Amazon.com Review
Owning Weight Training for Dummies is like having two knowledgeable and entertaining personal trainers into your home. The authors, Liz Neporent and Suzanne Schlosberg, authors of the popular Fitness for Dummies, are both fitness professionals who walk (lift, run, bicycle) their talk. They explain the basics of weight training simply, then take you through every step to setting up your own program and doing it properly. Whether you have free weights (dumbbells and barbells), a home machine, or access to a gym with many machines, you'll get an introduction to safe and effective weight training, plus descriptions, technique, and illustrations of dozens of exercises designed to target all major muscle groups. And just in case this is the only fitness book you buy, the authors include some information on cardio exercise, stretching, and other exercise options. Best of all, the book is motivating, easy to understand, and fun to read.

This updated edition of Weight Training for Dummies includes a few new chapters: "Yoga and Pilates" and "Improving Your Balance and Coordination," both in the "Beyond the Barbell" section; "Advanced Weight Training Exercises"; and a few snippets of new material (such as the addition of "Don't dress like a porn star" in the "Weight Training Etiquette" chapter). Otherwise, it's pretty much the same book. If you own the first edition, there's probably no need to buy the updated version. But if you don't own the first edition of this handy and cheery guide already, and weight training is not yet a part of your fitness program, the second edition of Weight Training for Dummies will teach you exactly what to do and how to do it. --Joan Price

Great Book...missing stuff though
By A Customer
If you are starting out, this book will give you the basics (as the name implies); the excercises are very well explained and the fundamental facts of weight training are here. However, if your goal is to obtain body mass and really define your body, and I'm NOT talking about going overboard or looking to win a body building contest or anything of that sort but simply looking good, then I would look elsewhere. This book is for the VERY beginners or for people who want to excercise without really "building", and just want to be fit and have a light but useful workout.

Great for beginners...
By M. P. Procter Sr.
but I really needed the next level. Don't get me wrong, it's a great book and is loaded with information. Unfortunately, the first third of the book was basic, like "this is a weight" and "these are barbells." The last third didn't really involve weight training at all, but talked about yoga and Pilates.

The sections that covered actual weight training and exercise routines was very good, but not as in-depth as I would have liked. It seems to me that "Fitness for Dummies" should have covered the stretching and yoga. I would have liked to seen more on just weight training.

But, if you've never - and I do mean never - been exposed to weight training, then this book is for you.

Everything you need to get started
By Anthony O'Krongly
I read no less than 3 books when I start a new endeavor. For weight training (a year ago) I started with 6. After working out for a year I think this book is everything you need to get started and continue to improve. The other 5 books I bought sit unused a year later, this one I still refer to and read. It's well written, easy to read, entertaining and wonderfully organized. I like most how it tells you everything you need to know but does it efficiently. The authors didn't just write for fun.
One thing I didn't agree with is that a home multi-gym should cost $1000 or more (which is what the book says). I bought mine for $300 and I don't think I'll ever need another one. There are quality home weight machines available for $400 and less EVERYWHERE.

Not worth the money
By Abalas Olpo
This book has an annoying trait of explaining super basic things as if you had no knowledge of computers. It tells you step by step how to add a project. Select File -> New -> etc. Which is fine if all material is covered with this detail. But it's not. The harder stuff is, or this stuff that's is impossible to arrive at with clicking, is glossed over.
For instance, there's a section that tells you how to use Crystal Parameters with values entered in a textbox. A very useful thing. The explanation is laborious on how to add components on the form but when he gets to the code part, he says, "You can now use this code to set you parameter fields" No mention of where this code goes. How could they assume you've never turned on a computer before with the Select File -> New bit and then assume you know where this code goes.
It makes this book useless. It's one of things that is just infuriating. Who do they think the audience is for this book? If you know VS you know how to add a project, for Christ's sake. If you know Crystal you know how to make parameters. The reason you buy this book is to see how the two work together.
WTF!

