A nice try

The book is a good attempt to discuss nutrition and weight loss but over-simplifies the complexities of metabolism into a simple formula: Calories ingested - calories expended = net calories (used from fat if negative, gained as fat if positive), for every 3,500 calories lost that is one pound. Ah, if life was that simple!

First, not everyone uses calories the same way. If they did, you would not have people converting food into fat at different proportions relative to each other. Some people make and store fat easier than others. Some people have slower metabolisms, others faster. Individual differences are not considered in detail.

Second, excess intake is not considered when estimating the benefits of reducing calories. For example, if I eat 100 calories fewer per day, I am not going to necessarily going to loose a pound in 35 days. If I regularly eat an excess of 500 calories per day and eat 100 fewer calories then I simply gain weight at a slower rate, I do not loose any. Moreover, this math assumes intake and calories expended and metabolic rate are consistent over these 35 days. Not so in real life.

I hoped for more mechanistic theory about when and how various calorie sources are used. How does eating protein versus simple carbs versus complex carbs versus fats at night affect my metabolism when I am sleeping? Eating fruit before bed causes a lower waking blood sugar that not eating fruit before bed. Eating protein before bed influences the body to prioritize rebuilding muscle while I sleep, whereas fats and complex carbs influence energy storage as either fats or glycogen or both.

I got a little tired of the joking and sarcastic humor by the first half of the book and annoyed by it towards the end of the book.

All the good things state below are all still true! These are my only criticisms.

Buyer beware - The CD is missing

According to both the book itself and the description in the Amazon site, this book comes with, a CD-ROM packed with valuable weight loss tools, including a customizable weight-loss journal; the food group pyramid shopping list; a behavior/food calendar; a daily exercise chart; a menu planning guide; and more", but the books that Amazon has in stock (at least the two they shipped to me) do not have the CD.

I have called Amazon and asked them to correct this but their agents did not take my complaint seriously. They offered me to give me my money back but they did not want to give me the complete book with CD as advertised or to investigate why the CDs are missing.

Overall a good resource

Weight Loss Kit for Dummies is an overall good starting resource. The book covers a lot of ground. It doesn't get too technical and seems to be pretty update on what is going on. There a lot website references in the book to help learn more. The book covers fad diets, several of the commercial weight loss program like Jenny Craig and how they work, the high protein diet, the high fiber diet, and the high carb diet. There is also a pretty good section on nutrition. I do have to say that after following the advice in this book I am losing weight.

I've made >20 visits to France all together. Here are my reviews of the best guides....to meet you r exact needs.....I hope these are helpful and that you have a great visit! I always gauge the quality of my visit by how much I remember a year later......this review is designed to help you get the guide that will be sure YOU remember your trip many years into the future. Travel Safe and enjoy yourself to the max!

Frommer's

These are time tested guides that pride themselves on being updated annually. Although I think the guides below provide information that is in more depth or more concise (depending on what the guide is known for), if your main concern is that the guide has very little old or outdated information, then this would be a good guide for you.

Lonely Planet

Lonely Planet has City and Out To Eat Guides. They are all about the experience so they focus on doing, being, getting there, and this means they have the best detailed information, including both inexpensive and really spectacular restaurants and hotels, out-of-the-way places, weird things to see and do, the list is endless.

Michelin

Famous for their quality reviews, the Red Michelin Guides are for hotels & Restaurants, the Green Michelin Guides are for main tourist destinations. However, the English language Green guide is the one most people use and it has now been supplemented with hotel and restaurant information. These are the serious review guides as the famous Michelin ratings are issued via these books.

Fodor's

Fodor's is the best selling guide among Americans. They have a bewildering array of different guides. Here's which is what:

The Gold Guide is the main book with good reviews of everything and lots of tours, walks, and just about everything else you could think of. It's not called the Gold guide for nothing though....it assumes you have money and are willing to spend it.

SeeIt! is a concise guide that extracts the most popular items from the Gold Guide

PocketGuide is designed for a quick first visit

UpCLOSE for independent travel that is cheap and well thought out

CityPack is a plastic pocket map with some guide information

Exploring is for cultural interests, lots of photos and designed to supplement the Gold guide

MapGuide

MapGuide is very easy to use and has the best location information for hotels, tourist attractions, museums, churches etc. that they manage to keep fairly up to date. It's great for teaching you how to use the Metro. The text sections are quick overviews, not reviews, but the strong suite here is brevity, not depth. I strongly recommend this for your first few times learning your way around the classic tourist sites and experiences. MapGuide is excellent as long as you are staying pretty much in the center of the city.

Time Out

The Time Out guides are very good. Easy reading, short reviews of restaurants, hotels, and other sites, with good public transport maps that go beyond the city centre. Many people who buy more than one guidebook end up liking this one best!

Blue Guides

Without doubt, the best of the walks guides.... the Blue Guide has been around since 1918 and has extremely well designed walks with lots of unique little side stops to hit on just about any interest you have. If you want to pick up the feel of the city, this is the best book to do that for you. This is one that you end up packing on your 10th trip, by which time it is well worn.

