Takes You From Basic to Advanced
By David Wilson
I ordered this book with some skepticism. I could read music before I go this book but I guess at a very rudimentary level. I have looked through other music theory books and have been left a little bewildered about musical keys, cord construction and such. This book demystifies these and many other musical concepts. I now understand musical keys and many other things that had always seemed very mysterious to me. The book starts off very basically and slowly advances as it introduces you to more advanced concepts by adding more information about how music is constructed. Someone with a firmer background in music may be board by the pace but for others of us it is just right. I recommend it if, like me, you always wanted to understand music but never found someone who could describe it in an understandable way.

Not Well Organized or Presented
By frankp93
I can't honestly review Music Theory for Dummies as a beginner, but I hope to suggest who might find it useful - or not.

The book has an odd split between a first half that contains very elementary material about reading notation, intervals, scales, chords and progressions, followed by a later part that describes high-level form and composition ideas from a classical point of view. I don't think the transition works: the first part doesn't adequately prepare you for the second, and I'm not sure how much the second even belongs in this kind of book.

If you're interested in jazz improvisation, there's barely a couple of paragraphs that mention jazz and nothing worth your while to play. If you're interested in computer music, in spite of the pop references sprinkled throughout, there's a single mention of synthesizers in the chapter on tone and timbre; otherwise this book could have been written 40-50 years ago.

If you're a rock or blues player, there's little besides Roman numeral-style outlines of blues and pop song formulas - which is ironic because that's how a lot of people who don't know theory already communicate.

If you're a listener who wants to understand or analyze how music works - there's solid information in here but it's an overview and very compressed. At best it may point you in the direction of other books with more depth.

If you're interested in writing music of whatever genre, there are much better books out there - including the one written by co-author Holly Day, "Music Composition for Dummies".

Personally, I think this material is covered in more depth, with useful exercises, and better writing in Michael Miller's three volume series that includes, "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Music Theory, Music Composition, Arranging and Orchestration".

Musicians, take note.......................
By FranklyMuso
This book is well structured, leading the reader into interesting aspects of music in an easy-to-follow manner. Forget the bit about Dummies in the title. This is serious reading material for the true musician. Those who purport to be will quickly become bored with the detail. Congratulations Holly, for providing so many facets of history on God's great gift to mankind, namely MUSIC. You did a great job.

Pick another book!
By Pen Name
***NOTE TO WROX*** Before you release a tutorial, have someone other than the authors (or their friends) try each and every lesson!

This has to be one of the WORST tutorial/step-by-step books ever written.

I'm a seasoned DBA that has worked on every version of MS-SQL ever released. Starting with 4.9.2. I've also worked on Sybase, Oracle, Postgress and MySQL. Add to this several years of VB/C experience and time spent as a corporate trainer, and you can guess my technical aptitude. My experience with DTS/ETL includes hundreds (if not thousands) of packages on 7.0 & 2000. This book was purchased as a means of ramping up for a new consulting gig on SSIS. It was a complete waste of money.

The "tutorials" are disorganized, confusing, and the instructions don't match the examples. Even more annoying are the sections that appear to be lessons that aren't. You won't realize this until you start inputting the example and then get to a new paragraph that tells you this subject will be covered in another chapter. Even worse are the real examples whose instructions refer you back to a step that was left out or edited out of the book. This begins in chapter two when you are told to create a new "project" and then later told to add another project to the "solution", but, there was never any mention on how to start a "solution". This sets the tone for the rest of the book. You'll learn early on to read the entire chapter, then go back to the beginning and "try" the examples. Don't even get me started on the explanations being on one page, while the diagrams for the explanation are on the back of that page. Read a few sentences; turn the page to see the diagram; turn back to read some more; turn back to see the diagram (lather, rinse, repeat...)

It normally takes me only a few hours to breeze through five or six chapters of a technical tutorial. After TWO DAYS (a full Saturday and Sunday) of frustration that got me as far as half way through the fourth chapter, I discarded the book, drove to a local bookstore and bought something else off the self.

