Starting an eBay Business for Dummies
By Bruce Hinson
Although I haven't yet finished the book, I've read several chapters with my trusty highlighter and done a careful scan of many others. This is truly the work of someone who knows her way around eBay: not a stone left unturned. Marcia Collier has written a bible on how to navigate the world's largest online mall and has upheld the reputation of the Dummies series as being an unparalleled source for newcomers.

Great For Americans - But What About the Rest of the World?
By Spm G.
I'm a Canadian seller on eBay, and although most of the information within the book was quite applicable to me, much was very US-centric. For example, the sections on shipping, payment options, and legalities.
Otherwise, the book was great for NEW sellers on eBay - I found the information was very basic, and mostly things I know (even if I ignore them.) I did find the section on communication with your buyer very helpful, as it provided examples of emails to send at end of auction, missing payment, and day of shipping.
Overall, if you are just getting started at eBay, this book is EXACTLY what you need to catch up to the rest of us very quickly and effectively - I wish I'd had this book 2 years ago when I began. But if you're a seasoned eBayer, I think you will find yourself quickly flipping through the pages seeking new information.

As the Title Says, Good Beginning Book
By John Matlock
This is a good general introduction to using SQL to build a database, put some data into it and then to get it back out when you need to use it for something. The author says that all of the SQL examples have been tested using MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2, Microsoft Access, and Oracle 10g. That says that the SQL used in the examples has to be very general in nature and not take advantage of newer and more powerful commands that have come about since these programs were written (particularly Access which uses the Jet engine that's more or less compliant with SQL:89).

This is not a bad approach, because while you might miss out on some of the nifty commands, your code will be compatiable with virtually any database that you are using. You will find comments in the book like when discussing the substring function he says "MS Access doesn't utilize the SUBSTRING() function. Instead, it employs the MID() function...." I don't know how he could have done it any differently without writing five different books.

This is an excellent beginning book. Use it to get started and to understand the concepts behind the SQL language. Then you may want to get a higher level book on the particular database you are using.

A good book on the SQL language
By Ryan Tramel
This is a book on the language not any particular SQL database software. There are a great number of people who have trouble finding a good book on the language itself.
This would be the first one I'd recommend.

No Train, No Gain
By Edwin C. Pauzer
One of the pitfalls of being a training specialist for such a long time is that it is easy to become complacent with your knowledge level and your writing habits. "Training for Dummies," which should be titled "Training for Schmarties" is one of those books that will help you avoid that.

Author, Elaine Biech covers the instructional systems design model (ISD) or A.D.D.I.E., in detail. These are analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. She states the difference between what it means to be a teacher vs. being a trainer. This is one of the only texts I have seen that offers some construction of an instructional design draft, although I wish she would have shown and explained a two-column format in depth. She did provide samples of a three- and four-column format.

Biech goes into overdrive regarding implementation from room set-up, the things that could go wrong, dealing with nervousness, and handling the disruptive influence, all types of them, to mention just a few. She also covers the four (or five if you prefer) levels of evaluation superbly.

One area I was hoping that she would address is how trainers can deal with managers who make disastrous training decisions that will be a supreme waste of time and money, but will blame the trainer rather than recognizing their decision as the reason for failure. (I was once asked to do training to control or reduce absenteeism. Thank God, he had a poor memory)! This is a constant uphill battle for trainers and I see half-hearted training efforts squandered on almost a weekly basis. (If you're out there reading this, no, you can't have Team Building in only one day Why? Because it's not enough time to build teams, dummy)!

I have a few dozen texts on training. If you could only have one of them, this would be the one I would give you. If you're serious about training, it is one book you need to keep on your table instead of your shelf.

Remember...

No train, no gain.

P.S. Don't get overconfident if you have a full seminar in Hawaii or Scottsdale, AZ. They might have other reasons for being there.

