Great Introduction

I'm an amateur (ham) radio operator who's looking for material to use for classroom courses on radio operation, electronics theory, etc. I bought this book hoping that there would be some ideas, and I was pleasantly surprised.

The Dummies series is pretty much hit-or-miss when it comes to utility, but this book really helped. The chapter on Multimeters (Volt-Ohm Meters, or VOMs) alone was worth the purhase price. I'd purchased another book (Getting the Most from your Multimeter) and was sorely disappointed that, once again, the book assumed the reader had far more basic knowledge than I did.

Is it lacking? Sure. If you're looking for some basic electricity fundamentals, this isn't the book. The "Basic Electricity" book from the Bureau of Naval Personnel (a Dover books reprint) is pretty good on this account, since it's used to teach semi-literate 18-year-old seamen a fundamental skill. The book could also use more detail in some areas but, what the heck--it's a Dummies book.

Compared to the "All New Elctronics Self-Teaching Guide" which I also purchased (much to my chagrin), it's great. The Self-Teaching Guide is simply awful as a beginner's book. Admittedly, the Self-Teaching Guide is a text book and, as such, it's assumption is that the reader has some fundamentals nailed down. The Dummies book, interestingly co-authored by Earl Boysen (a co-author on the Self-Teaching Guide), is really a solid intro to the subject.

Really helpful if you are aprehensive about the SAT

There is a lot of useful information in this book. It gets you into the minds of the people who create these tests which is very useful. The problem that students have with the SAT is that it looks like a regular high school test, but a hard one.

The truth is the it is not a Scholastic Math test or a Scholastic Reading test or a Scholastic English test. It is a Scholastic REASONING test. Completely unlike anything the student has ever taken.

It's much more like the puzzles you used to get with the Sunday Newspaper Magazine. Once a student really gets this, the SAT becomes much less threatening.

This book can get you into a frame of mind that will let you do really well on the SAT. You already know everything you need to know to do well on the test. This book can get you to understand that

The best of a bad bunch!

This book really exceeds what has come to be a disappointing reputation for SAT study guides.
Because the SAT tends to be very complicated and detailed as an exam and so most study guides tend to almost TRY to reflect this in the complex layout of their books. This study guide is different from all the rest, as it has a simple layout, a brief introduction with some oh-so-useful tips for both English and Math sections and then it divides each English section into the 3 sections within it (1 analogies; 1 definitions; 1 sentence completion etc) and the same with the Math.
After each of the 6 sections it has practice questions. Then at the end it has 3 practice SAT papers.
This is great; it's really well laid out and it's concise. There's no complicated language to get past from the author (the SAT's language is difficult enough!) and it's not as bulky and long and off-putting as other SAT guides, which are often more difficult than the exam itself. If you need a top grade, there's no book better than this one.

Best SAT prep ever written

This is a great book that makes studying for the SAT fun. Weused it in Mom's Home SAT Prep Course. 20 days before the test, my11th grader read one chapter per night. After she read each chapter,she had to sit down with me and explain the chapter. We went over eachsample problem and the tips. Each night, it took her about half anhour to read the book and half an hour to explain it to me. She alsotook 2 sample SAT exams from the book. She scored only about 1150 onthe practice SATs in the book but on the real SAT, she scored 1320 --and we attribute a lot of it to the help of SAT for Dummies! The best$... we ever spent. Ideal for kids who have good vocabulary and mathskills and simply need to learn the sneaky tricks of the SAT. And momor dad, after this kind of prep course, even YOU could take the SAT!

A good, good book.

Much less useful than I had hoped - 2.5 stars

This book would be great for the person who has no knowledge whatsoever about digital cameras but wanted to buy one and needed to know what to look for and what to do with it in the first weeks after purchasing it. Alternatively, this book also provides lots of details on what a pro or semi-pro photographer would want in his or her studio for doing portraits or close-up macro shots and editing them with an expensive professional editing program. Since I fit in neither category, I found the book lacking.

I've had a basic point-and-shoot 2mp Canon A20 for almost four years but bought a 5mp Pentax Optio 555 with full manual controls and wanted to learn how to use those controls. Sadly, this book really didn't help me that much. If you already have a digital camera, too much of this book is devoted to how to purchase one and what accessories are useful. I know what a megapixel is - I want to know how to take good, interesting pictures.

Several portions of the book tell you about basic photography, but by and large, I found it too basic. For instance, in the chapter on photographing people, the author states that if you want your subjects to have a good appearance, you should be sure they are wearing nice clothes !!??!! Really? There is some fairly obvious text on how to center or frame subjects, but nothing momentous.