Lacks consistency in explanations...
By Terrill Talley
I agreed with many of the prior reviewers when they stated that the book doesn't cover many options and in some examples they are covered completely and other examples jump around and lack the same "follow through" in the lesson as the prior examples. I also found that included screenshots were not consistent as well. Often when I was expecting a screenshot because the explanation given in the text was not so clear, no screenshot existed. In Chapter 3 the author has you use an example from Chapter 2 and in the SubReports section, the correct example could not be found. I found the example stated in the text but it did not contain the example shown in the screenshot.

In my opinion, when I purchase a book to learn a new software application that is 1) expensive, and 2) difficult to figure out, I expect consistency in a text this way I come to know what is expected by the person teaching. This book lacked that. If I had been somewhat knowledgeable with Crystal Reports prior to reading this text, it might be a different story altogether, but that wasn't my case. Final note, the author doesn't state what .NET code he will be using. I came to find out that its VB.NET, unfortunately for me I'm a C# programmer. I figured it out but I probably wouldn't not have purchased the book if I had known that from reading the covering or book description.

Look for another book
By SomeGuy
I found quite a few mistakes. Does anyone review these books? The "chapter " on Web Services was particularly poor. I suggest looking for any other book on Crystal and .Net.

excellent information except NO pictures
By A Customer
Unlike Frommer's Caribbean Cruises and Ports of Call 2003 which is 736 pages, this is only 320 pages - the right size to travel with. You don't need info on each cruise line while you're on the cruise.
It's great because it tells you exactly how far the town is from the pier and whether it's worth spending $3 on a taxi. Tells you which islands it's best to take an organized tour. Also lists name/phone/web of trips/activities offered by local agencies. Tells you which beaches are overcrowded and frequently by pickpocketers.
Includes walking tour of San Juan, PR with map. If you're spending more time in Miami, buy a separate book. Restaurants are also mentioned as well as hotels in ports of embarkation.

What a GREAT Book!
By E. M. Hunt
I looked at 9 different books before choosing the Frommer's Guide. I picked this one over its competitors because it had more pages dedicated to the Ports we plan to stop at than they did. I was really impressed with how well the book was laid out, how much information there was on each port, the excursion advice, and the suggested easy walking tours at each port. The book has already saved us $120 each on our cruise excursions.

Ports of Call don't plan a cruise without it
By J. Page
This book gives great information on how to get the most out of your cruise. This is the second Port of Calls book, that I have brought. It goes with me on all my cruises. I find the sections on best shore excursions and activities near the port most helpful.

Chemistry for Dummies
By van
Entering a Chemistry class which is a requirement for my RN degree worried me. I was worried that because I had not taken a chemistry course in high school my grades would be hindered. This prompted me to check Amazon in search of a solution. I decided to purchase Chemistry for Dummies. It is amazing how just skimming through this book familiarized me enough in Chemistry lingo to understand my class. I highly recommend, "Chemistry for Dummies". vaf

This came in handy for my college course but didn't have little things that I needed. I'm not much of reader but most of the concepts talked about in this book really made it simpler and easier to understand. I passed my chemistry class with the help of this and I would recommend it.

Great if you dont have a degree in business
By Frank Polanco
As I wrote in the title of my review, this book is intended for people like me who has almost no knowledge or skills in business. I say this because I have a degree in civil engineering, and from that point of view I can say that for competing in a tough market full of changes, you at least need to have an idea of what you'll be facing and how to face it, and for that matter you have to be prepared. I'm not saying that this books says it all, instead it tries to give you a new mentality and a good approach for facing the challenges that can turn your ideas into disasters.

When I first saw this title I had no idea of the meaning of the word "Entrepreneurship", cause I'm a spanish speaker, but more important is that I was getting ready to read "business plans for dummies", but then I realized that in order to succeed I not only needed a terrific business plan, also I needed to have that way of thinking I told you about. But this book is not only about acquiring a new mentality, it is also very technical cause the book develop within it chapters the basics of doing something very very important that I realized not many people know about, which is doing a feasibility analysis. This should be the first step before starting to make a business plan, cause no matter how good your plan is, if a business is not viable it will fail anyways.

