Orlando advice-good, Disney-not so much...
By Julie
If you are getting this book for the information on Orlando and surrounding parks then I would give it 4 stars. When it comes to Walt Disney World, it feels as though this book was written by someone who indeed lives near Disney, but doesn't love it or understand it. The author suggested that you skip the classic Carousel of Progress because it is a snooze! I have to travel to WDW to see it because it was removed from Disneyland. Also, It's a Small World was used in the 1964 World's Fair and then relocated to Disneyland. The one at Walt Disney World was created specifically for that park. Within the first 15 minutes of reading this book, I found multiple factual errors. As a 30 year old kid, I enjoy taking a flight with Dumbo (always have), the book suggests that you not take children over 6 to the attraction as they will not want to ride. I don't find this true ever. I have been a Disney Tour Guide and have known true Disney fans of ALL ages. If you want the entire "Disney" experience than don't take the advice in this book experience things on your own and make the decision. I have taken into consideration things that have changed between 2005 and now, I do not consider those to be factual errors. Historic basis is something altogether different. Perhaps the current versions of this book cater more to the true Disney fan.

Note from the current author
By Michelle Snow
Hello! Please read the previous reviews with the knowledge that they were written for older editions of this book, written by different authors. I've lived next to WDW for ten years and this edition was rewritten to exclude any previous errors. I'd appreciate it if you'd judge this edition on its own merits. If you've read this edition, I'd appreciate your comments and reviews. Thanks!

This book was as interesting as it is helpful. It had a few pointers in it that the others didn't. The post-it notes come in handy to mark the items to re-read or remember before you leave on your trip.

Best Guide for Traveling Ireland
By shoutgrace
I've tried different guides and I found I come back to the Frommer Guide. It contains more information that comprehensive and complete. Except maybe a few omissions. The [dollar amount] a day guide is handy for the thrifty traveler. It will help you find affordable accommodations and restaurants. My suggestion is if you're in Dublin be careful of some high prices. Sometimes it's best to check with the Tourist Board for the local budget fare. Most of the best bargains I found were by exploring the city. Most low prices are in the pubs and near the Temple Bar area. All the other places around Ireland are fairly reasonable. The guide contains lists of maps with two color city and regional maps, plus a large pullout road map. Also has tips for the best places and activities, and planning an affordable trip. All prices may vary though due to the High Season (Summer-higher prices) or the Low Season (Fall-Winter-lower prices). So the prices in the book is not always a reliable source. You may want to inquire. The book is sectioned by each county in the Irish Republic including Northern Ireland. Each attraction and establishment has description, address, contact and road information. There's a handy appendix to get an in-depth look at Ireland's history, folklore, music and food & drink. This is just about everything you need for a memorable and inexpensive trip.

extremely helpful!
By Amazon Customer
i would recommend this book to anyone planning on traveling to ireland on a budget. the price comparisons from city to city are extremely helpful, as is the recommendations on areas to avoid if you're trying to avoid overly-touristy destinations. recommendations for low-cost travel agencies are accurate and helpful as well. my only gripe was the lack of photographs to give an idea of the places the book is describing, but the information more than makes up for the lack of images.

Basically Good Guide, But A Couple of Misses
By Lizzi
This guide gives you pretty much what you're looking for in a guide... it lists the sites, gives recommendations on what you should see and miss, it also gives detailed information on how to reach where you're going by car, rail, bus, or plane. It's very similar in material and detail to the Lonely Planet Ireland guide... the difference, though, is that this guide has more information on activities such as walking, bicycling, birdwatching, swimming etc. where available. You should know two things, however that may sway your decision about this guide: #1) Absolutely no pictures.. if you need a guide with tons of pictures, get the Eyewitness Guide along with either this one or Lonely Planet to fill the gaps in the Eyewitness. #2) I was hoping for more recommendations for budget lodging. It usually only has a handful per town.. and some are not that reasonable. If this is because there are no cheap accomodations in most of the towns, that's fine. But the book IS called Ireland from $60 A Day, afterall. Maybe it should be called Ireland from $60 A Day, If You're Lucky and Go In the Off Season, But Really Be Prepared to Much Spend More Than That, Especially in Dublin. OK, maybe not. Hope this helps!

