Robert has also managed the maintenance and development of Web sites and online tools, which has included performing project analysis, developing functional specifications, and managing database and Web development. He has designed and implemented various Microsoft Access, SQL Server, and MySQL databases, as well as developed and implemented a variety of Web-based solutions. In all these roles, he has had to perform numerous types of ad hoc queries and modifications, build databases, create and modify database objects, create and review embedded statements, and troubleshoot system- and data-related problems.
In addition to having a technical and SQL background, Robert has written or co-written nine books on various network and server technologies, including two that have focused on SQL Server design and implementation, one on SQL programming (based on the SQL:1999 standard), and one on Microsoft Office Access 2003. The books that Robert has written contain training material that is designed to teach users specific skills and to test their knowledge of the material covered. Having contracted as the senior developmental editor for the Microsoft certification team, he brought to these books his experience developing exam items that helped to focus readers on the skills necessary to perform specific tasks. Robert has also written and edited a variety of other documentation related to SQL databases and other computer technologies. He works as an independent technical consultant and writer in the Seattle area.

Geoff Moes is a software architect and developer who has designed and implemented databases in MySQL as well as having designed and implemented software systems in PHP, Java/J2EE, and ASP.NET that have utilized MySQL databases through various database connectivity interfaces. Geoff received his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Virginia Tech and has worked in the software industry for 18 years. He specializes in software and database architecture and development as it relates to Webbased systems. He has worked with several database products in addition to MySQL, including SQL Server, DB2, and Oracle. He has also developed a variety of software applications that have connected to various databases using several different languages and platforms including Java J2EE/JDBC/EJB, C++/ODBC, and ASP.NET/ODBC/OLEDB.
Geoff’s publishing credits include “Passing Arrays Between Jscript and C++” (September 7, 2000, ASPToday.com, under WROX) and three articles published in Windows & .NET Magazine (online): “Common Internet Hacker Attacks” (December 1, 1998), “Remote Web Administration, Part 2” (November 1, 1998), and “Remote Web Administration, Part 1” (October 1, 1998). Geoff works as an independent software consultant in the Washington D.C. metro area. When he is not in front of the keyboard, he enjoys photography, mountain biking, hiking, and international travel.

As you can see...

I found this book to be very informative, and the authors quite knowledgeable. Stylistically, however, they have a tendency to spoon feed the reader. I have crossed out more than ONE HUNDRED instances of the phrase "as you can see." The use of meaningless redundancies is a crutch that becomes a distraction to the reader. I also think the book could have been better proofread as I've found many slips, like saying parenthesis when they mean single quotes. The term "STRAIGHT JOIN" is written with an underscore in *every* instance - "STRAIGHT_JOIN" is not valid mysql syntax.

Learn MySQL here

This book is still sitting on the shelf. There's nothing wrong with it. It's just that you need to know programming before you buy this book and attempt to understand what it is talking about. It is not for beginners. Yes, it says Beginning MySQL. You are a beginner at MySQL. Otherwise it is a very good book. I know enough now to understand quite a bit of what it is saying, but I'm not ready to take it on just yet. Thanks

About the Author
Peter Gregory, CISA, CISSP, is a career IT guy who has worn just about every hat that could be worn in the Data Processing/Information Systems/Information Technology business. Peter has IT experience in government, banking, nonprofit, legalized gambling, and telecommunications. The Usenet-E-mail-Internet bug bit him in the mid 1980s. He has spent the past eleven years in two wireless telecom companies, working in positions where he develops security policy, security architecture, and security emergency response teams, and is a security consultant in general.
His passion for computers is matched only by his dedication to helping people know how to use information systems — from personal computers to mainframes — more effectively and safely. He achieves this through his speaking appearances at security conferences, in ComputerWorld and other online publications, and through a security consulting company that he cofounded in 2002.

Michael A. Simon works as a computer security consultant in the Seattle area and the northwestern U.S. with clients in banking, e-commerce, health care, and biotechnology. Mike has been working in IT security for around 20 years and wrote his first programs on punched cards for an IBM mainframe in the early 1980s. Although he doesn’t get much chance to exercise his skills in COBOL or Fortran these days, he keeps a deck of blank IBM punch cards around just in case.
For the last 10 years, Mike has been working for the company that he cofounded with Corwin Low when the Internet was more innocent, and convincing people of security’s importance was a difficult task. Mike keeps busy assessing new threats for his clients, lecturing at Seattle University and the University of Washington, and advancing the public service goals of Northwest Security Institute, a non-profit that he helped to found.

Good Overview and Some Things You Can Do

There are some thing that you can do to fight SPAM and Spyware. But in spite of all that people are doing the problem continuous to grow. This book describes the current state of SPAM, spyware, and phising systems as of its publication date (April 22, 2005).