Finally, I have to say that starting businesses is not an easy task, you'll not only need an open-creative mind, you'll also have to be strong-objective for not getting other peoples opinions or your own desires get in the way, cause otherwise your efforts wont mean anything.

Entrepreneurship for Dummies
By C. Ray Carlson
It's perfect for my needs in teaching middle school, high school and college youth how to start a business and to write a business plan. They rarely have any idea as to the possibilities for them to become entrepreneurs and be their own boss. The one lack in a book seven years old is that it could not cover the new technology of the Internet and the 'social networking' opportunities for marketing products or services, i.e. MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, etc. But this kind of information is available all over the Internet.

Didn't meet my needs
By epl53078
I guess I bought the wrong book. This book started from scratch, as if I didn't even have an idea what kind of business I wanted to start. That certainly wasn't my case-I'm starting a video game company, I've got a team, we have a concept, and we know how much it will cost. All we have to do now is make it more attractive to investors, which, sadly, this book focuses very little on.

If you are wanting to start your own business just for the sake of starting a business, this book is for you. It has an entire section on going through the decision making process of what kind of business to start, researching how to make your product the most marketable it can be during the design process, etc., and will start you on your way.

If, on the other hand, you are like me, and you already have a great idea, and what you want to do is create the business for the sake of promoting that idea or product or whatever(which I suspect there are more of us out there than those described above), then this book will not serve you. It has very little in the way of acquiring capital-in fact what little it does have is better covered in the book "Raising Capital for Dummies,"(which I also own), and even still, most of that is focused more on how to cut your costs, or telling you that most entrepreneurs use their personal savings without any helpful hints about what to do if you're already living paycheck to paycheck and have no savings, nor does it really present feasible options if you've already reduced your expense projections as low as they can go without compromising the original concept.

All in all, I think those most likely to buy a book called "Entrepreneurship for Dummies" are unfortunately not likely to be served by the material covered in this book. I suspect those who want to create a new business just for the sake of creating a business already went to business school, have a business degree, and already know the capitalist principles covered here, and those that don't have all that background are only interested in creating a business to make their idea succeed, in which case they don't need an entire third of the book devoted to deciding your concept based on market research and then another third to tell you you're going to need to use your personal savings that you don't have to begin with.

    Deja vu all over again
    By A Customer
Ok. So I have no immediate plans to visit Disneyland
Paris, but, as a committed Disneyphile, I decided to
check this one out, to see if, if and when I DO
someday go to Paris, it would be worth a visit.
Now, I don't know for certain how identical DLP is to
Walt Disney World, but from the guidebook, you would
think they were virtual clones. While DLP has a few
unique rides (which get their own, original descriptions),
most of the ride descriptions, and the guest comments,
are lifted directly from the other guidebooks. Isn't it
AMAZING that a mother visiting DLP with her son had
EXACTLY the same experience on Dumbo as a mother who visited
WDW a decade or more ago? Much of the other information
(advice on visiting with kids, planning your day, understanding
traffic flows, meeting characters, etc.) is also reprinted,
virtually word for word, from the other Disney guides.
Of course there is some unique information. The hotels and
restaurants are described (the latter very briefly indeed -- 3-10 lines per restaurant, with no real description of the food, and only the most general indication of cost); you can apparently buy cigarettes in the park in Paris, and the few rides unique to DLP are described. (Interestingly, he doesn't seem to care for most of them.) He also gives basic information on getting to Paris, finding in-town hotels, and so on.
But most of it is just a tired rehash. Instead of giving us
a generic "DisneyX" book, why couldn't he focus on what makes
DLP different from the other parks? I'd guess that most readers, at least most American readers, have already been to either WDW or DL, and already know the basics. They are not going to be planning a trip to France JUST to take Junior to DLP as their first visit to a Disney park.
If Sehlinger REALLY doesn't want us to
go to DLP (he doesn't like most of the unique rides; the few rides for which he mentions differences from the U.S. version [for example, the French "Haunted Mansion"], get a poorer review here, and he thinks the food is lousy and overpriced) why not just say so, and save us the cost of the book.
OTOH, if you've never been to any Disney park, and never read a
Disney Unofficial Guidebook, this might be of some use.