Let's Go

Let's Go is a great guide series that specializes in the niche interest details that turn a trip into a great and memorable experience. Started by and for college students, these guides are famous for the details provided by people who used the book the previous year. They continue to focus on providing a great experience inexpensively. If you want to know about the top restaurants, this is not for you (use Fodor's or Michelin). Let's Go does have a bewildering array of different guides though. Here's which is what:

Budget Guide is the main guide with incredibly detailed information and reviews on everything you can think of.

City Guide is just as intense but restricted to the single city.

PocketGuide is even smaller and features condensed information

MapGuide's are very good maps with public transportation and some other information (like museum hours, etc.)

Rick Steves' books are not recommended. They may be an interesting read but their helpfulness is very poor. They don't do well on updates, transportation details, or anything but the first-time-tourist routine and even that is somewhat superficial on anything but the mega-major sites.

I would have been lost without this book.

This guide offered everything I needed for my trip, from exact prices on everything, colorful maps, and exciting coverage on everything going on in the country. It also covered all the historical, artistic, and cultural treasures in France. With ratings and reviews, I was able to choose a hotel and restaurants with ease. This book is all you'll need to get around in France!

Maps need A LOT of work

Since I've been to Paris several times, I primarily bought this book to get updates on the restaurants and hotels around town. What we noticed is that the Frommer maps for these are HIGHLY inaccurate. In one case, we walked a half-hour to where a restaurant should be, based on the map, only to find out that it was actually over a mile away (and less than three blocks from where we'd started)!!!

I'd highly suggest a different guide if this is what you'd be using it for.

saves room in your fridge!

My husband and I received this book for our wedding, and 4 years later we still love it. All our other books yielded 4 servings in most recipes, and we would end up with piles of tupperware containers in the fridge holding leftovers that inevitably went bad. We have tried all of the entree recipes in the book and love them. There are also a lot of recipes for soups, salads, and even some sandwiches food that is easily portable. My husband is the cook in our house- I rarely cook, and am very much a beginner, but all of these recipes were simple enough for me. Yes, there is a lot of chicken, but I don't know too many people who don't like chicken! And yes, there are a lot of vegetables too- but you're gonna be looking a long time for a recipe book without chicken or vegetables. If we didn't want to eat chicken or vegetables, we'd go to McDonalds.

A great gift for Newlyweds

This was my husband's choice when we went shopping for cookbooks together. I grew up in a big, hungry family with no idea how to keep cooking for two people interesting. I don't have to worry about leftovers or the results of reducing a recipe's servings. Now I can watch our calories by making small portions of guilt-causing foods such as biscuits or Eggs Benedict. The Honey Lime Fruit Salad is so easy and tasty that I have doubled and quadrupled the recipe for groups.
This may not have the best recipes Betty Crocker has to offer, but it has the best collection of usable recipes for couples that I have seen. This is an excellent book to give to someone of any average cooking level who feeds a small crowd. I would give this to a young person moving out on their own and any Newlywed couple.

Everytime I cook something from this book my husband loves it -- just once! No more leftovers! You can through out your Tupperware and start cooking the right amount for two. The ones I've tried have been really tasty and healthy too; the portions aren't skimpy either. I like that the nutrition info is so clear.

A lot of good information!

Zig Ziglar has out done himself once again in coming out with this great book on Network Marketing. I am a great fan of Zig's sales and motivational tools and this book is no exception. The book covers an in-depth look at compensation plans, handling customers, being a leader, etc. The only true flaw is that this book lacks the insight on informing new recruits of the MLM pitfalls they are bound to encounter. It also skips over the exact "how-to"'s of handling objections and doing presentations. Plus this book is not "simple" enough or easy to "duplicate" for the new recruit. It's just too long!. If you're looking for a book that covers the essentials of "how" to succeed in MLM, may I suggest: "Your First Year in Network Markting" by Mark and Rene Reid Yarnell, instead.
Bottom Line: Don't get me wrong, this is a great book for people who want to know about Network Marketing, and with just a little fine tuning, would be the best book ever!.

Should be: How to be a dummy in network marketing

I have always been a fan of Zig, that is until this book. What ever happened to Zig's own Network Marketing Company? That's right it went under. Not even the marketing power of his name could save it and now he wants to tell you how to build a solid business? Zig is a great sales trainer and motivator but it's evident from this book that he didn't have much hands on experience in this business. At one point he says that you should be proud of being in the "sale profession" and then in another part he says the Network Marketing isn't about sales. Network Marketing is a legitimate business not a get rich quick scheme. Unfortunately too many people sell it as the latter and this time Zig goes along. As a seven figure earner myself I would recommend other sources like Leaders Club, for honest information about what it takes to really make it big in this business. If you want a great Ziglar book get, "5 Steps to Successful Selling."

