After graduating, Jon worked for Wrox Press, first in their Birmingham (U.K.) offices for three years and then in Sydney (Australia) for another year. He is now a freelance developer and consultant based in a leafy suburb of London, working for a range of clients spread across three continents.
When not stuck in front of a computer screen, Jon enjoys writing and listening to music.

Eases the Transition

OK, so you really know that you need to move on to Style Sheets and the new version of HTML. But you've put it off. The books on XHTML and CSS are long and tedious, and written for beginners so they contain a lot of fluff that you already know.

This book is different. It starts with the presumption that you are already an HTML programmer. In fact you are probably running a site that has a few hundred pages on line and you don't want to go redo the whole thing. This book starts with a fictional web site that uses good HTML 4.0 as was proper in the late 1990's. It's a typical site with lots of tables within tables as was the style of the day.

The first thing that he does is go re-write the HTML into XHTML, removing the commands that handle the style of the presentation. Going to XHMTL is a pretty straightford thing, but without the style aspects you have a pretty dull page.

Second he says let's use CSS to make the page pretty once again. Since you've seen the pages. And you've looked at the HTML that generated them, the task is a conversion, not a design the page problem. This probably matches your real problem a lot better than the way most books cover the subject.

Third is the first word in the title: Accessible. There are now laws coming into effect that say a web site should be accessible to people with various disabilities. What does this mean, and how must you think about page design to make the site accessible?

Finally there is a chapter on what's coming. The web is dynamic and the rules are still changing. This chapter covers the things that are being considered, designed, or discussed about in the committees that make the rules. This is what you will be having to learn next.

Goes beyond and explains it all

This book not only explains how to do write in XHTML and CSS but it tells you why the W3C has changed its standards and why you should write in these two recommendations. It gives you thoroughly explained examples, and explains it in different ways to make you sure that you get it in case you didn't the first time.

This is an easy book to read but it takes some time as it educates you about related topics that you might want to know about.

Not only do you get to learn XHTML and CSS but you also get to update a website the publisher provides to put your new skills to practice and make sure you get it in your head. It also makes a good reference book as it explains CSS properties in detail and their values.

Now adays accesibility is a key tool for websites and that's what you'll learn at the end of the book.

I recommend this book to anyone who already knows HTML and has written websites in HTML (if you dont, dont buy this book to start with) that is willing to take their skills to the next level.

Accesibility or not

I think the author has done a good job in writing a book that highlights the issues of accessibility - an enormous topic. With eyesight being amongst comon 'issues' people have, the ability to magnify a page is important - guess what I need to be able to do?

Unfortunately, the finished site does not magnify without the page objects loosing there relative positioning to one another. This makes the page look like a scambled jig saw puzzle. I tested in Firefox 1 and the 1.5 beta version. IE 6 limits what you can do with magnification, so ive stopped using it. Opera magnifys beautifully.

I have tried raising the question as to whether this is an issue with the underlying code that the book promotes or is it a browser issue? No response (over a month at time of writing this) from publisher other than to confirm that the forum is 'live'.Really.

Im disappointed and can only rate as 3.

A great book for an uncommon topic

When I was told that I had to oversee the re-organization of our large spares storeroom, I immediately started looking for help on line because my experience in the matter was quite outdated. A logical approach

In training any dog, the biggest challenge always is how to 'connect the dots' in the dogs mind for what you want to see repeated and ignore what you don't want repeated. You then move on to giving the dog space to make his own choices based on what you taught him. This book fits perfectly into the philosophy.

I have owned two purebred dogs. Field Springers and Border Collies. Both breeds I had to trust to make their own decisions at one point as both had to ultimately operate off a lead. Establishing that connection is key with any dog to keep them safe, and to keep the enjoyment factor high. I give high marks to this book for making this point.

I disagree with a previous reviewer that this is only about German Shepherds. Certainly the pictures are, but anyone who has ever trained a dog should know that personality, drive, and disposition are all factors in training and that trumps breed every time. If the dog is interested he/she is limited only by his ability to smell.

The strongest part of this book is that it begins with simple puzzles for the dog, then offers more complex puzzles as they gain confidence. Like the writers, I agree that the dog has to want to do this. For my border collie it is now a passion. What I used to call 'hide and seek' with my dog has now jumped to a different level thanks to this book.

I'm grateful to the reviewers of this book who gave this such high marks. It made all the difference in choosing the right one. AND, I chose the right one.

"Industry Standard" but not the last word

The primary utility of this book is that it provides a good conceptual introduction to the world of K9SAR. It provides a panorama of what is involved in K9SAR (standards, training, equipment) and the various specialties. A thorough read of this book will give the beginner a handle on the issues and shop-talk you will encounter in the world of K9SAR.

