Frugal Living for Dummies is NOT a good title. No one in today's economy is a 'Dummy' for trying to live frugal! This book gives hundreds of great, easy to follow tips for living better on less in the "for Dummies" format. A very good read...especially in tough financial times.

I love this Cookbook

My mother gave this to me as a wedding gift and although I have been cooking all my life I have found this to be extremely helpful with things I've always seen my mother make but never thought about how to actually make. It also has a lot of neat pictures about how to do things and includes details about menu planning, setting a table, menu ideas, and how to throw a dinner party. I love this so much I'm also sending a copy to all my friends who are getting married and can't wait to give it to my own daughters as wedding gifts. (my college roomates mother gave her one too and she is also in love with it)

I recieved this cookbook as a wedding gift and I just loved it. This book is for someone who is just starting out to learn how to cook. It has recipes for desserts, entrees,breads,smoothies, and even mixed drinks. It explains how to organize your kitchen and what every utensil can be used for. There is even a section of ideas for table centerpieces. This is a great book for yourself or a gift for someone.

Wonderful Gift To Give Or Receive!

My wife and I received the Betty Crocker Cookbook: Wedding Edition as a wedding gift 5 years ago. It was the previous edition to this one but this one is also fantastic! I was not an experienced cook when I got married but this book has taken me a loooong way. I still pull it out often to get recipe ideas and to double check converstions, and yields and equivalents. Its recipes are many and they vary in skill from basic to fairly in depth. It also includes basic cooking knowledge and skills. Highly recommend getting it as a gift for any soon to be married couple!

About the Author
John R. Marler, MD (Bethesda, Maryland), a board-certified neurologist and stroke researcher, is Associate Director for Clinical Trials at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. He is a fellow of the American Stroke Association and recipient of the association’s Feinberg Award for Excellence in Clinical Research. He has been administering clinical research in stroke since 1984. He completed his neurology residency training at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and graduated from West Virginia University Medical School in Morgantown, West Virginia.

I got this book late in the game. I wish I would of gotten this book when my husband's stroke first happened. it explains things pretty good. from when a stroke 1st happens to all the stuff afterwards. another good book is High Blood Pressure for Dummies. My husband loves to gamble so he obviously loves the chapters of this book that reference the casinos and the actual games played within casinos. I, on the other hand, enjoy the other face of Las Vegas which includes the shows, shopping, restaurants and good deals. This book was such a helpful purchase for both of us.

Two thumbs up to the author...

Being given the task of constructing an intranet for our company's service desk felt a bit daunting, but then being advised you're going to use Sharepoint 2003 (which I'd never heard of) just added to the pressure...

My initial reaction was that I needed to get "one of those books for dummies" on Sharepoint...I've never really liked reading and am still not the biggest fan, but Vanessa made it easy in the way she set out "Microsoft SharePoint 2003 for Dummies". You have the option or reading it from cover to cover, or jumping to the section that you're currently having an issue with. A real well structured and informative book.

After you've finished reading comes Q&A time...yes, if you have any questions for the author, she'll respond within a few days and be as helpful as she can...forget those geeks and professors that think they're high and mighty that they've written a manual or textbook, Vanessa is down to earth and will take the time to address your questions...I was semi-shocked when I received my first response, but then to receive a second, third and fourth blew me away...

So, for all you beginners out there, or even those that just need a point of reference, this book is a must for your shelf...

Being a Beginner and having to teach myself how to use Sharepoint, I was stymied by many of the technical books on the subject. Finding Sharepoint for Dummies helped alot! Vanessa Williams book is easy to understand and answered many of the questions I couldn't find answers to anywhere else. I still have a lot to learn about Sharepoint and Ms. Williams has been very helpful to shed extra light on difficult problems. Thank you very much for all your help!

I've often said that a good Dummies book allows me to get a broad understanding of a product or technology so I "know what I don't know". This title is a classic example of that... Microsoft SharePoint 2003 For Dummies by Vanessa Williams. It's a non-threatening use-focused coverage of SharePoint 2003 that is a good introduction to the topic at hand...

Williams goes after two different audiences here, and I'm surprised she pulled it off. She targets the average power user who might have access to build a site on the SharePoint server. With this book in hand, I would agree that a motivated person could do quite well on their own. She also targets tech people who want an overview of SharePoint so that they can get started quickly. Normally you can't mix those two groups and come out with something that's acceptable to either. Again, I think she actually succeeded. If I were going to start building SharePoint sites for a user base, I'd have enough information here to get started with an adequate mental framework of how it all fits. I'm sure I'd quickly need the "1000 page book" (as she puts it) to start pushing the boundaries of what's possible. But for basic "I need something now" sites, I could do it with the help of this book.

I was also impressed that she dealt with the cultural issue of collaboration software. As a long-time Notes/Domino developer, I know and understand all too well that collaboration isn't something you can mandate or force on people. People who get it will gravitate around the software right away. Those who view information as power will horde it and refuse to participate. And it doesn't matter how good of a developer you are or how slick the site is. The application will fail... By addressing these issues, Williams sets a realistic picture of what to expect if and when you install SharePoint.

Keith D. Dickson is an associate professor of Military Studies at the Joint Forces Staff College, National Defense University. He earned his Ph.D. in American history at the University of Virginia and is a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Special Forces (Green Berets).