Conversely, at the opposite extreme, the author spends too much time discussing how to set up a portrait studio (page after page on lighting accessories) or a macrophotography studio, for doing close-up photos of inanimate objects (such as for eBay auctions). He goes on for pages telling you about what sort of backing to have behind your subjects - definite overkill.

I bought this book hoping it would tell me how to make best use of the manual, aperture priority and shutter priority settings on my camera. It does tell you that the smaller the f-stop, the larger the aperture. It also tells you that to shoot moving objects, such as sports photography, you need a faster shutter speed to capture the fast moving action. But that's pretty basic and self-evident. I wanted to know how aperture and shutter speed effect depth of field, so that I could take great photos of people or flowers in sharp focus, with the background blurred out of focus to emphasize the subject. Guess what? This three inch thick tome does NOT explain any of that. I spent hours re-reading every possible portion of the book that might provide that information, but although it does mention the concept of depth of field several times, the author does not bother to tell the reader how to make use of it with his or her camera. I find that inexcusable. In fact, the author really does not provide much of use about any aspect of the manual controls on a camera, aside from the aforementioned sports photographer's need for a fast shutter speed and the need for longer exposures in dim light. To the extent that proponents of this book claim I should find this information in general, non-digital photography books, I have to ask why that isn't the case with all of the actual picture-taking chapters in this book.

There is a chapter/book on general use of digital imaging and editing software that is moderately useful. I have been doing ok with several programs (Photosuite, Picture It!) just playing around without reading the instructions and after reading this book, I discovered I was missing out on some useful aspects and features of those programs. However there is also a separate book (one-seventh of this entire reference work) devoted to shamelessly plugging the program Photoshop and how to use it. I don't own the full version of Photoshop and given its six c-note price tag, I'm not ever planning on owning it or even the basic version of the program, Photoshop Elements, which is rarely discounted much under eighty bucks. Perhaps I'm speaking solely out of ignorance of its wonderful benefits, but I neither see why Photoshop is so much better for the average digital photographer who just wants to print nice, interesting pictures nor do I understand why 15% of this book is consumed with telling me about a program I'll never own. I agree with the other non-enthusiastic reviewer that these programs should probably be covered in a separate, more detailed primer focused solely on the program you actually own.

Finally, I found quite a few of the author's photos spread throughout the book lacking in value. Some of them simply did not demonstrate well a particular point the author was trying to make (e.g. the stone gargoyle in the rule of threes subject framing section as well as the castle on a hill photos). Quite a few other photographs that were supposed to show the potential wonders of digital photos were simply not particularly interesting.

I'll conclude with the best advice on digital photography books that anyone can give: plan on spending some reasonable amount of time in an actual bookstore reviewing not just this 7-in-1 Dummies book, but several others too. I wish I had. Look to see if you agree with several of the points I've made or that other reviewers of this book have made. Look to see if there is substantial text in the book that addresses the areas where you have questions or need more information. Read some of it carefully to make sure that it makes sense to you and the author's writing is clear. Then, make up your own mind. Finally, don't hesitate to make some use of the internet, though, because some of the best websites of any sort that I've seen online are the digital photography websites - especially (...) - they really are exceptionally useful reference sources. Last but not least, enjoy your digital camera.

Everything you need in one book!

What a great extension to the Dummies concept! I love Dummies books, but always finished each book wishing there were more information. This "All in One Desk Reference" has that information! It's two or three times the size of a typical Dummies book at 800 or so pages, and it's all meat. Everything you need to know about digital photography and basic image editing is in here.
The emphasis on photography, rather than digital technology, is refreshing. Certainly, there are chapters on how digital cameras operate, and guidelines for choosing a digital camera. But the center of the book has solid chapters on good old fashioned photography, as it applies to digital cameras. There's a chapter on composition, one on close-up photography, another on sports photography, and a great travel photo section. The thick section of color photos are great, too. It's good to see color images in a book about color photography.
The sections on image editing are fairly complete and will get beginners started and more experienced people trying some new things. Both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements are covered, but there is a chapter that evaluates most of the popular image editors and compares and contrasts them. This book really is thorough.
However, if you want to buy this book, purchase it for its great coverage of digital photography. That alone makes this the leading digital photography book. The other chapters make it a useful "All in One" reference book.

Good for review!

