Good to see Wrox back
By Amazon Customer
Development of the Apache project's Tomcat JSP and Servlet engine continues apace, and again, Wrox has done a good job in swiftly getting a book to market which covers the latest version.
Wrox's earlier book by many of the same authors, 'Professional Apache Tomcat' covered versions 3 and 4. This book no longer contains any material specific to version 3, but has had a major overhaul and concentrates on Tomcat 5, though it's still useful and relevant to administrators working with version 4.1 and up.
Like its predecessor, the book covers the installation and management of Tomcat in great depth on both Unix and Windows. Its Unix coverage is geared towards Linux in favour of any other version of Unix, but in practice there's nothing particularly Linux specific and users of other Unix variants will have no problems following the examples.
As with the previous edition, the first two chapters provide background to the Apache project, J2EE and the evolution of web application technologies from CGI to JSP. Detailed chapters on installation and architecture follow. Only installation of the Tomcat binaries is here though; building Tomcat from source with Ant is not discussed at all (however, Ant is referred to throughout the book, mainly in relation to application building and deployment, and gets an appendix of its own). The architecture description is unchanged from the previous edition, but remains an excellent overview of Tomcat's internal components.
And on to the nuts and bolts. A lot of space is given to the new web-based administration tool (itself a web application handled by Tomcat), but at all points the underlying affects on Tomcat's raw XML configuration files is made clear, so the command line junkies - or those who choose not to enable the Administration Tool at all - are catered for in parallel with the point-and-click brigade. Web application configuration and management is much expanded, now covering Servlet 2.4 descriptors as well as those for 2.3.
Tomcat's HTTP connectors, employed when Tomcat is set up as a stand alone web and application server are described in a single chapter, but new to this book are details of using the SSI and CGI servlets which are new features of Tomcat 4.x and 5.
For non-trivial installations, one would wish to integrate Tomcat with a web server, creating an environment in which the web server delegates dynamic content to Tomcat which otherwise no longer handles HTTP directly. There are a number of protocols available for Tomcat which provide the connection to a web server. As these protocols have stabilised in Tomcat, so the book no longer covers the older, largely deprecated connectors beyond a brief description of each. It then concentrates almost solely on the JK2 implementation of AJP.
This whole area is a lot clearer than it was in the earlier book: a short chapter provides the background and describes the protocols used to connect the web server and Tomcat, followed by a chapter devoted to each of Apache (for both Unix and Windows) and Microsoft's IIS web server using the JK2 connector. I was a little disappointed to find that Sun's web server gets no mention at all, particularly as up-to-date official documentation in relation to it appears to be non-existent. Nonetheless, what's here for Apache and IIS is very good; Apache users get a better deal than their IIS counterparts though - the load balancing and SSL integration sections are far more complete in the IIS chapter.
That completes the first half of the book, and for many uses will provide more than enough information to get a good understanding of Tomcat and a working service. Six more chapters go into great detail about Tomcat's other features. Separate chapters exploring JDBC connectivity, the new JMX features of version 5 and Java class loaders really earns the book its Professional tag. Arguably more useful (in my case at least) are the chapters dedicated to security, clustering for fail-safe operation and embedding Tomcat within an application - absolutely everything is here. The chapter on server load testing proved to be a great help to me just for the inclusion of the use of JMeter, another Apache project which is useful for all manner of web server benchmarking.
Tomcat's documentation is more than adequate for quickly setting up a Tomcat server, but dig much deeper and it quickly becomes difficult to find what you're looking for. Having a book like this with everything to hand makes life a lot easier, and in any case it's worth much more than the official documentation.
Criticisms? I'd like to have seen an appendix or two giving a summary of the main Tomcat configuration files workers2.properties and server.xml; as it is not quite everything is covered and what is spread across different chapters. At the moment I'm working with Sun's web server and Tomcat and it would have been great to have a chapter dedicated to this particular setup, particularly as far as JK2 is concerned.
Wrox had some difficulties last year when its parent company collapsed, but now that Wiley have taken over, it's good to see them back on their feet and continuing to produce books like this, complete with their familiar red covers (...and dodgy author photographs). Highly recommended.

Important tasks missing
By John G. Norman
There is a lot of good information in this book, and it's true that it gets into JMX, the web-based manager and admin apps, etc., etc.

