good start for getting references
By phylneff
lots of info about black hat feng shui, i have other books and just recently started to explore. it talks about also the items you may want to buy to increase the tranquility of your home and the energy flow, as well as the 'lucky ' part, which i take with a big can of salt. i believe in chi, but i don't believe the luck part. that is up to the individual person. but the flow and placement of objects for airflow and tranquility , I'm all for. clutter is also not feng shui.

Could be better
By Michal Bloch
The book is pretty thick, which could suggest a lot of inspirring training tips and hints. Unfortunately it fails to deliver. Most if info could be implied to any breed, and there's not that much useful hints about actually raising your dog.

Okay - but not great
By Sakeena
When I bought my little yellow lab puppy, I searched the internet and scoured reviews to buy the best book to prepare me for my new endeavor. I purchased this book, and I am sad to say, I was a little disappointed. It barely skims the surface of each topic, and did not prepare me to be a first-time puppy owner, or a first-time lab owner. I highly recommend Barron's "Training Your Labrador Retriever". I just bought it (my puppy is three months old) and I wish I had bought it first - it has much more information on how to handle your new puppy!

If you could remember your own potty training, you’d probably recall a time filled with anxiety and glee, frustration and a sense of accomplishment, triumphal joy and shamed remorse. You’d remember wanting so much to make mommy and daddy happy, and at the same time to make them pay for being so darned unreasonable. And you’d recall feeling incredibly grown up once you got it right. Maybe if we could remember our own potty training, it wouldn’t be so tough when it came our turn to be the trainers. But as it is, most of us feel like we can use all the expert advice and guidance we can get.

Potty Training For Dummies is your total guide to the mother of all toddler challenges. Packed with painless solutions and lots of stress-reducing humor, it helps you help your little pooper make a smooth and trauma-free transition from diapers to potty. You’ll discover how to:

  • Read the signs that your tot is ready
  • Motivate your toddler to want to give up diapers
  • Kick off potty training on the right foot
  • Foster a team approach
  • Deal with setbacks and pee and poop pranks
  • Make potty training a loving game rather than a maddening ordeal

  • Say the right things the right way
  • Reinforce success with praise and rewards
  • Switch to training pants

Huh?
By The Cool Guy
As a dad, I was really looking forward to a book on potty training to help me with my 2-year old. This book is lousy though. Why?

1. Stupid Writing. I got pretty sick of constantly reading all the sappy, "witty" remarks. "Dancing the Potty Mambo"? Give me a break!

2. Stupid Advice. This book keeps telling you to talk to your kid like he/she is an adult. I'm sorry, but a 2-year-old just cannot comprehend a long drawn-out explanation of why you want them or don't want them to do something. How about just saying, "Don't do that!" or "Hey, you want to try this?" That seems to work just fine for me. Why give your kid a doctoral dissertation every time you want them to do something? What's wrong with just telling your kid what to do (nicely), and expecting them to be obedient?

3. Repeating Content. This book kept repeating itself OVER and OVER. Okay, I got it already! I strongly feel that the author wanted to push this book over the 200-page mark when all that needed to be said could probably have been accomplished in about 50 pages (or less).

4. Too Many References. This book constantly refers to other chapters. I once counted 6 different references to other chapters on one page. I am not kidding! Huh? Is potty training really that freakin' complicated? All I want is some general ideas on how to go about it, how to get started, and a few good tips. I don't need all these detailed references. (Nor do I need the phrase "Potty Mambo" repeated to me ad infinitum.)

Here is all I wanted to know:

-How do I get started?

-What do I do?

-How often do I need to try it?

-Should I go for pullups or just keep him in diapers for the moment?

Maybe this book got to all of that, but I quit after page 60. I just couldn't take it anymore. After hearing the phrases "Stay Positive" and "Potty Mambo" repeated to me for the umpteenth time, I had to quit. I returned this book and got my money back.

If I were to say anything good about this book, I would say that it has a few good tips, surrounded by about 180 pages of filler.

Potty training still looms ahead. Will I be successful? Probably. But to this book I say, No Thanks.

