Marketing for Dummies -Some Pearls
By Robert C. Olander
If you are running your own small business and trying to handle all of your marketing effort yourself you will find many excellent tips and words of wisdom that will help get you through various projects while avoiding many commonly made mistakes. If you were in need of a glossary, lists of commonly used acronyms, marketing concepts, or a professional handling of a managerial approach to global marketing you would be better off taking traditional marketing courses and studying your textbooks.

This book was very "task" oriented and included some nice general ideas to remember, and good tips for getting through some common tasks. It is not comprehensive, nor quite as step-by-step as I had hoped a "Dummies" book would be. When I think of a "Dummies" manual I always remember using my old Volkswagens for Dummies to get through giving my old VW a tune-up and valve adjustment. It included step-by-step instructions as well as the nice tips needed for avoiding commonly made mistakes. It took me from the beginning to end of my common projects without any problems. Some of the computers for Dummies types books I have read have also included both step-by-step as well as tips and advice.

Marketing for Dummies was not laid out in the beginning to end, comprehensive step-by-step fashion I have come to expect from the "Dummies" books. maybe Marketing does not lend itself to this, but it would have been appreciated. Marketing for Dummies will make a nice "hands-on" addition for your more complete "traditional" Marketing text collection.

Meh

I recently bought a 5-in-1 weather station and wanted to learn more.

I've enjoyed other Dummies books but found this one too sophomoric in humor and content. I wanted more info. about understanding the weather on my local news and in my backyard. Thus, rather than Top Ten Disasters and sub tropical jet streams, I would have liked more on the basics. Frankly, I considered giving it two stars.

A Reader-Friendly Reference
By Virgil Brown
Weather is a subject that everyone knows something about. However that's just where John Cox starts. So one knows about Doppler radar? How about polar orbiters? So one has always heard the expression "it's too cold to snow?" Is it really?
Of course this is a reader-friendly book. But I will wager that it will soon turn into a handy reference book that is frequently pulled from the shelf.

Reaaly good overview of the CJCLDS
By L. K. Muller
Pros: well written, really funny at times, easy to read and through.
Cons: Paints a pretty rosy picture of the polygamy period.

This is a really well written overview of the Mormon Church, Very through and honest, it gives non-Mormons a clear picture of what today's LDS practice and believe. I have family member who are Mormon and the book is a valuable tool to help understand how they live their lives. The authors don't shy away from controversy, explaining in more detail than I expected the differences between Mormon faith and other Christian churches. I was a little surprised at the detail provided regarding Temple ordinances, while not explaining exactly what is done, the authors explain what the services are and why they are done. Any differences between Mormon and traditional Christianity are explained away by continuing Revelation and that in their view, the LDS church is the one true faith. Not a problem for me, the book is written by Mormons to explain their church to non Mormons.

Given the level of honesty in the book I was a little surprised at the coverage of polygamy. If the authors are correct, most women were very happy being one of several wives. There is a page that tells how many sister wives were doctors, teachers, and other professionals. They do admit that while polygamy is now forbidden by the church the revelation that encouraged it has never been withdrawn, and that many in the church expect that polygamy will be the norm in the 3 levels of Heaven (read the book). In their favor they do admit that during the time of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young girls as young as 14 were taken as wives.

If you are looking for a layman's guide to the Mormon faith, I highly recommend Mormonism For Dummies..

Surprisingly Good Overview of the LDS Religion
By Bombadil
I expected this book to be an overly simplistic treatment that would portray the LDS in any number of odd perspectives. However before getting through 5 pages, I was already impressed by the humor and insight it brought to LDS topics. From that point, it only got better.

In the end, the book far exceeded my expectations. It covered LDS theology and history in more depth, more breath, and more candor than I've ever seen in a summary book on Mormonism. The authors handled sensitive topics, such as temple ordinances, with respect while still providing good coverage. They document some of the warts and bruises of LDS history while balancing them with what I felt was very fair treatment. I liked how they melded traditional LDS perspectives with a nice sprinkling of a more open-minded attitude.

I suspect that "LDS ultra-traditionists" might find it a little too light-hearted and candid, while "anti-LDS" would find it too positive toward LDS beliefs. But for someone wanting to know more about Mormonism or its member's practices, this is the best overview I have ever seen. In fact, I took it to my local ward and passed it around to several other LDS members. I think my ward would be changed for the better if they all read it.

