About the Author
Simon Robinson is the editor-in-chief of ASP Today, one of the leading sites related to Web programming on the Windows platform. Simon’s first experience of commercial computer programming was in the early 1980s, when a computer project he was working on at college became the school’s student timetabling program, running on the BBC Micro. Later he studied for a Ph.D. in physics and subsequently spent a couple of years working as a university physics researcher. From there he moved on to working as a computer programmer, then writing books about programming, and finally on to his present job at ASP Today.
He has an extremely broad experience of programming on Windows. These days his core specialty is .NET programming. He is comfortable coding in C++, C#, VB, and IL, and has skills ranging from graphics and Windows Forms to ASP.NET to directories and data access to Windows services and the native Windows API.
Simon lives in Lancaster, UK. His outside interests include theater, dance, performing arts, and politics. You can visit Simon’s Web site, http://www.SimonRobinson.com.

Christian Nagel is an independent software architect and developer who offers training and consulting on how to design and develop Microsoft .NET solutions. He looks back to more than 15 years’ experience as a developer and software architect. Christian started his computing career with PDP 11 and VAX/VMS platforms, covering a variety of languages and platforms. Since the year 2000—when .NET was just a technology preview—he has been working with various .NET technologies to build distributed solutions. With his profound knowledge of Microsoft technologies, he has also written numerous .NET books; is certified as Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT), Solution Developer (MCSD), and Systems Engineer (MCSE); and is the Microsoft Regional Director for Austria. Christian is a speaker at international conferences (TechED, DevDays, VCDC) and is the regional manager of INETA Europe (International .NET User Group Association) supporting .NET user groups. You can contact Christian via his Web site, http://www.christiannagel.com.

Jay Glynn started writing software nearly 20 years ago, writing applications for the PICK operating system using PICK basic. Since then, he has created software using Paradox PAL and Object PAL, Delphi, VBA, Visual Basic, C, C++, Java, and of course C#. He is currently a Project coordinator and Architect for a large financial services company in Nashville, Tennessee, working on software for the TabletPC platform. He can be contacted at jlsglynn@hotmail.com.

Morgan Skinner began his computing career at a tender age on a Sinclair ZX80 at school, where he was underwhelmed by some code a teacher had written and so began programming in assembly language. After getting hooked on Z80 (which he believes is far better than those paltry 3 registers on the 6502), he graduated through the school’s ZX81s to his own ZX Spectrum.
Since then he’s used all sorts of languages and platforms, including VAX Macro Assembler, Pascal, Modula2, Smalltalk, X86 assembly language, PowerBuilder, C/C++, VB, and currently C#. He’s been programming in .NET since the PDC release in 2000, and liked it so much, he joined Microsoft in 2001. He now works in Premier Support for Developers and spends most of his time assisting customers with C#.
You can reach Morgan at http://www.morganskinner.com.

Karli Watson is a freelance author and the technical director of 3form Ltd (http://www.3form.net). Despite starting out by studying nanoscale physics, the lure of cold, hard cash proved too much and dragged Karli into the world of computing. He has since written numerous books on .NET and related technologies, SQL, mobile computing, and a novel that has yet to see the light of day (but that doesn’t have any computers in it). Karli is also known for his multicolored clothing, is a snowboarding enthusiast, and still wishes he had a cat.

Bill Evjen is an active proponent of the .NET technologies and community-based learning initiatives for .NET. He has been actively involved with .NET since the first bits were released in 2000 and has since become president of the St. Louis .NET User Group (http://www.stlusergroups.org). Bill is also the founder and executive director of the International .NET association (http://www.ineta.org), which represents more than 125,000 members worldwide. Based in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, Bill is an acclaimed author and speaker on ASP.NET and XMLWeb services. He has written XMLWeb Services for ASP.NET, Web Services Enhancements: Understanding the WSE for Enterprise Applications, Visual Basic .NET Bible, and ASP.NET Professional Secrets (all published by Wiley). Bill is a Technical Director for Reuters, the international news and financial services company. He graduated from Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington, with a Russian language degree. You can reach Bill at evjen@yahoo.com.

An excellent book
By MT
I am an experienced C/C++ programmer, and I'm moderately familiar with writing windows applications in Visual C++ 6.0, having developed a few simple dialog-based apps in the past. Given this background, Professional C# is an excellent introduction to using the .NET framework and developing windows applications in C#. Unlike some other C# books, it doesn't waste much time with the very basics of programming, it gets right to the point and covers the C# language itself with a good balance of detail and speed, offering useful comparisons between C# and other languages such as VB and C++. That said, I wouldn't recommend this book for beginning programmers.