Potty Mambo? Ick.
By SandyCB
My oldest daughter was a tough sell with potty training, so, desperate, I tried this book against my better judgement, having had little success with other books in the Dummy series. I still have no success with Dummy books. This book promoted doing potty training all at once in an intensive push. This might work for some kids, but it is by no means the best method for all kids. My pediatrician, father of six, says that kids will train when they're ready, no matter what you do, and forcing the issue will just take forever and frustrate all involved. I can't prove him wrong. Forcing a "potty mambo" on a kid who has decided that she prefers not to use the potty leads to a war you don't want to fight. (Note that the kid in question knew how to use the potty; she just didn't want to, as in "but Mommy, I don't want to use the potty", screamed at full blast in public restrooms everywhere.) My other complaint is that some of their "facts" made me fear that my daughter had major problems, when it turns out she was, in fact, totally normal. There have to be books out there with better ideas, or we'd all be better off waiting, as a friend did, until one day her 3-year-old said "Mommy, I want to wear underwear now." And within a week she was.

I Felt Like A Dummy...
By K. Weirich
My daughter is only 17 months old, but her doctor said that at her 18 month check up we will begin to talk about potty training. Since she is my first, I like to become somewhat knowledgable about different milestones she will be accomplishing so I set out to read some potty training books. Now, even though I am a first time mom, I am not stupid. This book made me feel just that. I felt like the author was talking to my 17 month old rather than her 28 year old mom. I was never really sure what points the author was trying to make and the ideas that were used weren't in my opinion good. Not to mention, this book was a little longer than I would've liked which might have also attributed to my dislike of this book. I found that Mommy I Have to Go Potty by Jan Faull and Parenting Guide to Toilet Training by Anne Kruger were much easier, shorter and more helpful then this book.

Songwriting For Dummies.
By A Customer
I learned some good things from this book, but I could have learned more if the book had been proof-read. The authors let a lot of obvious mistakes make it into the final version of the book which makes it hard to follow some of their examples. For instance they may go to great troubles in the text to explain what an ABABC rhyme scheme is; and then for an example of an ABABC rhyme scheme, they show you a lyric that is really in AABBC rhyme scheme. The examples are where most of the errors occur. The actual written text is pretty accurate; but when they magnify and pictorially break down song lyrics, a lot of times, their example fits another form than what they've been describing to you in the text which can confuse a new learner. No one seemed to realize this before the book was published either.

Great beginners guide, examples aside
By Beau J. Randall
For what it is and what it's meant to achieve, I would give this 5 stars. It covers all the bases in just enough depth to get one's feet wet so as to not tune the average reader out. One might argue some things could be embellished upon and others really aren't about the art of songwriting itself - for instance the chapters dealing with the business end of things vs. a somewhat brief chapter on chord structure. I feel a 'Dummies' book isn't so much educational as it is to point you in the right direction - you may find the realities of the music business change your attitude toward songwriting. It's nice to have the basics all laid out on the table before you start investing yourself.
Where I fault this book is in the song examples covered. For the under 30 demographic, which I imagine this book is targeted at, the examples here are rather obscure. A good three quarters of them are from the 70s and earlier. That in itself I don't have a problem with, but where's the Zep, Hendrix, Who, Doors, Floyd, Beach Boys references? Aside from the Beatles and Berry and Elvis, there's not much mention of songs that would be indelible in a young person's mind, IOW, bands that made a huge social impact. Same with the newer stuff but it's even more spotty here, little mention of the likes of that class from a decade ago of Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. - Train and Nickelback groundbreaking? Huh?!? My ears must have turned inside out. And one of the authors (a guy who co-wrote Eye of the Tiger), mentions his songs in examples ad-nauseum. It's one thing to casually mention some here or there to get his perspective as the writer, but IMO this comes off like a sleazy ploy to pump up royalties. I say this not as a fan of the all the bands or eras of music above but simply to illustrate the irony in what is preached by this book, that in which the successful writer should make his best effort to connect with her audience. I guarantee picking apart Survior and 38 Special songs is not the best avenue to achieve this.
All in all, this book is great info, just full of little things that might make you go 'hmmm'.

Smart Book for the Songwriting 'Dummie'
By Mike Sarzo
I bought this book when a musician friend recommended it to me. As someone who writes lyrics and who doesn't have even the most basic knowledge of musical terminology, I was looking for something that wasn't too technical and something that wouldn't completely confuse me when I tried to read it. This book definitely fit the bill.