Highly recommended!

Fine Mini-Encyclopedia of Mormon Thought and Culture
By R. W. Rasband
(Full disclosure: I'm acquainted with Christopher Bigelow and have had friendly correspondence by e-mail with Jana Riess, the authors of this book.) The series title "...for Dummies" really bugs me, especially in this case, because this is not a book for stupid people. It's for intelligent people who don't have all the information they want. The authors of "Mormonism for Dummies" never talk down or condescend to you. Rather, they offer you a full smorgasboard of things you need to know about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons). Like many faith traditions, Mormonism is something you can spend a whole lifetime investigating and never get to the bottom. But Bigelow and Riess, both faithful members, have put together what you could call a mini-encyclopedia that answers most of the questions you could come up with. They cover doctrine, history, and particularly culture, so that by the end of the book you get a vivid sense of just what it must be like to be a Mormon. If you think Mormons are somehow wacky or weird, this book will give you a glimpse of the power and breadth of Mormon thought, and may make you rethink your prejudices. The tone of this book is admirably moderate in its tackling of the many gray areas of Mormon practice, like whether it's OK for Mormons to see R-rated movies, or whether caffeinated sodas are against the health code called the "Word of Wisdom". If you aren't Mormon, this book is an excellent source of information; if you are Mormon this book is still illuminating in that you may find out that some things you thought weren't true really are, or vice versa. This gets my highest recommendation.

Web site creation and development
By Amazon Customer
I am certain pleased with myself for taking the time to read the reviews, particularly those who expressed disappointment, if not frustration, with the books/titles offered. I admit to knowing nothing, and those reviews documented my worst fear, i.e, more dollars down-the-tube trying to develop a web site, hopefully on my own.

Not necessarily for dummies. I think I am pretty smart and I couldn't figure this out. It just pushes software that is out dated and some quite expensive

Nice List But Utterly Unusable
By Sytelus
This book could have been a rescue tube in this heavily urbanized east coast. It puts out pretty nice collection of things you can do in weekends, places you can go and experience you can have. I'm pretty outgoing and am aware of "secret gems" in this area but I still found few more gems like Hot Ballooning in CT, renting a boat (no licenses req) for week long journey through Erie Canal and winter language classes at Mohonk Mountain House. I also found helpful trip reports for Block Island and Mystic Seaport which I was looking for quite a while. But beyond this, the book is pretty much unusable. The book is organized as series of very descriptive long long long trip reports. So unless you are willing to sit down and patiently read these 400 pages of trip reports, you won't know if you should choose this or that. The editor or whoever decided layout of book simply didn't used common sense. How a typical reader like me would use this book? I would typically open this book on Friday night and want to have a look at a table listing places and attributes such as cost, travel time, best season, outdoor activities, attractions, required reservations, etc. Then I would choose couple of places from this table, read their 20 lines max trip report, have a look at 3-4 photos, choose one place and just go. Right? It's common sense. Instead, this book has a long long glorifying travel essays as if they are competing for some literary prize. There are no summaries. Forget that, there are NO PHOTOS!! So unless you read the whole thing start to finish, you won't have slightest idea whether should you go there or there. At times even after reading whole thing you would be still confused which place to pick because each trip author tends to glorify their trip so much (even if it's just Newport or Newark)! Bummer. I think the book could have been cut down in 1/4 of size which would have increased its usability by factor of 10.

Highly Practical
By MAURICIO AGUIAR
As someone who teaches Statistics to Information Technology professionals I am always looking for new ways of explaining basic Statistical ideas to "newcomers". This book is excellent for those learners who find it easier to learn through examples and practice than just by reading theory. It is true that one would need another book for comprehensive explanations, however this book is one of the best resources available for "hands-on" practice. Although other reviewers have covered the book's contents I would like to focus on Chapter 19, Ten Ways to Spot Common Statistical Mistakes, that covers the following topics:

- Scrutinizing Graphs
- Searching for and Specifying Bias
- Marking the Margin of Error
- Scanning for Sample Size
- Studying Sample Selection (Gotta Be Random)
- Checking for Confounding Variables
- Considering Correlation
- Doing the Math
- Detecting Selective Reporting
- Avoiding the Anecdote

I believe every introductory Statistics book should contain a similar section.
This book is also a great help for those who already know basic Statistics and need a quick, practical review.