Rule #1 for tutorial books: The instructions must be COMPLETE.
Rule #2: The instructions must be in the order necessary to complete the lesson, (ie. 1-2-3-4, not, 1-4-3-5, oops...did we forget or edit out a step?)

Hang on a sec.... have any of the reviewers ACTUALLY READ this book??
By ACD
While I share the enthusiasm of the other reviewers, I'm not entirely convinced that any of them have read far enough to give the book 5 stars. I have nearly 10 years under my belt in BI, worked with SQL Server extensively, and not too shabby in the .NET department either; to be certain, SSIS 2005 is truly groundbreaking. However, the watchful readers will find a hurried book in their hands, one numerous typos and misleading information. For example, while I was able to figure out the nature of the strongly-typed properties of the incoming Row object for the Script Component example (Chapter 7) (you need to define the "Cleaned" ones yourself in the Script Transformation Editor to support the code for your Script Component), the book isn't completely clear and such information may not be so apparent to those new to the SSIS (or ETL) experience. Donald Farmer's book covering SSIS 2005 Scripting (the beta version) covers the Script Task and Script Component Transform Task better than Professional SQL Server 2005 Integration Services. Whilst I have focused on Chapter 7, I have found this pattern throughout the book. To be clear, I'm not terribly displeased with this book... it provides just enough coverage of the new product to get you going (with a welcome "under the hood" look at the SSIS engine) it's just that a 2nd Edition is required from WROX/WILEY to clean up its somewhat misleading content.

Okay, but a little bit disappointing too
By Carsten Cumbrowski
I bought this book and had a lot of expectations. 10 Writers were involved to write this book which covers a complete new software tool from Microsoft, introduced with the newly released SQL Server 2005 replacing the DTS Service of SQL Server 2000 and earlier Versions plus adding tons of new features to the enterprise Database Solution which were previously unavailable.

The fact that 10 people contributed to it can be felt throughout the book, because no or little efforts were made to keep the writing style consistent. That can be a bit confusing at times.

Also when it comes to the content, are a lot of things not covert at all or not very well. When I did seek the help from the book for the first time for a very specific problem I tried to solve with SSIS, did the book fail to provide the answers to me. It addressed the problem, but it only addressed the stuff I already figured out myself. To the item I had my problem with did only exist a side note which did not help me at all. That was already a bad start.

I am looking for better alternatives which I have not found yet. It is probably good for somebody who wants to get an overview or general idea of the new Service, but might be the wrong choice for somebody who has specific applications in mind and tries to find answers to problems in this book.

He's a very smart quy and I'm sure he'll pick things up quickly!

very functional

I have this book in my purse and take it out to review over and over again. It's a great little book that offers lots of helpful hints about the language and culture of Japan. A great book for anyone looking to expand their language.

Genki desu ka
By T. Hunt
I bought this book while dating a woman from Japan. I was mildly interested in communicating with her in her native language and thought that learning a handful of basic phrases would garner me some admiration. I'd flip through the book, land on some common phrase, and regurgitate it to her during an evening out. "Konbanwan," I'd say. "Uchi...uh...uchi ni kimasen wa? Wait, is it wa? No, ka! Uchi ni kimasen ka." She'd smile politely and remind me that since we were living together, I no longer needed to ask her to come home with me.

It dawned on me early on that trying to impress a tri-lingual woman with novelty sentences pulled from a Dummies book was not one of my best moves. My goal was to be cute and spontaneous, but I instead came across at as partially endearing, but mostly simple. An American, basically. So, I abandoned the book, and instead vowed to wow her with my anime knowledge. (She's not a fan, so that was easy.)

Fast forward a year. We're now married and I'm suddenly in a position where I have to start learning the language. I flew to Japan to meet her family a few months ago and dragged this book with me but neglected to actually read it. I wish I would have. They were polite, kind people, who tried their best to communicate with me using broken English while I squinted and cocked my head. I was on their turf and they were trying to speak in my language. They did a fine job in doing so, but I boarded the plane to come home feeling embarassed and ashamed. I needed to get busy.