I originally thought that C# was "just a new type of C++", but once you try to learn the fundamentals of C# you realize that C# by itself is actually a just small part of the learning process. Rather, C# is intimately tied to microsoft's .NET framework, and learning the overall concepts of .NET is the real challenge. This book covers a LOT of material since C# and .NET encompass a surprisingly large set of concepts. Overall, I am somewhat amazed and very impressed at how much detailed and well-written information is crammed into this book.

A huge weakness of this book is the incredible number of errors, which range from simple typos, to repeated words, to more serious omissions and coding errors. Don't take my word for it -- if you look at the errata page on the Wrox Press website, there are currently 200 publisher-confirmed clarifications and errors listed for this book! (This number is probably an underestimate, IMO.) It also took me by surprise that the appendices are not included in the book, but are available as PDFs on the website. At first I thought the missing appendices were the biggest error yet, but apparently this was done on purpose. This becomes even more confusing because this results in ~200 skipped pages in the book, it jumps from page 1135 to 1307, and yet there are many index items that point to pages in that range (these are italicized). Overall, the missing pages cheapen the book and seem more like a publishing blunder rather than something that was planned from the start.

Apparently this book is available in downloadable form for ~$30 (?) as a PDF, I wonder if some/all of the errors have been corrected and the appendices are included in the electronic version.

Looong Read
By N. Olsen
I was disappointed for several reasons, especially since this book is labeled as being part of the "Programmer to Programmer" series:

1> Overly long with trite examples covering up the real essence. They often take several pages to convey an idea which, assuming the reader is an experienced programmer, should only take a few sentences.

2> That this is a collective effort shows. Some chapters are half-way decent, others are rather poor.

3> No help for the programmer on how to leverage existing code in C# .NET modules.

4> Very little on how things work, or why they are the way they are. This makes remembering the quirks of the language / framework rather difficult.

Good C# intro for experienced c++/Java programmers.
By A. Rokicki
Do not buy this book if you are just learning to program. It does not cover good programming practices and syntaxes such as: for, while etc.

That said.

I have a lot of programming books, and this one is above average.

If you are experienced programmer this is good introduction to C#. Also it could serve as a good reference once you get going.

Authors are a bit Microsoft centric but this is C# and it is Microsoft product.

I used this book to work on my first C# project and it was very helpful.

So if you are experienced C++ or Java programmer and looking to get into C# this book is a buy.

Good luck learning.

A Comprehensive Look at Starting a Non-Profit
By Scott FS
I wanted to start a small not-for-profit to raise money for cancer research. But where to start? May I suggest this book?

First of all, this isn't a book for the already established, huge foundation. It's for someone (like me) who not only knows nothing about the subject, but doesn't even know where to begin.

The book covers the subject from getting started, incorporating the non-profit, writing a mission statement, applying to the IRS for tax-exempt status (hugely important!), and finding the right people to help you make your dream come true.

The second part of the book is devoted to running the non-profit. This includes setting up a board of directors, hiring staff (or working with volunteers), planning for the future, and managing money.

The third part of the book is perhaps the heart of the matter - raising money.

Understand this is a first step. It isn't the only book you'll buy if you get your non-profit up and running, but it is an excellent place to start.

Read the book and take notes. Every state has different requirements, and you'll need to contact the state agency that regulates non-profits to get the forms, filing requirements, etc. There is a lot to learn, but the book is well organized, and packed with information.

You might also research a few other books to help you with the filing process. And I think it will be important to look for as many fund-raising ideas as you can, anywhere you can find them.

Good for what it is
By Roger Wagoner
In short, this book provides 410 pages of a simple, focused intro to the game that benefits gamers that are more experienced as well.

The book is divided into five main parts: Chapters one through nine focus on a "D&D Crash course". The focus is on starting out in one of their recommended beginner classes - either fighter, rogue, sorcerer or cleric. Included are simple pre-made characters that will get you playing the game within minutes (assuming someone experienced is DMing). This section will most likely will only be useful for the absolute beginner. Anyone playing more than once or twice could probably skip this section - at least I have so far.