But I have some real concerns with this book. Here are four everyday "real world" tasks that a professional really needs to know and that one is hard-pressed to find accurately and succinctly discussioned in this book: (1) JVM memory settings -- in what file to set them; (2) How to pre-compile JSPs so that they are not compiled "on the fly" after deployment (absolutely crucial for the real world); (3) how to define a context.xml file and put it in your app's META-INF directory; (4) How to get an app deployed to the root.

I hope the authors can address these issues in the next edition.

Here's some more detail on these issues:

(1) Memory settings: p. 417: Gives switches for memory optimization, but doesn't say what is the best file in the Tomcat deployment for updating such settings. (The info in "Shared Tomcat Hosting," pp. 392-393, doesn't help for the easy case.) There is no discussion that if you use the Windows Service, the memory settings are set through the "Configure Tomcat" GUI application (and catalina.bat isn't used). A *general* item for "memory settings" is not listed in the index under JVM.

(2) How to pre-compile JSPs: Nothing. A better book would provide a working ant target for this. jspc (and/or org.apache.jasper.JspC) isn't even in the index.

(3) How to use a context.xml file and put it in your web-app's META-INF: Nothing. This is incredibly important because it's how you would define a DataSource without having to meddle with the server.xml file.

(4) How to get an app deployed to the root path. While there is some discussion of the root (e.g., p. 92), I don't see anything that points out the crucial piece of information, which is that the .war must be named ROOT.war (you can deploy another .war to the root, but with some settings it won't get redeployed properly after a fresh startup).

-----

I also wish the discussion of the JK and JK2 connectors was more complete. The discussion of the internals are interesting, but you would never learn about the no-jk environment variable (crucial for getting Apache to skip JK for certain paths) for JK. And if there is such a feature for JK2 (I don't think there is), you'd never find it here.

In short, I keep this near my desk, but I probably wouldn't recommend it to someone.

A collection of articles
By Rais3dByWolv3s
This book contains some good information. However, it's clear that the publisher merely solicited a bunch of articles and sort of threw them together without much in the way of an overarching design. The result is that you can find answers to many common Tomcat questions in this book, but others will go unanswered.

I agree with the previous comments that this book has some major gaps in its coverage of the topic. I would also comment that some of the presentation is pretty confusing, such as the whole area of data source configuration, which is actualy covered TWICE. Which section of the book where it's covered are you supposed to follow? And, as it turns out, even though this subtopic is covered twice, they still don't manage to give a complete explanation, leaving out the important issue of setting up a context.xml file.

It's better than not having any Tomcat book at all, but this is not an exceptionally complete or well-organized book.

About the Author
Craig Kent Gygi began studying and applying the elements of Six Sigma well before they were formalized into today’s renowned breakthrough methodology. As a graduate student in mechanical engineering at Brigham Young University in the early 1990s, he integrated these cutting-edge improvement techniques into his coaching of student product development teams. Upon beginning his career in 1994 at Motorola’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Lab in Florida, he was formally introduced to the maturing Six Sigma method. It resonated deeply with his previous findings. From that time, Craig has applied, taught, and led Six Sigma in all his endeavors, including management and technical capacities at Motorola, Iomega, and General Atomics.
In 1998, Craig founded and led a software company to develop computational tools for Six Sigma practitioners. For several years, he also worked as a technical colleague of Dr. Mikel J. Harry, the original consultant of Six Sigma, co-developing and teaching new advances in its theory and application. Most recently, Craig has traded his mountain home in Utah for the Sonoran desert of Arizona to co-found Savvi International and direct and manage its Six Sigma products, services, and tools.
A Master Black Belt, Craig has wielded Six Sigma techniques now for over 12 years, spanning projects from design to manufacturing to business process management. He is also an expert teacher, having instructed and mentored at all levels of Six Sigma, from executives to White Belts.

Neil John DeCarlo has been a professional communicator in the continuous improvement and Six Sigma fields for more than 15 years, beginning with his work at Florida Power & Light company when it won the coveted Deming Prize for quality. Since that time, he has authored, ghostwritten, or edited more than 150 articles and six books in association with such companies as General Electric, Dupont, Bose Corporation, McKinsey consulting, UPS, AT&T, the Six Sigma Academy, and many others.
As a prolific author and writer, Neil’s past work has covered a range of subject matter, including Six Sigma, information technology, e-learning, knowledge management, change management, business integration, TQM, ISO, lean management, and other disciplines. He has also worked with several CEOs and consultants, including Japanese quality expert Dr. Noriaki Kano, and worked extensively with original co-architect of Six Sigma, Dr. Mikel Harry.
In addition to his writing pedigree, Neil has managed communication and publishing campaigns for a variety of companies and consulting firms, most notably, the Breakthrough Management Group, a Six Sigma, lean enterprise, and performance-improvement industry leader. While not working, Neil avidly practices Bikram yoga and contributes to that community through his advocacy and writing.

