Horrible book if you are traveling in a French speaking country.
By Foz-man
I was recently in France and had Rick Steve's French phrase book, a companion had this phrase book, and let me tell you that this book was all but useless.

It seems like it was written for by a middle school french teacher, who is more interested in making you learn how to conjucate verbs than be able to say phrases that are most needed for travelers.

There is no "quick list" of phrases, and when trying to find out how to ask "Where is the bathroom" you have to go through the whole book until you find the phrase on pg. 72! It makes no sense to use this book while traveling, that's my opionon based on 2 weeks in France with this book.

Extremely Helpful for Everyday Chores
By Gadgester
Initially I was confused over how this book would be different from "Small Business for Dummies." Now I think I know. This book focuses on the everyday chores of starting, funding and running a small business, and gives you lots of legal forms which you can use in order to save money on attorney fees. I find the forms on the CD-ROM extremely useful and helpful.
The book does NOT talk about business ideas or marketing. It approaches the small business from a legal standpoint. For example, how do you talk to venture capitalists? How do you give employees stock options (incredible info in the book!)? How do you deal with employee discontent? How to protect your business legally? How to write a contract? And so on.
If you need to know how to get a small biz idea or how to sell your products/services, this book is not for you. But, once you get your idea off the ground, you ABSOLUTELY NEED this book to survive -- unless you've got lots of cash to afford a good attorney. This book is no substtitute for a lawyer in many situations, but I have been able to use the forms in the book and on the accompanying CD-ROM to save my company thousands of dollars. I think this is a must-have reference for every small business owner.
I wish IDG would put out an updated edition soon.

Good, but slowly being replaced by online resources
By Manny Hernandez
This a good book, don't get me wrong. However, having been edited back in 1998, and being -as it is- largely focused on the documents that you, as a Small Business Owner, are likely to be in need of, it now seems a bit outdated and old-fashioned when you compare if with the ease with which you can get (for free) similar formats (business plans, marketing plans, invoices, etc.) online (in office.microsoft.com > Templates, for instance). It is a good reference of what to look for, though, which is why I give it 4 stars.

Great for those starting their business
By Dan Mentzer
It's great to see a book written by an attorney who also understands business.
Too many other books out there are written by amateur business people who's real business is in promoting and selling lousy books.
The CD-Rom will save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars and time.
Also recommend "The Small Business Kit" and "How to Incorporate in any State" by J.W. Dicks, another attorney and businessman with real world knowledge.
Good luck with your business!

Don't waste your money on this book!
By J. Forcum
Don't waste your money on this book! I have a few of the "...for Dummies" books, and this is not only the worst in the series, but is the worst history book I have ever read. Although the author throws out hundred of 'place names' in the text (e.g. Leinster, etc) there is not a single map in the book to tell you where he is talking about! Many of his such 'place name' are archaic, thus they do NOT appear on a modern map of Ireland and have to be looked up separately using Google! His narrative is very hard to follow, and jumps all over the place. He does not use commonly known terminology. For example, when his talked about King Richard (of England), the author does not identify him as THE Richard the Lionhearted. He could have made it easier to follow by adding a timeline chart listing Irish rulers, and English rulers, BUT HE DID NOT DO THIS. He just makes you try to figure out the who and when. I did finish the book because I started it...but it was a waste of my time!

Informative Intro to Irish History
By BooksBooksBooks101
If you're looking for a conversational and interesting introduction to Irish history, look no further. If you want a dense text book, this isn't it. Instead I found it to be a great entry point into Irish history. I've since dug a bit deeper with additional books on key topics, but would never have done so without getting my feet wet with the Dummies. (I've also recently purchased British History for Dummies; another a good introdcution.)

Ghastly mash up of anecdotal history
By Meg Sumner
This was a subtext used in an anthropology class, and it is incredibly useless. There is no cohesive theme or element in the text: it jumps around in a flippant, jokey, childish tone (even cartoons) that minimizes the importance and relevance of what should be socially urgent information.