The second part is about "Building a D&D Character". There are chapters dedicated to defining your character, class, ability scores, races, feats, skills, armor (, weapons and gear), spells, and advancing your character. This second part will be very useful for beginning players, as character creation is time-consuming as well as difficult. There are several "trees", or paths recommended for each of the (beginner recommended) classes. For example, in the chapter on feats: there are 3 different "ladders" or paths showing feats for the first 10 levels for the sorcerer/wizard, cleric, fighter and rogue classes. The fighter ladders are melee fighter, skill fighter, and ranged fighter. E.g., the skilled fighter's feats include: 1st: Weapon focus (longsword) and Combat Expertise; 2nd: Dodge; 3rd: Mobility; 4th: Spring Attack; 6th: Whirlwind Attack; 8th: Weapon specialization (longsword); 9th: Improved Disarm; and 10th: Improved Trip. The book then goes on to highlight the strengths, weaknesses, and how to use a skill fighter in combat, and what not to do (e.g., attacking the nearest creature - you should use your higher AC to reach a more important target).

Part III is Playing your Best Game. This section includes tips and advice appropriate for those whom have played more than a couple of times. There is more detailed advice on tactics, group work, etc. E.g., Chapter 13 Handling Yourself in a Fight includes advice on fighting high-AC foes (grapple, flank and aid another) and high DR foes (power attack, sneak attack or magic). Even advanced players should gain something from this section.

Part IV focuses on Dungeon Mastering (DMing). I've never DM'd, but I plan to use this to help me get started DMing. The focus is to simplify the tasks involved in DMing: the book divides the DM's job into five groups, depending what the characters are doing: talking, exploring, fighting, setting up (the adventure) and free time. While those who have DM'd before will have more to comment on in this section, I can see what my previous DMs have done well and what they could've done better (if they had read this book).

The fifth part is the Part of Tens, basically top 10 lists. These include the best sorcerer (including wizard) and cleric spells, low- and mid- level monsters, DM and player resources and the best reading (Wizards of the Coast and others). The discussion of the spells was interesting, and should be especially helpful for beginner and intermediate players (or DMs).

For those of you who do not wish to use the beginner classes outlined, the book is limited. Very little is devoted to druids, paladins, barbarians, rangers, etc. Of course, this is an introductory book and they have to stop somewhere. I would have given this book 5 stars, but I thought the included map was close to useless, and was included just because Dummies book have an insert. That said, I recommend every D&D group get a copy of this book, as all players, from beginning to advanced, will be able to get some new ideas, tactics or inspiration for the game.

Edit: I double-checked the page count, and cannot figure out how they claim to have 432 pages in this book. 410 pages, which I wrote, includes the index. There are 412 pages if you include 2 pages worth of ads for other D&D products.

Exactly what i expected!
By A. Land
This book is exactly what I expected from the authors - a well written, useful resource. I have over 10 years playing many editions of D+D and wanted to see what some of the experts had to say and to see their opinions on some of the top 10 lists. I have gleaned some useful information for myself, a person who knows quite a bit, but definately not all of it. Having bought over 40 different resource books, I would rank this among my top 10.

Another very, very obvious use for this book is the benefit it gives newcomers to the game. When 3rd edition first came out, my gaming group drudged through the book for many a session before we finally started to understand the new concepts. D&D for Dummies puts the new ideas, combat maneuvers, some spells, and the confusing Attack of Opportunities in true Dummy book plain English. It is becoming a semi-mandatory read for newbies in my gaming group, it is that useful. It gives a great foundation before attacking the more detailed Players Handbook.

My review is slightly biased, but not overmuch. I am a fan of both authors, the Books for Dummies series (of which I own 8), and obviously D&D. I will say, that if the book was a waste of money, like about 10 D&D resource books I own, I would definately give a negative review. I am glad, however, to give this a high review.

One of the more helpful guides even for us grognards
By Kindle Customer
Interesting batch of reviews this item has generated. As several others, I've being playing RPGs for a very long time (26 yrs). When 3.0, and then 3.5 came out, I felt that a rather simple game had become very complicated. I have sat and read both Player's Manuals, both DMGs, and utilize all 3 Monster Manuals. I still felt somewhat lost and unable to thoroughly and correctly run a game according to all of the new rules. This book changed a lot of that. It is enjoyable to read and explains the rules in a way that really helps you to integrate them into your game. I guess even with my experience I must still qualify as a "Dummy" because I found this book very enlightening and helpful. I highly recommend this book for anyone who needs to either learn the game anew or for anyone who still has questions about 3.0 (and 3.5).