Songwriting for Dummies isn't perfect. It could have done without all the self-promotion of Survivor and 38 Special and it could have done with more late '60s, early '70s music. I was disappointed to find that Stevie Nicks was mentioned in connection with "Bootylicious." Plus, the more technical explanations of writing music caused me to skim over a couple of the chapters. But the overall package gave me what I was looking for.

Despite going through a long period when I would start reading a book, put it down and then forget about it, I concentrated on reading this book and finished it in a matter of days. I enjoyed picking it up and reading it and going back over certain chapters again when necessary.

If you want to find a book that covers chord progressions in great detail, this book isn't for you, but if you want something that touches on the basics of lyrics and melodies, plus gives you an example of the kind of artist rights issues many songwriters face, this is a good reference.

An excellent springboard to more in-depth study...

I've seen dozens of World War 2 movies, but I never had an understanding of what really happened during the war, and why. I needed a book that would lay a foundation of understanding so I could put everything in perspective. With that in mind (and with the pending release of the Band of Brothers DVD) I decided to get "World War 2 for Dummies". I read this book faster and with more intensity than just about any other book in my life. I couldn't believe how interested I became in the campaigns, and it was great to have a light bulb come on whenever I connected an event with a movie or book. I couldn't believe how many scenes from movies and books came to mind as I read.
Because I am not a historian, or well read on the subject, I can't speak to any historical inaccuracies or bias in the text. There were also no footnotes, so you have to take all the facts and figures at face value, with no help in finding sources for further study.
I would have liked to have seen many more maps, as I found myself constantly looking for a map of territory being discussed, and frequently couldn't find it. I would have also liked footnotes pointing to movies and books that pertain to the subject at hand, either to tie it together, or point to further study. I would have also liked sidenotes mentioning controversial aspects of the war (maybe a "list-of-10") discussing areas of conspiracy or debate among historians, if just to acknowledge their presence. Things like "Did FDR know about the attack on Pearl Harbor beforehand?".
Since finishing this book, I've found myself looking at WW2 much more clearly; as I browse titles of books I might like to read, I can recognize battles and people. And I get excited about recording stuff off of the History Channel, as it is much easier to understand.
And now I finally know what they're so worried about in the "Sound of Music"; I've seen the movie many times, and never knew what the heck the "Anschluss" was!
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a soup-to-nuts overview of the politics, people and battles of World War 2. My dilemma now is whether to study WW2 further, or read some of the other History for Dummies (World, American, and Civil War) books.

Very good basic overview
By Fly Guy
I've always known a bit about the ETO (European Theater Ops), but not much at all about the PTO (Pacific Theater Ops). I found the opening chapter to the book especially helpful, as it explained why certain countries aligned the way they did before the war started. It also does a good job setting up the Japanese Empire's goals and directives, which I think gets ignored quite a bit in history classes. If you're a casual student of military history who wants a good foundation for deeper study, this is a great book (especially for high school students who want a good, easy read without getting bogged down in incredible detail). In addition, the maps are simplistic and easy to understand re: army movements.

The best guide for Dummies
By Ricky
This is definitely a classics for all beginners.
The book gives a full coverage of the War in very simple English. To help readers to understand key events and persons, maps and photographs are used extensively. While each chapter can be readed independently, my favourites are Chapter 6, 11 and 14.
A must-read for all readers who are interested in this subject.

What They Forgot To Tell You When They Made You A Manager
By Dave Sparks
First, let me disclose that I am a client of the author. So perhaps I should be upset with Mr. Brounstein for putting out a book that has the same information I paid him thousands of dollars to teach me. Buy the book.
Remember the first time you dealt with a difficult employee - the knot in your stomach as you called them into your office. Learn about giving constructive feedback instead of criticism, and you may just turn a problem employee into a model employee - it happened to me. The knot may not go away completely, but with this technique it will definitely be more manageable. Buy the book.
Work smarter not harder. Learn about Results-based Performance Management, and get results, not just busy employees. Teach your employees to manage themselves by holding them accountable for results, not just activities that you give them to do. Buy the book.
Learn about coaching techniques such as Tutoring With Questions that will get your employees to start answering their own questions - and getting the right answers. Buy the book.
About a year ago I suddenly found myself in charge of 100 employees that had been thrown together from different cultures as the result of mergers and corporate realignment. Through the techniques I learned from Marty that are revealed in this book, I have been able to build an effective team of managers who in turn have helped me turn the organization around. A year ago, we were missing committed deadlines one after another. Now, we consistently meet and often beat our commitments. I often refer to my copy of the book for a refresher on Marty's techniques and regularly refer my managers to the book when they run into difficult situations. Buy the book.
Just in case I forgot to mention it: Buy the book.