Very Helpful!
By Dorset, VT Resident
I have been playing golf for several years now and have been lucky enough to have a caddie on most of my rounds. However when I play at a course that does not have caddies I get some of the 'rules' mixed up. This book is so helpful ... if I know I am not going to have a caddie I will do a quick read of the rules before I go out to play just so I dont get stuck on trying to remember what the Rule is when I need to know.

Rules light
By D. Walsh
This book contains dated material. As of january 1, 2008 the Rules and the decisions of golf have been substantial changes. All of then good and many of them will come into play every day. Also, the author references 5 dumest interpretations and goes on to state that Rules officials should not be so strict in interpreting the Rules. While that may be a nice thought, the realities are that the writers of the Rules (The USGA and The R&A) put enormous thought into the way the rules are written so that Officials in the field can uniformly interpret the rules. The Officials have no room for error in ensuring that all players are playing by the same rules and playing on a level playing field. It is an interesting book, just don't make any wagers based on what you read inside. If you really want to understand the rules purchase the publication: Decisions on the Rules of Golf from the USGA.

Long on etiquette, short on rules
By Bob
I was looking for a book to explain the rules better, and this wasn't it. It went into lots of details about etiquette, tipping, how to play with your boss, etc.. The author expresses lots of personal philosophy about why you should walk, why you should use a caddy, and all about betting. The rules section was a short discussion that didn't elaborate on the USGA handbook much.
The stories are enjoyable, especially the one about the Chairman at Augusta National offering to cut a deck a cards for a loudmouth gambler's entire 40 million net worth.
This is one to borrow, not to buy.

The Only Las Vegas Book You Need!
    By Kris Wilder
The Unofficial Guide to Las Vegas, 2000, is the only book you'll want to read when planning your trip. It goes into great detail about all the hotels and casinos, what their rooms are like, what the hotels offer, what the casinos offer, and lots more. It tells you how to obtain "comps" and how to play the games, with easy to understand rules and diagrams. With their 100+ pages of Dining and Restaurant information, you know where to find the best food and the best prices. The Hotel Information Chart in the back is extremely helpful because you can compare hotels without having to flip through a lot of pages. Chapter 5 talks about shopping and the sights around Nevada, in case you plan on doing more than gambling. The Unofficial Guide gives you the pros and cons of each show so you can decide wether or not it's worth 100.00 a person, to see Siegfried & Roy at the Mirage. There is also a little section that tells you where you have the best odds of winning at each game, and at which casino. Another great thing about this book are the maps of The Strip and of Downtown. It lets you know how far you are from point "A" to point "B", because hotel properties are deceiving in their size. A walk from your room at the Venetian, to Caesars Palace may take 20 minutes or so. All 544 pages are packed full of helpful and accurate information. The Unofficial Guide made planning our trip extremely easy. I highly recommend this book, and only this book, to anyone planning on going to Las Vegas!

Excellent - Buy it if you do not have a recent version
    By A Customer
We originally bought the 1996 version of this book before our first trip to Las Vegas. We used it as a bible of sorts. We found its reviews to be on target. The authors are not afraid to give advice on where not to go and what not to see. It rates hotels, casinos, restaurants, shows and about anything else you could want rated. It also provides the basics of gambling and even gives tips for planning your trip. We have since made Las Vegas our adult vacation spot, a place we go without the kids once a year. We always bring the book and read it ahead of time. We decided to get the latest 1999 edition prior to the trip we are taking in about a month. The book has only minor changes since 1996 and does not have much of anything on any new hotels which opened after New York/New York. The shows information is pretty much identical to the 1996 edition, save a few new shows. My suggestion is to buy the book if you do not have a fairly recent edition. It will more than pay for itself with excellent advice. It also helped us save about a hundred dollars by giving suggestions on booking the trip. If you have a 1996 edition or newer, you really don't need it unless you have worn your other copy out.