Bruce David Williams has been fascinated with complex systems since the launch of Sputnik on his third birthday. With undergraduate degrees from the University of Colorado in Physics and Astrophysics, he entered a career in aerospace systems, where he first encountered Six Sigma after Motorola won the inaugural Baldridge Award in 1988. Later, with graduate degrees in technical management and computer science from Johns Hopkins University and the University of Colorado, and as a member of the Hubble Telescope development team, he was intrigued by how breakdowns in the smallest components could lead to colossal system failures. He entered the Six Sigma industry in the mid-1990s, when he founded a software company to pursue product life-cycle traceability.
Bruce has since been founder and CEO of two Six Sigma research and technology firms, and is now Chairman and CEO of Savvi International, a provider of solutions for business performance improvement using Six Sigma, lean, and business process management techniques.

Title Should Be: Just Another Six Sigma Book
By Dedicated Black Belt
Title Should Be: Just Another Six Sigma Book

I guess I'm the dumb one, because I was expecting a book that simplified and clarified the Six Sigma process. After all, isn't that the purpose of the "for Dummies" series? Well, this book does neither.

On page 2 of the book, near the top of the page, it says, "Six Sigma For Dummies is ... a comprehensive, actionable description of the methods and tools of Six Sigma." A few lines later, however, it says that "...the field of Six Sigma is much too large to fit in only 400 pages." This indecision on the authors' goals permeates the whole book. The book has three authors, and as you read this book you suspect that they didn't collaborate at all on their approach to this topic.

For example, the statistics portion of the book is 165 pages long, with line after line after line after line of statistical info. Then you get to the "tool" section of the book, where you will supposedly learn how to actually apply the statistics. Even though at the beginning of this section it says, "You can't do Six Sigma without tools," the whole section of practitioner tools is less than 40 pages long. Only a brief overview is given of each tool, without enough detail for anyone to actually do Six Sigma work!

Sure, statistics are important for Six Sigma, but for a person just being introduced to Six Sigma, the coverage is excessive and not done all that well. If someone wants to learn statistics at this level, they would be far better off getting Basic Statistics, by Kiemele, Schmidt, and Berdine. If someone wants a general reference book for Quality, including Six Sigma, get the massive (over 800 pages) The Six Sigma Handbook, by Thomas Pyzdek. If someone wants a book that gives a practical and workable approach to Six Sigma in general, consider Statistics for Six Sigma Made Easy, by Brussee.

It isn't that anything presented in Six Sigma For Dummies is actually wrong. It's just, as an earlier reviewer observed, that the book does not have a target audience. And the book certainly doesn't fulfill the implied promise of a "dummies" book to simplify and clarify the subject.

Doesn't have a target audience
By Jeremy D. (Seattle)
If you're just curious about what six-sigma is this is a good, easy to understand, book. But it teaches you little that can be applied.

I'm in a company that is begining a six sigma effort and I am assisting the black and green belts in their work. I had wanted a book that would help me do the things I would probably be asked to assist with such as building a SIPOC diagram. Instead, the book is devoted almost entirely to telling you what the black belts do on a project (half of the 300 pages are about statistics and much of the remainder is about things like project charter). The obvious problem is that a book like this can't actually teach you to be a black-belt. So after 300 pages I know some statistical principles, but not enough to actually do anything with, and I know nearly nothing about how to assist a black belt on a project.

Before you say "but six sigma is all about statistics" let me say that I know that. Stats are the core, and doing them takes training. You will not learn to do six-sigma stats from this book. You will probably not learn much else from this book either.

Useful for Learners, Teachers & Leaders
By Six Sigma MBB
I work as a manager and Master Black Belt at a Fortune 100 company. This book has been very useful in my training of others. I just finished teaching a Six Sigma Black Belt course in which I referred students to this book to reinforce their learning and deepen their understanding. It has transformed the way I teach Six Sigma as well as the way my students learn it.

Not only am I suggesting that BB's and BB's-in-training get this book, but I'm also recommending that leaders who have GB's and BB's on their staffs read this book. It gives enough information for leaders to understand what their Six Sigma staff are going through in the trenches. And it also provides leaders with enough education to ask meaningful questions. (Nothing is worse than an uninformed leader trying to lead Six Sigma resources!)

