About the Author
David Litchfield specializes in searching for new threats to database systems and web applications and holds the unofficial world record for finding major security flaws. He has lectured to both British and U.S. government security agencies on database security and is a regular speaker at the Blackhat Security Briefings. He is a co-author of The Shellcoder’s Handbook, SQL Server Security, and Special Ops. In his spare time he is the Managing Director of Next Generation Security Software Ltd.

Chris Anley is a co-author of The Shellcoder’s Handbook, a best-selling book about security vulnerability research. He has published whitepapers and security advisories on a number of database systems, including SQL Server, Sybase, MySQL, DB2, and Oracle.

John Heasman is a principal security consultant at NGS Software. He is a prolific security researcher and has published many security advisories relating to high-profile products such as Microsoft Windows, Real Player, Apple Quick-Time, and PostgreSQL.

Bill Grindlay is a senior security consultant and software engineer at NGS Software. He has worked on both the generalized vulnerability scanner Typhon III and the NGSSQuirreL family of database security scanners. He is a co-author of the database administrator’s guide, SQL Server Security.

Next Generation Security Software Ltd is a UK-based company that develops a suite of database server vulnerability assessment tools, the NGSSQuirreL family. Attacking Database Servers

This review is only for the Oracle parts of the book.

The most interesting chapter is "Attacking Oracle". These guys give phrase "thinking outside of the box" the real meaning. They look for a feature or bug open to the security attack, then they shake it til it breaks. You will see exploits of AUTHID, PL/SQL injections, app. server, dbms_sql.parse bug,... most of them relevant to 9i and 10g versions.

The hacks are mainly in the sections called "Real-World Examples". Most of the exploits are already patched by Oracle and they are also available on hacking forums, but there were some new ones that were quite a revelation.

The security recommendations in the "Securing Oracle" chapter were too general, you can probably find Internet white papers on hardening Oracle that give more details. But, this book is not really about hardening Oracle, even if it says "Defending Database Servers" with small, blue letters on the front cover. This book is about attacking database servers.

I have seen David Litchfield's previous work and I am sure he knows (and has tried) more than what is written here. Can we expect to see that in "The Hacker's Handbook" part II?

Incredible! I just hope the good guys read it before the black hats do!

This book is simply amazing. I would have expected a book with a handful of descriptions of exploits against the various databases, followed by some lame generalizations about blocking the holes.

Instead, this book offers detailed information on the various exploits, and detailed information on how to fix the problems.

If you are a DBA of any of the major databases, you NEED to pick up this book sooner rather than later. Now that this book is "on the streets", it's just a question of time before all hell breaks loose :(

You Really Need the 70 Pages on Your Database

Here is a book in which you will probably only be interested in 1/7 of the pages. That means that instead of reading 528 pages you only need to read about 70. But, you may really, really need that 70 pages. The reason for this is that the book covers seven of the most common databases: IBM DB2, Oracle, MySQL, PostGreSQL, SQL Server, SyBase, Informix. These programs are so different that what applies to one does not generally apply to the others.

Each section of the book covers one of the databases. It usually begins with some history of both the database and attacks on it. For instance the Slammer worm compromised more than 75,000 SQL Server databases within ten minutes of its release in January 2003.

After that there is a discussion on the database, its architecture, how it handles things like authentication and so on.

Finally it goes into how to defend the database against attack. This includes information on how to remove unncecessary features and services that might serve as gateways to attacks, and talks about how to use the databases own internal security systems to their maximum effectiveness.

As I said, you really need the 70 or so pages that refer to your own database.

PS - What's the most secure database - PostGreSQL, and it goes into why.