Time periods jumble around, the jargon is dumbed down to elementary school level, and too much attention is paid to small events rather than the pattern of the whole history.

Additionally, something is said by what is left out: only one obscure reference to the IRA? No discussion of "official" vs. "provisional" IRA? Minimal info on Ian Paisley, Michael Collins, the abstention policy, and the Ballymurphy Riots?

Incredibly disappointing and potentially dangerous...

This should be the first book you should read !
By A Customer
I was looking at several aromatherapy books before actually buying one. I must have looked at dozens of books..Being a beginner, this was by far the most entertaining and educational book out there on aromatherapy! Many books are very informative, but not a particularly interesting read. In this case, the humour and easy going manner of the book makes you want to read on and on. The chapters are well organized, and there is even a symptom & oil directory. If you are just beginning, this is the book to start your aromatherapy collection!!!!

So much to learn about aromatherapy and its benefits
By LAUNA STOUT- Children'sBooks.BellaOnline
Wonderful training! Any needed supplies listed were easy to find and I felt that the instructions were adequate for the learning the training opportunities. New techniques in alternative medicine may be just the avenue you would like to learn; test and review for the future possibilities of how they could ultimately impact the health of others. These techniques once learned may help people feel better, or may help with diagnosis. I truly wanted to try out everything in the book! For many these techniques become enjoyable and relaxing…. With this book I was able to make many people happy - including myself- because I like to help people and that makes me feel good if I can make someone better or help them to understand their issues and challenges and how they can be helped or aided in diagnosis or recovery.

but still slightly annoying. Overall
By EightInTheNest
There are several grammatical/spelling errors in this book. It's not a HUGE deal, because you can get the idea of whatever part you are reading, but still slightly annoying.

Overall, I am impressed with the contents and found it very helpful!

This is not what I was looking for.
By bemydemon
I was looking for a "dummies" book on options trading (puts, calls, volatility, etc.) so I ordered it. What I got was a comprehensive review of the ramifications of owning stock options issued by the company that employs you. In short, I felt like a dummy for not researching further before purchase. Don't make the same mistake I did. There is a silver lining, though. I promptly repackaged the book in the shipping box that I received it in and sold it through Amazon, recouping almost all of my original cost. If you have any books you don't need or want, I wholeheartedly endorse Amazon's used book marketplace. I gave it 5 stars because of this experience, and the fact that it is another top-notch example from the excellent Dummies series, just not what I was looking for. Incidentally, if you're looking for what I was looking for originally, you can't go wrong with anything Larry McMillan has written.

Every option-holder should read this book!
By A Customer
By far, the best, most thorough, and most honest book on stock options I've ever read. Even though other books (such as Pastore and Thomas) cover taxes on stock options in more detail, the author definitely provides more than enough information, including considerations I've never seen elsewhere - ordinary income tax and AMT implications of working in multiple states, for example. And he covers the dreaded AMT trap of ISOs with detailed scenarios, better and easier to understand than I've seen anywhere else. But by far, this book's greatest value is in the author's no-holds-barred discussion of - as he puts it in one of the chapter headings - the good, the bad, and the ugly of stock options, including an entire chapter on stock option agreements and what to watch for. Like most Dummies books, there is humor and sarcasm, but the author doesn't overdo it; it just makes the book extremely readable. Even those who have had stock options in the past - whether or not they made money or not - will find value in the author's fresh perspective and post-crash look at just about everything about options.

About the Author
Karli Watson is the technical director of 3form (www.3form.net), as well as a freelance IT specialist, author, developer, and consultant. For the most part, he immerses himself in .NET (in particular C#) and has written numerous books in the field for several publishers. He specializes in communicating complex ideas in a way that is accessible to anyone with a passion to learn, and spends much of his time playing with new technology to find new things to teach people about.
During those (seemingly few) times where he isn’t doing the above, Karli will probably be wishing he was hurtling down a mountain on a snowboard. Or possibly trying to get his novel published. Either way, you’ll know him by his brightly colored clothes.