Fabulous Introduction to Latin
By Laura De Giorgio
This book is designed for absolute beginners. Whether you're interested in mastering Latin language, or you'd like to get better insight in English, given the fact that more than half of English words have Latin roots, this book will introduce you to Latin in a light-hearted way.

You'll enjoy the book from cover to cover, as you learn not only some basics of Latin language, but also read many interesting stories about Roman customs and culture.

You will learn about some well-known writers, as well as the common Latin terms used in law, medicine, zoology, botany and church.

The authors have made sure not only to help you learn something, but also to keep you entertained with many humorous tidbits and an addition of fun and games to test your knowledge.

Another Great Dummy book
By iamspy007
I need to learn both Spanish and French. Within a year I need to know just enough to get by. I felt that the task was a little high. A friend that speaks 9 languages made a suggest. Learn Latin first because it is the root of Spanish, French and English.

I have gone through the entire Latin course and I am now on to Spanish. Gee, am I glad I did the Latin first. My friend was right. I had tried to learn Spanish before and I was lost. By learning some Latin learning Spanish is now much easier.

I did the Rosetta Stone and read this book on the side. The two together make a great combination.

Good Book
By A Customer
(Editor has since rectified the WL6.1 problem.)
The book is understandable enough but he bases the downloadable code on WebLogic 6.1--and only 6.1. Well, that is no longer available. So, you will waste endless hours trying to figure out how to make even the simplest example run. This simple fact breaks every single one of the scripts. I was ready to pull my hair out. Why in the world doesn't he update the source code? It kills me. The book does not come with any CD and so you rely on the downloaded code examples. But they cannot be run unless you figure out what to change. It has driven me nuts. Until he updates the example source code to work with a server that is currently available, I would not recommend this book. You will get only an academic understanding of EJBs and--without practical experience--that's useless. He also way glosses over how to execute the test clients. When you examine the scripts they contain all kinds of security provisions that are ignored in the appendix. So, if you're trying to fend for yourself, you're hosed. I WISH I HADN'T BOUGHT THIS!

Good introductory book.
By A Customer
I'm a software engineer, experienced with Java, server side programming and perf & scalability issues in general, and with both an academic and an industry background. New to EJB, which is why I read this book.
This book is actually 4 stars as an introductory book. It got me to up to speed with EJB, enough to understand it's programming paradigm fairly well. However, where I'm trying to go is to deeply understand perf. and scalability issues that will arise for large deployments (millions of users, for e.g) and exactly what EJBs offer in that area. Although clustering and transactions are discussed, the level of detail I need is greater - techniques for optimal caching are only skimmed, not thoroughly discussed. Additionally, one or more of the authors has this rather irritating habit of using the wrong terminology. Cases in point:
1) "The Halting Problem" of computer science is, rather cheekily exemplified by a program that blocks forever. Check it out for yourself from other sources - that is NOT the halting problem. It isnt that simple.
2) "Store and forward" is again, rather cheekily, described as "spool messages and send them when the queue comes back up". No, that is not what it is. Check it out for yourself from other sources. It is originally a networking term used in a different context. Simply because you are storing and forwarding doesnt mean you unilaterally christen your technique "store-and-forward", without investigating the original and well-known usage of the term.
3) "Reliability" in the term RAS (Reliability, Availability, Serviceability) is exemplified by - "if the simplest request takes 10ms to complete with one user, the system is reliable if the same request takes 10ms with 1,000,000 concurrent users.". That is NOT the definition of reliability. Reliability has more to do with fault detection and avoidance, not what is mentioned above, which seems more to do with throughput.
These are only a few of the incorrectly used terms. To most, I am only nitpicking. But for those who really want to go deep and do not want to waste 30-40% of their time reconciling terminologies, this is important. If the authors dispensed with trying to rename and falsely name common terms, their ideas would be communicated quicker, at least to audiences who are used to the well-known meanings of common terms.

Professional Assembly Language, by Richard Blum

  • Unlike high-level languages such as Java and C++, assembly language is much closer to the machine code that actually runs computers; it's used to create programs or modules that are very fast and efficient, as well as in hacking exploits and reverse engineering
  • Covering assembly language in the Pentium microprocessor environment, this code-intensive guide shows programmers how to create stand-alone assembly language programs as well as how to incorporate assembly language libraries or routines into existing high-level applications
  • Demonstrates how to manipulate data, incorporate advanced functions and libraries, and maximize application performance
  • Examples use C as a high-level language, Linux as the development environment, and GNU tools for assembling, compiling, linking, and debugging

Professional Assembly Language

Every high level language program (such as C and C++) is converted by a compiler into assembly language before it is linked into an executable program. This book shows you how to view the assembly language code generated by the compiler and understand how it is created. With that knowledge you can tweak the assembly language code generated by the compiler or create your own assembly language routines.

