About the Author
Rex Miller was a Professor of Industrial Technology at The State University of New York, College at Buffalo for more than 35 years. He has taught on the technical school, high school, and college level for more than 40 years. He is the author or coauthor of more than 100 textbooks ranging from electronics through carpentry and sheet metal work. He has contributed more than 50 magazine articles over the years to technical publications. He is also the author of seven civil war regimental histories.

Mark Richard Miller finished his B.S. degree in New York and moved on to Ball State University, where he obtained the Master’s degree. He went to work in San Antonio. He taught high school and went to graduate school in College Station, Texas, where he finished the Doctorate. He took a position at Texas A&M University in Kingsville, Texas, where he now teaches in the Industrial Technology Department as a Professor and Department Chairman. He has coauthored 11 books and contributed many articles to technical magazines. His hobbies include refinishing a 1970 Plymouth Super Bird and a 1971 Road-Runner.

Edwin P. Anderson was a professional engineer and the author of numerous books for the trades, including air conditioning, sheet metal, home appliance, and electrical.

The cookbook has a variety of easy to fix menu's.Menu's include chicken,turkey,pork,beef,sauces,soups and stews.The metric conversion chart is very helpful.Beware of the cook times.You should check your food abut an hour before the minimum reccomended cook time.

My favorite crock-pot cookbook ever

For me, this cookbook had the perfect mix of oldtime favorites and new dishes, clear and helpful instructions, plus great pictures that gave me a good idea of what I was supposed to be aiming for.

I'd definitely recommend this cookbook to anyone in a situation similar to where I was -- I just never seemed to have the time or the patience for regular cooking, but still wanted to make nice meals. On the other hand, I don't know that this would be the best fit for say, a college student giving crock-pot cooking a try -- the dishes may be more elaborate or use more expensive ingredients than they're looking at.

tall skinny book difficult to use; disappointing

I should have read the description more closely. It is 96 pages including index, etc. It is taller than Joy of Cooking but as skinny as the free blooklet you get when you buy a slow cooker, making it difficult to handle. The recipies look OK, nothing caught my fancy, but this book was NOT worth the money to buy. I have the Better Homes and Garden crocery cooker book and it is great. Perhaps as a first book it would be OK.

Are there only American Dummies passioned by Champagne??

Although the book gives a good overview about 'le' and 'la' Champagne, I think it's a little bit too focused on the US market (hence the title of my review). I think it's certainly interesting to give an impression about the US market (and others!) but I would have preferred it in a separate chapter.

Also, I definitely consider the storage temperature indicated in the concerning chapter on storing and serving champagne to be too high!. For not-vintage champagnes this might not be that relevant, but storing a more expensive (and complex!) prestige cuvee at 59 F can (and will probably) destroy many of the deliscious aromas of the wine (FYI: for prolonged storage chamagne should be store between 50F/10C and 54F/12C). This kind of critical information SHOULD be correct!!

I would also have preferred some more outspoken opinions and personal tastes, and less diplomatic opinions (I know it helps when calling a big house for some tasting bottles but it is less interesting for the readers), in my opinion to many wines have been denominated as '... this is my preferred rose champagne!..." (how many preferred ones can you have?).

For the starting and non-professional champagne devotees, I would more recommend the books by Tom Stevenson, Richard Juhlin and Maggie Mcnie. Although those books are more comprehensive, they all have a better introductory chapter on the history, production, area, grapes and ... storage conditions.

This book ain't just for dummies! It's a rather comprehensive overview of champagne--how and where it's made and different styles and price ranges, with good information on serving and food pairing. I continue to reference this book before I give champagne tastings, and continue to come away with something new.

Alot of information for the price, without any snobbery. Highly Recommended!

Prior to my recent trip to the Champagne district of France, I had the very good fortune of happening upon a copy of Ed McCarthy's "Champagne for Dummies". Although I have seen and considered countless "Dummies", this was my first purchase...and what a REWARDING purchase it was! Extremely well organized, knowledgeably written, and easy to use and understand, "Champagne for Dummies" should be considered de rigeur reading for anyone with even the slightest interest in what makes champagne the special drink that it is! McCarthy knows his stuff and how to present it in a way that's crisp, clean and thoroughly enjoyable...not unlike a glass of fine champagne! Definitely a "must have"!

We bought the Mobile book, the "Everything" book and this book. Of the three, this had the most detailed information. The maps are not great but the rest of the book makes up for that. The regional grouping was a great help.

Gets you up and running fast

Vieira strikes the perfect balance of introductory and practical content. Databases in general and SQL Server 2005 in particular make for an enormous field of content, and there's no way to cover it all in one book. In fact the introduction says as much, and the back cover presents a diagram outlining how this title fits into the publisher's 5-book series.

Although the publisher lists this book as being in the middle of the series, I found it a good place to start. I had made a couple of attempts to dive into SQL Server 2005 using the online help and various 3rd party Web sites and articles. For me that approach just didn't work. There's really no substitute for a good book to get you started. Vieira provides clear and often humorous explanations of the book's concepts along with useful hands-on exercises (so make sure you've got SQL Server up and running as you read).

The thing I especially like about this book is that it covers the new features of SQL Server 2005 without expecting that you've used prior versions, so those of us new to the program can get started quickly and confidently. The book does, however, provide tips for upgraders as well as anyone who will be dealing with legacy code from prior versions.

At 650 pages there's more than enough to keep you busy and learning. However, as Vieira and his publisher point out, you can't do it all in one book. There are several choices that by their title may seem redundant to this one, but are in fact complementary. Vieira's companion work, Professional SQL Server 2005 Programming or Brust's and Forte's Programming Microsoft SQL Server 2005 will find a useful place on your bookshelf once you've mastered this book's content.

