Informative and educational

Martial Arts for Dummies is a delightful and educational book that dispels many of the myths the uninitiated may have heard about the martial arts. The book includes examples of common situations you may run into when first entering the training hall. For example, how to choose a school or art that is right for you, what to look for in a good martial arts instructor, and the meaning of the belt, uniform, and rituals.
The easy, conversational tone of the text makes it difficult to put this book down. After fifteen years of everyday training in the martial arts, I read this book cover to cover and found myself thinking "yes, that's how it is." The chapters on "The Part of Tens" toward the end of the book provide an excellent quick reference whenever you need that energy boost for tonight's class. I would enthusiastically recommend this book to both beginners and advanced students of the martial arts.

A great place to start

Better than I expected. This book is a cogent and pithy overview of martial arts, what they, what they are not, how to get involved with them, and how to succeed if you choose to do so. It covers the basics of a good cross-section of styles including karate, kung fu, tae kwon do, judo, akido, escrima, hapkido, hapkido, muay thai, jeet kune do, and tai chi, all the major players. The author briefly discusses the martial culture, uniforms, and ranking systems so that you know what to expect. Further, she helps you understand how to pick a style and instructor, make the most of your training, know when/where you should use your martial knowledge, and how to avoid injuries during the process. It is comprehensive, well-written, and generally entertaining.

Happly surprised.

At first glance, this book seemed to be another, "these are the planets and this is the sun..." type of third grader material because of the title. It was much more. Filled with websites, interesting facts, and tons of first-timer tips, this book is excellent for some that is wanting to get there feet wet in astronomy. Well organized and entertaining, I would buy it merely for the references to all the websites.

This is a terrific book for any astronomer, serious or casual. If you have ever looked up at the stars or moon, and started asking questions to yourself, they are answered here. All of the following topics are covered: Explanations of antimatter and dark matter, how to search for comets (and instructions for reporting discovered comets), common mistakes of astronomy, upcoming eclipses planet locations and oppositions, what most people don't know about astronomy (did you know there are probably microscopic meteorites in your hair every time you walk outside?), and hours and hours more of extremely pleasurable reading! I LOVE this book; if you know how to read, you will be able to understand some of the most difficult amstronomy concepts!

This book is well written and contains more than enough information for beginners and most advanced dog owners. If you are considering getting a Rottweiler and want to know what to expect, get this book. If you already own a Rottweiler, this book has excellent tips and hints on the care and well-being of your dog. Thank you to Richard G. Beauchamp for an excellent book.

This is a very good book. Not too long and not too short. It was everything you need to know about the rottweiler from puppy care to training. I purchased other books that are rottweiler specific but this is the book that I always come back and look at.

A Wonderful Rottweiler Reference

I just got a seven week old Rottweiler puppy and I needed a reference to help me learn about the breed and to learn basic information to teach the dog certain rituals. I found this book and it is a true gem. This book will teach you about the breed, whether or not the dog is right for you, and a plethora of other useful information about the dog. Rottweilers are actually one of the most loving breeds of dog that there is and one part of the book will help people to realize that these dog are great dogs that are good with children and people if they are treated and taught well from the first day that you bring your dog home.
This superlative reference is broken up into is broken up into four parts with numerous chapters that fall under that specific topic. The main things that are discussed in this great book are getting to know Rottweilers, where you find out about the dog and whether or not the dog is right for you; the next part is called searching for a soulmate where you get information on knowing what you are looking for in the dog and how to choose what to get; part three of the book discusses how you can keep your Rottweiler in good health by learning about the dog's basic anatomy, feeding and exercise rituals, and health problems; the final part lists ten reasons to own or not to own a Rottweiler, and training and traveling tips. This is a handy reference because of the multitude of topics that are discussed in this book.
I detracted one star from the book because I felt that the training information in the book was not specific and that I didn't get a great deal of information regarding my dog's habits for doing bathroom rituals. I didn't get a lot of information as to how many times a day I should take my dog out and how often my dog should be fed. Because of this I recommend another book in the "Dummies" series on training dogs.
As with all "Dummies" books the information that is found here is concise and to the point, written in an easy-to-read manner. I recommend this great reference to anybody that is looking for information on the Rottweiler breed of dogs. These dogs are one of the most loving creatures to walk the planet but this book is very neccesary. If you do not read this book you may be letting your dog do things that may result in long term problems, behavioral or physical. I will be sure to use this book in the future to take care of my Rottweiler. This is a great reference that is worth buying.