And here I am. I obviously have the advantage of living with a wonderful reference for the language but I've initiated the learning completely on my own using this book. It breaks down basic sentence structures, and that's all I really need for right now. I typically memorize about ten words a day using my Japanese-English dictionary and then insert them into said learned sentences randomly when speaking with her, albeit seemingly as a massive toddler. Ex: when I say that I'm walking to our grass with a knife she assumes that I'm off to mow the lawn. We improvise.

I think the book does an adequate job of teaching introductory Japanese in other areas as well. The scan of the product doesn't show the Table of Contents, so I'll outline the Chapters for you.

Chapter 1: Say it How? Speaking Japanese.
Chapter 2: Grammar on a Diet: Just the Basics
Chapter 3: Numerical Gumbo: Counting of All Kinds
Chapter 4: Making New Friends and Enjoying Small Talk
Chapter 5: Enjoying a Drink and a Snack (or Meal)
Chapter 6: Shop til' You Drop
Chapter 7: Making leisure a Top Priority
Chapter 8: When you Gotta Work
Chapter 9: I Get Around: Transportation
Chapter 10: Find a Place to Lay Your Weary Head
Chapter 11: Dealing with Emergencies
Chapter 12: Ten Favorite Japanese Expressions
Chapter 13: Ten Phrases That Make You Sound Like a Local

Each chapter spans about ten pages and includes enough information to get you started in each area. Again, this isn't an in-depth book detailing all you need to know about the language, but rather a groovy little starting point to get your feet wet. (Keep in mind that there's not much in the way of written language, here. It's designed exclusively for spoken Japanese word.)

I do recommend this book to anyone traveling to Japan with zero education. For most of you, the flight over should provide ample enough time to at least memorize some pleasantries and necessary words/phrases offered here.

I also recommend this book to anyone considering seriously taking up Japanese as another language, especially if you're in a situation where you're not able to take a college course. It's simplified an entry-level chunk of the process allowing you an opportunity to decide if this really is a task you're willing to undertake.

I've scattered little seeds from this book all over my brain and completely satisfied with the results thus far. It's a beginner's book, for sure, and I knew that when I opened it, so I'm not disappointed. I'll be moving up to something a bit more complicated in the near future.

Sayonara!

The Cooking of Southwest France: Recipes from France's Magnificient Rustic Cuisine, by Paula Wolfert

"An indispensable cookbook."
- Jeffrey Steingarten, Vogue

When Paula Wolfert's The Cooking of Southwest France was first published in 1983, it became an instant classic. This award-winning book was praised by critics, chefs, and home cooks alike as the ultimate source of recipes and information about a legendary style of cooking. Wolfert's recipes for cassoulet and confit literally changed the American culinary scene. Confit, now ubiquitous on restaurant menus, was rarely served in the United States before Wolfert presented it.

Now, twenty-plus years later, Wolfert has completely revised her groundbreaking book. In this new edition, you'll find sixty additional recipes - thirty totally new recipes, along with thirty updated recipes from Wolfert's other books. Recipes from the original edition have been revised to account for current tastes and newly available ingredients; some have been dropped.

You will find superb classic recipes for cassoulet, sauce perigueux, salmon rillettes, and beef daube; new and revised recipes for ragouts, soups, desserts, and more; and, of course, numerous recipes for the most exemplary of all southwest French ingredients - duck - including the traditional method for duck confit plus two new, easier variations.

Other recipes include such gems as Chestnut and Cepe Soup With Walnuts, magnificent lusty Oxtail Daube, mouthwatering Steamed Mussels With Ham, Shallots, and Garlic, as well as Poached Chicken Breast, Auvergne-Style, and the simple yet sublime Potatoes Baked in Sea Salt. You'll also find delicious desserts such as Batter Cake With Fresh Pears From the Correze, and Prune and Armagnac Ice Cream.

Each recipe incorporates what the French call a truc, a unique touch that makes the finished dish truly extraordinary. Evocative new food photographs, including sixteen pages in full color, now accompany the text.

Connecting the 200 great recipes is Wolfert's unique vision of Southwest France. In sharply etched scenes peopled by local characters ranging from canny peasant women to world-famous master chefs, she captures the region's living traditions and passion for good food.