Even If You ARE Smart...
By The Least of These
Most of the time, people asked to conduct a training event or to become trainers are really smart, really good at what they do, and want to help others become good also. Where the perception that these smart people are "dummies" comes is from the stupid things they do in class, in their small group demonstration sessions, conducting on the job training, or in one-on-one mentoring. It has always amazed me that otherwise smart people can be so dumb when it comes to teaching others what they know.

TRAINING FOR DUMMIES comes to the rescue with a plethora of advice, helpful tools, and resources as well as a clear articulation of WHY you do something (or don't do it) when training. Using Gagne's Nine Instructional Events and other solid, research-based instructional models, TRAINING FOR DUMMIES provides anyone - from novice to experienced trainer - a clear roadmap to success as a trainer.

DO NOT skim this book. Turn to the sections that fit your most pressing need (and there is a ton of them!) and read long, and read deep. Learn how to handle that challenging student as well as understand why that student may be exhibiting "dysfunctional" behaviors when you are working so hard to help them learn. Learn how to organize your thoughts, your interactions with the trainees, and all those things that successful trainers do. It is no wonder this book is endorsed by the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD), it works!

Read it before EVERY class, after every class, and keep it by your bed. At night, read a paragraph or section before you go to bed. In the morning, read it before starting your day. Keep a learning journal nearby to write down questions, insights, or the many ideas TRAINING FOR DUMMIES will inspire. This is a VERY user-friendly book. Your trainees, students, bosses, and fellow trainers will be glad you read it and use its advice!

About the Author
Conrad Carlberg is the author of more than ten books about Microsoft Excel. As a multi-time recipient of Microsoft’s MVP designation for Excel, he is a nationally recognized expert on that application.
Carlberg’s Ph.D. in statistics involves work in forecasting, as does his work in telecommunications and the health-care industry. He used the techniques in this book to reduce a crushing $24 million inventory owned by a Baby Bell to under $10 million in 18 months. The carrying costs for $24 million in equipment are significant. The point: This forecasting stuff works.
As preparation for starting his consultancy, Carlberg spent two years as a sales engineer for a Fortune 500 company.

A Unique and Valuable Book
By T. Schurman
I read the book from cover to cover and was thoroughly enlightened. From a content perspective, the book is first rate. Carlberg not only explains how to forecast, but he also clarifies the pros and cons of the various methods, explains how to reduce forecasting error, and offers excellent insight into regression and the other statistics involved in making and evaluating a forecast.

Carlberg also masterfully integrates theory with practice by clearly explaining how to best utilize Excel for forecasting. I consider myself a very advanced user of Excel, but nevertheless benefited from Carlberg's sophisticated understanding of Excel. He provides an excellent overview of the pros, cons, and pitfalls of using the Analysis Toolpak vs. spreadsheet modeling, and offers a number of arcane Excel tips that I haven't found elsewhere. For example, despite years of Excel experience, I never understood (or, more accurately, noticed) the difference between a `Category Axis' and a `Value Axis' in an Excel chart.

I almost gave Excel Sales Forecasting four stars, for one important reason: The book was poorly organized. The main topics in the book - moving averages, exponential smoothing, and regression - were broken up into too many pieces, such that each topic was covered multiple times with a lot of unnecessary repetition. I realize this is, to some extent, the nature of Dummies books, which are not necessarily meant to be read cover-to-cover. But as a result, I often found myself needlessly re-reading material several times and, conversely, often had to flip back several chapters because I had forgotten some of the nuances of one of the methods by the time I got to a more advanced section. Having just finished the book, I still feel like I need to review it one more time, by topic, to put all the `pieces' back together in my mind.

With the exception of the final rant above, the book is outstanding and provides an insightful introduction to someone like myself who knew nothing of forecasting.

I'm not one to normally quote old sayings, but this book brought to mind the Chinese (Confucius) proverb: "I hear, I forget. I see, I remember. I do, I understand." Learning forecasting via Excel helped strengthen my understanding. The author and Wiley (the publisher) deserve a lot of credit for producing this unique and valuable book.