About the Author
Adan R. Penilla, II is President of the Colorado Registry of Interpreters, Pikes Peak Affiliate. He has his NAD IV interpreting certification and his legal qualification. In 1995, he was an interpreter at the World Federation of the Deaf in Vienna and is currently teaching ASL at Trinidad State Junior College. He has written an ASL Quick Study Bar Chart and WW II for the Deaf. He lectures on Sign language throughout the United States and is currently working on his PhD.

Angela Lee Taylor is the Interpreter Coordinator at the Colorado Springs School for the Deaf and Blind. She was born deaf and is a native of Dixon, Illinois. Taylor graduated from Illinois School for the Deaf in 1985 and later received her bachelor's degree from Gallaudet University in 1997. During the past five years, Taylor has taught ASL for Pikes Peak Community College, Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind, and the community. Taylor has annually coordinated for the statewide Deaf and Hard of Hearing Symposium for four years running. She is a tutor for the shared Reading Project (SRP) and is also involved with ASLTAC. Taylor resides in Pueblo, Colorado.

This is a very good book. I was skeptical about ordering used unseen books but I am glad I did. Also it is very up to date on words and teaching you to put together sentences. Very inciteful.

Great book for beginners.

This is a very good book for learning individual signs the right way. The signs are accurate, however you will find that some may vary greatly in the deaf community of your area. The ASL speaking community varies greatly, like most other language groups, from one geographic location to another. It more or less amounts to slang. Be assured, if you sign something the deaf do not understand, they will tell you. Then you can spell the word to them and they'll tell you how they sign it. This book is a great start, it has a lot of signs, doesn't really touch on grammar much, but great book to start with.

I realise that these book reviews are supposed to serve mainly to critique the authors' abilities to impart knowledge on the given subject matter (and the case of this book that was done well) but I thought it was important to also comment on the subject matter itself.

Firstly, on the quality of the book; this book is well written, covers a lot of ground and I would recommend it to people of almost any level of technical expertise wishing to use PayPal.

However, after learning the nuances of PayPal, I have to say that I am not completely sold. The PayPal service, although offering some excellent tools for web developers and non-developers alike, has quite a concerning "Big Brother" air about it that does not instill confidence in me to trust my money with these people. Reading PayPal for Dummies prompted me to dig a little deeper into the terms and conditions of PayPal as well as seeking out other people's experiences with the service to find some disturbing feedback (try [...] to start with).

Of course a company as large as PayPal is going to be the target of some flack but when we're talking about the potential loss of control over one's personal funds (large amounts in some cases), this brings a whole new level of concern.

All in all, PalPal has the potential to be a great service but, at the moment, has a way to go before it wins my trust.

The reason I bought this book to learn how to add PayPal to my Web-based business, but while reading this book, I discovered that this is a wonderfully comprehensive book on the capabilites of PayPal and what it has to offer.

If you want to go beyond making a payment on eBay by using PayPal, PayPal for Dummies, like most of the "for Dummies" books will get you started and answer basic questions. What I discovered was that I could install some payment buttons on my website for my Web-based business as well as add some donations buttons to any non-profit organization. PayPal For Dummies had all the information I needed and more to achieve various goals and the information was easy to find.

PayPal For Dummies explains how to establish a PayPal account, deposit or withdrawal money from your PayPal account, create multi-user access to your account, accept payments in international currencies, use PayPal to help shipping merchandise, and create a shopping cart with buttons for purchasing merchandise on your website or making charitable donations from your website.

Overall a good reference book for the person trying to know and understand PayPal.

Worthless.

This book is 10 years out of date (published in 2005) and is worthless. Almost none of the screens, buttons, procedures, features, functions, etc. resemble what is offered on the current Paypal website, not to mention the many new Paypal products such as "Paypal Cash", "Paypal Prepaid Debit Card", etc. which didn't even exist 10 years ago.

Great reference

I've had wome one-on-one training on Final Cut Pro but this book helps fill in the gaps. I'm just getting into it but so far it's been a real help.

Very Outdated.

Books are truly only helpful when the software is actually stilling be used by the masses. 90% of the information in this book would be extremely helpful if we could roll the clocks back 6-8 years. Referring to the benefits of SD, referring to the benefits of using Tape, these are all very old school thoughts, that quite frankly have lost a lot of applicability by today's standards. Most folks today are recording to SSD or using SD Cards, this book was written before the advent of such ideas, thus leaving you quite behind and in the dark.