Unfortunately there is only so much that you can do without restricting yourself so much that e-mail becomes almost impossible for you to use. In the final analysis the authors talk about filters you can install, they talk about blocking software. But in the end, it comes down to users acting intelligently and not ordering the replica watches, the viagra (half of which is not viagra but just sugar pills), the things that increase the size of various body parts. And so far there seems to be enough people ordering that the spammers keep going.

I wonder why the officials in charge of this, whoever they may be, can't just follow the money. Where does the credit card get processed, where is the product shipped? If you stop people from benefiting, the spam will stop. There's probably a good reason.

A decent overview for the beginner

This was a curiosity read as somebody suggested I write a dummies book on spam since she thought one didn't exist.

This book is geared for people that have little or no knowledge of the setting up anti-spam/spyware. If you find yourself asking "I need to setup and anti-spam solution and I don't know where to begin" then this book could serve as an ok place to start.

This book is not for people looking for extra ideas to improve their current knowledge.

I liked the idea that spam and spyware were linked together as both worlds are finding a symbiotic relationship.

The first few chapters are good for the ignorant as they attempt to explain spam and spyware. There is also a chapter on the costs of spam and return on investment for setting up measures to stop it.

The next chapters deal with setting up a project to evaluate and install defense measures. I skimmed them as I already have solutions in place. They might be boring for some; especially if their setup is small or it's a one man IT shop.

The book seems to favor the windows world as Sendmail is only mentioned. There is no reference to spamassassin or postfix.

Another aspect I liked is the fact there are discussions about security in the realm of patching, etc. Many people don't understand that security can affect spam production.

Troubleshooting is rather lite. Which can be expected as such effort would be another book especially when considering what to do with malware infected machines.

Some of the information is getting dated as it mentions postini as it's own company and same failed standards attempts.

It has some useful Net links mentioned for getting more information. I think there could have been more but that's the authors prerogative.

There are 2 appendixes dealing with a project plan and project requirements for spam and spyware filtering people might find useful.

Some areas that are missing are Reputation filtering ala IronPort. There was no mention of spyware sites such as gain and the fact spyware companies are getting purchased by search engine companies and even software companies with antispyware products. It goes to show you how much can change in 3 years(book was published in 2005).

Overall, it's a decent baby steps book for the ill informed.

Never Expected it to Be This Good.....

Poetry for Dummies was another of those books I was really hoping I didn't like. The whole "For Dummies" series gets on my nerves to begin with, so it is double trouble when I picked this title up and found it valuable on so many counts.
The opening section: Poetry 101 is an excellent read and in and of itself makes the book worth the purchase.
Each chapter clearly marks the intent across the top and is chock filled with check lists, hints and suggestions for the reader AND the practicing (new and old alike) poet. I was thinking, "This will all be old hat, I am sure" until I saw the authors include the staff from The Poetry Center in San Francisco.
What poet or poet-in-the-making doesn't nod, smile and point when we read this affirmation? "Poetry has more meaning, music and emotion per words, per syllable, per letter than any other kind of writing." (I could have sworn I heard an "Amen!" from the crowd or maybe... that was me.)
The book also includes some very valuable appendices with websites and poetry organizations.
Excellent resource for all poets and the people who love them. Check this one out.

Simplifying the Obscure in Poetry

Poetry For Dummies is the first book of its kind to be readable, sensible and understandable. For the novice or the more proficient, it is a great source book. Lots of innovative ideas and suggestions as well as rock solid poetic info! The college course I took in Creative Poetry (an upper division course!) didn't give me the easy access and insight that this book did.
Guess I qualify as a "Dummie!"

Helpful for beginners!

It's good for getting acquainted with some famous poets and some poetic forms. I'd recommend it for high school students. For those with basic knowledge of poetry and meters and scheme, I'd recommend "How to Read a Poem: and fall in love with poetry" by Edward Hirsch, which helps with the art of interpreting. But it's not as easy reading as this book (which I applaud for it simplicity).

Excellent

I was trained by the author John Fischer at the CIA. He is an excellent teacher of the FoH Art. It is truely an art to wait on people and give the guest every thing they could possibly want or need. John is a great and excellent teacher that dove into the realms of the ways and hows and whats to do and when to do it sequences. I got to see him in action behind a bar one afternoon serving up as the bartender that did not show that day. He was knowledgable about wines and bar drinks showing some razzle dazzle! He was "the man" when I had him. Thanks John and for even signing my book...guy

Move over remarkable service.

I attended the Culinary Institute of America and was trained by Mr. Fischer. I cannot imagine a single resource that does so much to demistify the key essentials of successful service than this reference. I recommend it to anyone in the industry or interested in the industry. The old standard (the bible until now) for front of the house reference has been remarkable service. An information filled text-book but a remarkably boring and mundane read. Entertaining, Original, Insightful, and Educational this is your one stop reading for front of the house.

