About the Author
Christopher Negus is the author of Red Hat Linux Bible (all editions), Linux Toys, and dozens of other books on Linux and UNIX systems. Chris began his career writing about UNIX systems at AT& T more than two decades ago. His work with AT& T included an 8-year run with Bell Laboratories and UNIX System Laboratories, where he worked directly with the developers of the UNIX System V operating system. Later, Chris followed the UNIX source code to Novell, Inc., in Utah, where he helped develop UnixWare documentation and wrote several books on UNIX and UnixWare.

Thomas (“Tweeks”) Weeks holds a BS-EET/Telecom degree from Texas A& M, has worked for several large government and IT/security contractors in the positions of Test and Integration lab coordinator and general sysadmin, sysadmin technical trainer and course developer, as well as electrical and systems engineer. He has been working with Rackspace Managed Hosting since 1999 in the roles of Sys-Admin, Corporate Technical Trainer, and has acted as liaison between customer support/security/product/engineering departments. * Take the responsibility to configure and troubleshoot Linux yourself.

Knowing how to safely deploy a Linux system on the Internet, or debug server software or desktop hardware, can take years to develop. Contributors to the Linux Troubleshooting Bible condense their years of experience into a few hundred pages that will set you on your own road to becoming a Linux guru.

I put together the team of writers on this book to save you the thousands of hours it would take to start from scratch learning Linux troubleshooting on your own. This book contains a great amount of information regarding the troubleshooting of key services like Bind, Samba, NFS, Apache, FTP, SSH, and Sendmail. I found very useful information related to printing services, system tools, and backup solutions. The book contains some key "Tips and Tricks" that seem very useful for the everyday issues I see as an administrator. As and RHCE and experienced system administrator, I found the book very useful and find myself picking up the book very often to review and test some of the ideas mentioned on its content.

Notes on "Linux Troubleshooting Bible"

"Linux Troubleshooting Bible" is another excellent book by Christopher Negus. Although the focus is on the Fedora Core 3, it is still packed with information for the beginner as well as the experienced linux user. The book contains tons of information with excellent examples of commands, just about everything you need to know when using linux. The companion CD's include a DVD with Fedora Core 3 and CD-ROM containing the Debian 3.1 (sarge) release.

I have three "must have" books on linux: 1) "Linux Troubleshooting Bible" by Chris Negus, 2) "Linux Bible" by Chris Negus and 3) "Red Hat Fedora and Enterprise Linux 4" by Chris Negus. You can't go wrong with these books!

About the Author
Joe Surkiewicz has co-authored five titles in the Unofficial Guides series and written two guides to the best places to ride a mountain bike in the Mid-Atlantic states. Joe is communications director at the Legal Aid Bureau of Maryland. He lives in Baltimore with his best friend and counselor, Ann Lembo. When not traveling or bicycling, they enjoy evenings curled up on the sofa with their black-and-white feline companions, Molly and Trixie, to watch black-and-white movies starring 1930s film divas Kay Francis, Norma Shearer, and Miriam Hopkins.

Necessary to have before going to DC

I looked at a number of books dedicated to providing advice for travel to Washington DC. I purchased this one after reading the reviews and reading the sample pages. And I was not disappointed. I found the information here to be very accurate and readable. It provided the basic facts needed to plan a good trip. We spent a total of 5 days in DC, and though I've been there twice before, I relied on the advice from these authors. Never once was I disappointed. If I ever spend as much time in another city that the authors have researched, I will not hesitate to purchase that book as well. Too many first-time tourists whom we met during our time in DC did not have a good idea of what they were doing, and I believe they probably ended up wasting a lot of valuable time in a city that is chock-full of things to do. Several times I was able to make a quick decision in just a couple of minutes by looking the information up by using the handy index.

I do want to mention an earlier review of this book where the reviewer said that the book itself was too big to bring along. That's ridiculous. The book is not much bigger than a paperback and fits quite nicely in a backpack. My advice: Bring this book along with you while traveling around DC and you won't regret it.

Essential guide for your visit to Washington DC

We just returned from a great visit to Washington, D.C. I purchased several tour guides before our trip. We were especially interested in suggestions as to what would be of interest to our 9-year-old son.

This book was by far the most helpful. The book includes great suggestions for your visit to our nation's capitol. Especially helpful to us was that it rated every attraction by its popularity with various age levels (from preschool kids to senior citizens).

You can leave the rest of the books at home, but don't go to DC without this one. And be sure to read it before you go!

Superb Travel Book

Almost perfect DC travel guide. I went to a national chain bookstore and studied
every book they had on DC. The unofficial guide is the best for general info on what to do,see and eat in DC.Good size not too bulky but really concise. Maps and all. I also purchased DK Eyewitness to DC because I liked the idea that it offered floor plans of some of the major sites and color pictures. I highly recommend the
Unofficial Guide.

Windows XP for Dummies does a good job in its role as the flagship of the Dummies line, providing Windows novices with a guided introduction to Microsoft's latest and most feature-rich operating system for everyday computer users. Its treatment of computer, Windows, and Internet fundamentals is among the best on the market, and author Andy Rathbone has an appealing way of writing that's simultaneously fun and detail-rich. If you're a Windows novice--meaning you don't know how to undelete a file that's been sent to the Recycle Bin, or what a Web browser is, or what it means to "cut and paste" text--you will get a lot out of Rathbone's work.

