This book illuminates the underlying symbolism in Narnia and examines the many parallels between The Chronicles of Narnia and Christianity. C.S. Lewis didn’t dream up a master theological plan and then set about writing fairy tales to fit into that framework. Instead, he simply aimed to tell a good tale. However, because his Christian faith was such an integral part of him, the Christian gospel "came bounding into it." As a result, all the major questions in Narnia are answered by Lewis’s Christian faith: How did Narnia begin? How is sin introduced into the enchanted world? How can traitorous Edmund be restored? A celebration of recognition

Being rather fond of both the novells and the essays of C.S. Lewis reading books on his work often turns out to be a rather disapointing experience. However interesting to a certain extend, most of them do not catch the reader, dryasdust as they are written.

"C.S. Lewis and Narnia for Dummies" is a good exception to that rule. Taking advantage of the proven "For Dummies" concept Wagners enthousiasm for the work of Lewis really is contageous. Appearantly Wagner has read a lot from Lewis. Without falling into the trap of being to over-detailled he uses his knowledge about Lewis to draw the big lines and add just enough extra information to make it interesting for other "fans" without alienating those for whom even "The Lion, the Wich and the Wardrobe" is a totally new experience.

For me, considering myself as a lover of most of the work of Lewis, "C.S. Lewis & Narnia For Dummies" was a celebration of recognition. I can not judge for those who are not into Lewis yet - I do not dare to call them dummies - but I can imagine for them this book is appealing to get lost in the wonderful fantasy world of Lewis or even try one of the many essays Lewis has written. At least they won't be frightened by a writer who is to seriously. Wagner obviously likes to make a little fun about himself making it more pleasant to follow his argumentation. I couldn't read the book without a smile.
"C.S. Lewis & Narnia For Dummies" is a book only to be surpassed by the original work of Lewis himself. In the light of the actual interest for fantasy in general and C.S. Lewis in particular consider this book as a must if you are not familiar with Lewis yet. And if you are, there is a good chance that you will enjoy this book as much as I did.

Glimpse of Greatness

This is a well written and thoughtful introduction to C.S. Lewis. The author walks you thru the life and accomplishments of C.S. Lewis (Known as "Jack" by his friends and admirers).

I plan to re-read the Narnia books, then I will explore some of Jack's other writings.

The second half of the book explores The Chronicles of Narnia, and then discusses some of the deeper writings of C.S. Lewis.

For anyone who wants to better appreciate the writings of C.S. Lewis, this is a great place to start.

I really enjoy using this book as a guide to better understand C.S. Lewis and his life's work.

This book would make an excellent Christmas gift !!

Reacquainting Myself with Lewis

I read "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" when I was 9. I think two years later I read, "The Last Battle." I enjoyed both of them. For a long time, I forgot about Narnia, but when the movie version of "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" came out, I started thinking about Narnia again. I saw the movie and thought it was quite faithful to the book, as I remember it.

Wagner's book helped me reacquaint myself with Narnia. He also showed me levels of symbolism in Lewis' books that I never saw before. In addition, Wagner talks about the other works of fiction and non-fiction that Lewis wrote. One of the most famous works of fiction by Lewis outside of the Narnia series is "The Screwtape Letters" which is a series of letters from one devil to another on the subject of tempting humans. After reading Wagner's introduction to the book, I really want to read "The Screwtape Letters."

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about C.S. Lewis and his books.

Dr. James Gaylord has a dual Board Certification in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine and has been in private practice in Burnt Hills, N.Y. since 1997. His training includes a residency in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine; he also spent a year (1992-93) as chief resident in Pediatrics. He continues to train medical students in his private practice.

Michelle Hagen is a freelance writer and editor and the author of 8 books. She has a degree in literature from Empire State College.

So informative...

As an expectant mother, I had exhausted all the info on pregnancy and wanted to learn as much as I could - while I still had some free time - on what to expect during our baby's first year. This book proved to be an invaluable resource on everything from breastfeeding to bathing to baby poop and beyond! I know I will refer to it often after our baby arrives, and I recommend it highly for expectant and new parents alike.

An internationally recognized expert in the field, Mary R. Burch, Ph.D., lives in Tallahassee, Florida. She is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst who has had her work with therapy dogs featured in U.S.News & World Report, Newsweek, and Reader s Digest. Her first therapy dog was the 1992 Delta Society Therapy Animal of the year. Dr. Burch was the chairperson of the Delta Society committee to develop standards for therapy dogs. D. STEPHEN VOSS, a specialist in voting behavior, is Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Kentucky. He received his doctorate from Harvard University.