Gascony, the Perigord, Bordeaux, and the Basque country all come alive in these pages. This revised edition of The Cooking of Southwest France is truly another Wolfert classic in its own right.

When it comes to French food, many Americans know little beyond the bistros of Paris or the herbs of Provence. But many of France's most delightful culinary traditions are to be found near (or nearish) the Pyrénées. For example, there is nothing more enticing than a jar of foie gras, a baguette and a glass of Vin de Cahors; even a simple bowl of Périgord walnuts and a snifter of armagnac can make an immensely satisfying dessert. These combinations can easily be reproduced in an American kitchen-all you need is a good supermarket and plenty of cash-but for more complex dishes, like a Béarnais bean stew, you need a guide. Enter Wolfert and this expanded revision of her 1983 classic, replete with a handy index listing dozens of internet shops that sell everything from truffles to snails. Not only is this is a useful book, it's also interesting to read. Wolfert includes a chapter on the "Tastes of the French Southwest," with informative sections on cèpes, regional cheeses and truffles, just to name a few. And the recipes do not disappoint. Some standouts include Morue Pil-Pil, a spicy, slow-cooked salt cod dish recipe from the Basque region, and Cèpes of the Poor, chunks of eggplant sautéed to replicate the texture of costly mushrooms. Be advised: although Wolfert does allow for less fattening substitutions, like olive oil for duck fat, this is not a cookbook for dieters. And many of these recipes will take hours, if not a full day, of preparation, but the food is worth the wait, and the weight.

Review
"...Bold and indefatigable...Wolfert writes recipes with such vivid and explicit instructions you might think you were really cooking in Toulousse...." (New York Times Book Review, December 4, 2005)

From the Inside Flap
"An indispensable cookbook."
—Jeffrey SteingArten, Vogue

When Paula Wolfert's The Cooking of Southwest France was first published in 1983, it became an instant classic. This award-winning book was praised by critics, chefs, and home cooks alike as the ultimate source of recipes and information about a legendary style of cooking. Wolfert's recipes for cassoulet and confit literally changed the American culinary scene. Confit, now ubiquitous on restaurant menus, was rarely served in the United States before Wolfert presented it.

Now, twenty-plus years later, Wolfert has completely revised her groundbreaking book. In this new edition, you'll find sixty additional recipes—thirty totally new recipes, along with thirty updated recipes from Wolfert's other books. Recipes from the original edition have been revised to account for current tastes and newly available ingredients; some have been dropped.

You will find superb classic recipes for cassoulet, sauce périgueux, salmon rillettes, and beef daube; new and revised recipes for ragouts, soups, desserts, and more; and, of course, numerous recipes for the most exemplary of all southwest French ingredients—duck—including the traditional method for duck confit plus two new, easier variations.

Other recipes include such gems as Chestnut and Cèpe Soup With Walnuts, magnificent lusty Oxtail Daube, mouthwatering Steamed Mussels With Ham, Shallots, and Garlic, as well as Poached Chicken Breast, Auvergne-Style, and the simple yet sublime Potatoes Baked in Sea Salt. You'll also find delicious desserts such as Batter Cake With Fresh Pears From the Corrèze, and Prune and Armagnac Ice Cream.

Gascony, the Périgord, Bordeaux, and the Basque country all come alive in these pages. This revised edition of The Cooking of Southwest France is truly another Wolfert classic in its own right.

Excellent instruction for the experienced cuisinier
By J. V. Lewis
Wolfert's book has taken the short shelf in my kitchen alongside Richard Olney, Alice Waters, and Marcella Hazan. The Cooking of Southwest France, especially in this new and improved edition, is a rare feat: not only are the recipes detailed, clear, and deeply informative, but the accompanying text is the best I've found for a hard-to-penetrate region of highly chauvanistic local opinion and practice. The introduction and the section on the flavors of the Southwest is an enlightening essay on its own, the bare bones of a great travel book which is fleshed out in the recipes.

