A Helpful Guide

This book is for a non-writer who needs to write advertising or marketing for his company.

The material is comprehensive and includes many good tips. A couple things to note--

1. The focus is on style and construction of materials (e.g., how to put together a direct mail piece), not on grammar, style, and construction of words.

2. Most of the book covers B2C marketing, not B2B.

All the advice is tried-and-true. If you follow it, you can't go wrong.

A Little Humor, Some Welcome Clarity

This book is a great addition to my library of reference books. I give it four stars only because I was hoping for a lengthier treatment of tips for freelancers. As a reference, it is amazingly useful because it offers clarity--the concrete steps for getting the job done (none of this good juju/bad juju fluff that circulates as marcom advice). Kranz also brings a welcome dose of humor and helpful cautions drawn from long years of experience. For the marketing professional working within a business, it will provide steady and sensible direction, and for those of us who are free agents, it brings a refresher of our clients' needs as well as a solid set of guidelines for marketing our own services.

Wow, I'm impressed

Being 44 and going back to school I was pretty nervous about writing research papers. This book helped me greatly, and what was most surprising is how readable it is. Instead of very dry prose, I found it to be informative and entertaining.
It helped me greatly and my first grade on my Masters level research paper was 99%.
I would recommend it to all new students and if I ever reach my goal of becoming an adjunct professor I am definitely going to recommend it to my students.

Research Papers for Dummies could easily be called "Recipes for Research" because the same process is followed in every research production. You really can't find a simpler guide on the market that does justice to the important business of writing effective and intelligible research papers.

Of course finding the answers in short order is sometimes the key problem and I've found The Practical Pundit to be a quick solution to gathering my material prior to sitting down to order and write.

BRUCE WALKER is adjunct professor of literature and technical writing at the University of Detroit Mercy in Detroit, MI. He earned a B.A. in English from Michigan State University in 1985. He was a contributing editor to Gale Group's Literary Criticism Series from 1985-2000, an editor and publisher of Detroit Athletic Club magazine, DAC News, from 1992-96, and edited Ford Motor Company's Customer Relationship Management Web sites for J. Walter Thompson Advertising in Detroit.

JENNIFER A. HOROWITZ is a graduate of Columbia University with a degree in education of the gifted from Teachers College and in writing from Barnard College. She has worked in New York City schools, with educational publishers and authors, and as an advisor to parents of gifted children.

For New Graduates

This book had some good ideas and resources, but is really for new graduates. I have been an educator for 20 years, so many of the suggestions were not appropriate for those with my level of expertise. I would recommend it only for those thinking they may not want to be in a classroom setting or for those who may not be able to find a job.

I didn't notice this was published in 2005. Although it does contain some good information, it is pretty outdated. Most contact info is for postal mail. Probably the most important thing I learned was to check publication dates for reference books like this.

Important Eclipse features are explained , in plain language. First time I see text where someone said in plain English what is JAR, Plug In and so on further.

An Eclipse book for the application programmer.

I bought this book because it's purpose is to teach the use of Eclipse for the sake of using Eclipse. That is as opposed to using Eclipse to enhance Eclipse, ie, writing plugins. It did an admirable job of achieving that purpose. The writing style is relaxed and intended to be conversational.

Eclipse for Dummies is about 335 pages in length. The book has four major sections, each section containing one or more chapters for a grand total of 18 chapters. Section 1 is the basic introduction to Eclipse and covers installing and understanding the conceptual design of Eclipse. There is a good discussion of perspectives, views, and the difference of the two. Java programming examples are presented at each step and I would stronly encourage the reader to replicate the examples themselves. If you skip the implementing the examples, your going to get a lot less from the book. This goes for entirety of the book. Section 2 comprising chapters 6-12, goes into greater depth in discussing the features of the Eclipse programming environment. This is where the tricks of the trade are focused on, for example, using the Java editor, code assist, documentation,and formatting helps. Refactoring is heavily discussed as it probably should be. Section 3 comprising chapters 13-16 discusses working with projects, running the code, and debugging. Now personally, I would have thought that should have been up front, however, given the number of programming examples laced throughout the earlier chapters the reader is kind of already given a good introduction to creating and maintaining multiple source files and packages within a project. Section 4 is just a little add-on kind of thing which discusses the ten most FAQs and suggestions for what plugins you might want to add.

I gave the book four stars, but really I would have given it a 3.75. I looked around a lot for Eclipse tutorial books, but found that they moved too fast, assummed too much on the part of the reader, and apparently assumed the reader wanted to join the Eclipse team. Eclipse for Dummies was the best book I have found so far for the typical programmer who wants to use Eclipse for the sake of creating applications.

A Textbook, with a tinge of humour

If you want to learn about geometry, but don't want to look through a thick, school like textbook, this is the perfect book!
For every theorem or postulate this book teaches about, right next to it is a short explanation along with a simple diagram used as an example.
This book goes from simple geometry, all the way into a bit of trigonometry.
It is basically like a textbook, but with lots of humour and simple explanations that separates it from the rest of the other geometry books. This book probably covers everything that is taught in 10th Grade, but without all the exercises.
It teaches and explains geometry, but if you are looking for a book full of exercises, this is not the book for you. It should give us more problems or equations to solve, and that is why it lacks 5-stars. That is its only downfall. If you are reading this before you get into geometry, be prepared to know all the material and be bored to death. This is not exactly a bad thing though :) .