    How to DO Las Vegas
    By hyperbolium
Like the rest of the "Unofficial Guide" line, this book tells you how to visit, rather than just what to visit. That is, in addition to fairly encyclopedic information about transportation, hotels, restaurants and attractions, it provides a good deal of useful information about how to get the most out of your vacation.
For example, rather than just providing a guide to hotels, it prefaces the detailed listing with a section discussing the pros and cons of different accomodations. Motel or hotel? Small casino or megacasino? Downtown, the Strip or further out? Similar help is available for picking what games to play and where to gamble, what shows to see (and where to sit), and so on.
This guide provides the sort of "I wish I'd known that" information you gather on your first trip to use on your next trip. This lets you avoid many of the common mistakes your first time out. Obviously a lot of this is subjective, and you won't agree with their assessments every time, but overall their evaluations are fair, and their tips are exteremely useful.

    From Publishers Weekly
Hardened canine criminals meet their match in Evans ( The Evans Guide for Civilized City Canines ), who here outlines methods and philosophies likely to reform a rogue's gallery of aggressive, unresponsive, non-house-trained animals marauding as man's best friends. With his flexible and good-humored approach, Evans teaches how to develop proper leadership attitudes toward a dog as well as how to prevent or stamp out problems. The standout section here is the author's 20-step "Radical Regimen for Recalcitrant Rovers," which has been privately making the rounds of the nation's top trainers with impressive results. Other piquant discussions include rebuttals of folk wisdom, as in an explanation of disciplining a dog after the fact, and clear directions for using set-ups to correct very specific infractions. Some self-help-style chatter invades the book ("I'll be publicly honest with you if you will be privately honest with yourself") but does not detract from Evans's authority. Owners of even cherubic pets ought not pass up this thoroughly sound guide. Illustrations not seen by PW.

Is your dog a candidate for tough love for pooches? If so, you may want to follow Evans's RRRR "Radical Regimen for Recalcitrant Rovers," the basis for this dog obedience book. Evans, who has worked with dogs for 20 years, offers a holistic 20-step program for correcting behavioral problems. Since this is a long-term process, Evans realistically offers no "quick fixes." He says that the key to success lies in the owner being the boss or Alpha dog; otherwise, a positive dog-owner relationship cannot be achieved. Evans includes worksheets to help guide the owner through the RRRR program. If your patrons need another dog obedience book, consider this as a worthy additional purchase. Photos not seen.

    From the Inside Flap
Since man and dog established their ancient partnership by the light of some primordial camp fire flickering in the mists of prehistory, their relationship to each other has changed dramatically. What was allowable canine behavior in an earlier time often is not acceptable in our enlightened age. At first things were easy. The caveman had no furniture for the dog to chew on or rugs to spot. And later, the desert bedouin had the rug, but there was no door on the tent and the dog did not have to be taken out or even housetrained. The Middle Ages saw a rather casual approach to cleanliness, for man and dog alike, and what man did not know about hygiene and health worked against them both. Over the centuries, however, things changed for the better, and today's dog is cleaner, healthier, better trained and more suitably fit for the role we demand of it. But sometimes, just like people, a dog backslides, or it might be improperly trained or socialized, or something just might be missing that puts it on the road to being a problem for its owner. Here is People, Pooches & Problems, ready to help. Written by one of today's most respected dog training authorities, this new book looks at the whole range of undesirable canine behavior and gives the reader a highly potent means for dealing with housetraining, food stealing, destructiveness, barking, aggression toward dogs and people and similar areas of concern. Job Michael Evans leads us to a clear understanding of why dogs respond as they do and shows how to restore a derailed relationship with a dog by correcting problem behavior through his "Radical Regimen for Recalcitrant Rovers" program, a proven means for achieving compliance with "social rehabilitation" that is presented in the author's original style, a bright combination of authority and understanding. This is the book for dogs and those who love them.