Some aspects of this book could be better, such as the part of the networking chapter that calls for an Ethernet hub without noting that a switch, though possibly more expensive, would do the job better, without any additional hassle. The networking coverage also does an inadequate job of explaining how to share a cable modem or DSL connection among several computers. This is a serious shortcoming, and we're getting to the point in our evolution as a society of computer users at which we can assume that everyone knows what the "Cancel" button does and would rather read about the newer, more exciting things that Windows XP can do. Even the dummies aren't that dumb anymore.

But that said--and Rathbone does confine a lot of the really elementary stuff to a skinny introductory chapter--this book is a boon to people who aren't familiar with Windows XP or its immediate predecessors (including Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me). It's also great for people who have learned a little about Windows on the job or from their kids, and want to expand on what they know. --David Wall

These days, so many people really don't have the slightest idea of knowing how to sincerely operate a computer. With all the hype over which to choose from, there is always one thing they all have in common, the operating system. Most computers today that are being released, are geared towards the Windows XP operating systems, XP Professional, Home edition, and the widely released Media Center editions. Nevertheless, with all the hype of Windows upcoming operating system the Vista, many are looking to buy a computer just to upgrade to the next level. But, if you can't even place your fingers on the button.

Windows XP For Dummies is a very detailed, and diverse guide which mainly focuses on the Home and Professional editions. The book gives a lot in each simple way to operate each part of the operating system from how to configure the taskbars to either the traditional taskbar menus, or the contemporary, sleek Windows XP menu. The book gives tips on how to use each main part of the operating system from the Windows Media Player 10th edition, to knowing how you can simply copy your media onto a blank disc or DVD recordable disc. The book gives detailed words on how to maintain and use each part of the operating system with todbits for anybody who gets stuck in a rough problem. For example, if you find that the computer freezes up, you can simply hold the power button down for a few seconds, and it will manually shut down. You'll also know how to make the backwards compatabilty from programs from previous versions of Windows like 98 or Millenium editions, for efficency on the XP edition where there would be problems.

All in all, I just wish this edition could've done a better job at focusing on the Media Center editons of Windows XP, and gave a few more charts about each part of the operating system. Nevertheless, the Windows XP for Dummies is a still a great buy for any new computer owner. I really am learning a whole lot with this great book, and if you're into a new computer, this is a must buy for you.

Solve all your XP problems

This isn't the sort of book you just pick up and read. This is the kind of book you grab in an emergency and it helps solve your computer problem. Wonderful as a reference on performing tasks you aren't familiar with. I Consider this book a "necessity". Even though I am somewhat computer savvy, this book still is needed for unusual jobs you might not do on a daily basis. If you have an XP computer, you need this book.

Spend your money on another book

I bought 3 study aids to prepare for the NCLEX-RN and this by far was the worst. At first glance this book is great because it has so much material, but after getting further into the book I noticed multiple typos. The spelling typos were one thing, but sometimes the number of the answer did not correspond to the right answer. These typos just took some of the credibility away from the book and made me uneasy. I would recommend the book from Kaplan or the Flashcards from Mosby.

Full of Mistakes!

I have used 4 different resources in preparing for the NCLEX, and this one is glaringly bad. I have found probably 10 or more errors in the practice questions. The question will ask for one thing and then the "correct" answer will be the opposite of what the question was asking. i.e. "What is a sign and symptom of X?" and then you'll wrack your brain and get to the answer and it'll say "1 is the only answer NOT a symptom of X." Some of the answer numbers are wrong as well...it'll put one answer number and then the answer explanation will obviously be referring to a completely different answer choice.

I've already written the company telling them that I've found so many mistakes that I'm questioning the efficacy of the whole book. This was added stress when I didn't need it.

ABSOLUTELY WORTHLESS

This book's questions are nothing like the NCLEX-RN exam I took this week and FAILED, utilizing this book & it's "5 full-length CD practice exams", (which by the way turned out to be just the same questions from the book just mixed up, not additional questions)as my primary source of review. If you're thinking these questions are like the actual test you are sorely mistaken!!! They are WAY easier and will give you false sense of a great review. The amount of typos I found that totally screwed up some of the questions made me a little uneasy. I thought I'd do great on the exam since I did well on the practice tests. Now I get to pay for my exam and fees again, so don't spend the $40 on this book and lose out like I did. Get something else!!!

If it doesn't teach a beginner the basics, how good can it be?

We decided to take up knitting. (I spend entirely too much time watching baseball games; I should at least do something with my hands.) So we picked up Knitting & Crocheting for Dummies at a local craft store. I should have kept walking, instead.

The package includes two sets of needles and a crochet hook. Unfortunately, that's the only justification for this book.

The major criticism is that this book hasn't taught either of us to knit. I flipped through the pictures and the text, and somehow didn't feel inspired to try. My husband sat down with the full intention of learning the skill -- and he still couldn't figure it out. (This is a guy who has taught himself woodworking and software programming skills from books, so it sure isn't his weakness.) There are a few drawings, but not enough, and they aren't very clear. He did manage to knit 20 stitches before he gave up on the instructions, but the exercise was accompanied with lots of cussing.

I took two books out of the library on knitting basics, and both of them -- accompanied with plenty of photos -- are significantly better than this purchase.
