About the Author
About the Authors Reid Bramblett is the author of Frommer's Tuscany & Umbria and Europe for Dummies as well as coauthor of Frommer's Italy from $70 a Day. He also helped found guidebookwriers. com (see chapter 2). When not on the road, he splits his time between his native Philadelphia and Columbia, Missouri. Londoner Richard Jones, author of Frommer's Memorable Walks in London, has been devising walking tours of his city since 1982. He has written the books Walking Haunted London and That's Magic, as well as the script for the drama-documentary Shakespeare in London. He has also written and presented drama documentaries about Shakespeare in London (1999) and Jack the Ripper (1997). All four of Joseph S. Lieber's grandparents emigrated from Eastern Europe at the turn of the 20th century, settling in New York City, where he was born and raised. Mr. Lieber lived in Hungary for several years in the early 1990s. He presently practices law in Boston and is the coauthor of Frommer's Budapest & the Best of Hungary and Frommer's Europe. Christina Shea served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Hungary and subsequently directed Peace Corps language-training programs in Lithuania and Kyrghyzstan. She's the author of the novel Moira's Crossing (St. Martin's) and a coauthor of Frommer's Budapast & the Best of Hungary and Frommer's Europe. Herbert Bailey Livesey is a native New Yorker. After an early career as a university administrator, he decided to devote himself to writing full-time. He's the author or coauthor of 10 travel guides (including Frommer's New England, Frommer's Canada, and Frommer's Montréal & Québec City), a novel about deep-sea sport fishing, and several books on education and sociology. His articles have appeared in Travel & Leisure, Food & Wine, and Playboy. Nikolaus Lorey was born in Germany and has lived most of his life in Europe, from Austria to Italy; he now resides in Munich. A freelance writer since 1964, he has long contributed to this guidebook and writes detective stories as well. Sherry Marker's love of Greece began when she majored in classical Greek at Harvard. She has attended the American School of Classical Studies in Athens and studied ancient history at the University of California at Berkeley. Author or coauthor of a number of guides to Greece (such as Frommer's Greece and Frommer's Greek Islands), she has published articles in the New York Times, Travel & Leisure, and Hampshire Life. She's also the coauthor of Frommer's Europe and has written books on a variety of subjects, including a history of London for young adults. John Mastrini is a former television news anchor from the United States who has lived in Prague since 1989, where he works as a journalist and media consultant. He's coauthor of Frommer's Prague & the Best of the Czech Republic. Hana Mastrini, a native of the western Czech spa town of Karlovy Vary, became a veteran of the "Velvet Revolution" as a student in Prague in 1989. She began contributing to Frommer's guides while helping her husband, John, better understand his new home in the Czech Republic. George McDonald has lived in Amsterdam and Brussels as a former editor of the Sabena Belgian World Airlines and deputy editor of the KLM Royal Dutch Airlines in-flight magazines. He's now a freelance journalist and travel writer and has written extensively about the Netherlands and Belgium for international magazines and guidebooks, such as Frommer's Amsterdam and Frommer's Belgium, Holland & Luxembourg. Mark Meagher, a resident of Boston, is currently pursuing graduate studies in architecture. He's coauthor of Frommer's Ireland, Frommer's Ireland from $60 a Day, Frommer's Portable Dublin, and Frommer's Greece. Haas Mroue is a freelance writer who grew up spending summers in the south of France. He lived in Paris while studying at the American University, then returned to the States to graduate from the UCLA Film School. His articles, poems, and short stories have been widely published, and he's coauthor of Frommer's Gay & Lesbian Europe. He currently divides his time among Southern California, Chicago, and France. Good for the cities included

Just returned from a 2 month trip using the 2002 guide. I found the recommendations for the restaurants to be excellent. After realizing that the Frommer's writers and I had the same tastes, I made it a point of seeking out all of their 'starred' recommendations for restaurants. The sightseeing descriptions and recommendations were also quite good. The hotel recommendations were not as good. A few of the hotels we stayed in that were not 'starred' or listed as a 'Find' were not as comfortable as hotels in other books.
We traveled with this Frommer's, Rick Steves, Lonely Planet and Rough Guides through France, Belguim, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Hungary, and Italy. We liked Rick Steves' recommendations for lodging, Frommer's for restaurants and both for sightseeing. Lonely Planet and Rough Guides were not used if in a Frommer's city. If in a Rick Steve's city (but not Frommer's) we used Lonely Planet for restaurant recommendations (not as good a Frommer's but better than Rick Steves).
Background: Two travelers, professional, early 30s with enough money to stay out of the hostels, but did not want to blow the bank of 5 star lodging. Rick Steve's packing philosophy. Both traveler's love to eat!!

Frommer's 2001 Europe : From $70 a Day

I recently returned from a 3 month tour of Europe and took this book with me. While it did have a number of major European cities in it the actual information about them was definetly lacking. I found my self usually better off with out a book at all as opposed to only having this one. Several other travelers we met felt the same way and some were lucky enough to have Lonely Planet guides. For the money spent I'll stick to them or Rick Steves in the future. i.e. This book would take you to the train station/ subway but then fall short on what the heck to do to get a ticket!!! Which is important information stranded in 20 different stations/ subways a month each with different customs. Frommer's did do an excellent job of pointing out all of the gay and lesbian districs and bars in each city and the gay friendly hotels and shops... but they also have a strickly gay guide to Europe as well. The amount of space used for this information could have been better allocated for more pertinent information. I'll have to give a thumbs down on this book. Take something else with you or take nothing at all.

Capitals only

Frommer's does a good job with the general hints on travelling cheaper, but unless you plan on visiting only the major cities and capitals only, look for another book. There are 24 major cities and surrounding areas covered from Ireland to Budapest, but that's not many cities in comparison with all of Europe. I only will have a short time in Europe and that means that I will only be able to visit two of the cities listed and have to use another book for everything in between. Lonely Planet is much more inclusive and definitely covers the lower price scale.