This code-intensive guide is divided into three sections — basics of the assembly language program development environment, assembly language programming, and advanced assembly language techniques. It shows how to decipher the compiler-generated assembly language code, and how to make functions in your programs faster and more efficient to increase the performance of an application.

What you will learn from this book:

  • The benefits of examining the assembly language code generated from your high-level language program
  • How to create stand-alone assembly language programs for the Linux Pentium environment
  • Ways to incorporate advanced functions and libraries in assembly language programs
  • How to incorporate assembly language routines in your C and C++ applications
  • Ways to use Linux system calls in your assembly language programs
  • How to utilize Pentium MMX and SSE functions in your applications

About the Author
Richard Blum has worked for a large U.S. government organization for more than 15 years. During that time, he has had the opportunity to program utilities in various programming languages: C, C++, Java, and Microsoft VB.NET and C#. With this experience, Rich has often found the benefit of reviewing assembly language code generated by compilers and utilizing assembly language routines to speed up higher-level language programs.
Rich has a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University, where he worked on many assembly language projects. (Of course, this was back in the eight-bit processor days.) He also has a master of science degree in management from Purdue University, specializing in Management Information Systems.

Good at explaining the basics
By Yuri Slobodyanyuk
About the syntax used - yes, through all the book only the AT&T assembly syntax is used. The obvious reason is that most popular compiler on Linux is GCC, which has GAS (GNU Assembler) as the behind the scenes assembler invoked by GCC every time you compile your code. And native to GAS is the AT&T syntax and not the Intel syntax, which is deemed more readable.

Now to the book contents. As there is no previous knowledge of assembly assumed, the reader is first given a quite detailed view of the Intel processors architecture, including coverage of modern features like the Netburst design, present in modern Pentium series processors. Then basics of the tools of the trade are presented.

With this preliminary knowledge the reader is prepared to begin the major part of the book - the assembly language itself.

The learning curve is flattened as much as possible by the author, guiding us through all the major domains of assembly programming - working with processor registers, stack and heap manipulation, floating point arithmetic, handling various data types (strings, integers, floating point numbers) and more.

All the chapters contain stand alone code examples ready to be compiled and run. Most of the example code is 30-40 lines long and relates to the particular point being explained, i.e. there's no intentional cross-reference between code samples in different chapters.

Starting at the chapter 12, "Linux System Calls", begins what this book was written for - how to apply gathered so far knowledge to the real world. This includes: inline assembly in C/C++ code, programs combining C/C++ source code

and assembly functions, writing static/dynamic libraries in assembly that can be used by any high-level language (here C/C++), optimization tips and tricks, how to work with files.

Finally, the last chapter deals with advanced features like MMX, SSE, and SSE2 instructions .

So, to conclude - It has all a

programmer never exposed to assembly needs to learn to start writing fully functional stand alone or integrated into high-level language assembly code . The author covers all fundamentals of assembly programming and he does it in a plain and accessible language.

However there's something you should be aware of - if you're (like me) a fan of the Wrox "Professional.." series,- don't misunderstand the word in this context. It is only an introductory text on assembly, and it will not bring you to the level of professional assembly programmer, yet.

Explains the trivial, misses the essentials; Not for those who REALLY want to learn Assembly Language.
By Paco Garcia
The reason why I bought this book was because I have loved some of the books published by Wrox for years and I thought that I could use this book to learn the essentials of Assembly Language and what I can do with it. As with all books from all publishers, there will always be some "hits" and "misses". Unfortunately, for Wrox (and for me), this is one of the "misses" for me.

Let me start off with the title; this is NOT worthy of the "Professional" moniker of Wrox's series. I have read some books of Wrox which did deserve the moniker, and the content and the essentials were in the right places. This book in particular is somewhat of a "Beginning Assembly Language with Less Significant Information" moniker, to be more precise.

