If you could buy a book that would predict the buying behavior of millions of people, you'd buy it, right? "Defining Markets, Defining Moments" explains the author's concept of cohort marketing, "an extremely focused approach of generational marketingthat enables managers, salespeople, and marketing specialists to understand and predict a generation's particular attitudes, desires, preferences and buying behaviors - even when they enter new lifestages. The book outlines the seven generational groups that are currently affecting the marketplace - and the new ones that are emerging. And it presents new marketing models and practical advice, based on the author's experience with Fortune 500 companies, for tapping the minds, and pocketbooks, of various age groups. The text discusses key physical, socioeconomic, and emotional factors that influence a particular generation's behavior or profile."

Review
“…does a good job of helping marketers do the right kind of homework before and as they prepare their products for market…”(Journal of Consumer Marketing, Vol.20, No.21, 2003)

From the Inside Flap
The World War II generation. Baby Boomers. Generation X. And now, the up-and-coming N-Gen. Each group has its own mindset, tastes, and array of hot buttons shaped by generational "defining moments" such as Pearl Harbor, the Kennedy assassination, and the events of September 11, 2001. How can you ensure that your company's products and brands attract new customers across generations? This unique book provides the answers. Based on their pioneering research on generational cohorts, Charles Schewe, PhD, and Geoffrey E. Meredith explain the importance of targeting your marketing efforts to each of the seven distinct generational groups in the marketplace so that your company snags the largest share of the market. You'll learn how to:

  • Understand the attitudes and desires of the population's seven distinct age groups
  • Identify key physical, socioeconomic, and emotional factors for each generation
  • Tailor your marketing campaigns to the minds—and pocketbooks—of each generation
  • Take advantage of generational marketing opportunities outside North America
  • Plan for Baby Boomers' transition to retirement—and the ascendancy of Generation X
Using fascinating case histories from their work with Fortune 500 clients, Meredith and Schewe show you how to predict each generational cohort's desires, preferences, and buying behaviors successfully. They describe the changes you need to make in your marketing strategies. And they explain in detail how targeting your marketing efforts to each cohort will ensure your company's success in the marketplace.

From the Back Cover
"To target an age bracket, you've got to figure out birth cohorts—and to do that, you've got to read this book by Meredith and Schewe—and read it carefully. It brims with color, wisdom, and the latest social science findings on a topic of growing importance to marketers worldwide." —Neil Howe, coauthor of Millennials Rising: The Next Great Generation Learn to predict the buying behavior of these 7 generations Depression WWII Postwar Boomer I Boomer II Gen X N-Gen Find Out How Facts Like These Can Help You Hone Your Marketing Messages:

  • Lifelong attitudes towards jobs, sex, money, and music are formed when we're between the ages of 17 and 23.
  • The sweet and sour taste preferences of 70-year-olds are about the same as those of 7-year-olds.
  • Today's teenagers distrust advertising, big-name brands, and big business in general.
  • Studies show that approximately 40% of retired people would much rather be working.
  • Older adults much prefer collecting rich and fulfilling "experiences" instead of collecting more "stuff" (material goods).
  • In 1960, one out of seven high-school graduates in America went on to college; today, two out of three do.
  • Those who came of age during WWII are the most romantic of all age groups.
"Cohort analysis really works. We have used it as a primary tool to help us understand motivations and differences in consumption patterns in 14 countries around the world. This book describes the concept in a way that brings it to life and is fun reading." —David Garrett, Director, Consumer Insight and Opportunity Planning, Coca-Cola North America www.hungryminds.com

