About the Author
About the Authors and Contributors Lesley Logan is a freelance writer who has worked in publishing over the years as a nonfiction ghostwriter, publicity copywriter, and editor. Originally from New York, she has lived in London for many years with her husband Tom and daughter Nora. Richard Ehrlich, who wrote the chapter on dining, has been writing about food and drink in major United Kingdom magazines and newspapers since 1988. His work appears regularly in The Independent on Sunday, The Guardian, and Time Out. An American, Richard has lived in London since 1974. Delilah Durrant is a freelance writer who worked on the updated edition of this book, expanding the chapters on exercise and recreation, children, and entertainment. She also did the hard work of fact checking. She has lived in London her entire life and lives there still with her daughter Erell. Andy Craft, a native Londoner, wrote the chapter on exercise and recreation as well as sections on British culture, what the locals already know, and getting around London. He is the author of several screenplays, and teaches screenwriting at NYU in New York City, where he now resides. Tony Heiberg wrote the entertainment chapter. He is a freelance writer and has worked as a critic and journalist for a number of magazines on both sides of the Atlantic. He is now working on a novel. Tracy Thompkins updated the nightclub profiles after extensive research during a semester at Regents College in London. This is an excellent, practical guide without all the fluff that is in many travel books. Very practical for reading before planning the trip and for carrying along during the trip to London.

Great guide!

I just purchased this book after checking out 10 different London guide books at the library. This was by far my favorite! I have never been to London before and this has been the most helpful book I have used in planning my trip. It provides the very basic information, such as what line is the correct line at customs and currency information. Additionaly, it has tons of info, such as the exact cost of an attraction, restaurant, or hotel (no vague words or symbols), nearest tube stop, what time of day to go to the site to avoid crowds, lots of insider tips (ie. to avoid lengthy security checks, leave your bags homes when visiting Houses of Parliament), and approx time you should allow to see the site (I couldn't find this info in any other book and I was specifically looking for this tidbit). It also has ratings of appeal for each age group in addition to the authors own personal rating. For example, for Site X, it might give it 2 stars for preschooler, 2 stars for grade school, 3 stars for teens, 3 stars for young adults, 4 stars for adults over 30, and 4 stars for seniors. This is perfect for family planning. There are two minor reasons I did not give this book 5 stars: the author uses its own "zone" system (zones 1-12) to group together attractions, hotels, etc. This might work perfect for other cities and is a good idea, but since London has its own official Zone system for public transportation, this can be confusing for London firsttimers like myself who are still trying to figure out London's transportation system...you have to constantly remember when the author says zone 2, he doesn't mean London's official Zone 2. I wish the author had chosen a different word than "zone" for his own groupings. Also, I could not find any info about the changing of the guards nor about the Horse Guards (perhaps I just missed it?). No tourist guide book can be considered complete without this information. Nonetheless, this is my favorite guide book thus far and will definetly be with me on my trip to London in a few weeks.

Rely on the Unofficial Guides

As a previous user of the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World, the Unofficial Guide to London was the first travel book my wife and I purchased for our June 2009 trip to London. Overall, we were not disappointed. We carried this book with us everywhere during our stay in London. The book provides excellent information about maps, sights, attractions, and the culture of London. I did not give the book five stars because I feel that the book seriously lacked good information about restaurants and other eating options. If you rely upon your travel guide to help find a place to eat, you'll definitely need to buy a second guide. I also would have liked to have seen suggested daily schedules similar to the Disney guide. Again, I feel that the Unofficial Guide is a wonderful travel companion. Do not waste your time and money on any Rick Steves travel guide! Buy the Unoffical Guide to London.