A Diabetic's Best Resource and Companion

The newly diagnosed diabetic often feels as if he or she had been plunked down in front of a circus tent, complete with three rings, sideshows, barkers, and scary clowns, only then to be told "okay, pal, start making choices!"
Many patients flee. Others roam around frightened and vulnerable.
Dr. Rubin, however, clearly, calmly, and intelligently guides the patient in this book through the chaos and confusion of the diabetes care circus. He really makes sense out of what is available. The book is unfailingly clear.
I was also impressed with his anecdotes, drawn from his practice, about the emotional experiences of his patients, and with his tips on how to cope with setbacks, glitches, and successes.
Many books on diabetes lecture the patient. In this book, diabetics will find a physician-author who does not lecture and who is not afraid to evaluate treatments and approaches. He seems intent on helping diabetics, and their families and caregivers, return to wonderful lives.

Great Book

OK. Hubby's just been diagosed with type II diabetes. Go the to library and get a million confusing books. I don't have time for this. No, wait, there's GOT to be a "Dummies" book on this subject. Amazon.com - "Diabetes for Dummies" - BINGO! Aaaahhhh, all the information I need in an easy-to-understand format.
The only problem we found in this this book is that the calculation for body mass index (BMI) was a bit confusing, and some of the websites have changed, but the rest of the book was EXTREMELY helpful and presented in a non-threatening way.
Knowledge is power and banishes fear. This book helped save my sanity.
Also, when I had a question, I sent an e-mail and got a prompt response from Dr. Rubin himself!

Excellent, POSITIVE Book

Easy-to-read and entertaining book that explains not only what diabetes is and how it's treated, but also what you can do to prevent (yes, PREVENT) long-term complications. The message throughout the book is one of hope; you can live with this disease, you can have a full, long, happy life.
Since being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, I have received several "basic" books on the subject, including this one which I purchased for myself. Although I haven't read the other books word-for-word yet, I have browsed through them and they seem to be geared more toward people with type 1. This book, however, addresses types 1 & 2 equally, which I was very grateful for.
If you want to educate yourself about diabetes, this is the book! It's informative, entertaining, easy to read and will remind you page after page that your life is not over -- in fact, it's just beginning!

Real help for memory

As a mental health professional I am always looking for practical information and techniques which are accessible and understandable to the average patient. This book provides many accurate and useful facts about memory in an organized and interesting format. It speaks to the concerns of many who would benefit from specific exercises to enhance memory. It also cautions against the all too tempting urge to find a "quick fix," such as inappropriate and/or exclusive reliance on vitamins or suppliments. This book encourages a balanced and effective response to concerns about memory.

This was my first "for dummies" book. I've been suffering from some really horrible side effects of a few diagnosed and possibly as-yet undiagnosed conditions that effect my memory. I decided to pick this up for advice in cutting back as much memory funk as I can.

Already it's helped me in so many ways, even despite the fact that I've studied more deeply into the psychology and physiology of memory and the brain and still remember much of those studies.

I discovered I already used several of the strategies listed, naturally, but also a few things that I'm doing that may be making my brain worse in addition to the negative effects from my medical conditions (deficiencies in b12 and vitamin D).

So many things were made simple that I thought were more involved. I now remember to take my vitamin supplements most days thanks to an idea that occurred to me while reading this. It didn't specifically give me that idea, but the suggestions got me thinking about how to troubleshoot my own problem. I realized I don't have trouble remembering to take my pills, my problem is I can't remember if the memory of taking my pills happened today already, or yesterday. Little weekly organizers don't really help me. I created a rhyming mnemonic and a signal to help out, thanks to this book. I turn my pill bottles upside down as a visual signal I have taken them. My rhyme reminds me: Turn pill bottles upside down after taking, right them at night, or after waking.

I've been remembering my supplements without fear of OD for a week now. Now I just need to figure out a way to get my TV-addicted husband to read it ;)

I am no longer a dummy

This is a great book, teaching in typical "for dummies' fashion about a complex topic in simple and vivid language. I consider it both a great stand-alone reference book (if you're going for a basic understanding of how memory functions, how to improve it, and a bit of technical knowledge on the side), as well as fabulous "jumping point" for pursuing a more in-depth study of the topic (starting from scratch to medium-scratch). I have already studied the topic, and still found the book enlightening, practical, and so easy to implement into my life. As a college student needing to remember everything, this has been a very valuable book for me.