Breakthroughs in generational marketing!
By A Customer
Finally, a marketer's guide to generations that doesn't leave you with the 1946-1964 dates marking the Boomer generation..._Defining Markets, Defining Moments_ is a fresh new research into generations and their use in marketing, and into defining what a generation IS.
In this book Schewe & Meredith introduce cohort marketing by looking at the groups of people born closely enough together to have similar experiences growing up and coming of age. They then throw in a recipe on how to combine this with a few other demographic factors, more briefly introduced, like gender and urbanicity, to create a powerful formula for targeting demographic groups. Also included is information on how each generational personality will grow up and the way generations can continue to be marketed to as they go from adolescence to adulthood to old age -- how each generation will buy its first car, get married, buy a house or retire.
_Defining Markets, Defining Moments_ goes beyond "The Baby Boomers were born 1946-1964 after the war and grew up during the Vietnam War holding peace protests, remembering Woodstock, and are therefore a generation of ideals and can be marketed to through '60s music". These authors carefully considered their dates for the birth of generations and asked themselves exactly how old a person born in each year would be at critical moments of time. Therefore the Baby Boomers (born 1946-1954) who used to be all about love and peace are distinguished from the younger Generation Jones (born 1955-1965), the oldest of whom would be 14 and the youngest of whom (born Dec. 31, 1965) only 3 during Woodstock. Insights are gathered beyond the usual clichés captured in generational marketing books. And rather than assuming history began with the Baby Boomers and leaving everyone older behind as a pre-Boomer group of fossils as many marketers do, these authors identify three pre-Boomer groups who are under 90 today -- the soda-fountain, "Blackboard Jungle" Postwar Generation (1928-1945); the World War II Generation defined by their entry into that war of sacrifice (1922-1927); and the frugal, elderly Depression Generation who came of age learning to do without (1912-1921). An interesting analysis that could be continued with today's nonagenarians and centenarians (even though I bet too many people thought they were too thin a slice to be interested in marketing to). Planning any new updated editions?
On the downside, this book still has a few tweaks to work out with generational dates (1965: Jones or true X? Was 1920 really defined more by the Depression than the war?) or old stereotypes and clichés that linger (generations defined by the economic recession or the Internet), or perhaps just look too much like the workplace and marketing information offered in other books. Maybe it's just me and some of the sentences seem copied verbatim out of other marketing guides. Plus, the description of Generation Y, or "Generation N" (the N-Generation, 1977-19??), is a little off.
All in all, a decent marketing book and more-than-decent exercise in thinking about what really makes generations who they are. Several steps up from your annually recycled Elders/Boomers/Xers/EchoBoomers-in-the-Market guides, and a guide that will likewise give marketers who use it a little edge over all the marketers who use other books.

    Good, but not great
    By A Customer
This is a companion book to the "Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World," for those who decide to venture beyond Disney's realm in central Florida. The authors do a fine job rating attractions (rides, films, displays, etc.). They use star-ratings coupled with their assessments and readers' comments, along with a healthy dose of humor--all of which will be familiar to readers of the "Walt Disney World" book. It's all-too familiar in the case of Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. In fact, it's simply a verbatim extract of the "Walt Disney World" text. Worse yet, it omits one of the best features of the Disney book: the touring plans.
If you're planning a trip to Universal Studios, and/or Islands of Adventure, stick with Sehlinger's Disney book: it contains more and better coverage. Sea World receives better coverage here. And this is the only "Unofficial Guide" coverage of the other parks.

Busch Gardens & Sea World Guide
    By Joseph Boone
Beyond Disney is meant to be used as a second guide when planning a trip to Orlando. They assume that you have purchased a guide for Walt Disney World and are using this one for the other theme parks in the area. This is a good idea but there are some problems with it. First, the Universal Parks are already covered in the The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2008 (Unofficial Guides) and that material is simply dropped in here with no additions. So if you have the WDW book, then you don't need to see that again here.

The main value in this book lies in the coverage of Sea World and Busch Gardens. Both are major theme parks and get full coverage here. This is the only book in the Unofficial Guide series where you'll find that material and many of the other publishers ignore those parks completely. If you are interested in attending either park, then I highly recommend Beyond Disney. If you plan to stick to WDW and/or the Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure area then you can safely skip this.

We just got back from our Orlando vacation. I had read and re-read this book before going, even made notes. It was the best preparation I did. We were ready for everything and I we did everything we wanted to do by taking the author's advice. I recommend buying it before visiting the Orlando area.