Great Price for a Great Reference

I love this series of books as a supplemental math reference. I have the following: CliffsQuickReview Trigonometry, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and Calculus I and each one has been a definite lifesaver! Easy to follow and understand, provides practice problems that also show you step by step instruction, and has tips and tricks to help you learn. I would definitely recommend these to all that ask.

Great series... Great book.

I'm a (returning :P) university Freshman preparing for the College Board CLEP tests. I was already familiar with the material covered in this book, but needed to refresh my memory. This review turned out to be *exactly* what I needed.
The author's ability to explain the material to the student are just shy of enlightening. The discussions & theorem proofs are written in a very concise, clear style.
I'm a big advocate of the Cliff's QuickReview series. Intended as a course supplement, these books are also *GREAT* for students wanting to refine their skills. Most of them are also very accessible to students with less familiarity on the subject; trying to learn it for the first time.
After reading this, I bought the Calculus & Differential Equations QuickReviews & I'm looking forward to reading them!

This book's title sure sounds a little scary, but as its often-hilarious testimonials from first-time parents show, expectant parents frequently feel really stupid. Like the vast majority of For Dummies books, this one is supremely organized and indexed to help you find the answer to most any question, especially the embarrassing ones you may be reluctant to ask your doctor ("Is it okay to have sex in the last trimester?" "How long does it take the ugly conehead effect to go away after birth?") and the more serious ones ("Can I breast-feed while I'm on the Pill?").

Unlike many pregnancy books, this one has plenty of helpful information for the mother's partner, including ways to deal with vicious mood swings, helpful tips for preparing for childbirth class, and seven tricks for easing her labor pain--even if she's threatening that you'll never have sex again. Besides chapter after chapter of information about pregnancy's physical aspects and how to stay comfortable during the next 40 weeks, there's also plenty of advice on emotional issues--from learning how to say "hands off!" to the pesky people who want to rub your belly to coping with postpartum blues. Some readers may be offended by the book's slightly warped sense of humor (example: "breast engorgement really sucks"), but the authors never treat serious topics in an off-base way. The book's definitely geared toward first-time parents, but for moms and dads confused by the many new medical tests and modern options (such as the doula [pregnancy coach] dilemma or decision to freeze the baby's umbilical cord or not), there's a fine education to be had between this book's covers.

Common sense approach to pregnancy

I'm 36, overweight, hypertensive, and having my first baby. I wish Pregnancy for Dummies had been the first pregnancy book I had purchased. I purchased three others before I finally got this - in my third trimester - after I rented the DVDs. This book is very straightforward and has sense of humor. I took a childbirth class chock full of info on natural childbirth, breathing, relaxing, etc. This book was a great companion to the class - a basic primer. If you need additional information, go ahead and buy a couple more books (25 is probably overkill, though. It's a baby, not a thesis).

Two of the books I purchased prior -- What to Expect When You're Expecting and the Mother of All Pregnancy Books were loaded with every horrible thing that can happen at every stage of pregnancy. Loads more information on genetic problems than you need in a normal pregnancy. Heaven forbid if you eat a Twinkie at 22 weeks!! I thought they were both alarmist. My AFP test said I had a higher chance for Down's Syndrome. I went to my amniocentesis test convinced that even if the baby tested fine that the amnio itself would cause me to miscarry. Long story short - the baby is fine and the amnio wasn't a big deal (just don't look at the needle!).

I think today that most women understand they need to stop drinking and smoking, take prenatal vitamins, eat some vegetables, and see an OB. If they don't know already, then I can't imagine they'd be buying any pregnancy books anyway.

Best pregnancy resource I've found!

I love the for dummies books and this book was no exception. These books are great to read from cover to cover or you can read any segment and find just the bit of information you're looking for. I feel very prepared for my pregnancy and know what to expect and when I should be on the phone with my doctor. I've recommended it to all of my pregnant friends and I would recommend it to anyone else who is pregnant or who is trying to become pregnant.

This is my first time being pregnant and i didn't want to be overloaded with useless information.

This book is to the point and easy to understand.

My husband is also reading it and he enjoys the info he is getting out of it.

Considering Organic Chemistry is probably one of the toughest subjects to dumb down, this book does an awesome job at it! I really found it to be very helpful when I needed additional help over something my professor hadn't cleared up so well in lecture. I have recommended this book to many of my fellow classmates and will continue to do so.

A good ADJUNCT to Orgo

This text exceded my expectations. I had an Organic Chemistry class that focused on, and taught from, a Physical Chemistry prospective. Great if you've already taked Organic I and II, horrible if you're starting in Organic I.