Best CLEP Review

I took another reviewer's recommendation and used this as my source of information for the American Government CLEP. To say the least, this book does indeed cover the examination very thoroughly. The topics covered in this book cover exactly what is on the CLEP examination without any other non-essential information (such as local government). There were maybe a handful of questions (out of 100 total) that were not covered on the examination, but IF you truly know the material in this book, you will be able to pass the exam with no problems. For the price and value, it is simply the best.

An excellent concise review of material learned through a whole semester. I used it as my primary source in preparing for the CLEP in American Government. I passed the exam with ease. (I also used the Complete Idiot's Guide to American Goverment as a secondary source)

It works!

I studied the Cliff Notes American Government book and Microsoft Encarta for 2 weeks and got a 68 on the CLEP. This book has got it all covered for you.

That's not to say that all you need to do is read through this book once. American Government is a harder-than-average CLEP (most people score 5-15 points below their usual score with the same amount/intensity of study). The main difficulty lies primarily in the wording of the questions and answers, not necessarily the difficulty of the subject matter itself. They won't just ask a straightforward question with a straightforward answer. You have to be able to pull from your knowledge of several different facts in order to answer one question. Don't go in to the test without all your Amendments and Court Cases memorized.

However, this book is tailored to the point, focusing on all the issues you need to know. It can guide your study and help it to be maximally profitable.

When we sat down to discuss our approach for Bipolar Disorder For Dummies, we considered the audience for the book and decided to address both those who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and their friends and family members. One of the most challenging aspects of bipolar disorder is that although only one person might carry the diagnosis, friends and family members are all affected by bipolar disorder in some way and all play an important role in reducing stress and assisting the person who has bipolar disorder obtain and maintain treatment. 

Both of us (Candida in her practice and Joe in his family) noticed that family members, simply by being uninformed, can unwittingly increase the stress that often triggers a mood episode. The family member who has bipolar disorder is more sensitive to stressors and is the one who eventually "takes the hit" for any dysfunction in the family, and then that person gets tagged as "the problem," which, to say it nicely, sure doesn't help a whole lot. We wanted to ensure that friends and family members are well aware of their roles and responsibilities. By becoming better informed, through our book and other sources of accurate information, family and friends can learn more effective techniques for communicating with one another and building a more effective support network. 

To develop a clearer understanding of what bipolar disorder feels like from the eyes of someone who's living with it, we strongly recommend An Unquiet Mind by Kay Redfield Jamison. Our book is more of a comprehensive how-to manual that discusses the diagnosis and the most effective treatment options currently available. We believe that medication alone is very helpful but often not completely effective, for whatever reason, and we recommend several therapies in addition to medication, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), social rhythm therapy, mindfulness training, and relationship and family therapy. We also discuss alternative therapies, some of which are complete bunk and others of which some people with bipolar disorder have found helpful. By presenting the available tools and helping readers steer clear of ineffective or counterproductive alternatives, we hope to enable those with bipolar disorder and their families, with the guidance of their qualified doctors and therapists, to structure a treatment plan that works most effectively for all involved.

The Perfect Handbook

Written with humor, intelligence and straight forward answers, this book priceless. I have always loved the "For Dummies" format for computer and web design related things but I had no idea it could be so helpful with mood disorders.
It speaks to you in plain english, uses real life situations and common sense answers. It is NOT a replacement for treatment, but it is an EXCELLENT guide to finding the RIGHT treatment, asking the right questions and helping you understand the condition.
If you have biploar disorder or know someone who does, buy this book! It's an EXCELLENT handbook for friends and relatives. Buy one for yourself copies for those you love.

WOW!!! What a great book. I've read so many publications and heard so much from doctors that isn't even close to what this book is about. Mental illness is so hush-hush too it's unbelievable. Every doctor and every mental illness organization should have this book. I have bipolar disorder and everything in this book coincided with me and I could've added to it. Bachelor(cooking clueless) finds help and guidence with book

