Yann “Bunkermaster” Le Scouarnec is the senior developer for Jolt Online Gaming, a British gaming company. He is a moderator at PHPBuilder.com and a developer of open source PHP software for the gaming community. He has also worked for major software corporations as a software quality expert.

Elizabeth Naramore has been programming with computers since a very young age, and, yes, she remembers when software was packaged on cassette tapes. Graduating from Miami University at age 20 with a degree in Organizational Behavior, she found a world of opportunity awaiting her—in corporate marketing. Her first love was always computers, however, and she found herself sucked back to the programming world in 1997 through Web site design and development (once a computer geek, always a computer geek). While she plans to return to Miami to get her Masters in Computer Science, she currently stays busy running several Web sites. Her main focus is in e-commerce and running www.giftsforengineers.com.
Elizabeth has spent the past six years developing Web sites and coordinating all phases of Web site publication and production. She is currently a moderator at PHPBuilder.com, an online help center for PHP. Her other interests include poetry, arts and crafts, camping, and juggling the many demands of career, family, and the “other duties as assigned” that come along in life. She lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, with her husband, beautiful daughter, and a new baby on the way.

Gary “trooper” Mailer. After graduation from university in 1998, Gary worked in a major software house in central London as a quality assurance engineer, and also as the departmental Web developer (using ASP). This gave him a taste of Web development. After a few years, he made the jump into full-time Web development and has not looked back since.
Gary has worked in a few different sectors, including communications (Siemens) and hotels (Hilton), as well as in “traditional” development houses.

Very useful!

I have lots of computer books and I find this one to be extremely helpful. I've used information in this book to help with my home Internet business already! It is very user friendly and full of useful information. Most computer books are hard to use and I spend a lot of time flipping through pages and reading information I don't need just to find what I'm looking for. This book wasn't like that at all!!!
I really liked the chapter on sessions too!

Great beginners book

I think the people that criticize this book don't see the forest from the trees. Yes, there are typos, but this book goes into many of the things I was looking for in getting my ecommerce site going. I think a little more of an introduction/explanation of the basic concepts of html objects would be nice. That said, I have used many of the code examples in my site and am pleased with the results. I had an idea of the functionality I wanted on the site and every time I went to the book to find an example, it was there. Initially I was wondering about how I was going to install all of these tools (mysql, php, apache) and when I saw a reference to the xampp installer I was quite relieved. I have no hesitation in recommending this book to anyone interested in building a website with these tools.

Easy to Understand

I was forced into the world of PHP, MySQL and Apache by my boss, and I wasn't sure which book to get. I chose this book and I thought it was great! I did see a few typos, but in a way it made me actually learn the stuff, instead of blindly typing away and hoping the programs worked. I understood what they were doing and it has made me catch my own mistakes too. For someone who didn't really know what they were doing, I feel like an expert now! And it was nice to have useable applications when I was done- we are actively using several of these now (such as the emailing script and the user/login script- and we have plans to do more). My boss thinks I'm a genius.
I was reading these other reviews and while I can't speak for other books, I had no problems with deprecated code (I never saw that "mysql_create_db" function once in the whole book and I've been through most of it already) or the missing sql script from chapter 6 (it was the same database used in chapters 3, 4, & 5.. duh!) so I don't know what's up with these other guys. But oh well to each his own.
At any rate, if you want a good primer, get this book.

Works for me

I'm pretty well versed in the basics of computer hardware, especially as it relates to games. I've done several motherboard and memory upgrades and a lot of video-card and hard-drive/CD-ROM drive swaps. But the really serious mods -- the windows and lights and bells and whistles -- always seemed a little beyond me.

I always thought it would be cool to have a slick-looking, modded-up PC, but I wasn't sure I could handle the work, and I didn't really want to buy a ready-made one from the handful of companies that make them (and know it was really just like a thousand others out there). I was also afraid it'd end up being too expensive to justify.

But this book convinced me I could do it, and without breaking the bank. I even used the book to convince a couple of friends to go in with me on the tools and materials, so we can share the costs. We figure if a "Dummy" can do it, then we can.

Great stuff. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking to do their own custom mods.

Great start for a beginner

This is the first cake decorating book I've purchased and I am very pleased. I have never tried cake decorating but I love to bake. Making my own buttercream was a nice challenge, and I learned some great tips for how to mix the cake batter. When my buttercream wasn't quite the right consistency, I was able to use some tricks she provided to make it turn out perfectly. The recipes are delicious, too. I made an 8 inch tier of the Gilded Mocha Cake for some friends, and they were very impressed.