Breaking Into Acting..

Very informative, well written book. Extremely helpful for the Novice actor, for someone just starting out (Acting classes, extras etc.). Covers everything you need to know to start looking into developing this exciting career. Many topics, easily & clearly set-out. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in the Industry, including well established actors, as it could still help with pin-point information and ideas, that may be not known or forgotten over time. Don't give it a second thought about purchasing this book!

Good Introduction to Acting and an easy read

I've just finished reading the whole book - as I've just finished my 10th movie as an actor - and I found the book to be a great introduction to the world of Acting. I have found it to be accurate, helpful, and an easy read. I was surprised at how often I would read something in the book - which had been exactly as I'd found it on a set.

This book does *not* teach you how to act. That is not the intent. Rather it teaches you about the business of acting - covering film, theatre, extra work, and even things like money and life management as an actor.

Breaking into Acting of Dummies

Outstanding Book all the way around! I was stupid and bought mine at full price ... because I was homeless and living in my car in the hot California sun with nothing better to do than to read this book while waiting for job interviews. Anyway, if you are even considering getting into acting this is a book to build your career off of! Not only does it deal with the behind the scenes stuff that the public never gets to see like headshots and resumes but also deals with the psychology of the acting game and how to deal with the ups and downs of the business.
I can't say enough good things about it! Thanks for the great read and the sun tan!

Special Agent Deputy US Marshall Treasury Enforcement Agent

I checked out both this book and the Learning Express 'Complete Preparation Guidebook to the Treasury Enforcement Agent Exam' and can honestly say that the level of difficulty in the Steinberg book ('Special Agent Deputy US Marshall..) is more in line with the actual exam than the Learning Express book. I only had the better book for 2 days prior and the amount and depth of material it covers regarding the most difficult parts of the test far outweighs that of the Learning Express book, (the math and investigative portions). Also, the Learning Express books sample test questions do not even compare to the actual exam; they are simply far too easy and can give one a false sense of confidence. In some instances, age might make time an issue because one can only take this exam once per year, as in my case (there is an age max for the TEA position of 37 by certification). I used the better book for two days and passed the exam the first time! Don't be fooled; do it right the first time.

Harder than the test itself

This book is great. I took the practice questions and discovered I had a ways to go on the verbal and investigative. I studied for about a week before my test, probably a total of 15 hours. I took the short overview test first then followed that by studying each section---these section descriptions and tips are vital. Then I took the first model exam, graded it and read each solution, then studied the sections again. The second model exam was a much improved score but I again studied the sections and the answer explanations. When I got out of the test I really felt that I aced it. I don't know what I scored but I have received a letter saying I passed. This is a must have for taking the test, the other two people in my testing room did not have it and I think they both struggled.

An absolute MUST for taking the TEA exam.

After having some moderate anxiety about taking the exam, this is the book I have to recommend to actually pass the exam. I just found out last week that I passed the test, and received my second set of paperwork to complete for background check, federal employment application, etc. If it wasn't for this particular book over the other one I purchased, I probably would have had a greater amount of test anxiety. My application process is with the IRS Criminal Investigation division, and it unfortunately does not prepare you for the accounting assessment portion of the test, but as per the job requirements, if you've had three years or more of responsible accounting experience, and perhaps a few hours of high school or college accounting that you can refer back to prior to the exam, then that particular part should not pose any challenges whatsoever. Now I have to praise this book for several reasons including a section to train you how to think and get your mind going in full gear for the concentration necessary for exam day. In concurrence with the other reviews, this is the book to get especially for the arithmetic reasoning. Even though my major in college was mathematics, the section of the book addressing arithmetic reasoning was helpful, because even math pros can easily forget the fundamentals. The problems for investigation section was just like the test, and so was the verbal reasoning. However, for those taking the test and with respect to the verbal reasoning section, watch the quantifiers like NOT. The verbal reasoning is the most difficult, because of time limitations, so my advice is to read carefully, test yourself with both practice exams prior to the exam, and the rest should be a walk in the park. At this point in the application process, I'm now going to purchase "Guide to Careers in Federal Law Enforcement (Ackerman)" for more in depth information on having an edge in the interview process.