    Review
"Nanotechnology may well rival the development of the transistor or telecommunications in its ultimate impact."

    From the Author
I’m one of the authors for the book and a graduate student at Rice University in Houston, Texas - one of the academic leaders in nanotechnology. Personally, my unique background allows me to speak to a wide audience: my engineering degree has given me insight into transitioning research into practical applications; my Air Force experience has allowed me to understand the needs of our government and military (huge financial backers of university research). Now, while working in the trenches of nanotechnology, I’ve come across a disconnect between this research and the average person. How do we communicate this technology’s importance and potential applications to the business leader, venture capitalist, investor, or entrepreneur to make it widely available in every day uses?

This book does just that by identifying needs and separating science fiction from science fact – dispelling the myths and laying out realistic expectations not only in applications but timeframe as well. We identify three industries: materials, computers, and healthcare. These areas will be greatly affected by nanotechnology and advances in each will continue to feed each other. For example, future nano-scale processor fabrication methods will be used to create unique materials for healthcare applications.

Another "vision" of the authors was to "show" nanotechnology – there are over 100 line art and photos illustrating the science and applications of nanotechnology distinguishing this book from other nano books. This makes it far easier for the average high school student or even baby boomer to pick up and quickly understand this emerging technology and provide them the tools to choose either a career in the sciences or invest in a nano-company stock.

I encourage those interested in this technology, whether it is for shear interest or for business ideas, to closely read this book.

    From the Back Cover
See how this "little" technology can generate BIG profits!

Will nanotechnology change the future? How will it change your life? Find out here!

Nanotechnology is a huge, complex field of study about matter 1/75,000th the size of a human hair. Here's a plain-English look at what it can mean to you and your business. • Understand nanotechnology terms
    • Identify applications for the technology

    I FINALLY GET IT! THANKS.
    By MG
This book is a great introduction to nanotechnology. I've been intrigued by the idea that nanotechnology can tackle many issues, such as curing cancer or making travel into space much easier, and now I've found a book that clearly explains how these issues, and many more, are being tackled. The authors not only show how nanotechnology is being used to address many of our problems but explains in easy to understand language the progress that has been made to date, the research programs that are making further progress and the ethical controversties around nano.

A New Science Explained As Simply as Possible
    By John Matlock
Sometimes I have to chuckle at the titles contained in the For Dummies series. Nanotechnology is not something that I would normally think of as being of interest to Dummies. I guess I'd best not give examples of subjects I'd think of as being suitable For Dummies.

However, that misses the point. The For Dummies series has pioneered a writing style that enables the non-informed reader to get a much better understanding of complex subjects.

Nanotechnology is a science that is only about twenty years old. I say 'about' twenty years because it really depends on just what you consider to be the start of the science.

Nanotechnology deals with things that are nano in size, say around 1/5000 the size of a red blood cell, about 1/75,000 the diameter of a human hair. At that size, all kinds of strange and wonderful things begin to happen. The technology promises to offer significant improvements in all kinds of areas from energy, health, to computers.

I can't really talk about the subject in this short review, it's too big, that's why it takes a whole book to cover.

Conclusion: Written in the For Dummies style, this is a book on Nanotechnology that makes it understandable to the average person. I'd consider it mandatory reading for anyone thinking of going into chemistry or physics for a career. My prediction (and the authors) is that this is going to be the hot science subject of the next generation. If I knew a high school student interested in science....

10 Reasons You Need the New How to Cook Everything (even if you already have the original)

    1. The 2000+ simple recipes will make cooking at home easier, so you can spend less and eat better.

    2. With 1,446 new recipes and variations such as Beer-and-Butter Chicken Wings, Roasted Corn Chowder, BLT Salad, Paella with Chicken and Chorizo, Caramelized French Toast, and Popcorn Brittle, this book provides a whole new array of recipes.

    3. The many new techniques covered in this edition will help you to expand your repertoire of kitchen skills to include frosting a cake, grinding your own chili powder, or even de-boning a quail.