Great SQL Server Book -- Balanced, Practical, Comprehensive

I purchased this book for 2 reasons. First, I'm in IT and my organization uses quite a few professionally created small/medium SQL Server databases. While I'm familiar with the essentials of SQL Server administration, I wanted to know more about the data side to help me think through problems that arise as well has to help me leverage the data by using it as a source for other applications and custom build databases. I also just started creating small ASP sites and want to use SQL Server 2005 as the back end.

This book is fantastic. Because of the nature of my job I've read a large technical book (500+ pages) every couple of months for years now and this is the best written book I can remember since reading Mark Minasi's "Master Windows 2000 Server" 5 years ago.

This is a beginning book and thus if you have programming and/or SQL Server experience you will probably find more detail than you need--I'd rather have more than less! However, I think it is misleading to think of it merely as a beginning book. After reading it there was little I found in my organization's professionally developed small to medium databases that I do not now understand. I'm sure there is much more to learn when dealing with highly distributed massive databases, but if you're at that level you're certainly not reading this review! After reading this book, I'm now able to create my own custom built databases which read data from our professionally developed databases. For example, I've created custom databases which use our SQL Server based personnel database as the source for basic employee info, thus my custom database does not have to deal with replicating employee information as this information is pulled directly from the source database. I also now know everything I need on the SQL Server side for the small ASP applications I'm creating.

It's hard to put my finger on what I most like about the book. The best term I can come up with is balance. It provides a great balance between background theory and discussion of practical examples. Vieira has a great sense for knowing when discussing theory is the best way to explain something versus knowing when to jump right into an example. The other thing I really like about the book is that his real-world experience is apparent on every page. This book is not just a dry "this is how this function works" book. The book is filled with best practices and small gray boxes which warn of possible pitfalls. He is also not afraid to give his own opinion about possibly controversial issues, but he does so in italics to make it clear he is giving his opinion and he also very clearly states his reasons for his opinion.

In one sentence, I like this book because reading it felt like I was having a private tutoring session with an experienced SQL programmer.

About the Author
Barry Fox and Nadine Taylor are a husband-and-wife writing team living in Los Angeles, California.
Barry Fox, PhD, is the author, coauthor, or ghostwriter of numerous books, including the New York Times number-one bestseller, The Arthritis Cure (St. Martin’s, 1997). Jinoos Yazdany, MD, MPH, is a board-certified internist and a Rheumatology Fellow at the University of California, San Francisco. She completed medical school at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she received a Humanism in Medicine award from the Health Care Foundation of New Jersey and graduated Alpha Omega Alpha. Informative and Practical

I've had arthritis for a long time, so I was happy to find this well-rounded, informative and practical arthritis book. I learned more from this book than I have from all the others I've read - combined. It gives a good overview of all kinds of arthritis, the ways they diagnose it and treatments. It also talks about the drugs used for the disease, their pros and cons. There's also good information on supplements, exercise, body alignment, and more. I especially like the nice balance the authors struck between traditional and alternative medicine. There are a lot of new ideas in the book I hadn't heard of before - some of which worked well for my arthritis. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who has arthritis.

The good, the bad and the equivocal...all rolled into one!

I found this book to be informative and entertaining but also somewhat disturbing. There seems to be a tendency to overemphasize so-called "alternative" therapy, and the information is presented in such a way as to cajole the unwary reader into thinking that mainstream and alternative treatments are equivalent. Curiously, neither of the authors is a physician, and the book hardly mentions the existence of the "rheumatologist",i.e.,the physician who specializes in diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic diseases. I found this surprising at best, and also a bit offensive. It was clear that this is not a completely objective or balanced guide to arthritis and its management.

Budgie owners beware!

From the introduction given to this book, you get the impression that the author will spend at least some time addressing the peculiarities of the great budgerigar. I was greatly disappointed. Aside from a passing reference that budgies are hardier than some parrot species and that they can indeed learn to talk (both painfully obvious to any budgie owner), there is nothing at all. It is pretty obvious that she has never owned one. The author makes the assumption that, because budgies are parrots, they must be the same as every other kind of parrot that she has owned. And that they are not! This book is filled with misinformation that is thoroughly and completely refuted in other books written specifically for these little birds. For the budgie owner there is no reason at all to buy this book.
For owners of other times of parrots, I would consider looking elsewhere. The book is filled to the brim with preachy, top-of-the-soapbox lectures that are uninteresting, redundant, and obnoxious. If you actually made it through the first few chapters, which outlined in detail what a bad person you are for wanting to own a parrot in the first place, to the chapter where training is actually addressed, you might be disappointed to learn that it consists of only getting your bird to come to your hand from the t-stand, from inside and from on top of the cage (my budgie could do that after about a day!). Want to know the secret of getting your bird to talk? Just repeat the same word to it twice a day for ten minutes.
All of the essential information could be put on a simple print out of a few pages, and I would be greatly surprised if you couldn't find it after a few minutes searching on the internet.

Great book but beware ...

I have had my African Grey for about a three weeks and have been reading everything I could get my hands on before I brought her home. I really loved this book, but wanted to let folks know that this book is a reprint of the book by the same author titled "The Pleasures of Their Company: An Owner's Guide to Parrot Training [Hardcover]. Don't make the same mistake I made and order both.

This is a great book with lots of new ideas. I haven't finished it yet, but I am real excited about teaching my Cockatoo and Sun Conure more manners and ways to be happy in the human world.