A book I've needed for a long time
By Linda A. Tetrault
I know that Dummies books are supposed to be easygoing and offer a lighter tone than most, so I was surprised to see this topic getting the Dummies treatment. I'm glad to report that it works. Excel Sales Forecasting is very reader-friendly, and it demystifies intimidating concepts like "exponential smoothing" and "mutiple regression." I've done a lot of numeric analysis but not much forecasting, mainly because the available texts are so dense and inpenetrable. No more! This book provides the material I need to understand, clearly and with useful detail and examples. It covers the basics and also dips into some more advanced topics. It considers not just the number crunching aspects, but also the business context that you're forecasting into. And it's fun to read! We dummies have a secret: we're smart enough to get books written for us that don't make our eyes glaze over. This one makes the grade.

I was impressed with what this book could offer
By Vijai P. Atavane
If you are new to forecasting and want to learn forecasting in a breeze, this is the book for you. If you like to use excel spreadsheets and want to play with data, this book gets you started in the right path. The book teaches you 3 types of forecasting techniques ( moving average, exponential smoothing and regression forecasts) and explains how to use excel functions to use these techniques.

In fact I have used the concepts like exponential smoothing and regression analysis on spreadsheets based on the book at work and at school.

You will like this book if

1. You are new to forecasting and want to learn in less than 24 hrs.
2. Like using excel formula functions.
3. Like to analyze statistical data
4. Want to develop simple to use forecasting models for your work or for your school project.

You really Can Do it yourself
By A. Clinton
With the help of this book I was able to make a pair of roman shades for my guest bedroom and I must say they turned out pretty darned good. I'm going to tackle a slip cover for my wing chair next!

The directions are straightforward and easy to understand. They also help identify those projects that are easy for a beginner as well as ones that take a bit more sewing knowledge. Good book to add to your DIY library.

Save your money and buy a good magazine or go to the library. The pictures and ideas in this book look like grade school projects. Definitely not top shelf patterns or methods. Very unsophisticated and downright ugly projects. There are many better books for sewing and decorating for beginners.

Window Treatments & Slipcovers For Dummies
By Design Lover
I bought this book on the strength of Mark Montano's work on While You Were Out and it's fantastic! So many adorable projects, and most of them are super easy and you don't even have to know how to sew well. You can use glue guns or safety pins and still get a really nice, professional look.

There were things for kids' rooms too, which I really loved. I made a window treatment for my cousin's bedroom in one afternoon! Great

book. Good job, Mark and Carly!!

Amazon.com Review
Unsolicited commercial email--spam--has become the most frequent complaint among users of the Internet. Its blaring subject lines and gaudy content--repetitive at best and frequently offensive--have made it much harder to make productive use of computers. Fighting Spam for Dummies presents some techniques for keeping your email address off spammers' mailing lists and, when that fails, keeping junk mail out of your primary inbox with filters and other utilities. As a last resort, the book (which, oddly, has three co-authors of its 200 small pages) shows you how to adjust your email program so it doesn't automatically show pictures and is less likely to spread viruses.

There's a fair bit of interesting material in this book, a lot of which has to do with the tricks spammers use to conceal their identities. You'll find detailed instructions on how to convert the header lines of a garbage message--complete with obfuscated URLs and fake IP addresses--into the real origin of the message. Of course, there's not much more to do once you've figured out that the message originated in Taiwan or Russia, but that's not the fault of the authors. Elsewhere in this slender handbook, you'll find click-by-click instructions for erecting filters and making other worthwhile configuration changes in Eudora, Netscape and Mozilla Mail, several versions of Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, and several Webmail sites. --David Wall

Topics covered: Where spam comes from and what you can do about it. Instructions for configuring email clients focus on software for Microsoft Windows.