Here are a couple of examples from the book that I absolutely abhor:

A. Lack of explanation in the right places, but supposedly is explained elsewhere.

In page 77, in the "The Sample Program" section, the author has the reader's attention, in what will hopefully be some code with more than sufficient explanation. I was extremely disappointed when I read this right after the last line of code (my emphasis in CAPS included):

"This program uses quite a few different assembly language instructions. FOR NOW, DON'T WORRY TOO MUCH ABOUT WHAT THEY ARE; THAT WILL BE DESCRIBED IN DETAIL IN SUBSEQUENT CHAPTERS. FOR NOW, CONCENTRATE ON HOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ARE PLACED IN THE PROGRAM, THE FLOW OF HOW THEY OPERATE, AND HOW THE SOURCE CODE FILE IS CONVERTED INTO AN EXECUTABLE PROGRAM FILE."

I was flabbergasted. Why would the author put in so much non-essential code in a demo program when he will simply tell us to skip the "few different assembly language instructions"?

First of all, if the author wanted to demonstrate a simple program where he wants us to focus on "how the instructions are placed in the program, the flow of how they operate, and how the source code file is converted into an executable program file", then a classic "Hello, world" example where the text "Hello world" is printed on the terminal screen would have been more than sufficient for this program. I did not understand how the flow of how the program operated until I explicitly researched it on the internet. I did NOT learn the flow of the program from this book. This only led to more questions than answers, e.g.

"Why did he put that much numbers of the letter 'x' in the ascii variable"?,
"Why did he call the cpuid program like that? Isn't there a call keyword needed?",
"Where did that 42 value come from, and why is he moving it to the EDX register? Why not the ECX register or any other registers? Why did it have to be the EDX register? Why did he use 42 as the value? Did he just magically think of a random number and decided on 42 and put it in the register?"

Another example can be found in page 103. It is more of the same thing. Here's an excerpt after some sample code which supposedly demonstrates how to use indexed memory locations:

"Don't worry too much about the auxiliary code used in this example. All of these instructions are covered in later chapters. Concentrate on how the program manipulates the data array defined."

First of all, what, for the author, is considered 'auxiliary' code? If these are going to be covered in later chapters, please specify where so we can fold the page, look them up and go back to the topic. Like the previous example, this demo program leaves more questions than answers, e.g.

"What is 'nop'? What is its use? Why is it there?"
"What is 'cmpl'? Does it stand for 'complain'? Because that is exactly what I am doing."
"What is jne loop?"

B. No lack of explanation to more trivial contents

Turn to page 24 of the book and you will learn about the Retirement Unit and Execution Unit. Turn to the next page and you learn about Low-latency Integer Execution unit and Complex-integer execution unit. Flip through the pages and you can see definitions of flags and registers, but no explanation when, how or why use them; there isn't even a note on whether or not we are going to use them. Instead, the reader is given classic textbook "An elevator is something that elevates" definitions - a list of terms which are described, but nothing more. Definitions are OK, but when are we going to use all of these? If we're not going to use it in code or if it is not going to serve a purpose later on in the book (which should be stated if that were the case, by the way), why even bother bringing it up? It's like reading a book on the essentials of C and a whole chapter is dedicated to the history of the B programming language, an almost-extinct programming language which would be superseded by C, which is entirely beside the point of learning the essentials of C. The worst part of this is that it's not just one chapter dedicated to this - as you read along, you will find trivial information such as

Here are my suggestions to improve this book. First, remove "Professional" in the title. It is NOT professional. Go with "Beginning" because it suits it more. Another suggestion is to make do without the trivial information, and focus on explaining anything and everything essential in Assembly Language. When I learn a language, I want all explanations about a demo program's code within 2 pages, and the reasoning for choosing the values and registers. The third and my final suggestion is to comment on EVERY LINE OF CODE. I'm serious. This is assembly language, the world of mnemonics and concatenated words, not C or some other high level language, where keywords which can be easily understood by humans are used.

There are more questions than answers as you try to follow along the code of this book. If you want to learn Assembly Language, look for another book elsewhere.

This book should not carry the word Professional in the title - it is basic - very basic at best. This book is all about the Intel architecture - e.g. Intel processors. The target audience for this book - as stated in the introduction - is C/C++ programmers interested in converting their (Linux) C/C++ programs to assembly language. Consider this book if you know nothing of assembly language and you want to play around with it in a Linux on Intel hardware environment. Do not buy this book if you are interested in writing anything more advanced than simple hello world real mode apps. More specifically - do not buy this book if your are interested in writing IA-32 protected mode code - none of those things are covered in the book.

The content of this book is wonderful but it was delivered a little more 'worn' than I would have liked. If I'd known it was going to look as 'used' as it was I would have purchased one NEW.