Christian Nagel is a software architect, trainer, and consultant, and an associate of Thinktecture, offering training and coaching based on Microsoft .NET technologies. His achievements in the developer community have earned him a position as Microsoft Regional Director and MVP for Visual C#. He enjoys an excellent reputation as an author of several .NET books, such as Professional C#, Pro .NET Network Programming and C# Web Services, and he speaks regularly at international industry conferences.
Christian looks back on more than 15 years of experience as a developer and software architect. He started his computing career on PDP 11 and VAX/VMS, covering a variety of languages and platforms. Since 2000 he has been working with .NET and C#, developing and architecting distributed solutions.

Jacob Hammer Pedersen is a systems developer at Fujitsu Service, Denmark. He’s been programming the PC since the early 90s using languages such as Pascal, Visual Basic, C/C++, and in later years C#. Jacob is an MCSD who works almost exclusively on the Microsoft platform where his expertise includes .NET, COM, COM+/Enterprise Services, SQL Server, and MS Office development. A Danish citizen, he works and lives in Aarhus, Denmark.

Jon D. Reid is the President and Chief Technology Officer for Savitar Corporation, an independent software vendor and consulting company that develops database tools for the Microsoft.NET environment. He has co-authored many .NET books, including Pro Visual Studio .NET, Fast Track to C# Programming, ADO.NET Programmer’s Reference, and Professional SQL Server 2000 XML. Jon would like to thank his family, co-authors, and the team at Wrox for their support and encouragement.

Morgan Skinner began his computing career at a tender age on a Sinclair ZX80 at school, where he was underwhelmed by some code a teacher had written and so began programming in assembly language. After getting hooked on Z80 (which he believes is far better than those paltry 3 registers on the 6502), he graduated through the school’s ZX81s to his own ZX Spectrum.
Since then he’s used all sorts of languages and platforms, including VAX Macro Assembler, Pascal, Modula2, Smalltalk, X86 assembly language, PowerBuilder, C/C++, VB, and currently C#. He’s been programming in .NET since the PDC release in 2000, and liked it so much, he joined Microsoft in 2001. He now works in Premier Support for Developers and spends most of his time assisting customers with C#. You can reach Morgan at http://www.morganskinner.com.

Eric White is an independent software consultant with over 20 years experience in building management information systems and accounting systems. When he isn’t hunched over a screen programming in C#, he will most likely be found with an ice axe in hand, climbing some mountain.

Tired of getting games for examples in programming texts
By DRBookLover
I am reading Beginning Visual C# 2005. I have read many books in class and independently, on computer programming languages and topics. I would like to strongly suggest/request that authors use real world business examples in their Examples and practice questions. I do not do any programming with Animals or decks of cards, such as they use in this book. It is very hard to understand a concept without a real-world application. Give me a business problem with sales or accounting and I can get it. This is a good book except this, which is a HUGE problem.

Covers Not Only C# but Also .NET
By John Matlock
This is a beginning, or perhaps intermediate level book on Microsoft's C# (C-Sharp) programming language used with the Microsoft .NET framework. It covers both the C# language and .NET at a beginner level. It is intended to be usable to everyone from people who have never programmed before to C++ programmers who want to learn the differences Microsoft has put into C#, and as an introduction to the .NET library of code.

As a beginning book, the examples can be programmed using the simpler (and FREE) 'Express' versions of both C# and Visual Studio. The book begins with a discussion of Visual Studio and how to use it. From there it goes on to a very simple console application that simply writes one line of text to the screen. And as you might guess, by the end of the 778 page book, the programs have gotten somewhat more complex.

This kind of programming book covers almost exactly the same material of other beginning books on C#. I find that I like the tone, the style of writing, and the completeness of this book better than a lot of others.

The book is great for those who have a base knowledge of c# programming but also want to improove their skills. Although it says beginning C# 2005, this book is not for those who want to write their first program.
In covers all basic needs of a junior programmer in order to allow him to experiment and create new programs.