    4. Your husband, wife, brother, sister, son, daughter, or best friend needs a little help in the kitchen (okay, maybe a lot). The new How to Cook Everything contains more expert advice like “12 Must-Have Kitchen Tools,” “Super-Easy 3-Ingredient Soups,” and “The Basics of Cutting.”

    5. You trust Bittman’s no-nonsense opinions and can’t wait to read the thousands of new ones packed into this edition. He’ll even help you to select the best inexpensive fish (ex. mackerel is versatile, tasty, healthy, and plentiful; tilapia can taste kinda muddy).

    6. The index of “Essential Recipes” points you to Bittman’s favorite dishes in each chapter, so there’s less reason to be intimidated by all those recipes.

    7. There are more helpful lists in the new How to Cook Everything than ever before. Bittman shows how to jack up the basics with easy ideas like “4 Ways to Thicken a Sauce”, and “Infinite Ways to Season or Serve Any Grilled or Broiled Chicken Dish.”

    8. With this edition’s brand new charts, it’s absurdly easy to look up the cooking times for grains, heat factor for chiles, and other need-to-know information about everything from herbs and spices to flour and noodles.

    9. You know it’s cheap, easy, and fast to serve your family boneless chicken breasts every week, but sometimes you run out of ideas. That’s why you really need all the new recipes, variations, and other suggestions for chicken breasts like “11 More Ways to Vary Grilled or Broiled Boneless Chicken.”

    10. There are plenty of new illustrations which incorporate more detail than many photos. They’ll show you how to use a pastry bag, how to eat crabs, and even how to puree soup using an immersion blender (it’s is way less messy than a regular blender).

    From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Ten years have brought many changes to the U.S. culinary landscape, and Bittman's new edition of his contemporary classic reflects that, with hundreds of recipes added, out-of-date ones banished and few lines from the holdovers left untouched. The opening chapter offers invaluable new tips on basic kitchen equipment and techniques, and in the wake of the recent vegetarian version of the book, produce and legumes are now featured earlier and with more inspired meatless recipes. Overall, Bittman's globe-trotting palate shows even better than it did in the already quite international first edition, with intriguing recipes from every corner of the world. Considering these expansions, the most important change has been to the book's user-friendliness: a proliferation of charts, lists and boxes makes much more information immediately available—hardly a page goes by without an eye-catching sidebar about technique, a handy table organizing the basics of an ingredient or dish or the myriad suggestions of variations and new ways to think about a recipe that make it the best-value all-in-one volume available. At-a-glance coding to indicate what is fast to make, what can be made ahead and what is vegetarian, plus highlighted recipes that Bittman considers essential, help ensure that even with more of everything to cook, this massive tome is navigable. Whether the first edition is on their shelves or not, home cooks of all skill levels will want to get this one. (Oct.)

    From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Bittman's How To Cook Everything, originally published in 1998, became an almost instant classic and has sold close to two million copies. This new edition has been reorganized and includes 500 new recipes and many more step-by-step illustrations. Each chapter now opens with "essential recipes" that should be in every cook's repertoire, and there are dozens of new charts and lists throughout. Vegetarian recipes are marked with a special icon, and quick recipes—Bittman also writes "The Minimalist" column for the New York Times—and those that can be made ahead are similarly denoted; prep times are also given for all recipes. Since he wrote the first edition, Bittman has published The Best Recipes in the World and How To Cook Everything Vegetarian; in this tenth anniversary edition, there are more recipes from cuisines around the world and more vegetarian recipes than in the original. Valuable as both a reference and a cookbook, this is an essential purchase.

