About the Author A North Carolina native, Darwin Porter has lived in South Carolina and Georgia and explored extensively in the region's major cities and backwoods hamlets. He was a bureau chief of the Miami Herald at age 21 and has written numerous best-selling Frommer's guides, notably to France, England, Italy, and the Caribbean. He is the coauthor of Frommer's The Carolinas & Georgia, working with Danforth Prince, formerly of the Paris bureau of the New York Times. Could get most of this information for free

I did not find this book any more helpful than the Charleston Area 2003 Official Visitors Guide that I ordered for free on the internet (I'd give you the url, but it's not allowed, so do a search). It did offer information on hotels, which the free guide did not. However, the free book gave more information on local events, tours, and sightseeing. This book is not worth the money, get the free one!

Quickly outdated

I teach internet searching to senior citizens. I thought this might be a great book, but I was underwhelmed. A few observations:

- Google is changing so quickly and frequently that no printed materials stays current for very long.

- Lots of the "tricks" are so specialized, you would never use them.

But, as it says, the instructions are simple to follow - and that goes a long way!

The "Read less-Learn More" Visual series from Wiley Publishing suits this reviewer just fine. These books, usually priced under $20, are chock full of great information presented in two-page spreads featuring full-color screen shots.

Google: Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks is the latest in the "Read Less-Learn More Visual" line and it is a keeper. The concise, step-by-step tips and tricks, are on side columns and connect to the screen shots with arrows. It is very easy to follow. Each tip features a meter showing the difficulty level. Almost all the tips introduce a new skills or task or combines multiple skills requiring in-depth knowledge; 2 and 3 respectively on a 4-point scale. At the bottom right of each spread are tips and trivia such as: "Try This", "Did You Know?", and "More Options!".

The author, Joe Kraynak, writes in an easy-to-read style and he often provides examples which you can follow through the screen shots and accompanying tips. The screen shots are from Microsoft Internet Explorer's browser and only the toolbar differs from those of other browsers (I use Mozilla) but don't let that bother you.

Google: Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks is organized into ten chapters each of which contains ten tips or tricks (Kraynak keeps it simple). The chapters are: 1) Maximize Google Search Options; 2) Search for Images, Video Clips, and Other File Types; 3) Tap the Power of Google's Reference Tools; 4) Enhance Your Browser with Google Tools; 5) Get Your News Through Google News; 6) Explore the Local Scene with Google; 7) Save Money with Google's Froogle; 8) Read and Post Messages in Discussion Forums; 9) Create and Maintain Your Blog; 10) Explore the Power of Google Labs Tools. One chapter that I found intriguing was on creating one's own Blog. I had no idea that creating a blog was relatively easy and there are helpful tips on how to keep it current and attract readers.

Those of us who are Google afficionados will appreciate Google: Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks as it will help you be more efficient and productive. I found some of the tips to be quite elementary but there is good information for any level Google user. My copy has sticky tabs sticking out the side to mark helpful tips. Computer books can be pricey but this full color, well designed and produced book is a real value at less than $20.

Linux Bible Nearly Useless

I am very disappointed with the Linux (2008 Edition) Bible. It is basically a fluff volume (800+ pages of fluff) that provides little help in trying to use Linux. Best comparison I can think of is: You buy your first car, and with no practical knowledge of cars, have a flat tire on the way home. You look in the owners manual for instructions on changing the flat. The manual says, "there is a jack and lug wrench in the car for changing tires." Nothing more. This example relates to many sections of the book. Take, again for example, "Kudzu Hardware Detection" on page 286. This section states that Kudzu detects your system hardware each time you start Fedora. Okay, so what if it doesn't? Not a word on how to make it run, how to make it detect hardware, or what to do if it fails to detect. This lack of real information is repeated throughout the book. A (very) brief introduction to topics but nothing that is remotely useful. I feel I really wasted my money.

Latest Negus Linux text

I taught from Negus's Fedora Core 3 book for several semesters at the local Community College. I found it to be as good a publication as the one that I'm reviewing now. There is a tremendous amount of information on the topic presented in a readable fashion and should be on the desktop of anyone who needs to support Linux systems and applications.

That being said, however, it is not a text from which to teach people just learning LINUX/UNIX, because of the lack of support materials. If the Negus books provided Instructor materials for preparing and giving College level classes, there would be more sales to the educational community.

Excellent, even while out of date.

While the Linux world develops by the day, and new advances and Kernels are constantly being updated, this book remains a helpful and near essential tool for a beginning Linux user. From the absolute basics to a moderately advanced approach, this book offers a huge amount of tips as to which direction to approach Linux. I would suggest that anyone reading this book actually download and install the most recent distributions rather than installing the outdated ones on the disks.

The author definitely has a strong presence throughout the book, giving a tone of guidance necessary to those new to the operating system.

Though this book is excellent in it's own respect, never rely solely upon it, and stock up on Linux books. If you had to read only one investment book, this one should be it!

This is the single best book for beginner and intermediate-skilled investors. I believe most non-professional investors will find this an absolute gem. The writing is clear and actually fun to read. You will learn the basics of how to evaluate companies, but Epstein includes nuances that even more advanced investors will find useful.

The book is valuable because of its appropriate coverage of 4 separate areas:
1) Teaches the reader basic accounting. For example, what do different items on a cash flow statement really mean and how are they related to the balance sheet or the income statement?
2) Once you understand basic accounting, it teaches you how to manipulate some of these numbers to get a better understanding of how well the company is doing. For example, what is the significance of inventory turnover?
3) Points you to other sources for more information and greater understanding ie: different websites and how to get bond ratings on particular companies.
4) Discusses pitfalls of analyzing financial reports. She discusses how companies manipulate numbers and how you can improve your chances of catching the culprits. She discusses 10 guilty companies.

There are many great books investors should read, but if you were only allowed one then this should be the one. Bravo Lita!

Very good book for beginners in investing

I've stayed on the sidelines for long time, watching the stocks I thought I should buy go up and down. I did not want to jump in without understanding what I was getting into. I thought the 3 Financial documents from a company (Balance Sheet, Income Statement, and Cash Flow) were enough to understand a firm's performance. Boy - I couldn't have been more wrong. After reading this book, I realized how crucial it is to read through the 10-Ks and 10-Qs, and the notes to the Financial statements. That was a definite, very valuable learning for me. This book may not provide much for the experienced investor, but certainly helps you get started on the right foot if you are looking for ways to get started in stock market. Good Luck with your investing endeavors. Cheers!!