Although I have yet to take the AP Statistics exam, this book has certainly helped me in class. Our textbook (and our teacher) don't really do a thorough job in explaining the concepts. Often, before tests, I will look up a section in this book and learn how to do it from Cliffs!

There are a lot of AP Stat books out there, but they all cover a different assortment of material. Although I cannot guarentee that this is the material one needs for the exam, I know that it explains it THOROUGHLY. They have plenty of example problems that are worked out in ways so that you can follow along each step. I find the example problems and questions the most helpful part of the book. They also give very detailed free response, which is great for practice.

Wonderful resource

I used this book a lot during the past school year. I taught statistics for the first time and needed some extra help. This book was wonderful. It has great examples and easy explanations for various topics. I recommended this book to my students. Many bought the book as well to help prepare them with the Advanced Placement test. Thanks for such a good book.

Really good review for test and class

This book does cover all the topics necessary for the AP Stats exam. It provides easy and through examples and questions at the end, with allt he answeres explained. Its really good for the class too because it review important concepts and if u dont get something, then just look into this book and it should give u the answere. Its practice questions are close to the actual exam. THe book also will refresh your memeory of any topic and gives you tips on not falling into ETS traps.

Viruses and More

The one thing about viruses that I've always wanted to know: why do people want to write and propagate virus programs. Surprisingly he does make some comments about virus writers, not to specifically identify them, but to give some history and general comments. I don't know that this was a help, but it's at least interesting.

Beyond viruses, this book also goes into other forms of nasty programs like Trojan Horses, HiJackers (that replace your home page with theirs), worms, Phishing Scams, and Spyware. I'd have liked to have seen just a little more about some of these, such as an evaluation of the anti- software that is available.

Like all the For Dummies books, this is a good introductory book, not the final word. But if you have a computer connected to the web, you'd best be paying at least some attention to Viruses, and this is a good start.

Good Value Book

While this book is a very good value with the price, and at 292 pages it is by far worth it. However before reading this book, I did read this one Computer Security: Keeping Your Computer Safe with Virus Removal too. It is priced a lot lower, and still gives most of the same information.

Both books do a wonderful job discussing the history of computer viruses, how to get them off your computer and how to prevent them from coming back in the future. Guess it just comes down to what you want to pay versus how easy the reading is to understand, and how easy the instructions are to follow.

Both books are easy to read and understand. This one however is a bit wordy, and little more technical. Might be hard to understand for some readers that are a little less "techie".

About the Author
About the Authors Reid Bramblett is the author of Frommer's Tuscany & Umbria and Europe for Dummies as well as coauthor of Frommer's Italy from $70 a Day. He also helped found guidebookwriers. com (see chapter 2). When not on the road, he splits his time between his native Philadelphia and Columbia, Missouri. Londoner Richard Jones, author of Frommer's Memorable Walks in London, has been devising walking tours of his city since 1982. He has written the books Walking Haunted London and That's Magic, as well as the script for the drama-documentary Shakespeare in London. He has also written and presented drama documentaries about Shakespeare in London (1999) and Jack the Ripper (1997). All four of Joseph S. Lieber's grandparents emigrated from Eastern Europe at the turn of the 20th century, settling in New York City, where he was born and raised. Mr. Lieber lived in Hungary for several years in the early 1990s. He presently practices law in Boston and is the coauthor of Frommer's Budapest & the Best of Hungary and Frommer's Europe. Christina Shea served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Hungary and subsequently directed Peace Corps language-training programs in Lithuania and Kyrghyzstan. She's the author of the novel Moira's Crossing (St. Martin's) and a coauthor of Frommer's Budapast & the Best of Hungary and Frommer's Europe. Herbert Bailey Livesey is a native New Yorker. A freelance writer since 1964, he has long contributed to this guidebook and writes detective stories as well. Sherry Marker's love of Greece began when she majored in classical Greek at Harvard. She has attended the American School of Classical Studies in Athens and studied ancient history at the University of California at Berkeley. Author or coauthor of a number of guides to Greece (such as Frommer's Greece and Frommer's Greek Islands), she has published articles in the New York Times, Travel & Leisure, and Hampshire Life. She began contributing to Frommer's guides while helping her husband, John, better understand his new home in the Czech Republic. George McDonald has lived in Amsterdam and Brussels as a former editor of the Sabena Belgian World Airlines and deputy editor of the KLM Royal Dutch Airlines in-flight magazines. Good for the cities included