    Best Cookbook Ever
    By Ally
THIS IS THE BOOK YOU ARE LOOKING FOR!! Before I start, I did not receive this product in exchange for a review, or whatever, I really do feel this strongly about it...
This will be the best cook book you'll buy, ever, and you'll save by discovering so many things you can cook from what you already have, or common ingredients and spices. I am a stay at home mom of three, and would just cringe whenever I'd serve dinner, I didn't know what the heck to cook and so it was basically a rotating menu of baked/breaded meat, mashed potatoes or plain rice, and a canned/frozen vegetable. Maybe some pasta and sauce, mac and cheese, box sides, etc. Sometimes I'd get fancy and cook a tuna or broccoli casserole. To make matters worse, I'm a strict vegetarian and s I'd only eat the sides, or pre packaged stuff. I am telling you this to say that within an hour or 2 of getting this book I was able to put together a weeks worth of much tastier, more wonderful meals that everyone loved using my crappy pantry ingredients/common spices I happened to have.
When I went grocery shopping, I knew exactly what to get and my cart was mostly pantry ingredients and fresh veggies--which was always my goal but didn't know where to start. The leftovers (especially if you freeze and rotate) make great (cheap/tasty) lunches....and there's lots of recipes that use leftovers too. I also purchased the vegetarian version, which is just as amazing!

If you only own one single cookbook, it needs to be this. He isn't exaggerating when he titled it "How To Cook Everything". This is my go to gift for students headed off to college and newlyweds. Everyone I have given it to has told me it has become their go to gift as well. I've been to culinary school and I grab this book before my high dollar CIA (Culinary Institute of America) textbook for reminders!

This is the one I've been looking for!
    By Denise Patterson
Let me start by saying I'm a busy working mom of two. I grew up eating Hamburger Helper and hot dogs, so I didn't learn to cook until I was an adult. My dad's had triple bypass and my mom's having gastric bypass, so we're trying to learn from their mistakes and eat not entirely vegetarian, but definitely a more plant-based diet. I'm sure all this sounds familiar to a lot of people!

How to Cook Everything Vegetarian is exactly the cookbook I've been trying to find for a long time. It has the simple, everyday recipes that I sometimes need, combined with a LOT of wonderful vegetarian dishes from ordinary supermarket ingredients. How about Peanut Soup, Senegalese Style? Or Korean-Style Noodles in Cool Bean Broth (in less than 20 minutes for when the kids are whining for dinner) Mustard Cheese Fondue?

This book is written in Bittman's typical `theme and variations' style, with a basic recipe (like for waffles) and then a sidebar or list following the recipe that gives variations (like a list of things you can add to waffles for flavoring). The great thing about this is that it means you rarely have to reject a recipe because you don't have the exact ingredients, just go with a variant. The only quibble I have with it is, it's sometimes difficult to keep track of what you are supposed to sub out & sub back in when you have a crying toddler on your ankle.

A basic cookbook should also walk you through basic techniques and ingredients. I was a little surprised to see the vegetables chapter was nearly 200 pages. Then I looked through it and realized a lot of that is guidance on how to select and prep the various vegetables. It's also helpful that he includes substitution suggestions - I may be out of broccoli, but if I can make the same recipe with green beans, then I can forgo the trip to the store one more day.

Another nice thing about this cookbook is, unlike most vegetarian cookbooks I have seen, it doesn't rely heavily on unusual ingredients or meat substitutes. It seems like there has to be a happy medium between burgers & fries on one hand and stuff you've never seen before. Surely we can make a healthy diet based on basic veggies, fruit, grains, and legumes, and that's JUST what this book focuses on.

But it doesn't matter how great the book is if the recipes aren't good! So I tried a few. The Spicy Autumn Veggie Burgers (we made less spicy for the kids) were terrific with a dollop of peach chutney, although the kids preferred ketchup. I was pleased at how quickly they came together too. The Glazed Carrot Soup the kids ate without any complaint at all. And oh my the Apple "Fries"!!!!

Because I'm sure people are wondering - yes, he has another cookbook called How to Cook Everything: Vegetarian that came out several years ago. This is NOT just a remake of that slim volume. This is a completely new book. (Why his publishers wanted to do two books with titles the same except for a colon I'll never know.) There's no exact overlap with How to Cook Everything, that I saw - even for recipes like Waldorf Salad, that are essentially the same in both books, there is some slight variation and different text that shows that this was re-written, not just a cut-and-paste job.

In short, I'm very happy with it. I've cooked out of it every day since I got it and I'm sure this will be one of my `go-to' cookbooks for years to come.