Used this book before I took my class and it made all the difference. If you're wary of numbers, like me, then this book spells it out plainly and simply. Highly recommend.

Standards compliance out of the window
By Joshua K. Briley
I generally turn to "Dummies" books when I have no knowledge of a subject, but need quick information. I like the books... Unlike most techies, I like the humor contained within. One thing about techno-dummie books is that they generally give you just enough information to get up and running... They're great starting points. However, you will not learn standarized methods, as proposed by the W3C, from this book. You'll learn about selectors, but things like the box model are not really explained as well as they should be.

THIS BOOK IS GEARED TOWARDS IE BROWSERS ONLY - as the author states several times throughout. In regards to marketing, MS owning 90% market share, it makes sense to teach from this angle. But to learn the full potential of the language I can't see the justification. Firefox, Opera, and Safari, already support alot of selctors from CSS Level 3, leaving the IE viewers a degraded or dimished view of pages created to standard. It's possible that IE may take advantage of these things in the future, hopefully, and you won't learn what CSS truly has to offer in the dummies books.

I would definitely recommend looking at WROX CSS books such as "Professional CSS..." and "Accessible XHTML and CSS Web Sites Problem Design Solution" after reading this book. Other good books would be Jeremy Keith's "DOM Scripting...", which is geared towards CSS guys, and Dan Cederhom's "Bulletproof Web Design..."

That being said, the Dummies book, in my opinion is the easiest starting point... just be prepared to do more reading.... lots more.

Misses the point of CSS totally
By Gazzer
The whole point of CSS is to open up the web to a large number of users whether they use a Windows machine, a Mac, a phone, a mobile device, are blind etc. Furthermore, CSS is based around the w3.org STANDARDS which define how browsers are supposed to display information. It's well known amongst designers and developers that Internet Explorer has quite the worst correct support of these standards - in other words it tends to display pages incorrectly. Almost all top CSS designers will design on a browser that has good standards such as Firefox, and then iron out the broken renderings that IE produces at the end.

It's totally amazing to me that on author should be promoting CSS (ie standards based design) then suggest that because most people use IE, you should design to its broken renderings. This is a bad idea for many reasons

1. what happens if Microsoft update IE to support standards correctly. Your page will be broken

2. at least 20% of users don't use IE. If you are a business who turns 20% of your customers away they you won't last long. This number will only get bigger too.

3. The whole point of the web is that it is a system that is independent of any platform, and CSS is a culmination of this effort. By designing for IE's quirks, you are effectively moving back to the dark ages of 'view this page in NN at 800pixels wide on a screen of ...'.

Effectively this book is teaching fundamentals using broken tools. Hardly a way to learn a new powerful technique that is revolutionizing the web.

A Major Disappointment
By J. Jenkins
Like other readers, I found myself extremely put off by the author's unfathomable condescension towards platforms other than Windows XP, browsers other than Internet Explorer 6, and monitors either smaller or larger than the norm. Would that it stopped there. He also goes out of his way to insult standards bodies, programmers, and even animators who haven't switched to all-digital production.

Beyond the blatant callousness of his remarks, there is a serious weakness here for a book coming out under the otherwise excellent ...Dummies line: It's simply not good business, for two reasons:

1) Even if people who don't use standard and software and equipment are used to seeing Web pages that don't work properly, that doesn't mean that it doesn't alienate them. If I were the owner of a small business, I simply wouldn't want to hire a Web designer who is cheerfully willing to cut my sales by even as much as 5%. It's bad business.

In particular, a lot of people who use old software do so because they are overwhelmed by the relentless press to upgrade or simply can't afford it. Yes, IE6 is free--but XP isn't.

2) Standards are not static, nor is software. Within the next year or so, the dominant platform is likely to be Vista and the dominant browser IE7 (or later). The best way to guarantee that my Web pages will continue to work with future software and standards is to make sure that they're conformant now. Again, if I were looking from the perspective of a business owner, I wouldn't want to have to rehire my Web designer (or, more likely, a different one) in two or three or five or ten years because the non-standard CSS they wrote now stopped working, soley because they made the lazy assumption that the only browser one needs to support is IE6.

I'm really astonished that the editor at Wiley let this one out the door.