Not particularly helpful or easy to use. Honestly, none of the books on Final Cut Pro are. Final Cut Pro--well, it's just incredibly difficult to learn. They've made it way too complicated.

Great Introduction

I'm an amateur (ham) radio operator who's looking for material to use for classroom courses on radio operation, electronics theory, etc. I bought this book hoping that there would be some ideas, and I was pleasantly surprised.

The Dummies series is pretty much hit-or-miss when it comes to utility, but this book really helped. The chapter on Multimeters (Volt-Ohm Meters, or VOMs) alone was worth the purhase price. I'd purchased another book (Getting the Most from your Multimeter) and was sorely disappointed that, once again, the book assumed the reader had far more basic knowledge than I did.

Is it lacking? Sure. If you're looking for some basic electricity fundamentals, this isn't the book. The "Basic Electricity" book from the Bureau of Naval Personnel (a Dover books reprint) is pretty good on this account, since it's used to teach semi-literate 18-year-old seamen a fundamental skill. The book could also use more detail in some areas but, what the heck--it's a Dummies book.

Compared to the "All New Elctronics Self-Teaching Guide" which I also purchased (much to my chagrin), it's great. The Self-Teaching Guide is simply awful as a beginner's book. Admittedly, the Self-Teaching Guide is a text book and, as such, it's assumption is that the reader has some fundamentals nailed down. The Dummies book, interestingly co-authored by Earl Boysen (a co-author on the Self-Teaching Guide), is really a solid intro to the subject.

Really helpful if you are aprehensive about the SAT

There is a lot of useful information in this book. It gets you into the minds of the people who create these tests which is very useful. The problem that students have with the SAT is that it looks like a regular high school test, but a hard one.

The truth is the it is not a Scholastic Math test or a Scholastic Reading test or a Scholastic English test. It is a Scholastic REASONING test. Completely unlike anything the student has ever taken.

It's much more like the puzzles you used to get with the Sunday Newspaper Magazine. Once a student really gets this, the SAT becomes much less threatening.

This book can get you into a frame of mind that will let you do really well on the SAT. You already know everything you need to know to do well on the test. This book can get you to understand that

The best of a bad bunch!

This book really exceeds what has come to be a disappointing reputation for SAT study guides.
Because the SAT tends to be very complicated and detailed as an exam and so most study guides tend to almost TRY to reflect this in the complex layout of their books. This study guide is different from all the rest, as it has a simple layout, a brief introduction with some oh-so-useful tips for both English and Math sections and then it divides each English section into the 3 sections within it (1 analogies; 1 definitions; 1 sentence completion etc) and the same with the Math.
After each of the 6 sections it has practice questions. Then at the end it has 3 practice SAT papers.
This is great; it's really well laid out and it's concise. There's no complicated language to get past from the author (the SAT's language is difficult enough!) and it's not as bulky and long and off-putting as other SAT guides, which are often more difficult than the exam itself. If you need a top grade, there's no book better than this one.

Best SAT prep ever written

This is a great book that makes studying for the SAT fun. Weused it in Mom's Home SAT Prep Course. 20 days before the test, my11th grader read one chapter per night. After she read each chapter,she had to sit down with me and explain the chapter. We went over eachsample problem and the tips. Each night, it took her about half anhour to read the book and half an hour to explain it to me. She alsotook 2 sample SAT exams from the book. She scored only about 1150 onthe practice SATs in the book but on the real SAT, she scored 1320 --and we attribute a lot of it to the help of SAT for Dummies! The best$... we ever spent. Ideal for kids who have good vocabulary and mathskills and simply need to learn the sneaky tricks of the SAT. And momor dad, after this kind of prep course, even YOU could take the SAT!

A good, good book.

Much less useful than I had hoped - 2.5 stars

This book would be great for the person who has no knowledge whatsoever about digital cameras but wanted to buy one and needed to know what to look for and what to do with it in the first weeks after purchasing it. Alternatively, this book also provides lots of details on what a pro or semi-pro photographer would want in his or her studio for doing portraits or close-up macro shots and editing them with an expensive professional editing program. Since I fit in neither category, I found the book lacking.

I've had a basic point-and-shoot 2mp Canon A20 for almost four years but bought a 5mp Pentax Optio 555 with full manual controls and wanted to learn how to use those controls. Sadly, this book really didn't help me that much. If you already have a digital camera, too much of this book is devoted to how to purchase one and what accessories are useful. I know what a megapixel is - I want to know how to take good, interesting pictures.

