Real help for memory

As a mental health professional I am always looking for practical information and techniques which are accessible and understandable to the average patient. This book provides many accurate and useful facts about memory in an organized and interesting format. It speaks to the concerns of many who would benefit from specific exercises to enhance memory. It also cautions against the all too tempting urge to find a "quick fix," such as inappropriate and/or exclusive reliance on vitamins or suppliments. This book encourages a balanced and effective response to concerns about memory.

A Book to Remember

This was my first "for dummies" book. I've been suffering from some really horrible side effects of a few diagnosed and possibly as-yet undiagnosed conditions that effect my memory. I decided to pick this up for advice in cutting back as much memory funk as I can.

Already it's helped me in so many ways, even despite the fact that I've studied more deeply into the psychology and physiology of memory and the brain and still remember much of those studies.

I discovered I already used several of the strategies listed, naturally, but also a few things that I'm doing that may be making my brain worse in addition to the negative effects from my medical conditions (deficiencies in b12 and vitamin D).

So many things were made simple that I thought were more involved. I now remember to take my vitamin supplements most days thanks to an idea that occurred to me while reading this. It didn't specifically give me that idea, but the suggestions got me thinking about how to troubleshoot my own problem. I realized I don't have trouble remembering to take my pills, my problem is I can't remember if the memory of taking my pills happened today already, or yesterday. Little weekly organizers don't really help me. I created a rhyming mnemonic and a signal to help out, thanks to this book. I turn my pill bottles upside down as a visual signal I have taken them. My rhyme reminds me: Turn pill bottles upside down after taking, right them at night, or after waking.

I've been remembering my supplements without fear of OD for a week now. Now I just need to figure out a way to get my TV-addicted husband to read it ;)

I am no longer a dummy

This is a great book, teaching in typical "for dummies' fashion about a complex topic in simple and vivid language. I consider it both a great stand-alone reference book (if you're going for a basic understanding of how memory functions, how to improve it, and a bit of technical knowledge on the side), as well as fabulous "jumping point" for pursuing a more in-depth study of the topic (starting from scratch to medium-scratch). I have already studied the topic, and still found the book enlightening, practical, and so easy to implement into my life. As a college student needing to remember everything, this has been a very valuable book for me.