Just returned from a 2 month trip using the 2002 guide. I found the recommendations for the restaurants to be excellent. After realizing that the Frommer's writers and I had the same tastes, I made it a point of seeking out all of their 'starred' recommendations for restaurants. The sightseeing descriptions and recommendations were also quite good. The hotel recommendations were not as good. A few of the hotels we stayed in that were not 'starred' or listed as a 'Find' were not as comfortable as hotels in other books.
We traveled with this Frommer's, Rick Steves, Lonely Planet and Rough Guides through France, Belguim, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Hungary, and Italy. We liked Rick Steves' recommendations for lodging, Frommer's for restaurants and both for sightseeing. Lonely Planet and Rough Guides were not used if in a Frommer's city. If in a Rick Steve's city (but not Frommer's) we used Lonely Planet for restaurant recommendations (not as good a Frommer's but better than Rick Steves).
Background: Two travelers, professional, early 30s with enough money to stay out of the hostels, but did not want to blow the bank of 5 star lodging. Rick Steve's packing philosophy. Both traveler's love to eat!!

Frommer's 2001 Europe : From $70 a Day

I recently returned from a 3 month tour of Europe and took this book with me. While it did have a number of major European cities in it the actual information about them was definetly lacking. I found my self usually better off with out a book at all as opposed to only having this one. Several other travelers we met felt the same way and some were lucky enough to have Lonely Planet guides. For the money spent I'll stick to them or Rick Steves in the future. i.e. This book would take you to the train station/ subway but then fall short on what the heck to do to get a ticket!!! Which is important information stranded in 20 different stations/ subways a month each with different customs. Frommer's did do an excellent job of pointing out all of the gay and lesbian districs and bars in each city and the gay friendly hotels and shops... but they also have a strickly gay guide to Europe as well. The amount of space used for this information could have been better allocated for more pertinent information. I'll have to give a thumbs down on this book. Take something else with you or take nothing at all.

Capitals only

Frommer's does a good job with the general hints on travelling cheaper, but unless you plan on visiting only the major cities and capitals only, look for another book. There are 24 major cities and surrounding areas covered from Ireland to Budapest, but that's not many cities in comparison with all of Europe. I only will have a short time in Europe and that means that I will only be able to visit two of the cities listed and have to use another book for everything in between. Lonely Planet is much more inclusive and definitely covers the lower price scale.

Lovely Northern New England

Frommer's guidebook provides an excellent overview of the sights to see, things to do, and places to stay in the three Northern New England states of New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. The overviews are very accurate and provide a good description of the places, making the book an excellent way to decide where to go in the areas, and a good guidebook once you arrive.
The biggest problem with the book is that there is not enough individual descriptions of each area. Chances are most tourists are not visiting several regions in all three states, but are choosing one or two to explore in-depth. For example, I went to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park in Maine, an area that was given around 20 pages of coverage. Therefore, more research on the specific areas you plan to visit will probably be necessary to help you get the absolute most out of your trip!

Seriously Disappointing

I took this guide, 2008 8th Edition ( note the other reviews for this guide are very dated), along with Fodor's New England 2007, on a 10-day tour through New Hampshire & Maine. NORMANLLY, Frommer's does a very good job of guiding you to best that either a country (or state) has to offer. NOT this guide. This guide is seriously disappointing.

Yes, the guide does cover the tourist site, and like all of the major guides (Fodor's, Footprint, Rough Guide, Lonely Planet, Moon) it will point you to the "must see" places. Also, to be fair, WHEN it does list a restaurant or hotel the guide does a fairly decent job describing the place. BUT, what really set guides apart are the quality and quantity of their accommodation and restaurant recommendations. These recommendations, along with the author's writing style and the interesting sidebars filled with tidbits (this guide has none) make or break a guide.

Frommer's is dismal when it comes to restaurant recommendations. Dismal. For example, New Hampshire's largest city, and the largest city of northern New England, Manchester, has only two (2) restaurant recommendations. Two! It has one (1) accommodation listing. For New Hampshire's State Capital, Concord, there is one (1) restaurant recommendation and it is vegetarian!

Skip to Maine and if you look for restaurants or accommodations in the city of Bangor you won't find any listed. IN FACT Bangor (Maine's third-largest city) is not even mentioned! HELLO. Who in the heck is editing this guide?

I could go on about the pathetic maps, lack of statistics (population, altitude etc.) but really, save your money and get either Lonely Planet New England 2008 or Fodor's New England 2007 (strongly recommended). This guide is not recommended.

We bought this book for a summer trip to Vermont with our family with kids and found the guide not very helpful for finding things to do or places to eat in Vermont. It is more geared towards ski season.