The Best "C" Book, Period.

If you need to learn the C language, there is no better book than the "C All-In-One Desk Reference". The book is FUN to read, and gently (and effectively) takes you from the simplest of C concepts like variables, conditional statements and loops, through pointers, references, and arrays, to advanced topics like double-linked lists. The book is OK as a reference, but it EXCELS at presenting the C language to the new programmer. No other technical book in my personal library has helped me (and my career) as much as this one.

With 43 square miles of entertainment to explore (an area twice the size of Manhattan), that means you need to choose, in advance, what you want to do. That's where the Unofficial Guide comes in. It describes the many Epcot, Disney-MGM Studios, and Magic Kingdom options, with candid reviews that don't just parrot Disney promotions, and it helps you construct a plan so that the overwhelming extravaganza of Disney World doesn't turn you into a Disney caricature of fear, knees-a-knockin' and sweat-a-streamin'. Excellent reference, take it with a grain of salt

This is a great book, we used it for our two recent trips to Disney and most of what was written turned out to be true. Now we are planning another trip in 2000 with our 1 year old and friends and their kids, and we're sending them a copy of this book (they've never been). We've been reading the section about traveling with kids and know now already which attractions to avoid and which ones to head to; based on honest advice that you won't find in any "official" guide.
However, you do have to keep in mind that this is someone's opinion and not necessarily fact (but it is the opinion of someone who has traveled to Disney World far more times than the average American). They print actual reader comments, usually pitting contrasting comments side by side, as a reminder that their advice is just that, advice and not fact. We went to a few attractions despite the written reviews, i.e. Alien Encounter, and found the reviews to be accurate insofar as the experience, however, our opinion of how good or not-so-good the attraction was differed from what was written.
A good reference, highly recommended.

Great book, but zero stars on the kindle edition

I've bought several editions of this book over the years and it's really the best guidebook for Disney that there is. It's huge and covers everything you could imagine wanting to know. It's also witty and interesting and filled with tidbits of information that you didn't even think you needed to know.

I had a 2010 edition and just wanted to check out some changes, so I downloaded the less-expensive Kindle edition for 2012. When I went to search for the specific information, I found the book had not been indexed. That means it's not searchable. For a book this size and for this type of content, it makes it practically unusable.

If you want a read through and plan to make a lot of notes, I suppose the kindle edition could be a good choice. But, if at this point, you wanted to look for specific information, then I don't think it's a good choice at all on the Kindle. The hardcopy would be a better choice. I realize there's a table of contents that was partially searchable but even the TOC was not entirely functional. I did NOT check the index prior to returning the kindle edition but that wouldn't have necessarily filled my needs either since it's easier to search in the Kindle than it is to use the index (imo).

I still recommend this book, just not the Kindle edition.

Boy, Was This A Major Update!!

When Len Testa said that there were to be major updates in what many of us consider to be the best guide (official or unofficial), that turned out to be an understatement. About the Author
Rex Miller was a Professor of Industrial Technology at The State University of New York, College at Buffalo, for more than 35 years. He has taught on the technical school, high school, and college level for more than 40 years. He is the author or coauthor of more than 100 textbooks ranging from electronics to carpentry and sheet metal work. He has contributed to more than 50 magazine articles over the years for technical publications. He is also the author of seven Civil War regimental histories.