This text covers the Reactions covered in most traditional organic courses, and also covers the Molecular Orbital Theories usually emphasised in P. Chem. It was more than helpful. :)

Just like Chemistry for Dummies, this text covers all of first semester Orgo 1, scratches the surface of the beginning of semester two, and thats it.

Of course, its not going to cover everything, or it would be a textbook, but it covers the 'need to know' topics, and explains them well.

This is a great adjunct to the text and course. To be honest, it really didn't make any sense until I had taken the course and learned what I was reading.

This has great information that your prof. may have left out, And/Or it usually has a different way of explaining something, which may help or enforce what you've already learned.

For example: The Diels Alder reactions... in my Orgo class, we had a 1/2 page section on it in our notes, did 1 'practice problem', and were told to, "make sure you know this for the test". This book definately saved me here, with a thourough explanation of how, why, what to do, etc. I fully understood the reaction (I read it before class , but none of it made any sence, but going to class turns on the 'light bulb' and reading it before class is a great way to make learning orgo I much easier).

There are a few other adjuncts out there that may help, the standard deviants 3 vhs set, "the deep fried world of organic chemistry" may be helpful.

great book

I bought this book back in February for a trip to San Francisco with my husband. I've been to San Francisco before around 13 years ago, but it was my husband's first trip to San Francisco. We carried the book with us all the time and the tips that it gave us were excellent, everything worked out great. For example, we did not rented a car and we made it all the way to the Golden gate bridge outside the city, following the book's tips to use the public bus. Another great tip, was to buy a three-day ticket to the MUNI (and it worked for bus, cable cars and electric cars). The restaurant suggestions for Chinatown and The Mission District were great. Good tips on how to avoid tourists traps. Great tips on planning itineraries and we felt like we saw all the most important attractions/sights in San Francisco. We hit a rainy afternoon and all we had to do was turn our book on the page on what to do if it's raining, great! I will defenetily buy books from these series again.

I was disappointed overall with the transportation information, especially when the book gave incorrect directions to the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market. Above all, a guidebook should be accurate. This book definitely isn't.

Like all the "Dummies" travel guides, this book is the best! Written in a conversational style, the information is broken down in easy to read chunks. The recommendations were all spot-on (don't miss Dottie's True Blue Cafe!) and the maps were invaluable!

PC Recording Studios For Dummies (For Dummies)

The book is not bad for someone who is new to recording; although, the technical information written in the book is outdated! Author mentioned for example that USB2 is brand new think in computing; I have USB2 for several years and the copyright of this book is 2005! Also while writing of this book, author use Mac computer and not PC as mentioned in the title of this book. In examples of software, author works with Mac software costing $1000 and another software (Pro Tools) that run on both, PC and Mac. Author mentioned in the book, that 32 track recording software is not sufficient. The version of Pro Tools that is not limited to 32 tracks starts at $4000. Author should use examples for Sonar or Cubase to keep trend with home recording engineers. Those software are professional quality and financially friendlier. About $500.

I would like to conclude my review. If you want a book that explain you basic of home recording and you are willing to do extensive research about software and hardware through Internet or other sources, the book is for you. From the other hand, hardware and software for recording is changing so rapidly that you would have to make some research anyway, though, this book would be actual about 5 years ago. Myself, I wouldn't buy this book if I new how outdated information it contained.

Beginners book

I had no idea on how to do PC recording, now I know. However, I put 4 star instead of 5 because of the book is not up-to-date enough. The PC requirement descriped in the book is kinda old, I think they need to keep the book update for every year (if that is possible). For example, 1G or 2G RAM is quite common these days, but the book still staying in the 256-512M age. But in general, it is a great book on how to start out on PC recording.

Not bad at all

In a world of rapidly advancing technology, it is understandably difficult to write a book based upon technology that is not quickly outdated. As such, the 2005 copyright might incite some immediate hesitation. Unfortunately, there is not a significant amount of comparable reading material with regard to this subject matter which has been written more recently. However, in this case, there is relatively little to fear. In my opinion, the core concepts still apply, and the reader is simply forced to replace the written "currently available" this or that with what one knows to now be available in terms of both hardware and software.

This work is a legitimate help to inexperienced readers who are seeking to wet their palate or gain a better understanding of the home recording process. In fact, the material found within ranges from the most basic of basic to fairly complex subject material, and much of what should be between. The only drawbacks might be (other than the date issue) the fact that the author focuses primarily on Pro Tools and Logic; however, if the reader prefers either Pro Tools or Logic this would be a significant advantage. Even this is understandable when considering the veritable plethora of available software options, and I commend the author for even covering two of the major players at such great depths. Furthermore, the author, at least, attempts to take an unbiased approach while explaining processes involving both Macs and PCs. Overall, if the title appears to pertain to what it is that you are looking for, the purchase is probably worth it if not only until an updated version is available.