Now about those recipes: Richard Olney has long been my standard for great cooking instruction. His recipes manage to be clear and opinionated, true to the region [in his case mostly Provence] but manageable in a big-city American kitchen, relentless in their pursuit of pleasure, dismissive of the narrow and purse-lipped health obsessions of the food-as-medicine Anglo-Saxon crowd, and deeply informed about the ingredients per se. Paula Wolfert, to my knowledge, is the first writer of cookbooks to equal Olney's contribution. Her style is more broadly journalistic and less opinionated, but her recipes are equally true to their sources.

That being said, her sources are French. French farmhouse kitchens and French starred restaurants. So these recipes can be arduous, a real stretch for the average American home kitchen. Many recipes require not only equipment most Americans don't own, but techniques that are dificult to master and even harder to research. But we welcomed Julia Child by spending more time in the kitchen and more money buying kitchen tools, and Wolfert's recipes deserves that same dedication. As Richard Olney said, paraphrased: "The best food requires effort and skill and a sensitivity to the raw materials". So, after stretching my well-equipped kitchen to the limits this last weekend making a beef daube with cepes-prune sauce, stuffed onion a la Michel Bras, and God knows what other multi-page recipes only He can forgive, I can say that if your stove can't sloooow simmer, if you don't have a fine seive, if you don't have access to real cepes, if the idea of reducing two bottles of Cahors to two cups of sauce makes you shudder, and if you don't want to stand at the stove skimming and re-skimming, then this book isn't for you. Don't just open this book on the evening before the boss is due for dinner. Start a week ahead and plan well, and know that your efforts will be rewarded if you are true and steadfast.

A superb introduction to regional cooking
By Michael Kaan
There are few books in English on regional French cooking that aren't about Provence, so a work like this is a real find. More important, Wolfert has written with her usual anthropological detail and authenticity. I think this is one of the best books on regional French cooking of any kind. The book is well organized by course and by type of meat. There is a special chapter on cassoulet as well, and very detailed instructions on making a confit that is as good as Madeleine Kamman's. Because most of this is peasant or bourgeois cooking, there are few things in the recipes that will be hard to find, and there is a lot on fascinating new techniques. There's an interesting recipe for mussels in which they're packed upright into an iron pan and covered with dried pine needles which are then set on fire. Also, Wolfert offers some very useful tips on reducing certain kinds of fat content while preserving taste, and what's best is that this is done for the sake of taste and quality, not with all the usual eating-disordered hand-wringing. Anyone interested in some of the real classics of French cooking--cassoulet and confit--will love this book. Most recipes demand a certain amount of experience and comfort in the kitchen, but the payoffs are superb. Great armchair reading too.

Review
“…I suppose in the end the reason why there are so few books is that Bob Boiko said most of it in the Content Management Bible…”(Information World Review, June 2003)

From the Publisher
As the Information Age dawns, the information at our disposal expands haphazardly. The opportunities for targeting and distributing information expand too, but are left unexploited for lack of an organized approach. The Content Management Bible answers these key questions about the system readers might employ to control the expansion of information and organize targeting and distribution:

* What does a system that handles massive amounts of information look like?

* How can a system be created that understands each piece of information and guides authors to easily contribute to a growing outline of knowledge?

* How can a single system produce a wide range of well-targeted custom publications from the same information base?

* How can automation and systematization of information happen without endangering the relationship between an author and her audience?

* What are the steps and processes you need to create such a system?

* How can this system serve an organization's overall business goals and future initiatives?

* How do I transform content to fit the various distribution methods such as web, print, handhelds and others?

This title is a must have for readers who have felt the pain of too much content and not enough system to handle it. For those who have tried and failed to "tame the information beast," the Content Management Bible is a godsend.

From the Author
I wrote this book because I had to. For more than 10 years, I’ve been stuffing my head so full of the design, programming, management, and content of information systems that I have to let some out before I can learn anymore.

Seriously, from the first time I matched a printed user’s guide against the capabilities of Windows 3.0 Help, to the last time I sat with a dot-com client and discussed the impact of massive content management on the architecture of an e-commerce site, I have been living the transition from print to the computer screen.

I've seen a ton of technologies and a slew of systems. I've learned enough to know that there is a lot to discuss and figure out. My thinking on what I have experienced has reached some sort of embryonic maturity and is ready to hatch, so here it comes!