Having said that...do not expect to learn how to train your dog for Search and Rescue from this book. Or any book. There is no way to learn to properly train a dog without the oversight of skilled mentors in the field. And hours and hours and hours of time with your dog.

Also, just like in parenting, for every training method or technique, there is someone with an opposite opinion. So much depends on the dog (its breed, temperament and preferences) and the handler. Do your homework, find mentors you trust, and let them guide you from selecting a pup onward.

Other books I've found useful in my own K9SAR training experience include: Following Ghosts: Developing the Tracking Relationship, Scent and the Scenting Dog (though the theory of rafts as presented here is dated), Ready! 2nd Edition The Training of the Search and Rescue Dog (Kennel Club Pro), and Natural Dog Training.

Horrible formatting for the kindle

I just bought the book and immediately began reading it. Unfortunately, the formatting is so horrible that it's distracting from the content. First of all, the font size is ridiculously large --- like reading something written in front size 16. The lines are not always even, and the text is full of inappropriate hyphenation, typos, etc. The pictures aren't always clear, and the figure legends are printed in font size 6 or so --- TINY.

You might expect formatting errors with some of the public domain books available for free download, but for the price of this book, the publisher certainly SHOULD have been able to hire a proofreader. Inexcusably sloppy work.

Lost in translation

The conversion to Kindle really stinks. The code portions are in really tiny type, the other portions are all out of whack. Somebody poured the print version into Kindle without even thinking. Very disappointed.

Good, up-to-date starting point

Frankly the pickings for Applescript books is pretty slim. To have a new book on the subject is a welcome surprise. I would have preferred that the book had more exposition in relation to the amount of code, but that's a small gripe with what is otherwise a well written book. The basics are covered from the syntax of the language and the tools, to file management and logging. Then the author discusses scripting the common iLife applications. This is where I appreciated the up-to-date information as the other book on Applescript from O'Reilly is badly in need of an update.

I would have preferred some additional information on Applescript Studio, as this is an exciting new development for Applescript. But that is also a minor grip.

A must buy for those interested in a starting point for scripting their OS X box.

It's About Time, and It's a Good Book

It's interesting to see just how powerful AppleScript has become. Initially scripting languages were not well suited for general purpose programming because they lacked too many features and/or were too inefficient. Both of these constraints have gone away. Computers are so powerful, the inefficiency doesn't matter. And the languages have gotten enough features that in many cases AppleScript works just fine as a solution to a general programming problem.

It's about time for this book. Up until now the information about AppleScript has been thin. Now this tutorial has been published to explain the use of the language. I like Mr. Kochan's writing style. He starts off having you write a program. If you type it the way he says, the program has a bug in it. (Kind of like my programs.) That way, about the first thing you see is how AppleScript reports an error. With that out of the way, you can move on to learning the language.

It's quite a comprehensive book, talking about things like classes of variables, there's quite a bit on string manipulation. Of course all the usual things like logic, loops, files and so on. He saves the description of AppleScript Studio until the end of the book, that way you learn more about the language itself and are ready when Studio comes in to help make the task so much easier.

A balanced fitness plan is easy with this book!

Cross-Training For Dummies is like having your own personal trainer! You pick a cross-training plan to follow (I picked the Weight Loss plan, but you can also choose from a "Base Fitness" plan, Athletic plan, or "Mix-n-Match" plan). Each plan tells you how much time you should spend on cardio and strength training, which exercises (cardio and strength training) you should try, and how much time you should spend on flexibility and power. Then, you just turn to the chapters they note to get a description of the exercise you should do! If you are already involved in a sport, you can also find exercises that will help you with that sport. Plus, there are a bunch of charts you can use to track your progress in your general health, body measurements, or weight training.

This book would be good for someone who is new to fitness and can be used as a reference to someone that already has a fitness lifestyle. It will answer alot of questions you may have but don't want to ask. I highly recommend this one!

Enligtening collection of war stories

Renowned hacker Kevin Mitnick has compiled a collection of stories of some devious and/or high-profile hacks. Without being overly technical, though there is a good deal of jargon, Mitnick relays the stories behind the headlines that some of you might remember. The prose was at times a little rough around the edges, but not too distracting from the overall message of the book. The now-benevolent Mitnick ends each chapter with his analysis of the hacks, how they could have been prevented (a.k.a. how to prevent history from repeating itself), and any additional insights he might have.

The book is overall a quick and easy read, and the stories are written with the feel of a crime novel- full of gripping, can't-wait-to-see-what-happens intrigue. The stories cover casinos, prisons, aircraft companies, newspaper companies, banks, medical companies, and so on- indeed, no-one is safe from hacking, no matter how thick and strong of an electronic barrier you may build. Penetration tests and social engineering are also discussed (though not as much as Mitnick's other book The Art of Deception), which I found to be the most enthralling part of the book. Some hacks may take months or years to pull off, but others can happen by a variety of means in as little as a few days. I can't help but be impressed at the capabilities of motivated people with a little bit of technical know-how, whether they are acting maliciously or not.