Frommer's New York City with Kids, 6th Edition
By Amazon Customer
I have two things to rave about - the book and the service from Amazon.com.
First, the book. I wanted to take my 12-year-old son to New York City but had no idea how to plan it, not being terribly familiar with the city. The book made it so easy!
Not only does it describe in great detail the plusses and minuses of activities, it tells what ages are likely to enjoy the activity, the hours, the cost and even how to get there.
After just 2 hours of going through the book and looking at the terrific maps that break Manhattan into three parts, I was able to plan our four days to perfection. Because of the maps with each destination circled and numbered for easy reference, I knew where all the places were within an area, and we didn't waste time traveling on the same day from one extreme of the island to the other.
The restaurant section was terrific, too, and very "right-on."
Now about Amazon. com. I ordered my book at 9 a.m. one Saturday morning. To my amazement, it arrived just a little more than 48 hours later in my maibox! I've been raving about that to everyone.
All-in-all, my shopping experience was terrific and the book was terrific.

Informative guide for travel with kids
By A Customer
Having traveled several times to NYC as a couple, we were unsure as to what our plans would be with two boys, 2 & 6. This guide was invaluable. It is an excellent resource for families. It is particularly useful when choosing family outings, accommodations, & restaurants. Age guidelines & menu summaries are provided for each restaurant. Descriptions of hotels & rooms (& space in the rooms) are given. Lots of info on kids' activities that isn't readily available to a visitor such as shows & museums for children, playgrounds, & even tips for finding a public restroom. And much more. Phone #s, websites, pricing, & age guidelines are given for all. Plus, lots of tips for many popular destinations about waiting times, environment for a small child (or older child), etc. - all that info that parents of young children want! All in all a great guide.

Take it from a dummy: This book works!
By George Engebretson
As a card-carrying dummy, I opened "Small Business Marketing for Dummies" with high hopes. I wasn't disappointed: in great detail and in plain English, Barbara Findlay Schenck has produced an exhaustive, fact-packed, thoroughly enjoyable guide to marketing. While I've picked up a few tricks of the trade during my ten years in retail/distribution, both as a sole proprietor and in a partnership, Schenck's book shows me how much more I have to learn in this wide and fascinating arena. Besides serving as a powerful motivator, "Small Business Marketing for Dummies" is long on specifics: the hows and whys of reaching customers and bringing them back for more. The book's Internet chapters, for example, are chock full of Web sites and strategies completely new to me. Having read many other marketing resources over the years, I can say without equivocation that this one comes closest to being a bible of the genre. Even the most clueless among us can use the book as a kind of in-house consultant, an easy, expert guide through the labyrinth of marketing a small business.

Not just for dummies!
By lifjoy
Don't let the title mislead you. Even if you already have a background in marketing, you'll love this book-- I did.
Barbara Schenck clearly explains the jargon, terminology, value, and implementation details of each facet of marketing, using real-world (and often humorous) examples. This book is so accessible to non-marketeers that our company has made Chapter 21 (Customer Service) required reading for each member of our team.
This book is empowering, informative, inspirational. If you're rethinking your marketing (and what business isn't constantly obsessed with satisfying their customers), then make this book your road map. As instructed by the simple exercises in each chapter, I took notes while making my way through the book. Then following the instructions in the final chapters, I was able to create a Marketing Plan in just a few hours. I found the process invigorating, and our clients can already feel our enthusiasm-- and we haven't even started implementing yet!

Great guide for marketing your services
By Amazon Customer
I'm a big fan of this line of books. This one is great even if you work for a large company...but it's specifically for small business owners. I liked it becaue it offered easy to implement ideas and suggestions for marketing your business and growing sales. Marketing can be incredible fun if you let yourself enjoy it and this book offers some sound advice for those who want to try integrating things themselves without paying an outside consultant big bucks.

So far so good...
By Randall A. Morter
I got the book on Saturday and have read through about 1/2 of it as of Monday morning. It looks like a good reference book so far, and I'm sure I'll be using it some as I code. I just wanted to share some of my thoughts...

I've been using ASP 1-3 since about 1998 on fairly large scale production apps, so have some experience with it. I've tinkered with ASP.NET 1.x and have taken classes on it, but haven't worked with it on a production app yet.