* To do e-business, you need the organization and focus that a content management system provides.

* To be useful on the Web and beyond, information must be designed for reuse and must be packaged so that it can be located and automatically organized into targeted publications.

* Content is the information and interactivity that organizations must harness in order to deliver value to their customers.

* Content management systems (CMS) collect, manage, and publish this information and interactivity.

* A CMS is not a CD-ROM that you install, start, and forget about. Rather, it is an ongoing process of knowing your information and your audiences and how to match the two together in a set of publications.

This book attempts to lay a comprehensive foundation under these concepts and create a solid methodology for the practice of content management and, by implication, e-business.

Buy it!
By Ashley Friedlein
This is an excellent book. If you have anything to do with managing digital media, in particular if you are facing the enormous demands of managing content for a large web site, then this book will prove very valuable. I think the cover, and size of book, makes it appear a little too technical but I actually it is Project Managers, Producers, Marketing Managers, Editorial and Content teams, Analysts and the like who will benefit most.
It's certainly not a dummies guide and it's not the strategic musings of the latest e-guru: it is practical, applicable, sensible, informative, authoritative, realistic and, despite the 900+ pages, eminently readable. A great balance of process and practice. And, as you would expect, well organised and cross-referenced.
Content management is a BIG topic and if you haven't come up against it yet, you will. Without it, all those buzz words like `eCRM', `community' and `personalisation' just aren't possible. Content management addresses big, and growing, problems as well as opening up exciting new opportunities for multi-platform, personalised publishing. This big book is the best thing I've yet read to help you on your way.

The most complete and authoritative reference book about CMS
By Manny Hernandez
As a Project Manager with a mandate to come up with a Content Management System for my organization, over the course of the past three months I've found the CMS Bible by Boiko simply essential, as most of the other 'bible' tech books I've read have been. He provides a very robust framework that you can follow in your project, if you have the time to read through its almost 1000 pages.
First, he delves into a very thorough discussion about the more 'phylosophical' topics of content (what it is, what is data, what is metadata, etc.) and content management at large. If you haven't gotten your feet wet with a CMS project before, the first 10 chapters (175 pages) will get you soaked with the type of dilemmas you are bound to face when you work on a CMS.
Then, he provides what could be considered a "recipe" to put together a CMS successfully (though no two CMS projects are ever alike, but a lot of them have similar characteristics). There are a number of chapters and sections specifically devoted to the steps required to ensure a successful outsourcing of the project, but the framework he provides is not limited to it: you can perfectly apply it to an in-house implementation. Also, he tends to paint the largest possible picture (with all staff possible, etc.) but you can very easily scale it down to the size and shape of your organization.
In general, his framework goes back once and again to the concept of the "Wheel of Content Management" where he connects the spikes that allow the 'wheel' to move: goals and requirements, audiences, publications, authors, acquisition sources, workflow and staff and access structures, all revolving around the central content component classes with metadata as the outside of the wheel, serving as a container for it all.
He doesn't wrap up the book without devoting enough space to XML and its close cousin, the DTD. He even provides a small VB app to convert Word content to XML, and that's still "only" on page 788. If you haven't noticed by now, this book is MASSIVE, and if there's any issue with it, that would be it: the fact that you will need to devote a long time to processing it. But all in all, the book with its companion web site is an invaluable tool for all Project Managers who have in their hands the responsibility of giving birth to a CMS for their organizations.

Should be given six stars
By A Customer
Content management is a major task in my job - we integrate 2 ERP systems, web servers, 2 document management systems.... and there are plenty of places we could improve.
This book was a godsend. Almost every page has something that's relevant. Almost every page, I find myself thinking "I know exactly what you mean", or "Hey, we could really use that idea".
But despite all the useful information, it remains very generalised and extremely readable. Unlike many books of this kind, it doesn't dwell on specific products (or even programming languages) that will likely be out of date in twelve months. The focus is very much on concepts and best practices that will stand the reader in good stead for a long time.
I would go so far as to say this is the most helpful IT book I have bought in the past 12 months. Highly recommended.