One of the finest training books I've ever read.
    By Katy Willson
I've been teaching obedience classes and training and exhibiting Toy Poodles and Miniature Schnauzers in advanced obedience for about 20 years. This book is always the FIRST one I recommend to dog owners who have a dominant or spoiled or aggressive dog.
It is filled with practical, commonsense training methods that work just as well today as they did in our grandparents' days. Dog does good, he is praised and reward -- dog does bad, he is corrected. Perfectly understandable -- both by dogs and by kids.
In my opinion, the people who dislike this book are those who don't believe in negative consequences for anyone or anything. (You usually see the results of this philosophy in their spoiled children.)
"Old-fashioned," they call it. Well, it IS "old-fashioned." And it produces "old-fashioned" good behavior and respect for authority. Good old common sense is what it is, and dogs respond beautifully to it.
Yes, dogs are perfectly capable of understanding positive consequences (petting and treats) AND negative consequences (a sharp word, snap of the leash, or swat on the hind end).
Job Michael Evans' book is just terrific. I have a dozen happy, cheerful, well-behaved dogs to prove it, and as an experienced instructor and trainer, I highly recommend it.

Excellent dog training book. Have a problem this will help.
    By A Customer
I have been dog training and instructing for 14 years. I have not come across a dog book yet that was worth the money they ask for it. I found my copy of this for $5 in a 2nd hand store. I read it and went and bought another two copies to lend to club members that are having trouble with their dogs. Mr Evans knows what he is talking about. The book is well written, with practical advice everywhere. I thought I knew a lot about dogs, after reading the book I am a great deal more informed. If you have a need for a book on dogs I would recommend reading this, it is great.

This book not only provides a nicely detailed background on the dog/human dynamic but includes a vast array of problem-solving techniques. I kept the library copy out so long that I realized I had to buy it to keep as an on-hand resource. The writer, while humane, is no stupid-romantic slob when it comes to appreciating the frustrations and problems even the most beloved dog can bring. Best of all, he puts the emphasis where it needs to be - on the owner who, unlike the dog, is able to examine her (or his) behavior and modify it to help the dog be a better citizen.

What is this book about? "ASP.NET 2 Beta Preview" is timed to coincide with the first widespread beta release of ASP.NET "Whidbey", the new version of Microsoft's popular technology for creating dynamic Web sites that pull unique information for each visitor rather that showing everyone the same static HTML pages. The book gets developers up to speed with the new features and capabilities that ASP.NET 2.0 provides. Developers will learn how to build ASP.NET 2.0 applications for themselves from the examples that the book provides. This book is for ASP.NET developers making the transition to this new version of the technology. The changes are many, and in some cases, they're quite dramatic. The book spends a good deal of time alerting you to all that has changed and explaining what you need to know to make the transition to ASP.NET 2.0. Finally, the book focuses on both the Visual Basic .NET and C# developer. Examples throughout the book do not favor one developer over another. Instead, every example is provided in both languages.

Outstanding overview of V2 for experienced ASP.NET devs
    By Amazon Customer
Bill Evjen, one of the most prolific writers on all things ASP.NET, presents his latest technical literary offering with his overview of the Beta 1 release of ASP.NET 2.0. I've been playing with ASP.NET 2.0 since the early alpha bits, and I got a lot of out of this title.

Admittedly not a primer for the .NET neophyte, Bill dives right into the major changes in the architectural, infrastructure and syntactical concerns facing next-gen web developers. The book is a quick read, containing 16 succinct but not light chapters on the major areas of building and administering ASP.NET web applications. Although the book takes a slight slant towards Visual Basic .NET, nearly all the code samples are presented in both VB .NET and C#.