I found the book to be both entertaining and technically helpful, and I would recommend it to anyone who uses a computer. This book is not a how-to guide for hacking, so if that is what you are after, I suggest looking elsewhere. The stories presented what happened in the hacks, but not how to do it.

This book is, just as the title describes, about stories. Don't buy this book thinking it'll run you through the process of hacking or cracking anything, but it's a must have for beginner infosec/compsec students as it teaches you in a different way than most expect, and is fun to read. Not to mention, you know, he's M I T N I C K

Interesting Glimps into the Shadow of Computer Security

Few people in the world of computer attacking and defense are surrounded by so many stories and mystique as is Kevin Mitnick. His first book "The Art of Deception" gave eye opening warnings of security penetration through social engineering, one of Mitnick's specialties. Because he cannot write about his own hacking exploits, he has gathered stories of other attackers and their exploits. Of course, as the author admits, it's almost impossible to verify the truth of these stories, since they are all involving people who are either hidden, or involve incidents difficult to corroborate. Still, even if many of the stories are fiction or heavily fictionalized, there are lessons to be drawn in terms of security from each. Some of the stories are stronger than others (geeks exploiting technology to cheat casinos is the stuff of movies, stories of terrorists attempting to manipulate teenagers seem less strong and more of an attempt to give the stories contemporary urgency). After each story, Mitnick does some analysis and gives his thoughts on ways to counter these kinds of attacks. Some of these countermeasures should be obvious, but the fact that these stories take place, shows that they are far from obvious. Sometimes Mitnick hammers on the same countermeasures again and again which, while probably true, sometimes make the breadth of the stories seem less broad.

The information contained in the book still carries value, and is an accessible way to introduce people to the necessity of caution and security in all aspects of modern life. The caution is needed for everyone, from the consumer listening to almost daily loss of personal information to the manager charged with securing the company physically and technologically. At worst, you will walk away from this book hopefully thinking a bit more about security, if not starting to feel paranoid. And as technology works its way into every aspect of our lives, caution is needed now more than ever, which is where Mitnick delivers the goods in cautionary tales.

She has worked for Bon Appétit magazine and teaches through Santa Barbara City College's Adult Education program. One of our go to cook books!

Love love love Follow Your Heart, and the cook book features some of the best recipes from the restaurant along with some new ones. All of which will become staples for vegetarians and vegan alike. We initially bought this book because we were eating at FYH weekly meeting up with friends for weekend brunch and figured we'd like to make some of the dishes at home, like the scrambled tofu (a favorite in our house now), and the to die for broccoli soup!

Even if you haven't been to their restaurant though this book is a great buy! My only 'beef' is no photo's! But I guess they make up for that with more recipes! Great book, and really glad we bought it, we still use it often!

Excellent CookBook

My hubby used to work for "Follow Your Heart" and I gave this to him as a gift. He has always made the best tasting sandwiches, I attribute it to his having worked for Janice at "Follow Your Heart".

You won't be disappointed you will be inspired.

We also have the "Follow Your Heart Soup" cookbook which is also excellent.

Not like the restaurant!!!!! This is a scam

I would like to know what year Ms. Knight got these recipes because it's hard to find what's actually cooked, and on the menu at the restaurant in the cookbook!!! I lived in the San Fernando Valley for almost 30 years, and was hoping that this cookbook had many of the staple items at the restaurant. It came in the mail today and boy was I wrong!!! Where's the Zorro burrito? Where's the enchilada Corozon? Where's their wonderful spinach lasagne? By the way, the copy I received from Amazon had stains on it and the pages were bent. Looks like someone returned it and it was resold...

A Lifesaver

A while ago I found myself having to purchase my 7th computer in 14 years. An initial casual interest had turned into a daily necessity for personal business, business-business, communication and fun.
The 6th computer had crashed - fine one moment, gone the next (luckily a conversation with a friend had prompted me to buy a zip drive and do a full backup only two weeks before.)

Home Office Handbook is great! It tells you what to do with technology in the home office and not just how to decorate the office. And I needed help. I manage a group of apartment buildings at a univerity town and have an office in one of the buildings and another in my home. This book was a major help in figuring out wht I needed in each office and how to connect the offices. It also helped the technician that was working with me.

I love the "Dummies" series of books and this is one of my favorites. I am a single guy, live in an apartment that does not allow us to have grills on the patio so indoor grilling is my only choice. This book has made my indoor grilling experience fun and tasty.