I'm not crazy about some of the designs, but they are helpful in giving you ideas and showing what is possible. And while I would have liked some info on fondant and gum paste, etc. I was happy to at least see some chocolate plastic flowers.

This book is so helpful, instructional, and has the most delicious recipes. That alone makes it worth buying.

THE wedding cake book

I love this book. I bought it because I am planning on making my own wedding cake for my wedding. I started out simple and have moved onto more elaborate cakes and each and everyone has turned out beautifully. She gives decorating tips(though mostly I do my own thing) and storage and transportation advice. This book is spot on and I have become something of a legend among my friends anytime there is a celebration. I am always nominated to bring the cake. This is a great book with a lot of recipes. You can mix and match cakes and frostings and fillings to no end. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to be a cake connoisseur.

It's great, but...

This is a great book for beginers. The recipes are simple, helpful and very yummy. I only have 2 issues with this book. Firstly, the recommened amount for moistening syrup was way to much in my opinion. I understand not wanting your cake to be dry but she overloads. Secondly, If you are baking a square cake be prepared to whip out your calculator in do some math. Most of the measurements are for round cakes, 6-14, but it only gives equivilents to 3 sizes of square cakes. This book would have been better if she would have added a few pages dedicated to square cakes.

It's an awesome book if you have no clue what a 401-k is all about! They give examples and instructions on how to do something with your 401-k!! This is definitely a guideline on how to understand where your money is going and why! Tons of helpful information in this book for beginners! This is a great 'starter kit' for anyone. It's also a perfect primer for college graduates who are lucky, smart and connected enough to get a job. 401-K information isn't a college course unless one majors in finance, etc., so the average newly-employed should have a working knowledge of who is doing what with their money and how they can maximize their fund (for retirement or how to roll it over when they leave that job in 2 years for the next one....) Straigforward, well-organized and easy to use, the vocabulary and definitions are most helpful. Get this and any other financial 'For Dummies' by the same author(s) and you'll be ahead of the game.

If you have a 401k or thinking about getting a 401k from work..this book is for you. It explains the importance and advantages of having a 401k plan. Get the 401k plan as soon as it is made available to the employee and get the index funds as your mutual funds. Then try to max it out to the limit based on the IRS rules and regulations. If you can do all that and stay employed for 20+ years...you will have a comfortable retirement..Nothing complicated and nothing to worry about..if if the market tanks..you buy and hold with the index funds..Just buy the book and you will be a believer in what I am telling you..;-)

Best fish book in my library

Sandford takes an unusual approach to educating current and potential aquarists about the hobby. Rather than the standard "buy this" and "do that", she begins by showing us where pet store fish come from in the wild, then moves on to how they are shaped, what they eat, how they breed, and what all this means about how to determine and meet their needs in captivity. Sandford is an excellent writer who manages to balance scientific terminology with common language and her text is beautifully illustrated with drawings and photographs. I would not hesitate to recommend the book to anyone who has the most passing interest in tropical fish. As a well-established aquarium hobbyist, I learned enough to be reading it again a year later, plus I found that short exposures to specific topics increased my spouse's rather slim interest in my pets. This book would make an excellent starting point for a parent or young person considering a first tank. I would recommend it for the classroom or home schooler as well. It is extraordinarily well done and, at the low price, a real bargain as well.

A thorough and up-to-date guide for writing grant applications

I had the third edition of this book, from 2009, and thought that it would be helpful to upgrade to the 5th edition. I'm an experienced grant-writer, having secured federal and state grants for economic development, research and the arts.

This book is a comprehensive overview of the grant-writing process. Dr. Browning takes the you through the complex process of applying for federal grants, and includes topics such as registering for the government databases (SAM), and the question of how to budget for administrative and facilities costs. Since federal grants are probably the most complicated of all funding requests, it is really helpful to map out that process. Corporate and foundation grant applications will tend to be less involved.

If anything, the book emphasizes that you really have to have your act together *before* applying for a grant. Figure out your partners, your real costs of delivery, the demographics of those who will benefit from a grant, and be able to articulate the background and mission of your organization and the purpose for which you are seek funding.

The book has substantial advice on program planning, data gathering and how to evaluate your funded program.