Mark Richard Miller finished his B.S. degree in New York and moved on to Ball State University, where he obtained his master’s and went to work in San Antonio. He taught in high school and went to graduate school in College Station, Texas, finishing the doctorate. He took a position at Texas A&M University in Kingsville, Texas, where he now teaches in the Industrial Technology Department as a Professor and Department Chairman. He has coauthored seven books and contributed many articles to technical magazines. His hobbies include refinishing a 1970 Plymouth Super Bird and a 1971 Roadrunner.

Joseph P. Almond, Sr., is a professional plumber in the trades and a long-time member of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada.

Somewhat dated, needs significant revision

This book is a pocket manual, as such, is by no means the definitive work on plumbing. It is now in its 10th edition and many of the photos in the book appear significantly dated. So, too, some of the plumbing methods also appear dated, i.e., the use of lead piping (no longer allowed in many jurisdictions); the use of cast iron sewer pipes sealed with oakum and melted lead (again, this has been supplanted by plastic and/or metal piping in many jurisdictions) are particularly anachronistic. While a good primer in a limited way, it is by no means a resource for someone preparing for an exam or looking to ensure plumbing work is in compliance with the code. There are other, more recent books that serve this purpose. This is a book that appears to have been written in the 1930s and only periodically updated as required. It needs a complete re-write to bring it to currency and relevance with modern building codes.

A really Plumbers Pocket Manual

I have read it fully and I have noticed that some aspects of the plumbing trade not well explained in other books are here very well explained. I considered this pocket manual a must have for every plumber and for serious students of the plumbing trade. I very trully recommends this pocket manual for everyone. It is a small book that you can carry everywhere you go, spcially while sitting in an office waiting your turn, that is where I have read it more. I have read it twice and stil carry it with me every place I go.

Years ago I used Audels book on siding and was so pleased with it , I just knew this would be good. They put things in terms that are easily understood and the graphics really help me visualize what it is they are explaining.

A must-have for every kitchen!

I have always had a Betty Crocker cookbook around. It was the first cookbook I took with me when I moved away from home, and it still remains the first book I grab for if I have *any* questions about a recipe I'm making.
The book is great for cooks of all levels. It has a lot of great introductory information - how do you boil an egg? What are the different cuts of meat? It provides a lot of easy recipes that taste delicious and are nutritious as well.
In addition, the book also eases you into many advanced recipes. Looking to cook a Thanksgiving dinner for the relatives? Trying to make a birthday dinner really special? This cookbook has the recipes for you, all easy to understand and with gorgeous photos.
This version is definitely an improvement on previous versions as well. There is information on grilling and vegetarian meals, something lacking in the last versions. They've also added in a number of ethnic dishes that are quite tasty.
If this book isn't on your kitchen shelf, be sure to buy a copy!

You will be pleasantly surprised

You will be pleasantly surprised by this book. This book has a lot of information that goes along with the recipes. You will be amazed at all of the supplimental information that goes into this book. The way to buy fresh vegetables, how to look for good cuts of meat, ways to stretch meat, and a host of ideas with each recipe. The book is clearly written, and it makes it very easy to read. There are pictures for many recipes as well, this pictures aren't of just the finished product either. I think you will find this book covers the basics, and goes well beyond that. If you know someone that is just starting out, or perhaps learning to cook this would be a great choice for them.

Not An Authentic Reproduction

I have several copies of the original Betty Crocker's Cookbook for Boys and Girls and have found deletions of some of the old recipes in the new reproduction. There is no Easy Orange Cake and Clear Orange Sauce in the new. I noted several other changes too! On p.62 in the old is the recipe for Chocolate Fudge Milk Shake and in the new is Cake and Frosting Mix.
I was very excited about hearing that they were going to reprint this recipe book as my original copy was completely falling apart. I had bought several on an auction site to hand down to my kids that were not in good shape. I was going to buy the new one until I went through it and found that it is a revised reproduction and not a genuine reproduction. I would have liked them to have revised it by giving the exact old recipes and writing what changes were to be made if items were no longer available.