Very Very Out of Date and Oddly Negatively Opinionated
    By RonAnnArbor
Having just returned from Disneyland Paris, I can tell you that the ONLY thing this book got right was the information about how to get on Space Mountain just as the park opens to avoid the lines.
This is old, outdated information. The author apparently has bias that he doesn't like thinks European intruding on his Disney experience. In MY experience, this is the most beautiful of the three Disneyland Parks (I have been to all three) and the unique rides are terrific. The food is actually quite good at some of the restaurants in the park (the author thought they were tasteless and overpriced).
More seriously -- this information is so old, it doesn't even include Disney Studios or the Village...the Village has now been there for years and the Studios have already celebrated their first year anniversary. What a great park that needs some mention somewhere.
Finally -- and most disconcertingly -- I wrote a 20-page updated information letter to the author after my visit almost a year ago -- no thank you, no response, as if he doesn't even care to incorporate changes.
I do NOT recommend this guide -- but if you go to one of the stores that has the book, take it with you to the coffee shop area and thumb through it for a basic (OUTDATED!) overview.

    Disappointing
    By A Customer
This is the worst guide to DLRP. The author clearly hasn't done his homework and judging by the misinformation concerning the newer attractions must not have visited the place at all in the past ten years. His descriptions of the Indiana Jones ride (ie that it runs forwards and then backwards through a loop) and the Canal Boats (he says there is a guide cast member on board each boat)are just plain wrong. At the very least a purchaser should be able to expect such information to be factually correct. Do yourself a favour and give this one a miss.

    What is this book about?

Beginning Web Programming with HTML, XHTML, and CSS teaches you how to write Web pages using HTML, XHTML, and CSS. It follows standards-based principles, but also teaches readers ways around problems they are likely to face using (X)HTML.

While XHTML is the "current" standard, the book still covers HTML because many people do not yet understand that XHTML is the official successor to HTML, and many readers will still stick with HTML for backward compatibility and simpler/informal Web pages that don't require XHTML compliance.

The book teaches basic principles of usability and accessibility along the way, to get users into the mode of developing Web pages that will be available to as many viewers as possible from the start. The book also covers the most commonly used programming/scripting language — JavaScript — and provides readers with a roadmap of other Web technologies to learn after mastering this book to add more functionality to their sites.

    Great teaching book
    By Robert
Great introduction to front-end web programming using XHTML and CSS. It even gets into the nitty-gritty of SEO strategies, rating your site for child access, testing methods, and accessibility for the visually impaired. Also provides a good, although brief intro to JavaScript, database driven websites, and programming for mobile devices.

Yes there is a lot of repetition and a bit of wandering back and forth across subjects, and yes it can be annoying. But most books in this genre are guilty of that. This one is no better nor worse than the others. Nice reference and appendix. Recommended.

    Very thorough page turner
    By B. Warrick
For being a technical book, this was a very nice read. Similar to other Wrox books that I have read in that their basic format is a thorough explanation of a subject, then a "try it out" where you are able to implement the subject, and finally a "how it work" where the "try it out" is explained.

In addition to teaching html this book goes into other parts of web programming including CSS, JavaScript, and XML. The two chapters on CSS are informative but I would suggest a book dedicated to the vast subject. Each chapter for JavaScript and XML are more of an appetizer to wet your appetite for a more thorough dedicated title.

Could have used some color, especially the HTML color appendix. I would also suggest, if it becomes possible and soon I would think it should, getting an updated addition of this book. This information is certainly up to date but there is much "errata" or errors. One must visit the Wrox web site to gather these "updates" to ovoid confusion. Also, there are several errors not covered in the errata that even I was able to discover. This, however, is part of reading technical books. I don't think anyone purchasing this title is looking for a literary gem.

If I had it to do over I would still get this book. If I lost it I would replace it. And you do stop getting creped out by the author's picture staring at you after a few days.