Takes Work to Use Example Code
By Always Having 2 Learn Stuff
This book has lots of code snippets, but so many of them are out of context of actual usage (within class and standard modules) that the beginner is really left to READING about things rather than trying them. This is a mistake on the part of the Dummy editors. The authors need to give the beginning Dummy the ability to play with the code. It does no good to explain controls and then not provide the code to create the form or even provide the form for the reader to play with and practice. There are some sample files included, but they are far from useful and don't even follow the book. For example, the Chapter 6 Sales Tax form isn't included. I'd look for a book that gave you more examples for practice. Failing that, it's not a BAD book; it may take another book or two used along with this book which really defeats the concept of a Dummy book. Dummys need practice, not reading material.

Good Quick Way to Start Learning VBA
By John Matlock
Some years ago Microsoft created a specialized programming language to allow extensions to be made to the normal modes of operation allowed in their Office suite. The language was fairly well thought out to be applicable to applications as different as word processing, spreadsheets or data bases. They called it Visual Basic for Applications shortened to VBA. It has worked remarkable well. Down theough the years there have been relatively few changes to VBA.

This book is on VBA as specifically oriented to the Microsoft Access database program. But if you learn Access VBA, you are not far from knowing how to use VBA on any of the other Office components. ==While this is an Access book, it is specifically on VBA, it assumes that you already know about how to build a table, and about rows and columns. It also assumes that you have some familiarty with other Access features such as building queries.

Access goes to a great deal of effort to avoid having to use the underlying SQL language. There are a couple of chapters on SQL for the total beginner. In the long run, you will probably want to know more.

You can't design one book to do everything in about 400 pages. This "dummies" book concentrates on VBA. That's enough for one book. It does a good job on VBA. You may want to fill out your bookshelf with Access for Dummies and SQL for Dummies.

Good overall, though not perfect.
By Ryan Hagglund
"Access VBA Programming for Dummies" definitely helped me in breaking into the world of Access VBA programming. The first half is especially good at explaning things in such a way that most anyone with a basic level of understanding of Access could benefit. I did run into some problems with some of the code which I used as templates for my database project, however. The solution I found suggested that the book should be using the '&' sign for combinations rather than the '+' sign, which appears to cause problems in some situations. Thus, it seems to have some mistakes in it.

Great Web development book for the beginner and intermidiate user
By Assaf Leibovitch
Hi,

I work as an ISP development staff member and from time to time write monitoring tools for our support team.

I wanted to start learning php in order to add some web interfaces to our tools.

I have found this book a very good book for the php/mysql beginner like me, great for the fact that it deals also with the installation part and even gives you all the php modules/commands you can use.

the interaction with mysql is also great from the begining and you start develop your skills using these 2 great tools.

one thing I would like to see is interaction with the system, with the exec commands for example.

beside that, this book is great.

Excellent Book
By Amazon Customer
In the first few pages of this book, the new user of PHP, Apache, MySQL for web development gets a fast track into getting a server up and running fast, took me about 30 minutes. The remainder of the book is an excellent reference, with step by step howtos. This book brings the difficulty of getting a webserver running down to a level that brings success.

Great Book for the Time -- Needs Revisions and Updates
By Joel E. Bousley
I would truly love to give this book 5 stars; however, as some of the more recent commentators have indicated, it's out of date. Unfortunately, that's a show stopper when you're using the most recent version of MySQL! I was going over this book as a refresher course, since I have been generally well satisfied with Wrox's books, but the outdated syntax in the MySQL sections are real deal-killers. It's been years since I touched PHP, so I figured I could pick this up and get back into the groove of things and truly get into MySQL at the same time -- no dice on that one.

In short, this book is largely handicapped by two things:

1. It needs to be revamped for the latest version of MySQL and PHP (6 is right around the corner), and
2. The errata section on the website needs to point some of these things out.

I'm giving it four-out-of-five stars because it would have been a righteous book in 2005.