5 Reasons not to buy this book!

I have read hundreds of books on networking, hundreds of books on business, hundreds of text books and at least 5 novels. I met Zig when I was 18, he told me something that changed my life (it's in the book). The concept of this book is simple (thus the Dummies title), if you want to grow your group, this is the one. It is loaded with great information. Now the 5 reasons: 1. Don't but it if you want to spend the next 5 years trying to figure out the industry. 2. Don't buy it if you want to spend the next 5 years trying to figure out people. 3. Don't but it if you want to make every mistake and learn your own lessons. 4. Don't buy it read it and do nothing. 5. Don't buy it unless you have a dream of where you want to go. It's my book of the year!!!

Typical "for Dummies" Pap

I purchased this book because I was scheduled to do online training through WebEx. This book was absolutely no help at all. It essentially gave a brief exposure to the WebEx system and interface and then filled the rest of the pages with a bunch of nothing.

This is typical of every "for Dummies" book I have seen. My recommendation for anyone planning on using WebEx as a trainer or a student: Don't waste your time or money on this book. You'll do far better downloading WebEx' online training resources.

The only reason I bought this book was that it is the only book on WebEx I could find. I just wish someone had warned me not to waste my money as I am warning you.

A stated in some of these other reviews, you will not get anything from this book that you could not easily access online. I was hoping for some information like a quick reference to icons on WebEx, how to set up and save polls, etc. Nothing like this there. You could write this book after spending about 2 hours reviewing online materials.

One of my friend was reading it and I just skimmed through. Found interesting and bought a copy. Trust me..."Reading this dummies book will make you an expert in webex".

I am a physicist and bought this to review for ...

I am a physicist and bought this to review for a student. Although technically accurate, this book assumes a higher initial understanding of math/science concepts than other CliffQuickReview books that I have reviewed (chemistry and biology), and may not be very helpful to students trying to obtain a basic understanding of physic concepts before taking college courses.

Does more harm than good

I picked up this one when I needed refresher for a tutoring job that I took on recently. I have an advanced degree in physics and have been a teaching assistant at the university level for this type of physics, so I do qualify to review this book.

One of the major reason why I tried Cliff's Quick Review was that I had a very good experience with a couple of their high school math review books, namely geometry and pre-calculus. I was expecting to give me very quick overviews of what I remember learning but have since forgotten about the details. They did not disappoint.

The physics version, however, is an entirely different story. While it does give you a very superficial refresher of equations and concepts on most topics, the discussions are not very thorough and often erroneous. In fact, I became angry reading the authors' very half-baked discussions and descriptions. The diagrams, which to my mind are very important to visually understand physics, are not very meticulously drawn and sometimes wrong. Especially horrendous is the chapters on modern physics (nuclear physics, special relativity, etc.). At times I do not think that the authors even understand about what they are writing. For example, to understand special relativity, it is crucial that one properly identifies which are the observed and the rest-frame quantities, but the authors do not elaborate the point and just write down equations. It is a good thing few high school instructors emphasize those topics that students do not have to learn from the chapters from this book.

Overall, it is very clear that this book lacked proper editing by capable hands. One of those books that should not be recommended.

Not Very Helpful

To help everyone who may be confused about what physics book they should buy let me ask you a few questions.
A. Are you thinking of buying this book to get a full, in-depth understanding of something your book may have puzzled you about?
B. Are you thinking of buying this book to refresh your memory on definitions and basic math equations?
C. And most importantly: Are you buying this book to get ahead in an introductory physics course?
If you answered yes to either A and C, I would advise you to not buy this book for many reasons, but for brevity's sake I will only entertain you with a few important ones. Firstly, this book is meant (though the cover is misleading) for those who are either taking Calculus-based physics and need a quick review on some equations and principles, or for those who are deep into their first college physics course and need a reference book. Everything in this book is condensed to a point that will make unfamiliar information seem impossible to understand. There are very few examples of mathematical problems worked out, and though the book does have a plentiful amount of pictures to illustrate many concepts such as polarization of light, the law of conservation of energy, etc. there isn't much explination of the picture itself. Just about every aspect of this book is written as a conundrum, and in my opinion the author probably assumed the reader would be able to fly right through it, which in my case wasn't what happened.
Secondly, I found the amount of practice problems at the end of every chapter to be a joke considering the amount of material that was covered in each of the 6 chapters. (Classical Mechanics, Waves and Sound, Thermodynamics, Electricity and Magnetism, Light, and Modern Physics). For example, the chapter on classical mechanics covers everything from motion in one and two dimensions to fluid mechanics - subjects that may take up 7 to 8 chapters in a text depending on the book itself. Given this, it is justifiable to say that 5 practice problems at the end of each chapter is hardly enough to help anyone get a full review. Suffice to say there are 30 "final exam" questions at the end of the book but once again, these questions are hardly enough to cover the wide range of material you'll encounter in your physics course regardless of its level of difficulty.
Despite all these shortcomings, the text is good for a quick review of concepts for those in higher level physics. The equations and definitions combined are enough to aid students with study materials and can be put on note cards. I should side with the book in that it is a review book and should not be thought of as a crutch for anyone struggling. Nevertheless, the fact that the book is to the point is what earned the 3-star rating, and I'd have to say that ultimately the book is decent for what it was and the price was very reasonable considering its length of 184 pages.