Great Book, Terrific Writing Style - A Must Buy for Everyone

Dr. Keith Dickson has provided us with a well written, easy to read book on the Civil War which is a must read for everyone - to include history addicts such as myself. This inspiring book is an exceptional tribute to our soldiers and leaders and the sacarifices they made for our nation. Keith Dickson has written an inspiring, sad, educational, and fitting tribute of ordinary people placed in extordinary situations. His insightful writing weaves the inspirational story of the Civil War into easily understood sections, which permits the reader to start and stop at easily defined areas.
This book captures the essence of the battles, the thinking of the leadership, the mood of north and south, and the deep division which occurred. The histories themselves are brutally honest and moving. There are no false notes; the book is as much a testimony to the dignity and heroism of its subjects as it is to the horror of war. This is not your typical "dummies book" but a strongly felt and well-written entry among a spate of books on the Civil War. I highly recommend this book for everyone and promise you will not be disappointed.

The Civil War for Dummies

What began as a way to find out a little more about the Civil War has turned into a full blown passion. And what book do I thank for that? Well actually there are two. While reading Carl Sandburg's three volume bio on Abraham Lincoln, I realized I need to know a little more about the Civil War. So I borrowed a copy of "The Civil War for Dummies" and was hooked.
Because I read this book, it stirred in me an intense interest and desire to know more about the CW. Now I belong to a CW Roundtable in my area and I'm studying on my own different aspects of the CW.
It is a wonderfully easy book to read and get the very basics of the Civil War. From there one can move on to some of the classics.
I highly recommend this book for a beginning view of the CW or as quick reference guide.

It talks about such thing as Blacks who fought as Unions and Confederates as well as the Secession of an Indian territories as well. Also read U.S. History for Dummies and World History for Dummies both of which were Awesome!!! By the way did I mention that I hate to read?

Extremely Useful and Well-Written!

I am currently an Anglican/Episcopalian exploring the Catholic Church, likely to be received soon. I have an extensive background in Scripture, Church History, ancient languages, etc. Yet as I began to explore the Catholic Church I realized that I could tell you quite a bit about St. Thomas Aquinas' understanding of transubstantiation, but I didn't know something as simple as when to cross myself at Mass! I also didn't know the official differences between mortal and venial sins, the ins-and-outs of papal infallibility, or the difference between a sacrament and a sacramental. This book helped me understand all of these things and then some. My point is that virtually anybody can learn a lot about the Catholic Church from this book, even those who consider themselves fairly knowledgeable to begin with (like cradle Catholics).
The style is easy-to-read, straight-forward, and the advice and information is always based on official Church teaching. So it is not a good place to go if you wish to join the Catholic Church because you like the stain glass windows but don't want to accept Church teachings. This does not mean the authors cover up or gloss over difficult issues. They clearly admit how some popes were awful, and they have harsh words for the minority of priests who sexually abuse children. They do put these issues in perspective, pointing out that the papacy has a better record than most secular leaders, and the sinfulness of Peter, who was still chosen as first of the apostles. They also compare molestation by priests to molestation within families, showing that within families it is far more rampant (without excusing bad priests' behavior!). These are fair and balanced assessments in my opinion. This is not an apologetics book, although it does go to some length to show the Faith in a positive light. While strict apologetics books (Protestant or otherwise) often leave me cold, this book was a delight to read.
I read this is an entire weekend, and felt prepared to visit a Catholic Church for the first time in years. In addition to using this book, I would recommend reading the Catechism, using The New Saint Joseph People's Prayer Book, and reading the early Church Fathers. The Faith of the Early Fathers by William Jurgens is a three volume set with excerpts from the Fathers. Scott Hahn's works are also recommended. Personally, I would say the best way to get a glimpse of the Catholic Church is to visit a Mass (but don't commune until you are a member!). Ultimately it was worshipping and praying with the Church that convinced me that Catholic was the way to go. Overall, Catholicism for Dummies is a good introduction to the Catholic Church, and tells you everything you really need to know in a concise and enjoyable way.

Better to be a Dummy than an Idiot

'Catholicism For Dummies' is far superior to the 'Complete Idiot's Guide to Catholicism'. The former gives you objective data on what Catholicism officially teaches, how it worships and how it works as an institution. The latter dressess up opinion as if fact and dishonestly injects dissident theology where readers are actually expecting and deserving accuracy and authenticity. I found CFD lightyears better than CIGC in content and layout. The book is not supposed to be about aberrations and deviations among renegade Catholics, rather it is supposed to present and explain a two thousand year old religion which presently incorporates a billion members. I found this book easy to read, enjoyable and informative. Had I wanted to read politically-correct, opinionated and hidden-agenda propoganda, then I would buy the Idiotic version.

Solid Introduction/Foundation

As with other "Dummies" titles, "Catholicism for Dummies" gives the reader a good introduction to the topic at hand. It doesn't get pulled down by extensive, excessive theological arguments or apologies that can confuse or bore the average reader. Instead, it offers a brief but thorough explanation of all things Catholic. From rosaries to charismatics to papal infallibility, it's covered here.
The information is presented in an easy to read, easy reference style. You learn why Catholics do certain things and why they don't do others. You get the Church's stand on certain major issues such as abortion, homosexuality and family planning.
This is a good book to introduce any non-Catholic to the beliefs of the Church. It also gives cradle Catholics a refresher course on their faith. I highly recommend this book for RCIA candidates and catechumens because it offers the Church's teachings in a quick-read format and can answer many questions for interested people. I wish I knew about this book when I was going through the RCIA process.
Another good introductory book to the Church is "Why Do Catholics Do That?" It's written by Kevin Orlin Johnson and is available here on Amazon. If books don't provide enough answers, attend RCIA classes, talk to Catholic friends, or talk to the local parish priest. These are all good resources for answers about the Church.
However, if you want a full explanation of the Church and her flock, get a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It can be difficult to read, especially if you are not familiar with many Catholic terms, but it provides an extensive and concise description of the Catholic Church. Reading the Catechism with the Bible will give you an even deeper understanding of the Church.
In summary, get this book as a starter. You can pick a topic of interest and read about it, or read the book from beginning to end. Either way, this book will answer most of your questions about Catholicism.