Not bad, not great

This book offers a pretty good overview of the subject, and is basically well-written and easy to read, except there are numerous typos, especially in the proofs, which sometimes makes them hard to follow (and hard to trust). She also offers numerous theorems and postulates, followed by a "Translation" into supposed normal English, but frequently her translation is no improvement over the original. So as long as you keep your eyes open for catching her occasional mistakes, it's an OK book.

Great Price for a Great Reference

I love this series of books as a supplemental math reference. I have the following: CliffsQuickReview Trigonometry, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and Calculus I and each one has been a definite lifesaver! Easy to follow and understand, provides practice problems that also show you step by step instruction, and has tips and tricks to help you learn. I would definitely recommend these to all that ask.

Best way to see San Fran...

My wife and I picked this book thinking it would be a good way to see the city. It was not... it was the BEST. We saw so much of San Francisco thanks to this book. We had 8 days to spend there and managed to do 9 of the 11 walks. We went everywhere and saw so much from Haight Ashbury to Golden Gate Park to Nob Hill, the SoMa district... EVERYWHERE. It was great because we could go at our own pace, and not be rushed like a tourist group. We met lots of friendly, helpful people, too.
Whenever we make a return trip this book will come with us again.
Next we are off to Chicago and are armed with that city's version of memorable walks.
Make sure you are in good shape to do these walks, though!

Excellent fact filled guide, with 12 walking tours to choose from

A woman that loves travel and good food writes this review. We picked up this book to get a feel for San Francisco before a business trip where I would be accompanying my husband and didn't want to be bored.

I have the following comments about the book:

PROS:
1. Small size, packed well
2. Maps of the tours were very useful
3. Nice level of detail regarding the items of interest on the tours
4. With 12 outlined tours there was something for everyone
5. The Golden Gate Park information was extremely useful
6. Included information about ethnic food markets that were very interesting and not something you are likely to find on your own

CONS:
1. The Guided Walking tours section seemed like an afterthought.

Overall, the book was very useful if you are the type of person that likes to explore cities by foot (which I am). There is enough detail in this book that I imagine the authors have included facts that many of the locals do not know. I highly recommend this book to those that love to jump into a city and experience everything.

Always good, never great

This is a good set of walks, all well documented in a concise way and with a good mix of history and local color. It's also a convenient size for carrying. All this makes it a good choice for both tourists who want to do a lot of walking and for locals who want to know and experience more of their city. This guide takes a good shot at being all things to all walkers and it comes about as close as a single, compact guide could.
For tourists who are looking for a single good walk through town, the Barbary Coast Trail Official Guide may be a more entertaining choice (especially in its audio version, see my review) while locals will get more out of both Stairway Walks in San Francisco and Historic Walks in San Francisco: 18 Trails Through the City's Past which, to be fair, are larger and more expensive guides. You can't go wrong with this book, but, if you have some specific things you're looking for out of your walking time in San Francisco, you may be able to do better.

If you are looking for techniques, look elsewhere

A good book for people with very little sexual experience or knowledge. If you are looking for a hands-on guide for techniques to practice on your partner, then this is NOT the book you want to get.

Sex for Dummies (for Dummies)

As a medical doctor specializing in adolescent and adult Psychiatry, I have found Dr Ruth's book extremely valuable as a non-threatening resource. Having met with her in May 2001 in New Orleans at the Annual American Psychiatric Association's meeting May 5-10th, I was amazed at her insights about Human Sexuality. Masters and Johnson brought to the Field of Medicine the Physiology of Sexuality, but Dr Ruth carries it to the next level of important knowledge re: Human Intimacy. It is not a "how to" book with the misguided concepts of the Hugh Hefner "Sex is a Triumph of Mechanical Engineering". Instead, she is down to earth, practical, and non-threatening...so that her readers learn and enjoy the basic realities that human sexuality need not be a "competitive sport" nor do couples need to adhere to their culteral expectations of the "Myth of the Mutual Orgasm"....I have had so many individuals and couples leave my office...seeing the book on my bookself...and perhaps at first laughing, only to purchase the book and devour it in the privacy of their own home. I have found it a valuable springboard in working with individuals and couples with sexual dysfunction. As for the person - Dr Ruth - she is delighful, empathic, great sense of humor, and is extremely well informed with the current scientific knowledge of Human Sexuality David L Bransford MD

Not a "how to" book, but a "what is" book

If you want a book which teaches you techniques and offers constructive suggestions on how to improve (or, I suppose, get started) in your sex life, you'll want to skip this one. Go grab a copy of the Kama Sutra or Joy of Sex for this kind of reference.
On the other hand, if you're a complete newbie to sex and/or would rather focus on the technical aspects such as diseases, pregnancy, and topics of a similar nature, this might be a good book for you. There's probably nothing here that you won't find on any free web site or even in the Johns Hopkins Family Health Book (which, for twice the price, you get everything under the sun instead of focusing only on sex-related topics).
So save yourself some time and money and avoid this book altogether.