The book's high points, in my humble opinion, are evident in the "Membership and Role Management", "Personalization", "Additional New Controls" and "Changes to 1.0 Controls" chapters, being an outstanding breakdown of V2's improvements and new features for those respective topics.

Also to be appreciated is a great compendium featuring the new languages shipping with both VB .NET 8.0 and C# 2.0, including new enhancements to both languages like generics, partial classes and anonymous methods. He also breaks down new language-specific improvements, such as VB .NET's new keywords and C# iterators.

In criticism, I would have liked to see a discussion of authoring the revamped custom control development model, which the book didn't cover. But in Bill's defense, that respective programming convention isn't quite finished yet. The only other thing lacking would be more descriptive ASP.NET 2.0 APIs, which is usually a hallmark of Wrox-produced texts (the only area to get such treatment in this title is the WebParts/Portal Framework APIs). But then again, moving towards more declarative programming is one of V2's goals, so this may be intentional.

With the exception of Bill looking a bit harried on the cover, it's a masterful work: well-rooted in the ASP.NET fundamentals while accommodating advanced topics, accompanied by relevant, code-heavy examples, all written in Bill's very appreciated friendly voice, with the right timely intermingling of humor.

Bravo and cheers, Bill! Great work!

For VB users & beginners only
    By D. Riggins
I was unimpressed by this book. MSDN documentation was 10x better, they failed to include any reference to Remote Scripting or Callback methods, they didn't add in any reference of how to use client side script handlers or a number of features you would expect that are included in 2.0. If you want an update to all the past controls that you already know then this is great, if you want to delve deeply into the advanced new features of ASP.NET 2.0 then I don't recommend this. The author also is obviously a VB developer but pads the book by using a generic converter for most of his code, quite a poor display in my opinion.

Beta, Remember Beta, Not Yet a Bible.
    By John Matlock
Note that this is a book based on the Beta release of the software. Usually, emphasize usually, Microsoft Beta software is actually pretty far along and most of the changes from Beta to production are really just bug fixes and not changes in the look, feel, and functionality of the product. But this is not to guarantee that changes won't be included in the final release.

The biggest change I can see in ASP.NET 2.0 is on their approach to eliminate much of the intense coding that ASP.NET required. ASP.NET was quite verbose - doing a program was rather like writing War and Peace, and you had better be exactly right in your spelling, grammer, and punctuation. The goal was to reduce the amount of code needed by two thirds. And it appears that they've accomplished this.

The next major point seems to be that ASP.NET is integrated more closely with the rest of .NET. You use Visual Studio 2005 to build any type of .NET component, including ASP.NET. When microsoft says Integrated Development Environment, they mean it. All of their applications are tied together, some loosely, some more tightly, and the indications are that in the future they will be much more tightly.

All in all, this book is just what it says, a Beta Preview. It presumes some understanding of version 1, and tells you what's happening in version 2. It is amazing to see the amount of access and availability to resources within Microsoft that Mr. Evjen had to produce this book

    HEART OF TEXAS
    By Shannon Deason
These Frommmer guides are very good, and this one on Austin and San Antonio is no different. I am very familiar with these two cities and I find the suggestions in this guide to be on the whole very accurate. Though the hotel and restaurant sections are top loaded with the most famous and expensive, some smaller properties and resturants are not included. The sites section however is perfect, the guides descriptions and ratings are close to perfect. What I really appreciate about the Frommer guides is that you really feel like they have researched the subject, granted that should be a prerequisite in a travel guide, but unfortunitely in my experience that is not always the case.

    Excellent Mini Maps and Suggestions
    By Firebyrdflight
Very helpful--good job of mini maps that correspond to sections of her commentary, good suggestions for where to stay, and a particularly useful map showing the locations of hotels in relation to the sights in town. I've ended up extending our proposed stay in San Antonio by a day based on what I read. Also does a good job of outlying options such as the LBJ boyhood home and so forth. That particular mini map helped me visualize
the way the several area visits relate to each other, and helped me make a good choice of hotel. Thanks, Edie!