Limited advice, mostly for end users
By W Boudville
A simple book, aimed squarely at the typical email user. Systems administrators wishing for guidance on stopping spam will find little here that they don't already know.
Some of the advice, like blocking messages from an undesirable sender, is of limited use. Only works against a spammer who has not forged the sender line. This has been an enduring problem with spam. Likewise, the book offers advice on analysing the header trail. But again, the spammer can control [forge] much of the header data.
There is good advice on the opt-in and opt-out mechanisms purportedly offered by several sender companies. Mainstream companies will indeed honour your requests. Good. But, as the book explains, a spammer can turn your request against you, since she now knows that your email address is valid and actively read, which increases the value of it to her.

one to pay attention to
By Charles Oriez
ISPs should buy this book in bulk and mail it out to every new customer. Then they shouldn't turn on the customer's connectivity until they've passed a test on the contents. If they actually did that, users wouldn't make the silly mistakes like responding to remove instructions to verify their addresses for spammers.

I thought I knew everything there was to know about spam, but found myself changing things on my system even before I had completely finished the book.

For someone without the time to read the whole book, I'd suggest reading chapters 2,4,5,12 and the one for your specific email client. If you haven't picked an email client yet, and are among the 95% of the world running a windows desktop, I agree with his recommendation to use Eudora. They have a free sponsored version with reasonable filtering. Get the spamnix plugin, learn procmail if your ISP lets you use it, and you're most of the way home to a spam free mailbox.

And never, ever respond to remove instructions. It proves that you have a valid email address, that you will read a spam to the bottom to find the remove instructions, and are gullible enough to believe anything a spammer tells you. Spammers love people like that, because that's the kind of person that may actually make them a buck someday.

Great Resource For Quick Learning of XML
By Robert Hall
Even though this is the previous edition, I found it to be a thoroughly detailed, yet simple introduction to XML. I like a book that does not take it for granted that you already know something. I also like a book that explains why what it is about is important, and why I would need or want to learn it. I know basic XML, but I always learn something I didn't know. Even though the book is over 1000 pages, I got through it in two weeks, and Since I bought on Amazon I purchase the book for $3.21- Can't be beat. My comapny website will be easier to code and maintain since I read this book and made use of the basic principles in XML. I highly recommend this book, or the 4th edition!

Very helpful for programmers who need to understand XML
By Charles Smith
A very helpful combination of "workbook" and technical reference written for programmers who are object-oriented, dynamically HTML'd and JavaScripted, but not so XML-ly.

What I learned at home, I immediately applied at work. This book lays out XML, chapter by chapter, with each author serving up a specialty layer of information which "cognates" the XML jig-saw into a more complete picture.

Being "hands-on" with a DOS Editor and an Internet Explorer icon will help. I found the "Try It Out" examples and the "How It Works" explanations to be meaningful and practical exercises. Especially in the chapters covering well-formed XML, XPath, XSL and the Document Object Model (DOM).

I can also now appreciate how XSL stylesheet transformations were explained only after the authors first described Namespaces and the XPath language, both of which are critical (as I found out) to understanding and using XSL stylesheets to "transform" your well-formed XML document into an IE web page or an Excel spreadsheet.

I haven't had the opportunity to use the Web Services chapters yet, but now I know more about "Web Services" and how XML plays a role.

I recommend this book to techy, programmer types who want and need to expand their skill sets. But, keep in mind, this is a math book, not a novel. You have to work the exercises, then analyze them before you can put them to use.

The best book on XML and related subjects
By Aramaki
Looking at all of Wrox books that are currently on sale, this is the most well-written and most useful one. And among the XML books out there, this is one of the top three. Better than O'Reiley's XML In A Nutshell 3rd Edition at teaching the beginners how to get started on XML, and explains the concept clearly. Covers DTD and Schema along with other XML related applications. Usually books written by multiple authors are a pain in the neck to read, the difference in writing style would simply confuse you. But not this one. If they tell me that all chapters are written by one single author, I'd belive them.