I now understand the three weeks in July...
    By Thomas Duff
Yes, there's a Dummies title for just about everything. And since we're now in the 3rd week of the Tour de France, I figured it was about time to finish up Tour de France For Dummies by Phil Liggett, James Raia, and Sammarye Lewis. And yes, I learned quite a bit.

    Content:

Part 1 - A Bicycle Race Unlike Any Other: Answering All Your Tour Questions; Understanding the Tour de France Race Routes; The Races within the Race

Part 2 - How the Race Is Run and Won: It's All about the Team; More Tour Rules Than You Ever Wanted to Know; Understanding Race Strategies

Part 3 - Loving the Ride - A Man and His Bike: Who Are These Guys and How Do They Do It?; Spending a Day in the Life of a Rider; Having the Best Equipment in the Bunch

Part 4 - Watching the Race: Perfecting the Art of Spectating from Home; Going to the Tour - A Brief Guide

Part 5 - The Part of Tens: Ten Greatest Riders in Tour History; The Ten Most Important Tours in History; Ten Unique Tour de France Statistics; Ten Dramatic Tour de France Moments; Ten Great Tour Climbs and Mountaintops; Ten Other Important Races; Glossary; Index

Let's set expectations... I ride a bike maybe a couple times a year, and strictly for recreation. Like many other Americans, I became interested in the sport and the Tour through Lance Armstrong's story. I'd like to think I'm moderately educated on how the Tour works, the different jerseys, a bit of the strategy, and so forth. But when it comes to understanding how riders are picked, the logistics for running the team for three weeks, and how the team cars work, I'm lost. This book really helped clear that up. In a very understandable and readable format, Liggett, Raia, and Lewis take you from the very basics (like jersey colors) through tactics and history. At worst, you'll come away knowing about the peleton and the maillot jaune. But in all likelihood, you'll finish with a much greater and deeper appreciation for what these supreme athletes go through to just finish the Tour, much less compete to win. It's rather awe-inspiring...

The only complaint I have about the book is fairly minor, but it really started to get on my nerves after awhile. The editing of the book is a bit uneven. I don't know if it's due to trying to blend three authors into a single volume or if it was a rush job to get it out before the event. For instance, if a new French word is introduced, like musette (feedbag), I don't need the word musette (feedbag) explained to me every time it occurs. The first time I learn about the domestique going back to get musettes (feedbags) for everyone on the team, that's fine. After that, I should probably know what musette (feedbag) means. Let it go! Same thing with the Discovery Team (formerly the US Postal Service Team). I can make that translation myself after the first five times. And if you say US Postal Service Team (now the Discovery Team), I'm guessing I could have figured that out.

So, if you're still a bit confused about all the hoopla during three weeks in July, this book will definitely clear it up for you. If you're an experienced rider, you may still pick up a few factoids you didn't know.... A good read.

Excellent for the novice Tour watcher as well as the expert
    By Tour lover
This book was well organized and very readable. I read it preceeding the Tour and even tho I've watched the Tour for several years now I still learned some things I didn't know before. I probably will read it again next year as it's one of those books where you seem to be able to pick up something each time you read it. This book has enhanced my enjoyment of the Tour.

    About the Author
Mark Middlebrook used to be an engineer but gave it up when he discovered that he couldn’t handle a real job. He is now principal of Daedalus Consulting, an independent CAD and computer consulting company in Oakland, California. (In case you wondered, Daedalus was the guy in ancient Greek legend who built the labyrinth on Crete. Mark named his company after Daedalus before he realized that few of his clients would be able to pronounce it and even fewer spell it.) Mark is also a contributing editor for CADALYST magazine and Webmaster of markcad.com. When he’s not busy being a cad, Mark sells and writes about wine for Paul Marcus Wines in Oakland. He also teaches literature and philosophy classes at St. Mary’s College of California — hence “Daedalus.” AutoCAD LT 2005 For Dummies is his second book on AutoCAD LT and his seventh on the AutoCAD family of programs.