This book has helped me so incredibly much.
Mainly because i didnt even know the basics.. Terms in such..
The last straw for me was when I screwed up burger helper. I thought "simmer" on the instructions ment high heat. Then 2nd attempt forgot to "drain the meat" which didnt make for very good Fettuchini Alfredo helper :(
This book talks in low level terms.. Explaining Simmer among others. Before I bought this book, i recieved a cookbook for Xmas.. Which was no use to me because I didnt even understand half the instructions. So I was screwing up burger helpers and didnt even know how to make good scrambled eggs.. *sigh*
NOW!! I make probably some of the best breakfast you ever had. My scrambled eggs are nice, soft fluffy just right.. I mix in Chorizo and heat up some tortillas for some Migas.. OH THATS NOT ALL! I have impressed my mother greatly with hommade stew.. Started off with the recipe in this book (Which is very good BTW).. Then migrated from the stove to a slow cooker(crock pot) and now MY MOTHER asks for me to bring her some of my stew(which is sorta developed into a custome recipe of mine). Pot Roasts.. Tacos...Grilling fish.. ect ect...
My kitchen never had the right tools in it to cook with. This books gives you a nice basic economical listing of things that you must have to cook. VERY GOOD INFO.. Also the listings of spices to have on hand, herbs and other stuff. Also even explains how to properly use knives and what knife to use for what! Again but $ wise its reasonable.. it doesnt ask you to go out and spend 300.00 on junk you will hardly use. Its very common sense...
And then safety. Book goes over proper cooking times and temp for various meats and cautions on cooking chicken. It also gives you a very nice chart on how long various foods, leftovers, meats can be stored in Fridge and stay edible. THIS WAS VERY HELPFUL!
Again.. Great book for person who is cooking clueless and needs it.. Like me ;-)

A Dummies' Guide on how to Get it Done in the Kitchen.

Cooking for Dummies is funny, informative, and like all it's "For Dummies" cousins, immediately hands on.
I'll take away one star, only because the opening can be intimidating to a rank beginner who doesn't know the difference between a soufle or a sauce pan. Moreover, as has been pointed out earlier, "Cooking for Dummies" seems to say that one must have or obtain a kitchen far beyond the reach of most new cooks. If that's overly intimidating, it's made up for later, as the book gives simple steps that are all but foolproof. If the beginner cannot afford the costly equipment recommended, the beginner should make do with what can be obtained. However, cooking is like any other craft--the better the equipment, the better the results.
But the recipes and techniques are the highlight and soul of the book. Written with humor, insight, and a firm remembering of the intended audience (e.g. "dummies in the kitchen"), "Cooking for Dummies" is sure to please. The recipes are complete and easy to follow; the techniques are explained so that even a klutz like myself won't lose his fingers while chopping herbs or hard vegetables; and the results are uniformly satisfying.
"Cooking for Dummies" is great reading, easy to use, and will be a favorite for many new cooks learning to use the kitchen for more than storage of beer and chips.

Disorganized, badly edited

This book should have been organized such that a beginner can read through the book in linear chapter order. The beginner should be taught techniques and lessons that can be built upon in later chapters. The text is written like it was teaching someone how to cook, but it is organized by food type!
One chapter lists all the tools, pots, and pans a well stocked kitchen should have -- it even lists tools that appear to not be used in any recipes given. However, a few pages later, a recipe is presented that uses tools not mentioned previously. It presents recipes using techniques not explained until many chapters later -- the forward references (if any) refer only to the chapter thus forcing the reader to peruse that whole future chapter to find the technique referenced. Simpler, one-pot-meals appear later in the book and simultaneous recipe preparation meals appear earlier. C'mon. The title of the book has the word "Dummies" in it. It is not friendly to someone who actually wants to learn how to cook.
The writing, even though it was badly organized, was good. The problem was the book's editor. If you are a "dummy" in the kitchen, look elsewhere for instruction.

Very good - little surprised not more reviews

I picked this book up at a store, and would not have bought on Amazon because of the lack of reviews, which I am very surprised about. This books is a very nice review of what you need to know to give a great presentation. Net, covers the major topics, hits on the key points to think about what your audience wants to here. I have read, many, many books on presenting and thought this was very good. Very comfortable recommending.

Love the Dummies books. I know it will be helpful as it is written for us dummies (people who want to know, but can't spend hours and hours going through a long book). Easy to read and helpful for just what I needed - "how to make presentations". Helpful for work and school and personal life. I like the comfort of purchasing on Amazon. I know I can count on them for excellent service and I have never been let down. Sometimes it is necessary to make a return of an item and I like the flawless way that returns can be handled on Amazon. They are without a doubt the very first “go-to” whenever I want to make a purchase. Whether it is a book, or something for my home or office, or an item of clothing I always check for availability on amazon first. When I want to get a gift item and have it delivered directly to the home of the recipient it is truly awesome! I also find it exceptionally helpful when I want to buy multiples of a specific item as I can usually find what I want from one source or from multiple sources.