Edition 5, from 2014 identifies an upcoming trend. Many foundations and corporate funders now request a "letter of inquiry" or concept letter as the initial contact. They will review such letters and and if interested will invite the applicant to submit a full proposal. And, almost all submissions are done online these days.

The book suggests that a good grant writer is able to be successful at least 75% of the time (i.e. 3 out of 4 applications will be funded). That will happen only if you have successfully identified relevant funders, and have all of the prerequisites in place before submitting your application. Thankfully, Grant Writing for Dummies will give you much of what is needed to have everything in place for your next successful proposal.

French-Lite but too light and not right

I purchased this book in a Hongkong bookshop because it was the only choice and I am sorry that I did. The authors say that they want to teach essential communication skills, but their text is basically a phrase book that teaches a large number of one-liners. It is deficient in the progressive, building block approach that is so essential to language learning. Moreover, the book often digresses into too much cultural and travel information. For example, we are told how to read temperatures in Celsius, where to find a nightclub, and the advantages of buying a museum pass. Fine, but I bought the book because I wanted to study French. There are also more than a few pesky typographical mistakes and instances where the dialogue on the CD doesn't exactly agree with what is written in the text. A neophyte learning French has enough to deal with without having to figure out what the authors are trying to say. Finally, the book tries to be too cute in de-mystifying language learning and is constantly talking down to its readers. (They waste a total of six pages on cartoons written in English that make fun of studying French.) A book with a name like 'French for Dummies' should try to exceed expectations. Unfortunately, this book tends to live up to its title.

Matt Hannafin is a freelance writer, editor, and musician based in New York City. A former Frommer’s senior editor, he now writes a biweekly cruise newsletter for Frommers.com and a monthly column for the Boston Herald, writes for various magazines and newspapers, edits for most of the major New York publishing houses and several UN agencies, and is busy coauthoring 1,000 Places in the USA and Canada to See Before You Die (Workman Publishing), a sequel to the 2004 New York Times bestseller.

Heidi Sarna has cruised on more than 75 ships of all shapes and sizes, and she loves them all (well, OK, some more than others). Great for general information

The book has alot of general information. The first 93 pages covers "What's New in Cruising," "The Best of Cruising," "Choosing Your Ideal Cruise," "Booking Your Cruise & Getting the Best Price," "Things to Know Before you Go," and "The Cruise Experience." Having been on 3 cruises before, I found these pages useless; however, a first time cruise might find these pages helpful. The next 254 pages deal with "The Ratings," "The Mainstream Lines," "The Ultra Luxury Lines," and "Soft Adventure Lines & Sailing Ships." These pages were very generic and many times the same language was used over and over again. The next 270 pages deal with "The Ports of Embarkation," "Caribbean Ports of Call," and "Bermuda." The information on each of the ports is useful, with some good commentary on avoiding certain places due to crowds. However, the book does not list some attractions that were listed on the official tourism websites for some of the islands - this makes me wonder what else might not be included and how long ago did the author(s) actually go to the destinations. While the book does provide some information about some great sites to see "off the beaten path," there is no information on how to get to these sites, there is merely a reference to hire a tour guide. For most of the islands, a map of the entire island is included; however, there are very few detailed street maps of the downtown, port, or shopping areas. References to street names aren't much help without a map showing where those streets are. Fodor's Caribbean book has much more detailed listings of things available on the islands.

A well ballanced must read

If you are planning a cruise to the Caribbean, this book is a must read. The first part of the book (and the appendix) focuses almost entirely on cruise ships. The reviews of the ships are well organized by type of cruise (mainstream, luxury, adventure) cruise line, and class of ship. The reviews of the ports-of-call are brief, but it is all you really need since you sill be spending about 12 hours (or less) in port anyway. The only thing the book lacks are pictures of the ports (pictures of the ships are small, black and white pictures of the class if the ship is part of a class of similar ships, or the ship itself if it is not), and a subject index.

The Perfect Cruise and Port Guide

When I decided to take my first Caribbean cruise I checked out several guide books, but Frommer's Cruises and Ports of Call was the most thorough on each of the ships I was considering and what to expect at each port. When I finally went on the cruise, I found Frommer's information extensive and thorough. Doing a little homework with the book before arriving at port made all the difference in which shore excurions to go on, finding the best places to eat, off the beaten path and where was the best shopping. The only thing I found lacking in the book was too few photographs. Other than that, I found the book to be the perfect resourse.