Coaching & Mentoring for Dummies
By ron
This is a great "how to" book. It has plenty of "laundry lists" that all coaches must keep in mind at all times. It is one of the most comprehensive coaching books that I've seen for a long time. This "on my desk" book is guarranted to have plenty of high-liteing and dog-ears within a short period of time. This is a must for new or seasoned coaches and coaches-of-coaches.

Good book for managers, who want to learn to adopt a more 'coaching' management style.
By Astrid_Dom
This is a good book for managers, who want to learn to adopt a more 'coaching' management style.
It teaches you e.g. how to give constructive feedback.

If you are more serious about coaching, I recommend Coaching: Evoking Excellence in Others,3rd Edition.

Other good books:

If you coach (or want to coach) executives, or others on a high level, I recommend: Executive Coaching with Backbone and Heart: A Systems Approach to Engaging Leaders with Their Challenges

And if it's your job to coach sales people, try this one: Coaching Salespeople into Sales Champions: A Tactical Playbook for Managers and Executives

If you are in the coaching business, it's worth reading all 3 or 4 of them. They are complementary, each covering different aspects of coaching. Combining their insights will help you deepen your understanding.

Exactly what I was looking for
By JBG
I am a new dog owner and have been looking for a book to help me train my new dog.

After searching and reading reviews here on amazon I ordered a few books. It happened to be during the holidays so I still don't have them (that's another story). However, in the mean time, I found a used copy of this book at a local used book store. I have to say I am very pleased with it.

If you read the reviews of the popular basic dog training books here on Amazon you can be really confused about what to do. Does pack theory work? Is there a dominance hierarchy? Are choke chains cruel? Can positive reinforcement alone work? What should I be expecting of my dog? Lots of questions and recommendations that seem at odds with one another.

The author of this book cuts through a lot of that and really makes a lot of sense. Further, he gives practical, step by step advice on how to handle problems and do very basic dog training. Actual things you can use to make a difference to your dog. After reading about half of his book I was immediately able to make use of his recommendations and techniques and my dog responded. Obviously there is no magic, it will take work on my part, but I could see improvement right away.

Further he lays out some things that seem pretty basic in hind site, but I as a new dog owner didn't realize. Important things, like don't let your dog play with cloth toys and then expect your dog not to think every cloth thing (like a sock) is a toy.

He talks about different collars to use during training, on leash v. off leash training, good and bad toys, good and bad trainers. He spends a good deal of time teaching you how your dog learns and how any training is making use of those basic concepts. He also makes sure you understand that if you own a dog, all your interaction with it is "dog training" and that you may very well be teaching the dog things you had no idea you were teaching him good and bad (usually bad).

His focus is always on praise and reward, but understands that actual correction is appropriate as well when done properly, however none of the specific instructions he offers that I have read so far ever include any kind of physical correction, it is always things like withdrawing attention, stern commands, a cross look.

He offers practical steps for what he calls foundation training, come, sit, stay, which to a new dog owner like myself is really important.

Anyway, after only reading half the book and only using its advice for about 3 days I have to say I am 100% happy with this book.

ABC Dog Training Excellent Choice
By C. Moody
With in just a few hours of reading this book I was getting my dogs to behave. Steve talkes about a dogs place and how to make that happen. My dogs don't rule the house any more. We do and we have 5 dogs. My dogs don't jump on the furniture or on us anymore. Steve tells how the dogs can have learned behaviors that truely aren't their fault. He will explain how to correct these unwanted behaviors. Don't drop that dog off the human society get this book and work it out with your dog. You will be amazed. Easy reading and it all makes sense.