I've ordered a couple of .Net 2.0 books, this was the first to arrive. I've been to the recent MS events RE: VS2005 including the launch event, and have been looking forward to getting this book to clear up some questions.

I really liked the explanation in the book regarding the new folders VS 2005 uses. Same for the overview of the IDE. I wish there was more coverage, but as mentioned, this book is about 1200 pages already. This subject needs multiple books to cover it all.

I like the writing style for the most part, better than some of the other Wrox books I've got (especially one dealing with Sharp Develop). The first few chapters are great (the IDE, etc.) but you can tell someone else wrote the chapters covering some of the components.

I'm learning a lot from this, but it's also leaving me with questions. For example, in .Net 1.1, you could set a default namespace for a web app which was then used for all the code you created. I don't see that in VS 2005, nor do I see any explanation about why it might not be necessary or how to do it if I wanted to. Maybe it'll be explained later in the book.

Overall, so far I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for a good overview of a lot of aspects regarding ASP.NET 2.0. It won't answer everything in depth, but it does provide a good kickstart. It's certainly more fun (for me anyway) to read a book than to read online documentation from MS.

Excellent introduction to ASP.NET 2.0 for professional developers
By Forever Coder
This book has an outstanding balance. It introduces the new aspects of ASP.NET2 to developers while also going deep into items that have been with ASP.NET since the beginning - providing some good best practices. The authors do a good job of explaining complex topics and don't jibber-jabber too much - but instead get right to the point. That makes for a pleasant read. As stated in other reviews, this is a big book and covers A LOT of ground. ASP.NET2 is just plain huge now compared to ASP.NET1 and you need a book like this at your desk to reference. Since I have to work on projects sometimes in VB and other times C#, I was glad to see that the code example were in both languages. One important point of this book to realize is that this is a 'HOW-TO' book more than anything. There aren't long tables of objects and definitions like you see in other books. This book instead introduces topics and then usually shows you how to do it for yourself. That's my type of book!

A Very Good Book for Beginners - You Will Be Coding in No Time!
By Anne
I have tried to pick up VBA for Excel a few times, but the pieces just didn't seem to fall together for me. I am in IT, but I don't have a development background. I have solid Excel skills, but still got frustrated with VBA and would put it down. Recently, I had a very specific problem to solve for work and thought I would give it another try.

I decided to get a book with the basics and read it completely first, then try to start coding my project. I was in a hurry so I also got the online upgrade to start reading even before my book got here. I found the book an easy read and occasionally tried a few of the examples as I went along. I got through the book easily in a few days and feel as if I had a good knowledge base to begin.

I am happy to say within 2 weeks, I have completed the project I had first planned and then an even more complex project. I have a third planned now. I used other Excel VBA resources along the way, but have to give credit to this book for getting me started and with the basics so I could even understand where to go next. I see the time and money I invested in this book coming back to me many times over due to the hours and hours of work the macros I have been able to write will save both myself and my team members.

I still have a lot to learn, but I am very satisified with this book. I picked this book because of the other good reviews it has on this Amazon site, so I hope you will find my review helpful to you!!

Quick, Accurate, Not Just For Dummies - A Trusted Author
By David Gurgel
I needed to quickly do a macro for a large Excel workbook. Although I have programmed off and on for thirty years, I have done little with VBA.

One night with this book was all that it took to learn the basics; and I completed the project the following day with only brief use of one other VBA reference book. As noted by another, Wallenbach is the best-known author of books on VBA for Excel and writes with a pleasant style - friendly enough but little of the silliness of some introductory books.

The book is written for those with good familiarity with Excel but with little or no prior programming experience. It seems also to be a good quick-start or overview for those with more experience.

Code samples are quite short and can be downloaded from the web. There is no CD. You must have Excel 2000 or later. (The book itself was published in 2004. VBA for Excel has changed little since the Excel 2000 version.) You may want Wallenbach's 1018-page "Excel 2003 Power Programming with VBA" or other general reference for heavy-duty VBA work, although of course the on-line Microsoft documentation for VBA is very, very extensive.

VBA is of course very similar to its big-brother, the general-purpose language, VB.NET. If you are new to programming and enjoy this book, you can move on to VB.NET easily. Hey, you're not writing macros with VBA, you're programming!!

Excellent book for dummies
By Madhuker A. Mehta
I enjoyed reading the book and learned several tricks. Right after that, I was able to take a big macro developed by some one else and enhanced the macro to meet current needs of the project.