    Very Helpful Book
    By Amazon Customer
This book is different and better than a lot of other How-To-Do-AutoCAD books. Here is why I think so.

AutoCAD LT is perhaps second only to AutoCAD as the most complex and powerful programs I have ever seen. Middlebrook is clearly very knowledgeable, but remembers what it's like to be a beginner and is able to write from the point of view of someone who is poking the buttons in this program for the first time. There are often several ways to do things with AutoCAD and it was great to see tips about the easiest way for a novice to do them. For instance, this is the only place I have seen a concise list of steps for producing a plot.

Another thing I enjoyed about the book is the perspective. There is a great overview of CAD in general, a list of the differences between LT and AutoCAD, and some ideas on how LT users and AutoCAD users can work together which something every LT user will bump into. In the parts of the book that describe the nuts and bolts, you not only see how to do particular things with the program, you come away with a sense of why the program works the way it does.

He also writes from a non-AutoDesk point of view. I got the feeling that I was getting good information rather than the company line as well as some tips that I wouldn't expect to find in the program manuals or the online help.

It's very readable, which is a rare thing considering the technical subject. There is a sense of humor and it is a pleasure to read. I wouldn't want to try and learn or use this program without the manuals, but I wouldn't want to try it without this book either.

    Amazon.com Review
Whether you have inherited an older Macintosh or just bought a brand-new one, you'll get more from it with the assistance of Macs for Dummies. In addition to the fundamental information that has put generations of Mac users on the right track, this latest edition of a long-standing bestseller incorporates information about the newest Mac developments, including Mac OS 8.5 and the iMac.

On top of author David Pogue's coverage of the system itself and Mac hardware, Macs for Dummies shows you how to use all the most popular Mac application programs, including AppleWorks (also known as ClarisWorks) and Microsoft Office. There's also an excellent glossary that helps you figure out jargon you may encounter in manuals and on the Internet.

This book would be better if Pogue had included more about creating local area networks (LANs) for Macs--such networks are popping up in homes and small offices everywhere. Setting up Mac LANs is so easy, it seems unnecessary to relegate information about it to More Macs for Dummies, as Pogue and his publisher have done. But by itself, the information here is extremely valuable, especially for people totally new to computing. Macs for Dummies makes you feel welcome in the Mac community. --David Wall

    It worked for me .....
    By Geoffrey Brown
The reason I bought this book was that I had been away from Macs since I unplugged my Mac IIcx and put it away. I recognized back then that unless I intended to work exclusively with Mac people, the PC competence was THE one I needed most.
Here in my small town, in the last few months I've had a number of requests for help from Mac people. The local Mac guy isn't getting rave reviews at the moment -- possibly because he has too much work -- so the requests for help that I've referred to him have been bouncing back to me.
Before I took any of these people's money, I wanted to make sure that (1) a computer is still a computer and (2) Macs had not totally morphed into something unrecognizable since I last used one. The book convinced me that the answer to (1) is "yes" and the answer to (2) is "no" (but OS X may change that). This book was a VERY fast read, and gave me those answers.
For me the most valuable part of this book were the two chapters on troubleshooting. They were well written, and certainly covered the range of Mac problems I remember from the IIcx. Time will tell if they cover the range of problems the Mac users here are having right now.
I'm trying to decide which book to read next: the O'Reilley book on Macs for PC people/PCs for Mac people, or the Dummies series book on upgrading and fixing Macs. Obviously one (maybe both) will eventually be necessary.
For the person just starting out with a Mac -- or starting out with computers who is thinking about a Mac -- I think this book would be absolutely first rate. And the book seems to have done the job I required of it just about as painlessly as possible!
It gets five stars from me!!

A Common-Sense Book NOT Written for Dummies
    By Thomas Gabriel
David Pogue has a genius for making the seemingly-complex simple enough for the average person to understand. This is the perfect gift for a writer writing about the Macintosh system; once you get over your intimidation about computers by following Pogue's straightforward and sometimes humorous examples, the user-friendliness of the Mac makes itself obvious, and you're on your way. An excellent, useful book for beginner and seasoned user alike!