Several portions of the book tell you about basic photography, but by and large, I found it too basic. For instance, in the chapter on photographing people, the author states that if you want your subjects to have a good appearance, you should be sure they are wearing nice clothes !!??!! Really? There is some fairly obvious text on how to center or frame subjects, but nothing momentous.

Conversely, at the opposite extreme, the author spends too much time discussing how to set up a portrait studio (page after page on lighting accessories) or a macrophotography studio, for doing close-up photos of inanimate objects (such as for eBay auctions). He goes on for pages telling you about what sort of backing to have behind your subjects - definite overkill.

I bought this book hoping it would tell me how to make best use of the manual, aperture priority and shutter priority settings on my camera. It does tell you that the smaller the f-stop, the larger the aperture. It also tells you that to shoot moving objects, such as sports photography, you need a faster shutter speed to capture the fast moving action. But that's pretty basic and self-evident. I wanted to know how aperture and shutter speed effect depth of field, so that I could take great photos of people or flowers in sharp focus, with the background blurred out of focus to emphasize the subject. Guess what? This three inch thick tome does NOT explain any of that. I spent hours re-reading every possible portion of the book that might provide that information, but although it does mention the concept of depth of field several times, the author does not bother to tell the reader how to make use of it with his or her camera. I find that inexcusable. In fact, the author really does not provide much of use about any aspect of the manual controls on a camera, aside from the aforementioned sports photographer's need for a fast shutter speed and the need for longer exposures in dim light. To the extent that proponents of this book claim I should find this information in general, non-digital photography books, I have to ask why that isn't the case with all of the actual picture-taking chapters in this book.

There is a chapter/book on general use of digital imaging and editing software that is moderately useful. I have been doing ok with several programs (Photosuite, Picture It!) just playing around without reading the instructions and after reading this book, I discovered I was missing out on some useful aspects and features of those programs. However there is also a separate book (one-seventh of this entire reference work) devoted to shamelessly plugging the program Photoshop and how to use it. I don't own the full version of Photoshop and given its six c-note price tag, I'm not ever planning on owning it or even the basic version of the program, Photoshop Elements, which is rarely discounted much under eighty bucks. Perhaps I'm speaking solely out of ignorance of its wonderful benefits, but I neither see why Photoshop is so much better for the average digital photographer who just wants to print nice, interesting pictures nor do I understand why 15% of this book is consumed with telling me about a program I'll never own. I agree with the other non-enthusiastic reviewer that these programs should probably be covered in a separate, more detailed primer focused solely on the program you actually own.

Finally, I found quite a few of the author's photos spread throughout the book lacking in value. Some of them simply did not demonstrate well a particular point the author was trying to make (e.g. the stone gargoyle in the rule of threes subject framing section as well as the castle on a hill photos). Quite a few other photographs that were supposed to show the potential wonders of digital photos were simply not particularly interesting.

I'll conclude with the best advice on digital photography books that anyone can give: plan on spending some reasonable amount of time in an actual bookstore reviewing not just this 7-in-1 Dummies book, but several others too. I wish I had. Look to see if you agree with several of the points I've made or that other reviewers of this book have made. Look to see if there is substantial text in the book that addresses the areas where you have questions or need more information. Read some of it carefully to make sure that it makes sense to you and the author's writing is clear. Then, make up your own mind. Finally, don't hesitate to make some use of the internet, though, because some of the best websites of any sort that I've seen online are the digital photography websites - especially (...) - they really are exceptionally useful reference sources. Last but not least, enjoy your digital camera.

Everything you need in one book!

What a great extension to the Dummies concept! I love Dummies books, but always finished each book wishing there were more information. This "All in One Desk Reference" has that information! It's two or three times the size of a typical Dummies book at 800 or so pages, and it's all meat. Everything you need to know about digital photography and basic image editing is in here.
The emphasis on photography, rather than digital technology, is refreshing. Certainly, there are chapters on how digital cameras operate, and guidelines for choosing a digital camera. But the center of the book has solid chapters on good old fashioned photography, as it applies to digital cameras. There's a chapter on composition, one on close-up photography, another on sports photography, and a great travel photo section. The thick section of color photos are great, too. It's good to see color images in a book about color photography.
The sections on image editing are fairly complete and will get beginners started and more experienced people trying some new things. Both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements are covered, but there is a chapter that evaluates most of the popular image editors and compares and contrasts them. This book really is thorough.
However, if you want to buy this book, purchase it for its great coverage of digital photography. That alone makes this the leading digital photography book. The other chapters make it a useful "All in One" reference book.
