aimed at beginninger - however this means that most of the learning meat is learnt from examples; which is a very bad thing as there are a lot of inconsistencies between the example code and the passage describing it.

Specific examples of what I mean:

On page 46 the author says that theoretically 10.0 == (100 % 10), and says to revise the modulo operator if you're confused. I'm pretty certain that 100 / 10 does not have a remainder, and hence that 100 % 10 = 0, and not 10 as the book states.

On pages 52-53 the passage says the code takes two numbers from the keyboard and does something with them, while the code does in-fact instantiate the variables directly, and does not accept any input at all.

There are also plenty of typos, both in the general writing ("was is 0x6 | 0x3?") and the code (page 52 "0x2" is written as "0x[subscript 2]").

Some of what is said is just plain wrong, for instance there are 8 bits in a byte, not 4. (Page 49).

I also got the impression that prior knowledge is being assumed, there are terms and concepts used casually, such as the default word length on an average PC is 32bit, without making it clear what this means - ints and floats were described in terms of what values they could contain, not their binary lengths.

And finally many important concepts are not explained fully, such as XOR, which does not even have a description in the operator table on page 50, it does have a partial truth-table though - why the other two cases were not included I have no idea, certainly my understanding of XOR did not come from this book.

I'm seriously glad that I'm borrowing this book, and didn't buy it myself. It seems to cover all the important topics, just not very cleanly, and I certainly wouldn't dream of inflicting it on a beginner. It's merely annoying if you have enough prior knowledge (of binary and how computers work with it, of logic (NOT, AND, OR, XOR) etc).

A realistic point of view of what a WDW vacation WILL be
    By T. Distaso
We are planning our 3rd trip to Disney world.

We go with small children, currently 3 and 5.

For the first time I decided to look for a guide book beyond just surfing the disney site.

I am so glad I picked this book!!!

It is WAY more then a personal opinion.

It is more of a colaborating effort of many people that collect facts and try to present them in a realistic fashion, to help the averge family. They are also not afraid to post critisim and differing opinions readers have submitted to them.

I feel being a bit more prepared with save my husband and I a ton of Agony nd marital distress. Disney may be the happiest place on earth, but you will not always be in a state of Bliss. It can be very overwhelming at times, It can be hard for you while in the park to figure out where you want to go and how to get there. ALso Many parents underestimate young kids and dont realise there are many parts of Disney that can be downright scary if your child is not prepared. They covered this in a Disney with kids section very adequately. IMO EVERY parent of young kids should read this to prepare themselves and their kids.

This book is peppered with awesome time and money saving tips. not only by the writers, but with letter quotes they have included from readers of books from previous years.

I was amazed and impressed by many charts they have compiled!! they have a Chart that shows the crowd levels for each park for EVERY DAY of the year (late 2004-most of 2005)!!!!! what days to avoid certain parks and what days to hit certain parks based on years of statistics.

They even have a website that goes with the book and can help you pick ticket options and park "touring plans" that are fit to what you want and need in your visit. (I have yet to try these out but am MOST impressed and cant wait to work on it.)

It never fails at some point our "just go with the flow" attitude hits a snag and we end up everyday wasting at least an hour standing around like morons with no clue where to go, what we want to do and shooting each other death glares. Trying to figure out how to experience the best Disney experience but not feel to rushed. Because with young kids you can not rush Disney or push them too far. Oh, dont get me wrong as this book hints, even if you do everything worng and things do go as planned you will love your Disney Vacation! But going to Disney with a realistic attitude will hlep you have a better vacation.

I love how they rate the hotels (both in and off park). character experineces, food.... While it may seem a bit harsh to many readers it is refreshing and IMO put people in a realistic mind frame of what to expect from disney beyond the sugar coated comercials that only show smiling people riding everyride and walking right up to characters(yeah right like that will EVER happen!)

take it from a Disney World vetran, this guide is worth the...
    By M. mcgee
    investment.
i've been to disney world dozens of times since the late 70's.
if i had guide like this before i went to disney as an adult, i would have had a much better time.
this will help you save time, save money, and give you insights that you might never find out on your own.
if you are staying at the parks multiple days, please, take the advice of - leaving around noon, buy lunch outside the park, go back to the hotel and nap and/or swim, then go back at about 4 to 5.
the book might come off as a field guide for battle, but in a way it is. your battling to not lose all of your money, not to waste your precious vacation time, not to lose your patience, not to get overly tired.
this will definately regenerate your energy, reboost your patience, and more importantly, help keep your sanity.
buy this, read it, know it, and bring it along before your 1st trip to disney.
    9/27/06 edit,
one of the great things about this book, is that it offers customer oppinions, even the ones that contradict the book.

    Very Good Recomendations
    By renoman
OK - I have used this as a reference.

Mostly the guide is accurate in the plans presented.

It is a bit wordy for the more experienced WDW guest.

Most of the resturant and hotel info I have found to be accurate. The relative number of "stars" given to them, IMHO, is in line with my experiences.

You have to wade thru a lot to get to the meat in this guide, but overall the info is of benifit.
